Ch. 16: The Downward Spiral
Bonnie had gone to Whitmore to tell Elena that she was back.
Caroline had turned off her humanity last night.
Damon, Kai and I were in the Salvatore Mausoleum at the cemetery, digging up our mother's coffin.
Well, Damon and I were getting her coffin.
Kai was standing in the doorway behind us. "I can't believe Bonnie made it out. Actually, I can. She's plucky. Hey, do you guys need help? Oh. Before you answer that, I'd rather not. I just keep experiencing these pangs of guilt watching you. Feelings are hard."
"So's the end of this crowbar," I told him, showing it to him.
"I'm just saying," Kai told us, stepping closer. "Digging up mommy's grave? That's dark, even for me. And totally unnecessary. Bonnie saw her alive in a 1903 prison world. It's--It's on camera. You want to watch it again?"
Kai tried to hand the camera to us.
I took it, tossing it to the side.
"Our mother died of consumption in 1858," Damon told him. "We did not go through the trouble of moving this thing to the family crypt only to find out that she's not even in here."
"Oh, so you just--you just called me here because you needed a friend?" Kai asked. "No. You wanted to know if it was possible for her to exist in another prison world. To which I responded, 'Yes'. To which both of you responded with denial."
"Whatever or whoever's on that tape, it's not her," Damon told him.
"Then who is it?" Kai asked.
"I don't know," I told them. "A ghost? Maybe she has an evil Gemini twin."
Kai smiled, looking away. "Nice."
"If our mother was imprisoned in 1903, she'd be in her 70s," Damon told him.
"Not if she were like you," Kai told us.
I looked at him. "I know our mother. She's not a vampire. She is not in a prison world. She died of consumption in 1858."
I tossed the crow bar aside.
"Uh, if you're both so sure of that, why haven't you opened the coffin yet?" Kai asked.
Damon and I exchanged a look, nodding slightly, opening the coffin, letting the lid fall to the ground and clatter against the stone.
Nothing, no one, was in the coffin.
"Congratulations," Kai told us. "Everything you know about your mom is wrong."
Kai patted us on the shoulders, turning around, walking away.
Damon and I looked at the coffin, still slightly in denial, but slowly accepting the truth.

Back at home, I was talking to Stefan on the phone about how Caroline promised she wouldn't kill anyone as long as we did nothing to make her turn it back on, and if we didn't lock her up and dry her out. "So, Saint Caroline keeps her halo even with no humanity."
"Yeah, until she snaps and strangles somebody with it."
"Well, even if she does..." I heard a crash from behind me, in the direction Kai was standing in, looking toward him. Kai smiled, holding up an antique. "Could be good for her, you know, to blow off some steam, thin the herd. Getting awfully crowded around here."
"Kaylin, if she kills somebody, I--"
"Not your fault, Stefan. By the time you figured out how you felt about her, it was too late. She made her choice."
"Just do me a favor. Check around Mystic Falls, see if anybody's missing."
"Will do brother," I told him, hanging up. "A little later."
I turned to face Kai and Damon.
"Yeah," Kai said, pouring himself a drink. "Why tell your brother your mother's still alive? No, but I get it." He walked around the table. "Mom's in a prison world, and therefore an evil psychopath. Don't want to ruin your bro's perfect mommy memory."
Kai took a drink.
"We'll tell him," I told him. "As soon as we know the truth."
"The truth," Kai repeated, sitting down on one of the couches.
I walked down the steps toward them.
"Which is why you're still here," Damon told him. "Your sister sent me and Elena back to 1994. You can send me back to 1903."
"Technically, yes, I am able to do that," Kai agreed. "But I'll need the Ascendant for the 1903 prison world."
"Oh," Damon said. "As the newly elected president of the Gemini freaks, I assume you know where to get it. So get it."
"It's my pleasure," Kai told us, taking a drink, looking away awkwardly.
"You want something," I told him. "Shocker."
"All right," Kai told us, sitting forward. "Well, ever since you told me Bonnie was back, I, uh, I can't stop thinking about her, all right? What I did, how she is. It's annoying, really. Look. I need to see her. I need to apologize. And you're gonna make that happen."
******
Caroline was throwing a rave party at Whitmore.
Stefan, Elena and Bonnie were going to keep an eye on her.
Damon called Bonnie.
"Can't believe I'm about to say this, but I'm glad you called."
"Uh-oh. Caroline go off the rails? If so, I called it."
"Gloating in one of my best friend's times of need? It's weird that I miss you."
"Bonnie, I thought I was clear. Our relationship only exists within the confines of 1994."
"You think one phone call makes us friends?"
"You don't have to pretend, Bon. I'm like a fever you can't shake."
"Yeah. Yeah. A disease."
Bonnie sounded distracted, sad even, sniffling.
"You okay?"
"Well, if scorching some douchebag with my magic is okay, then, yeah, peachy. When you came back, did you just slide right back into your old life?"
"Oh, you mean the one where my brother was an auto mechanic, my sister was dating my best friend and my girl friend forgot she loved me? Yep."
I sat on the couch, smiling at him sarcastically.
"Um, why, um... why did you call me?"
"So... teensy favor. I don't know if you know this, but when Kai merged with Luke, he went through a metamorphosis. He went from a sociopathic caterpillar to a slightly less evil butterfly."
Bonnie's voice was angry. "Yeah, and anyone who believes that is an idiot. Please don't ever repeat that name to me again, okay?"
Damon looked at me for help.
I made a slicing motion over my throat, silently telling him not to push it.
"Yeah," Damon said. "Okay." He chuckled. "Already forgot about it."
Bonnie calmed down. "What was the favor?"
"Don't worry about it. I'll figure it out on my own. Happy raving."
Damon hung up.
Kai walked into the room. "Hey. Who was that?"
"Bonnie," I answered. "She doesn't want to do it." I stood. "Doesn't believe there's a new you."
"But there is a new me," Kai told us. I shrugged. Kai sighed. "You--you explained it to her so she would understand, right?" He walked closer. "Small words, easy to digest?"
"Not gonna happen," I told him. "End of story."
"Huh," Kai said. "Shame." He walked past us. "Because Mama Salvatore's story is pretty fantastic."
Damon and I turned to face him.
"What are you talking about?" Damon asked.
"I have a strong lead on the Ascendant," Kai told us. "I checked the Gemini archives." He turned to face us. "Lily was captured on a dock in New York City in 1903. What is she was on her way here for the two of you? I mean, it makes sense. She--she'd just landed from Europe, where..."
"Where what?" I asked. Kai didn't answer. "Spit it out."
Kai acted as if he had a sore throat, holding it. "Sorry."
"You're not gonna tell us, are you?" I asked.
Kai faked a cough, making his voice hoarse. "No. Sorry. My throat just got really sore. I'm gonna go find a Lozenge." He cleared his throat, walking closer. "Maybe Bonnie will change her mind by the time I find one."
I gave him a look.
Kai smirked, walking past us, leaving.

We went to the rave.
Damon and Kai were going to talk to Bonnie.
I was standing outside, waiting.
Enzo drove up in his car, getting out.
"Oh, look who's here," I told him.
"Look who's talking," Enzo replied. "Have you heard about Caroline Forbes?"
"Uh-huh," I answered.
"Well, did you know that she went from emotionless juvenile to petty thief within a couple of hours' time? I saw her earlier, and she snagged my phone."
"Why would she want your phone?" I asked.
"If only I could remember how an emotionless vampire thought," Enzo told me. "I could easily find out."
I pointed at him, smirking, because I knew he wasn't being serious. "You do, and I kill you." Enzo smirked. I lowered my hand to my side. "So is that why my phone's had the day off? Because you couldn't phone stalk me 'cause Caroline stole it?"
"I thought you were too busy to answer phone calls," Enzo told me.
"I was too busy today," I told him honestly. "I was going through some family drama that you'd really rather not want to know. But today got me thinking more about my family, and about Stefan, Damon... you and your warning the other day." Enzo smirked. "And I think I figured out what you're up to."
"Is that so?" Enzo asked.
"Uh-huh," I answered. "You said that you were opening a door that none of thought about opening, and you also said that there might be a few 'unorthodox ways' about doing so. You said that it was a form of revenge, but to somebody else other than my brother who's tried to kill you lately. You also said that this had everything to do with me and my family."
"You're getting warmer," Enzo told me. "Come on. What is Enzo up to?"
"You found out about Sarah Salvatore," I told him.
"Indeed," Enzo answered. "But just a few weeks ago, you told me that you never heard of her existence."
"Well, just a few weeks ago, I had thought that she was dead," I told him. "Monique made Stefan fess up to what he's been doing with the real Sarah. And then he forced me into a promise that I couldn't tell you, and I couldn't tell Damon."
"Well, that's not very brotherly, now is it?" Enzo asked.
"I'm over it already," I told him. "What I'm not over is what the hell you're thinking about doing to that poor girl."
"I'm not going to do anything to her, love," Enzo told me. "I haven't hurt her in the slightest."
"If you wanted to introduce us, then why didn't you just introduce us?" I asked.
"Because how would she react to finding out that she had a family, and that they were vampires afterward?" Enzo asked. "She would take off in the opposite direction. Now, if she had already known about vampires beforehand, maybe she'd be interested to meet her vampire family."
"So that's where you've been off to this whole time?" I asked. "With my niece Sarah?"
"Now, don't be jealous, sweetheart," Enzo told me. "I'm afraid she doesn't find me nearly as fascinating as I do."
"But you have an accent," I told him. "Anything you say is automatically fascinating."
"I'm afraid we found the exception," Enzo told me. "Told her I was a vampire, and her eyes glazed over. Literally. Pure and utter disinterest." I thought for a moment, looking at Enzo in realization, laughing. "What's funny?"
"I know my brother, I know his tricks and everything about him, and Stefan's been looking out for Sarah ever since she was a baby," I told him. "Which means he will protect her at any cost."
Enzo shook his head in confusion. "Okay?"
"So what do you do when you want someone to have nothing to do with vampires?" I asked.
Enzo chuckled in realization. "Compel them not to care about anything to do with vampires. Kaylin Salvatore, you truly are a genius."
"Thank you," I told him. "So it seems that your plan to reunite the Salvatores has taken an unexpected turn. I mean, if she doesn't care about vampires, then why would she be intriqued by her family enough to make her want to meet us?"
"So it seems," Enzo agreed.
"Stefan, always one step ahead," I told him, chuckling, shaking my head, rolling my eyes. "I don't want her to get hurt, Enzo."
"I won't hurt her," Enzo told me.
"Then let me take it over from here," I told him.
Enzo raised his eyebrows. "Oh, really?"
"Why not?" I asked. "I've always wanted a sister. Although, I doubt that she'd care about us. She doesn't even know us. I've never even met us. I didn't even know she was alive until the day you killed Monique."
"Oh, you poor thing," Enzo told me.
I smirked. "Although, good job on finding her."
"Well, like I told you, darling," Enzo told me. "I'm incredibly gifted at unraveling the truth." He stepped closer, hands on my waist. "Now why don't I show you some of my other talents? Or do you not want me to?"
"Do I not want you to do what?" I asked.
"Don't try to confuse me," Enzo told me.
"Why not?" I asked. "It's very easy to do." Enzo smirked, feigning offense. I smiled a small smile. "And to answer your question, no. I don't want to kiss you."
"You don't?" Enzo asked.
I shook my head. "Nope." Enzo raised his eyebrows, unconvinced. "Satisfied?"
"Mm-mm," Enzo told me.
I smirked. "I don't, Enzo."
Enzo smiled. "Keep telling yourself that."
I couldn't help a smile, sighing, conflicted, slowly letting the smile fade. "Well, I better go. Sarah's not the only one in my family that I just found out was still alive recently."
I turned to walk away.
Enzo caught my wrist lightly, making me stop. "Kaylin..."
I slowly turned my head to him, seeing him standing so close.
I knew was probably the worst thing for me, but I didn't care. I wanted it even though it was toxic.
But, then again, it wasn't the most toxic thing that I had done to myself.
I bit my lip slightly, raising my gaze to his.
Enzo smiled a small smile.
I finally gave in, kissing him. For moments, it was like that, nothing but silence. Enzo turned my back toward the car behind me, gently backing me into it, a hand on the small of my back to press me closer.
After another long moment, I pulled away, breathing evenly, smiling a small smile, my voice soft. "Now, remember that for next time."
"Next time?" Enzo repeated in amusement, his voice just as soft.
"Next time," I answered, patting him on the chest twice, walking away.
Enzo turned to watch me go. "You're a tease."
I turned to face him, smiling, backing away. "You know you love it."
I turned around, walking away, leaving.

I went back home, sitting in the living room with Damon.
"So where did you go?" Damon asked.
"Hmm?" I asked.
"When we went to the rave, where did you take off to?" Damon asked. "'Cause you sure as hell wasn't with me, Bonnie and Kai, or at the dorm room where Bonnie was taking out her frustration on me, showing me what Kai did to her."
"I went my own way," I told him. Damon looked at me with slight suspicion. "And that's all you need to know, all right?"
"Okay," Damon said.
Kai walked into the house, closing the door behind him.
"I'm not in the mood for the preamble," I told him. "Just tell us why our mom's stuck in 1903."
"You're not bringing your mom back," Kai told us.
Damon looked at Kai. "That's odd. Sounds like you just asked me to kill you."
"You requested a truncated version, so I respectfully jumped to the end," Kai told us.
I stood. "And why aren't we bringing her back?"
"Because there are only two prison worlds in existence," Kai told us. "Mine, created in 1994, and the one created in 1903 for the sole purpose of locking up your mom and her closet full of crazy pants."
Damon narrowed his eyes at him, rushing toward him, pushing him against the wall. "You said we'd get her back!"
"I'm telling you, as a semi-sane person, you really don't want that," Kai told us.
"And I'm telling you as a vampire who eats people, you really don't want to piss me off," Damon told him.
"I'm trying to save your lives," Kai told us.
"Tell us how to get her back," I told him.
"Your mom's a Ripper, okay?" Kai asked. "She's a Ripper." Damon let him go. Kai walked past us. "She turned in 1858." Damon and I turned to face him. "Faked her death, went to Europe, where she went a little nuts."
"No," I told him.
"Bodies piled up, she moved, killed some more until she had to move again," Kai told us. "They think 3,000 in total."
I looked away in denial. "That's enough."
"And for some reason, my coven made it their duty to stop her," Kai went on. I tried to gesture for him to stop, but I could barely move. "So they cut her off at New York Harbor before she could tear through Manhattan. Granted, by the time they got to the ship, they found everybody dead. It was so gruesome that they had to burn it there at the harbor."
"I said that's enough!" I told him.
"I guess I should show myself out," Kai told us, walking past us, toward the door, walking out, leaving.
I stared off in denial, feeling weak for the first time in I didn't know how long, falling back onto the steps behind me.
Damon turned to face me, looking as numb as I felt.
I could not believe what Kai just told us was actually about our mom.
