Ch. 13: The Day I Tried to Live
Jo had left town after what happened to Luke last night.
Today was Bonnie's birthday, and even though she was still over there in the prison world, we were throwing her a birthday party over here.
I was in the kitchen, getting a cupcake. "Happy Birthday, Bon-Bon."
I heard Kai's voice call out. "Hello?"
"No," I called. "That's impossible, because why would you..." I closed my eyes hopefully. "You didn't. You're all merged, you're paced, and you're on your way to Portland!"
Kai walked inside. "Ooh. Forgot how massive this house was." He smiled. "Yum. Cupcakes. Sorry. Am I interrupting something?"
"What are you doing here?" I asked in annoyance.
"Funniest thing," Kai told me. "I need your help."
Kai took out a letter.
******
It was later, and Kai had explained to me exactly what he wanted, and Damon and Elena were here now.
"Why would we give a letter to Jo?" I asked.
"I haven't been able to find her using a locator spell, and you know, good on her, because under normal circumstances, I'd be superjazzed to gouge out her belly button," Kai told us, licking the frosting on the cupcake with his finger.
"Why would we help you, Kai?" Elena asked.
"Well, in case you haven't figured it out by now, I'm a sociopath," Kai told us. I pretended to be shocked. "I know. Shocker. I like being a sociopath. You know, I'm not burdened by things like guilt or love. So, then this merge happened with my brother Luke, and I won, which was great, because I absorbed his ability to do magic, but now I can't stop thinking about how Luke died, how Liv's life is ruined. For some horrible reason, I can't shake how badly I feel about it."
Kai sighed in frustration.
Elena looked at him in surprise. "You feel bad?"
"Yes," Kai answered. "So when I absorbed Luke's magic, I must have gotten some of his qualities or something like empathy. So, I Googled how to process emotional pain, and they said if you write everything down in a letter and burn it, you'll be healed. So I started writing, and this water literally started pooling in my eyes. Has that ever happened to you? Like--like water just--just oozing out of my eyeballs like I'm some alien creature excreting fluids."
I looked at him in amusement. "You mean you cried."
Kai pointed at me. "Yes. And all I could think about while writing the letter was Luke, and... and after that was done, I burned the letter, and the feelings--oops--were still there. So I really feel strongly that Jo needs to know how sorry I am for destroying our family, but let's face it, guys, all right? I mean, Kaylin, Elena, you two of all people should be willing to look past the questionable things that I've done to see that there's--there's good somewhere in me." He looked at me. "You did it with Klaus and Enzo." He looked at Elena. "You did it with Damon."
Damon was annoyed. "Okay. I think we're done here. Come on."
I smirked, getting an idea. "Actually, what if there's nothing he can do for us in exchange?"
******
Kai examined the Ascendant. "Sad attempt at iron welding."
"I tried to fix it," Elena told him.
"I can't bring Bonnie back with this," Kai told us.
"I thought you were the all-powerful leader of the Gemini Coven now," I told him in mock.
Kai showed me the broken Ascendant. "I destroyed this so that this couldn't be used again."
"Well, can we use that hunk of junk to send a message at least?" Damon asked. "It is her birthday."
Kai looked at Damon in surprise, slightly guilty. "It is?"
I smirked, getting an idea to make him feel enough guilt to get him to help us. "Yeah. It's really sad. I mean, old Bon-Bon, she's gonna be getting all dressed up for a party no one's even gonna show up to." Damon looked at me, knowing what I was doing, smirking. "I mean, wonder if she even knows that it is her birthday, or do all the days just blend into one vast sea of misery? I wonder."
Kai looked at the Ascendant. "One of the crown wheels survived. That's a positive. Plus, I am megapowerful."
"Yeah," I agreed.
"What do you want to say?" Kai asked.
"Well, I mean, if Bonnie needs magic to get out, we just need to tell her where to find some," Damon told us.
We looked at him in confusion.
******
Kai was working on fixing the Ascendant.
"Okay, so we know that Jo stored her magic in a hunting knife," Elena told us. "Bonnie sent hers over with Miss Cuddles. What receptacle of magic am I not thinking of?"
"Let me give you a hint," Damon told us. "Scorned lovers."
"Katherine?" I asked.
"Older," Damon told us.
"Silas?" I asked.
"Hotter," Damon told us.
"I don't know," Elena told us. "Silas was definitely hot."
I groaned in disgust, looking at Damon in realization. "Qetsiyah." Damon winked. "Her blood is on Silas' headstone. It's filled with magic.'
"Yep," Damon answered. "So in Bonnieland, that means that an island off Nova Scotia is a big magical battery waiting to be tapped. We just need to remind Bonnie of that."
"And what reminded you?" Elena asked curiously.
"I was gonna plan a trip there, change of scenery, you know," Damon answered. "There's only so much you can take of Mystic Falls on repeated."
"Oh, thank God," Kai told them in relief. "You two together is still totally revolting to me. Finally, a familiar feeling. Luke didn't take me over completely."
Jeremy walked in. "What the hell's he doing here?"
Kai looked up at Jeremy, smiling. "Hi."
******
"People don't just change like that," Jeremy told us.
"People usually don't merge with their siblings, either," I replied.
"Uh, for the record, I would have been fine with any of Luke's qualities," Kai told us. "You know, the hair, the whole gay thing... You know, maybe not the height, actually."
"You seriously buy this?" Jeremy asked.
"Look, I'm not saying that we have to like him, but if there's a way for us to tell Bonnie how she can get out..." Elena trailed off.
"We should trust a guy that changed personalities overnight?" Jeremy asked.
"Think of it like Elena in reverse," Kai told him, pouring himself some alcohol. "You know, she was human, pure, dating the good Salvatore. Then she became an undead blood vacuum, stopped caring about right and wrong, and started dating the bad one."
"It's not how it happened," Elena told him in annoyance.
Kai took a drink. "Hmm. I'm sure I missed a detail or two, but I'm just paraphrasing what Damon told me in the prison world."
"Speaking of, there's a witch over there we'd like to save," I told them. "So why don't you get your Gemini jumper cables and help us fix that thing?"
"Okay," Kai told us.
Kai went back to work.
Damon stepped closer. "Come on, Kai. You done yet?"
******
"So, I can't send us back physically, but I can probably send a part of us back," Kai told us.
"Probably?" Elena repeated.
"You remember that movie, 'Ghost'?" Kai asked. "Okay. Well, Bonnie's gonna be Demi Moore, because she's the alive one, obviously, and, uh, we'll all be a collective Patrick Swayze, the ghost. By the way, how much does that suck about Patrick Swayze?"
"Will she be able to see us or not, guys?" I asked.
"I don't know," Kai told us. "I've never done this before. So, let's all just take a deep breath, right? Close our eyes." Jeremy, Damon, Kai, Elena and I closed our eyes. "And... Phesmatos tribum invocio caveum, miscero mundio. Phesmatos tribum invocio caveum, miscero mundio."
******
We opened our eyes to see that the scene had changed.
"Where's the pool table?" I asked.
We were in the prison world.
"Oh, my God," Elena said in realization.
We saw Bonnie sitting at the table.
"Bonnie?" Jeremy asked, jogging closer. "Bonnie! She can't hear me."
Damon tried to touch something, but his hand past right through. "And we can't touch anything, either. Nice spell, Kai."
Bonnie was watching a videotape of Damon.
"This place is my own person hell."
Bonnie smiled a small smile. "Drama queen."
Damon walked toward her. "Hey."
I smiled.
Bonnie was watching the video of Bonnie and Damon.
"Reporting to you live from retro world, I'm Bonnie Bennett. Joining us today in the studio is special guest Damon Salvatore."
Bonnie stopped the tape, pouring herself a glass of bourbon.
"No," Damon said in surprise.
I looked at him in confusion. "What?"
"The bottle of bourbon is the oldest one in the house," Damon explained. "We made a pact if we couldn't take being trapped here alone for one more day... we'd... We'd kill that entire bottle. Then we'd kill ourselves."
Jeremy, Elena and I looked at each other in shock.
******
We woke up in the real world, lying on the floor, standing.
"Wait," Elena told us. "What happened? Why are we back here?"
"I don't know," Kai told us. "Spell must require too much magic. I lost the connection."
"Then reconnect," Damon told him.
"It's not that easy with four people," Kai told them, pointing to his bleeding nose. "You see this blood? I'm guessing that's not a good sign."
"Bonnie is going to kill herself," I told him in frustration.
"Can she do that?" Jeremy asked. "Can she die in the prison world?"
"I couldn't," Kai told us. "Of course, it was my own personal solitary confinement. Didn't want me to end my sentence early by killing myself. Ooh. I tried every method in the book. Heh. I drove down to D.C. Because there was this museum that has an actual guillotine."
"We get it," Jeremy told him in annoyance. "For whoever's not lucky enough to be you, dead means dead."
"We have to stop her," Elena told us. "We have to give her hope, send her a message somehow."
"How?" I asked. "She couldn't hear us."
"The message is already there in the atlas," Damon told us. "I scribbled some notes on Nova Scotia. We just have to get her to see it."
"All right, but how do we open an atlas if we can't touch anything?" Elena asked.
"So all we need is to get you three to crank up your witchy-woo, don't we?" I asked. "So we can make physical contact."
Kai sat down on the couch. "All while sending the four of you? Sure. Yeah. Hey, why don't I reanimate your dead parents for a tea party while I'm at it?" He changed his attitude. "Sorry. Insensitive."
"What if you just send me back?" Jeremy asked.
"What?" Elena asked. "No."
"That might work," Kai told him. "Focus all of our magic on one person. It might be enough of a boost that you could physically interact if I can hold the spell."
"And if you cannot?" I asked.
"The magic overwhelms me, and we can't pull Jeremy or ourselves out," Kai answered.
Elena looked at Jeremy worriedly. "Jer."
"Don't," Jeremy told her. "Don't say anything. If we can get through to her, we save Bonnie's life. If not... At least I'll be with her when she dies."
******
Kai was doing the spell again with Damon, Elena and me watching. "Phesmatos tribum..."
I looked at Damon. "I didn't know you and Bonnie had a death pact."
"It was my idea," Damon told us. "I thought of it after we watched 'The Bodyguard' for the billonth time."
"Phesmatos tribum..."
"I never thought she'd go through with it," Damon told us.
"Invocio caveum..."
"I can't watch this," Damon told us, walking out of the room.
"Phesmatos tribum invocio caveum, miscero mundio."
Elena walked out of the room.
Jeremy was lying unconscious on the couch for the spell.
I walked out of the room in the opposite direction.
******
I was in my room, having a drink, looking into the flames.
Until I heard Jeremy's voice from downstairs. "No! What are you doing?!"
I looked toward the door in confusion, rushing toward the door only to find out that I was trapped inside my own room by a boundary spell. "Seriously?"
I could hear Kai laughed. "Dang, sis. That was harsh."
"Shut up," Liv told him. Kai groaned, screamed in pain. "Phesmatos--"
Liv screamed.
Kai laughed. "Ah. It's all coming back to me, Livvie poo. You know, the charge..."
"Stop it, Kai," Liv told him.
"That races through your bones..." Kai trailed off.
"Stop it!" Liv told him.
"At the prospect of watching someone burn to death?" Kai asked. "I really missed that feeling."
"Just kill me, Kai," Liv told him. "You already killed my best friend. So just do it. Get it over with."
"Why can't I do this?" Kai asked. "I don't care about you. Why can't I kill you? Come on. Kai, do it. Do it." He yelled in anger. "Come on! Kill her!"
"Motus!" Liv said.
From the sound of it, Damon and Elena were trapped in the parlor.
"What the hell is happening?" Damon asked.
"Liv is trying to kill Kai," Elena answered.
"Jeremy!" Damon yelled. "Jeremy!"
From the sound of it, Jeremy and Kai were in the kitchen.
"Send be back," Jeremy told him. "Please."
"Jeremy, look at me," Kai told him. "I'm half-dead."
"I need to stop Bonnie," Jeremy told him.
"Okay," Kai told him. "Okay. Phesmatos tribum invocio caeum, miscero mundio."
******
From the sound of it, Liv was in the library.
The library was directly below my room.
"Kai!" Liv called. "Get out here!"
I could hear her push a table to the floor.
I stepped closer to the unlit fireplace. "You're right below me, aren't you?"
I spun around, kicking the wall with vampire strength, making rumble fall, making a hole in the hall that connected this fire place to the one down in the library. I took a drink of my bottle, dropping it down into the hole, where the flames of the fireplace below turning into a ball of fire, blowing toward Liv and making her scream as she fell unconscious.
I walked toward the door, raising my hand to test the boundary. My had passed through. I rushed out of the room.
******
Damon, Elena and I walked into the kitchen to see Kai and Jeremy sitting on the floor, both of them unconscious. Kai was wounded.
I hit Kai in the face, trying to wake him up. "Kai, hey! Damn it."
I knelt next to him, biting my wrist, feeding Kai my blood.
Kai started to wake up.
Elena knelt in front of Jeremy. "Oh, Jeremy. Jeremy. Hey, Jeremy. Wake up. Jeremy, wake up. Jer, wake up." Jeremy woke up. Elena sighed in relief. "Oh. Jeremy..."
"I'm okay," Jeremy told us.
Elena looked at him worriedly. "Bonnie, is she..."
"I saw her," Jeremy told us. "She--she's gonna be okay."
Elena smiled in relief, looking up at Damon.
Let's just hope that she could find the message and get to Nova Scotia, get the tombstone, be able to use that magic, and get her ass back home.
