Ch. 11: Woke Up With a Monster
Oh, my God, it felt so good to sleep in my own bed in my own room again!
At least, that was the feeling that I got until I woke up in the morning, listening to the sound of birds chirping from outside, the sound of bottles clanking from further in the house, along with a thud. I looked up in confusion, hearing another thud, standing, walking downstairs into the kitchen.
Jeremy was standing there, shirtless, a towel around his waist.
"Oh," I said sarcastically. "Because that's the first thing I wanna see in the morning."
"Sorry, I forgot you lived here," Jeremy told me, walking past.
"Yeah, clearly," I told him. "Actually, the view's not all that bad."
Jeremy looked at me weirdly. "Aren't you with Enzo?"
"It's complicated," I told him. "And it's called 'sarcasm', Jeremy. Look it up." Jeremy rolled his eyes, walking out of the kitchen. I checked the coffee pot. It was almost empty. "Thanks for the coffee."
I sighed.

I later found out that Alaric, Jo and Liv were here, trying to teach Jo how to use her magic again.
I walked into the living room to see that Damon was standing in there with them.
Jo was practicing levitating a book.
I set down a bottle of bourbon loudly to test her.
As predicted, Jo's concentration broke, and the book fell. "That doesn't count. I was distracted."
I looked at the dark-colored blouse that Liv was wearing, recognizing it. "Are you wearing my shirt?"
Liv smiled smugly at me.
Damon's phone rang. He answered. "Magic camp. How may I help you?"
Elena's voice was on the other line, frantic. "Damon, Kai has me at the high school. I need your help."
"Whoa. Elena?"
There was a crashing before Elena hung up.
******
Damon, Liv and I pulled up to the school in my newly-restored Vanquish.
"So, you have the best clothes, and the best car," Liv told me. "I love your taste." I smirked, putting the car in park. "But to think, a day almost went by where I wasn't roped into saving one of your friends."
I got out of the car. "Cry me a river."
I closed the door behind me.
Damon and Liv got out of the car.
"Just do this stupid cloaking spell so I can go grab Elena and you can get back to wrecking our mansion," Damon told her.
Liv sighed. "Fine."
Liv started setting up candles on my car and preparing the spell.
"What are you doing?" I asked. "The back door's right here."
"I'm not going in there," Liv told us.
"What?" I asked.
"If Kai even gets a glimpse of me, I'm dead," Liv told us. "I'm strong enough to do the spell from out here."
"Whatever," Damon told her. "Hope you cloak better than you teach." Liv rolled her eyes. "'Cause from the looks of our living room, Jo's not learning very much."
"Relax," Liv told us. "With a bit of practice, she'll be merge-ready in no time." She looked as if she didn't believe that, turning back to do the spell. "Phesmatos radium cara. Phesmatos--"
I turned to see that Liv had disappeared. "Liv? Liv? Hey! Liv!"
Luke appeared behind us. "Sorry."
"What the hell are you doing here?" I asked.
"She doesn't have time for this," Luke told us. "Invisique."
"No!" Damon told him.
Luke disappeared, leaving me and Damon alone.
******
We called Alaric. He had his phone on speaker with Jo.
"So, Liv's gone," I told them. "We need a Plan B."
"What do you mean, she's gone?"
"Her Wonder Twin took her, and we can't just go blazing in there," Damon told them. "Kai will kill Elena to spite me. We need a witch."
"I can do it," Jo told us.
"You can barely light a candle," Alaric told her.
"Cloaking is one of the first things they teach you as a Gemini," Jo told us. "I learned it when I was a kid."
"But?" Alaric asked.
"I'll have to stay beside Damon and Kaylin while I do it, which means I'll have to go inside," Jo answered.
"Okay, look," Alaric told us. "There's gotta be some other option."
"There is," Jeremy told us. "Right here."
"Let me guess," I told them. "Jeremy's holding a crossbow."
"No one is killing Kai," Jo told us.
"Well, we're not letting Kai kill Elena," Jeremy replied.
"Nobody's letting anyone die," Alaric told us.
"Anyone have any other ideas?" Damon asked.
Alaric sighed.
******
Jo came to the school, walking inside with Damon and me to do the cloaking spell.
Damon and I could hear Kai and Elena talking further in the building.
"If the spell that you're going for is to creep me out, it's working," Elena told him. "Ow. What are you doing?"
"Oh, nothing," Kai told her. "Just working on my self-control."
"I can hear Kai yammering," I told them.
"What's he saying?" Jo asked.
"He said it's a shame you don't have vamp hearing," Damon told her.
"I get why you don't like me, you know?" Jo asked. "You were bros. A girl comes into the picture. It's awkward."
"It's not awkward," Damon told her. "It's annoying."
"Because he's looking out for me?" Jo asked.
"Yes," Damon answered.
"At the expense of logic and reason," I told them.
"Oh, let me guess," Jo told me sarcastically. "You've never done that for someone you've loved before?"
"I haven't had that kind of love where I have to go swooping in to save the day," I told them.
"Right, because the guys you're used to can handle torture fairly easily, or they can't be killed," Damon told me.
"Shut up," I told him.
Kai walked around the corner. He took a drink of soda.
Jo, Damon and I remained as quiet as possible, waiting to see if he would see us.
Kai walked past us, recycling his can of soda. "Okay."
Kai turned, walking away, out of the hall.
We waited to speak until we knew that he couldn't hear us.
"What do you know?" Jo asked. "It's working."
We walked forward smugly.
******
We found Elena tied to a table in the cafeteria.
Damon untied her vervain ropes, placing a hand on her knee. "Hey."
"How are you hear right now?" Elena asked.
"Jo's invisibility spell," I answered, making her realize that I was there. "If you can see us, that means you joined the party."
"Come on," Jo told us weakly, looking faint. "We need to get out of here."
"My ring, it's gone," Elena told us. "Kai melted it into nothing."
"What?" Damon asked.
"I hate to cut this reunion short, but meter's running on this spell," I told them.
"Well, there's the tunnels under the school," Elena told us.
"Good call," Damon told her. "Boiler room. Stat. Come on."
Damon, Elena and I walked past Jo on the way to the door.
When I realized that Jo wasn't following, I turned back to her. "You good?"
"I'm good," Jo answered.
We walked out of the room.
******
We walked down the hallway toward the boiler room.
Jo started coughing, her nose starting to bleed.
"You okay?" Elena asked.
"Yeah," Jo told us. "Four people is just a lot more to cloak than three."
Jo nearly fell.
I caught her in my arms. "Whoa." I helped her stand. "Why is your nose bleeding?"
"I have a guess," Kai told us. "Magic's hard. Isn't it, Jo?"
We glared at him.
Kai smiled.
******
Jo was crying, wiping the blood away from her nose. "I'm so sorry."
"Don't sweat it," I told her. "I want him to see me while I kick his ass. Now, get out of here, okay?"
Jo walked out of the hall, into the next.
Damon looked at Kai, rolling his shoulder, eager to fight him.
Elena disappeared.
"Damon," I told him.
Damon noticed too, looking at Kai. "Where's Elena?"
"Oh, are we not cloaking people anymore?" Kai asked. "I thought that's what this was."
Damon rushed toward him.
Kai disappeared.
Damon and I looked around.
Kai appeared behind us, whistling to get our attention, waving at us.
I rushed to grab a broom stick from the side of the hall, breaking the wood over my knee, throwing it toward Kai, spearing him in the stomach.
Kai appeared next to the illusion of himself. "That's gotta hurt. I am definitely getting the hang of this. Cloaking spells, illusions. You know, it's all the same wheelhouse."
Kai gestured to the illusion, revealing that I had really tried to kill Elena.
Elena tried to pull the make-shift stake out of her stomach, gasping weakly in pain.
I looked at her in slight guilt. "Oops. Sorry."
Damon stepped closer. "No."
Kai raised his hands toward us, using the pain infliction spell on us, making us groan and scream in pain, holding our heads, lowering to the floor. He followed after Jo.
Jo was crawling weakly away.
Kai walked up behind her, grabbing her arm, pulling her to her feet, dragging her with him down the hall. "Now that I've got the kinks worked out, we can actually do this. Is there an upcoming celestial event that interests you? I'm partial to--"
An arrow shot through Kai's shoulder, making him groan in pain and fall to his knees.
Jeremy was standing behind Kai with his crossbow aimed at him.
Alaric appeared behind Kai, stabbing him in the neck with a syringe, injecting him with a fluid that made him fall unconscious.
Jeremy lowered his crossbow.
Alaric turned to Jo, helping her stand.
"I'm okay," Jo told him.
They wrapped their arms around each other.
******
Damon was pulling the stake out of Elena's stomach. "Okay, okay." Elena gasped in pain. Damon pulled out the last splinter. Elena breathed heavily in pain. "What? What's wrong? Didn't I get it? What?"
"There must be another splinter still stuck in my heart," Elena told him.
"What?" Damon asked worriedly, starting to feel around inside Elena's chest, looking for the splinter. "No. No, no, no, no. Hey, look at me. I'll get it."
Elena shook her head, gasping in pain. "If there's any--anything you need to say--"
"What?" Damon asked. "I'll find it, Elena."
"Now's the time," Elena told him.
"Come on," Damon told her. "No." Elena was breathing heavily. It slowly turned into laughter. Damon looked at her, realizing that she was messing with him, starting to smile, relaxing. "Seriously?"
Elena nodded, still laughing. "Yeah." She playfully hit Damon on the shoulder. "Oldest trick in the book."
Damon placed a hand on Elena's leg. Elena placed her hand on his. They looked at each other.
I walked into the hall.
Damon looked at me sarcastically. "Perfect timing."
"Sorry I tried to kill you, Elena," I told her, tilting my head. "Again." Elena chuckled. "You okay?"
Elena was still holding Damon's hand, smiling. "I've never felt more alive."
Damon smiled.
******
We went back home.
Kai was tied up and gagged, unconscious on the couch.
Jo looked at Alaric. "Sure you're okay having a Pentobarbital-ed house guest?"
Alaric smiled. "I am. If it buys us enough time to get you back into fighting shape."
Damon and Elena were sitting at a table.
Elena was trying to get the blood out of her shirt, looking at Damon shyly. "So, um, assuming that I don't get kidnapped before tomorrow, maybe we can, um, try for that dinner again?"
"Ooh, you know, I don't know," Damon told her. "I mean, every time we try and go on a date, we get kidnapped, I get sent to a prison world, or your feelings get compelled away. I just--I don't know if it's gonna--"
"Are you gonna keep sulking, or are you gonna let me take you to dinner?" Elena asked.
"Well, I guess we'll find out tomorrow," Damon told he.
I approached Elena. "I can help you clean that if you want. One part amonia, two parts meat tenderizer."
"You invented a stain remover?" Elena asked.
"You might not know this, being that I never tortured you directly, but I am not afraid of a little blood," I told her sarcastically.
"Wait, don't you hate me?" Elena asked.
"Well, I think staking you in the stomach settles as enough hate for one day," I told her.
Elena chuckled, standing, following me out of the room.
