Chapter 4

"I want to go home." Lucifer mumbled in the smallest voice ever. Clyde wasn't sure if he had imagined it but he knew he hadn't when he looked into his friend's glossy blue eyes.

"Me too." Clyde admitted, his feet aching from already walking so far. After another moment of complete silence, he spoke up again. "Do you think this relates to what that teacher was saying to us?"

"Are you implying that he did this? And I thought he was the insane one..."

"If you think about it, it kind of makes sense." Lucifer rolled his eyes, kicking a patch of dirt on the ground.

"I'm surrounded by crazy people."

"He said we could change a world if we worked together. At the moment, this world seems like it's in danger and we're here so-"

"You think we can save this world? Clyde, we're two teenage boys. I struggle to choose what to wear in the morning... I can hardly save a whole world."

"And neither can I.. but together? Our powers complement each other.. that has got to be a sign."

"Do you even know what you're saying? This isn't a fantasy world. We're going to wake up back at home soon and everything will be normal."

"From the dozens of fantasy and super hero books I have read, I have reason to believe we aren't going to get home until we save this world."

"That's ludicrous." Lucifer rushed forward so that Clyde could no longer bother him.

The situation was insane.

-

"Can you hear that?" Clyde said, squinting his eyes as he strained to hear the sound. Lucifer raised an eyebrow, not quite hearing it. "It sounds like.. music..." He started to run forward, grinning widely in anticipation.

"Clyde-" Lucifer started but Clyde excitedly cut him off.

"There must be people!" Clyde's feet must have been a blur as he raced forward, pushing past the trees that were in his way. The darkness of the forest became lighter and the hope of civilisation opened up. He was met with a wide clearing with lots of little cottages. There were fairy lights strung around the barks of the trees, flickering with light and positivity. There was a band, playing loud music from violins, guitars and a couple of wooden drums. People were sitting on long logs, singing happily whilst others were dancing in the centre of everything. Everyone looked so cheerful apart from the odd few who were separated from the group.

As soon as Clyde and Lucifer stepped out into sight, everything stopped. The band halted, the drummer playing one last beat before letting the drum fall against his chest. The people stopped singing and talking and were now just staring at the two boys in awe.

"Can you help us?" Lucifer said, his voice loud against the silence. A man who looked like he was roughly in his thirties stood up from his seat on the log. He stepped forward and ushered the two boys into a small cottage.

"What are you young-uns doing here? This ain't the place for boys." He was speaking in a weird accent which definitely wasn't English. He talked slowly, like he had to think about each word that came off of his tongue.

"We have no idea where we are. Could you help us by telling us where we are?" Lucifer seemed to take charge of the conversation which was good, considering Clyde was shaking out of anxiety.

"Boy, we're in Chansey. (I can never come up with place names so sorry it's rubbish) How can you not know that? What, you woke up with amnesia or somethin'?"

"No. We have reasons to believe we aren't from here. We just woke up in the middle of this place and have no idea why."

"Interestin'. What's with the funny costumes?"

"We have no idea."

The man leant forward, his eyes turning dark for a couple of seconds. "Would you boys like to make a deal?"

"Depends."

"I explain what you're here for and you listen?"

"Is that all?" Lucifer seemed surprised: he didn't expect it to be that easy.

"Okay, well it's a long one so hold on. A couple of months ago, a group of men in black suits invaded my town, all our towns.. they took away the children and went through our belongings like they own'd the place. They took everythin' from us. There's nothin' and no one left other than us people here. Their only reason for coming here was 'cause they wanted to dominate the whole world. According to some ol' prophecy, two boys who are meant to look exactly like you are meant to save us. Get back everythin'. I think you're here to save the world, young-uns."

Clyde so desperately wanted to say I told you so but, for some reason, it didn't seem quite appropriate at that moment. The only thing on Lucifer's mind was panic and pressure: him and someone he didn't entirely get along with had to save a whole world.. on their own. They were two teenage boys.. the world didn't have much hope.

"We can't save a whole world? We don't even know who we're up against or how strong they are or anything." Clyde mumbled, biting his lip in thought. He had no idea what was going on but he surely didn't like it.

"It's a group of 'activists'.. we don't exactly know their names yet. Kids, you're all we've got. You're our last chance of survival."

"Wait, so if we fail-"

"We all die... either that or we get taken away by the group and tortured."

"I need a minute." Clyde stood up, his chair making a loud scraping noise as he did so. He stepped outside the small house and leant onto the wall. He pressed his index fingers into his temples and closed his eyes, contemplating how they could possibly save the whole world without.. dying themselves. Clyde shuddered at the thought that a whole world and himself could die because of him.

Meanwhile, Lucifer was still sitting with the man, equally distressed. "Where do we even start?" He muttered.

"We don't know. We don't know nothing."

"Can we think about it before we do anything. Could we possibly have some food? Both Clyde and I are starving. We haven't eaten at all today."

The man nodded. "Would you like a cup of tea? We're having stew for dinner too, if you can wait half an hour."

"Yes, please. Thank you so much." Lucifer gratefully smiled and the man opposite him stood up. It was in that moment that he noticed the man's structure. He was rather bulky with lots of muscle. He wasn't skinny but not overweight either, a good in between. His footsteps were fairly heavy on the tiled floor because he was wearing thick boots, perfect for walking along stoney roads for miles.

The man came back with a teapot and three cups. One for him, one for Lucifer and one for Clyde. "Is your friend coming back in?" His voice was gruff and he spoke like he was tired. He probably was after reliving the memories of his past as he told the two boys about it.

Lucifer excused himself to go outside. "Clyde? He has made us some tea." Lucifer leaned on the door frame, both his arms neatly folded. "Are you okay?" He asked once he saw that Clyde's face was bright red and he looked like he was on the verge of crying.

"I'm fine." Clyde grumbled, diverting his gaze to his feet before pushing past Lucifer back into the cottage. "Thank you." He sat back down in his seat and glanced at the teapot.

"Do either of you take sugar?" Clyde nodded, holding up one finger. Lucifer did the same. They hadn't gotten the man's name yet and that was fairly important, considering he had basically just given them a quest.

"What's your name by the way?" Lucifer blurted out, taking a sip of his tea. He regretted it as soon as it scorched his tongue and made him gasp.

"Edwin."

"I'm Lucifer and this is Clyde."

"Lucifer and Clyde.. they sound like heroic names." Both of the boys nodded, unsure of how to react to such a... compliment? (Was it even a compliment? Probably.) "I have to go now so I can help make dinner. Feel free to make yourself comfortable."

"Thank you." As soon as Edwin had left the two boys alone, they turned and exchanged anxious glances.

"What even is going on?" Clyde mumbled, pressing his two index fingers into his forehead. He closed his eyes, deep in thought. "Let me get this straight, we need to fight these men in black suits and save the world, despite not knowing much about anything."

"Correct?" Lucifer replied but he didn't exactly sound so sure. "I guess we can stay here for a bit whilst we think this through."

"That sounds alright to me.." Clyde reached forward and hooked his finger through the handle of his tea cup. He took a sip before wincing. "It's freezing cold."

Lucifer smirked. "I have a solution for that!" He leaned over and wrapped both of his pale hands around the cup before focusing on it. Steam began to raise from the liquid and Clyde's face lit up.

"Thank you!" He grinned, taking a sip of the now hot tea. It tasted perfect.
