18. Where Does Your Loyalty Lie?

{Vongola headquarter, Italy}

Getting into a more comfortable position, Yucca leaned in his seat. His face casually resting on his hand as he waited for the Ninth and his Consigliere to start their interrogation.

The aura Yucca gave out, like all the precedent Varia members before him, didn't resemble one of someone who could get killed for treason. Yucca looked completely relaxed. His purple orbs contained no trace of guiltiness as a small smile played on his lips.

Contrary to Yucca whose whole demeanor had relaxed at the mention of his interrogation officially beginning, the guards stationed in the room, Iemitsu and the Ninth had straightened their posture. Reflecting the gravity of the situation and giving off a more severe and intimidating feeling. Although to someone coming from the Varia this was nothing.

Like his predecessor, Yucca's smile only widened in unhidden mockery and provocation at the display of strength his interrogators were presenting.

Clearing his throat, Timoteo asked the first question. "We won't talk about the rings' battle yet," he stated as his eyes gazed firmly into Yucca's one. "We will first go back to when you joined the Varia."

Yucca's composure didn't waver. Such questions were to be, expected. After all, contrary to the other Varia member, Yucca was first and foremost a hitman personally hired by the Consigliere to look over them. The fact that he had changed board wouldn't be left unattended.

"Did you plan to join the Varia even before the mission?"

The question was simple and concise. Hearing it, Yucca simply nodded in disagreement, his eyes traveling to Iemitsu's figure who seemed to write something down. Most probably my answers, Yucca guessed.

"Then why did you join them? When did you join them?" Iemitsu continued the interrogation.

"To say I joined them, I suppose I did so maybe half a year, a year after the beginning of the infiltration. Once I started to know the members better," he mused. "Although from my point of view I became a real part of the group once the Boss was out. Before I was under a trial period, you could say."

The sound of Iemitsu's pen scratching the paper at the mention of Xanxus was, heard but Yucca dismissed it entirely. Going back to, answering the previous questions.

"As to why I joined them..." Yucca paused, his thoughts going back to the time he started to sympathize with the Varia. "I realized their ideas weren't so bad and that I could somehow understand them. Identify some parts of me in them. So, since I didn't have anything to lose I thought: why not have a go with them?" Yucca exclaimed, his voice tinted with childishness as the usually composed male began to make grand gestures to illustrate his point of view. "So I gave it a shot. So far I don't particularly regret it. I only had rewarding experiences."

Timoteo hummed, nodding his head in understanding, he let his gaze shift to Iemitsu who was still taking some notes before resting his gaze on Yucca's relaxed figure. Hearing the sound of the pen scratching the paper stop, Timoteo asked his next question.

It went on this way for a while. Timoteo and Iemitsu (mostly him) asking Yucca question about his change of heart and thoughts about joining the Varia and breaching his contract with the Vongola before turning against them. Finally, after an hour of exchanging, the interrogation focused on the rings' battle's case.

The question was a simple one: describe the ring battle from your point of view.

"From my point of view..." Yucca repeated pensively. "I'll spare you what happened while the others were around since you probably heard it already," he mused, rubbing his chin as he began to rattle his memory in search of what he could tell the Ninth and his Consigliere.

"Like everybody, I attended the fights. I cheered the other's on and am partially responsible for Bel's ruthlessness against Gokudera Hayato since I told him to end it in one minute and not to show any mercy," he began, his gaze stern.

"I suppose infiltrating Namimori before the fight made me soft though," he admitted, giving his interrogators a half-lie. He couldn't possibly tell them about his stay in Kunigigaoka junior high as Koro-sensei.

At the mention of the male going to Namimori before the rings' battle, the two men perked up. Eyes narrowed as they urged the raven head to go on.

"Yeah, the Boss asked me to collect information on the kids as a test you could say." Timoteo and Iemitsu nodded pensively. "Anyway, as I said it made me a bit soft so I sent them get-well gifts after each fight. To make myself feel better I guess," he muttered at the end. "I also sent Squalo and Luss to the hospital after their fight. Because I follow the Boss doesn't mean I agree with his every deed, so I decided to bring those two to a hospital in Tokyo. You can look it up if you want. I called them under the name Chouku."

Timoteo hummed, his eyes softening a bit at the mention of the get-well gifts and sending his two comrades to the hospital. Next, to him, Iemitsu took some notes about the hospital, and name Yucca gave them.

"I also ate some sushi with Bel at TakeSushi," he said, observing the two males to see if they reacted at the name. "And went window shopping. Nyurufufu," his signature laugh escaped his lips at the thought. "I also bought an extremely unfashionable shirt if you're interested in my purchase."

Taking a gulp of the glass of water in front of him, Yucca continued. "Then came the cloud battle... but I suppose you know this one quite well already," he mused.

"Did you know Lord Ninth was inside the Gola Mosca," Iemitsu interrupted the raven head, his voice stern, and threatening.

"I did, my role in the plan wasn't minor. I was in charge of making Gola Mosca go out of control," Iemitsu and Timoteo tensed up. "After all, Gola Mosca was my proxy for the fight. He listened to my every order," he declared, a seemingly mocking smile on his face.

Iemistu gritted his teeth a scowl on his face he couldn't help but glare at the male in front of him. Timoteo wasn't fairing any better. Since Yucca was the last to join he had hoped the young man wasn't, so deeply involved in this mess. A troubled expression made its way to his face as his eyes filled with disappointment and regret.

Yucca ignored both gazes and continued to tell the two about his experience in Namimori. Omitting a few details about his past life's reflexion, he joyfully talked about the rings' battle. The same way someone would comment on the weather, he seemed entirely detached and unconcerned. It was as if it didn't concern him in the slightest.

Finally, Timoteo interrupted the male's speech which had at one point turn into a ranting session about his colleagues' bad habits.

"Thank you, Yucca."

Yucca stopped himself, his eyes staring at Timoteo intently before blinking, owlishly a few times. A wide grin made its way to his face, "But of course, Nono-sama," he said childishly.

Standing up, Yucca gave the two men a small bow, his business smile not leaving his face once he made his way to the door.

"Yucca," Timoteo called out as the male opened the door. "Are you truly loyal to Xanxus?"

Yucca paused, he didn't know if the Ninth had asked him this question because he hoped his son had found in Yucca a loyal underline (plus a friend if affinity) or if he wished for him to reconsider his option and maybe not follow Xanxus anymore.

Nevertheless, Yucca smiled. "Of course I am," he whispered, a flash of purple lighting his eyes for a second before dimming and disappearing into nothingness.

Entering the living room where as usual most of the member were assembled, Yucca met with their usual banter.

"Ah, Yucca-chan!" Lussuria beamed at the sight of the raven head, excitingly patting the seat next to him as he urged the male to sit down. "You took so long compared to us. I thought you would never come out!" he confessed.

"Ushishi, not like we would have minded them killing you" Bel added chuckling, making Yucca smile wryly.

"Is the Boss with the Ninth now?" Levi inquired, clearly dismissing how Yucca's interrogation went. Not like the purple-eyed minded it.

"Yeah, he went in as soon as I came out."

Leviathan merely grunted in acknowledgment before going back to his occupation. Ignoring Yucca once again, not like Yucca wasn't already used to it.

"Anyway, Yucca-chan," Lussuria interrupted, gaining the raven head's attention. "I haven't finished telling you about my stay in the hospital yet!" he sermoned, a cheery smile on his lips.

Yucca felt his eyes widen slightly and his smile falter for a second before his expression went back to its usual smiley one. Shit, I had forgotten about that, he mentally cursed himself.

Until Xanxus came back, Yucca was made a hostage of Lussuria's ranting. How he missed his time in the Ninth's office as Iemitsu and Timoteo interrogated him.

::

Tired, Yucca sighed before slumping onto his comfortable king-sized bed. Inhaling the fabric's fresh scent, he buried his face into the dark purple pillow. Everything had been so, tiring: the Varia, the inheritance battle, the Vongola.

{???, ???}

"Nene, Koro-chan, were you sincere?" a white head childishly asked as he stood in front of a raven-haired male.

Koro who laid on the couch opened his black eyes to glance at the younger male. "I was," he stated, his voice unwavering. "I still am." he closed his eyes in an attempt to nap.

Yucca who didn't seem to understand his older counterpart's message, tilted his head to the right, blinking owlishly. "Really..." A grin crept onto his face. "Then, Koro-chan, where does your loyalty lie?"

Koro halted his breathing for a second, his gaze shooting up to the standing male. There was, something unsettling in those purple orbs. As if they could see everything within you, nothing could escape them. It was somewhat terrifying.

It wasn't similar to the fear of dying or losing someone. No, it was a type of indescribable feeling Koro had never felt before. It made him uncomfortable. If Koro could, he would have escaped from this space, from Yucca's presence long ago.

"My loyalty..." he trailed off, not, completely grasping the meaning behind Yucca's question.

"Yeah! Your loyalty!"

"I wonder..." Koro gazed at the never-ending night sky. "As the God of Death, I only followed myself" he started. "then, as Koro-sensei, I probably lived for Aguri and my students. But now..." Koro didn't know, didn't know what he was living for, why he was leaving even. He didn't even know why he was telling Yucca all of this.

Sure, the two males had been "cohabiting" for a while now. They weren't strangers but, they weren't friends or family either, at best they could be qualified as acquaintances.

But then again, it didn't matter how much of a lone wolf Koro was. Yucca had this harmonious vibe, the feeling that whatever you told him, whoever you were he would accept it all. It was so easy to believe he would receive everything without, a question.

It was terrifying, unnerving. It was dangerous.

Koro mentally shook his head, dismissing his useless thoughts. "I suppose my loyalty lies within the Varia. Although I don't approve of everything they- we do. I still consider them my 'family' I guess." Passing a hand through his raven locks, he sighed. "Anyway what about you Yucca, where does your loyalty lie?" he asked his tone lighter as he tried to prevent the younger male from inquiring more.

Yucca smiled brightly, "With Ran-chan of course!" he answered, a childish grin adorning his face. Koro felt his gaze getting softer at the sight, a small smile, crept onto his face. In the end, Yucca was still a child who only had his little brother.

"For Ran-chan," Yucca continued, his voice somewhat passionate. "I would do anything!" he exclaimed. "Be it: stealing, killing, dying... I would do anything!"

"Ah..." Koro didn't know how to answer. The obsession Yucca had over his brother wasn't healthy, it was, sick.

At this moment, Koro knew why Yucca's presence was so unsettling. The boy no matter how harmonious he looked, how "normal" he acted, was insane.

"Ne, Koro-chan..." Yucca called out, interrupting Koro's thought. "If you had to decide between Ran-chan and the Varia, who would you choose?"

Koro looked at Yucca intently, trying to decipher any hidden meaning behind the younger boy's words. In the end, he didn't see anything, only pure childish curiosity.

"I don't know..."

Yucca hummed, giving Koro a closed-eyes smile. "I see..."

Days passed. The surveillance the Varia was under never relenting, always getting tighter every time they did any suspicious actions. Under this tense atmosphere, it happened.

Yucca felt his head throbbing. It was similar to when Koro saw those life-saving visions only the pain was way worse than usual. He couldn't ignore it the way he usually did. A rush of memories from a distant future came to him, all so clear and precise. It was as if he had lived them all.

He fainted.

Honestly, if you take the last part out, this chapter kinda looks like a big recap of what happened... Well, the end is important to the future arc, heads up.

Now, let's delve into the future arc!

I'll probably post another chapter later today or tomorrow since the story didn't develop as much as I wanted it to in this chapter.

Thanks for reading, until next time^^
