During the Chuunin Exams, Team Ren encounters one or two teams from opposing villages, as well as a monstrous spider that proves as vicious as the snakes Naruto fends off.

Akari discovers her Ice-Style when she's sent spiraling into the lake, which promptly freezes over the moment she dips below the surface.

Akari's mother and father were both members of the Yuki clan, and for a time they lived in the Land of Water, in the same village as Haku's mother. When it was discovered that Haku and his mother possessed the Ice Release kekkei genkai, Akari's family was found out as well, though they managed to escape the village - however, not without grievous injuries. They arrived in the Land of Fire mere days before Akari was due to be born, and her father used the last of his strength to visit the Leaf and beg for asylum for his pregnant wife. They reluctantly agreed, and a team was sent out to bring her mother in. She died during childbirth, too weak to stand the rigorous labor, and Akari's father died soon after he was able to see her for the first and last time. Taking pity on the faultless child, the Fourth Hokage arranged for her to be taken in by a man who understood the situation in the Land of Water and his family.
