Chapter Thirty Four

"Mom! Mom are you okay?! Oh no, no no no." You mumbled softly, eyes wide of fear as you rush across the room. Your slip on red sneakers padding against the tile ground, the grey cardigan that went to the backs of your knees blew out behind you almost like a cape would. Your hair still damp from the shower, and still smelling like green apples. The raw red corners of your eyes indicting your obvious worry for her, due to the constant rubbing and trying to avoid crying.

The hospital room wasn't large, but it was big enough. There were flowers on the side of her bed, onto the small white bedside table. Some white roses, catching your attention. You ended up looking right on past it, to your mother.

She had her eyes just barely open, her lashes making it seem as though her eyes were more closed than they really were. Her skin was a paler tone of what it usually was, and you could tell by the dark circles under her eyes and the red raw corners that something bad happened to her. She just looked so out of it, and the closer you got? The easier you could make out the shape of her veins in her arms. Along with an IV connected to the inside of her wrist, getting a directly blood transfusion.

"Mom!" You exclaim, throwing yourself into the comfy red seat next to the hospital bed. She just barely turns her head to look at you, scraggly and tossed around (H/c) hair that rests on her head moving as she does too.

"Oh, sweetheart. Are you okay?" Her voice came out raspy, giving you a worried smile as she moved her right hand up to stroke your hair. Placing her frail fingers into the locks close to the edge of your scalp, coming close to your hairline. You smiled into it, placed your hand over hers and leaned you head downwards while shutting your eyes.

"I was so worried about you, what happened to you?" You asked frantically, voice growing softer as you spoke, though. Your eyes went from staring to her tired eyes, to trailing down to her stomach. She looked completely fine, the teal and white hospital gown hung loose over her body. Several sets of wires and everything else connected to her body. A constant beeping reminding you that her heart is still going, that she isn't dead.

"Mom...your-"

"She's a girl." It was quick and quiet, and her eyes seemed to close while she reached out for both your hands.

"Oh my god. Did you lose the baby?" You asked frantically, eyes widened as she tightened her fingers around your hands. Your lips parted in shock, and you could tell by her shaking shoulders that she was about ready to just snap any second now.

"She's in an incubator," She paused, bringing both hands up to your face and cupping your cheeks. Smiling softly to you, with worried and sad eyes.

"Her name is Laura." She closed her eyes, keeping that small and short smile on her face. You let out a breathy laugh, it was mostly out of relief. You could tell there were a couple tears in her eyes that begged to escape free.

"Laura? That's a really pretty name, guess I didn't get my wish in asking for a little brother, huh?" You asked, laughing just a little more.

Commissioner Gordon told you what happened. Someone came into the bookstore and attacked your mother. It' a miracle that she's alive, even more so that the baby made it.

"What time was she born?" You asked, looking over to a calendar in the room with the big October 31'st circled in orange marker. It's two in the morning, Halloween morning.

"Midnight. She's my little pumpkin baby." You could tell she was trying so hard to say positive. With everything going on, you're pretty sure she hasn't even held her yet. Just that thought seeping into your mind made you frown, creasing your eyebrows into a fixture of worry and generally nothing but upset emotions.

You have a baby sister now.

You couldn't help that stupid grin that spilled onto your face, eyes growing large. And suddenly? You don't think you'd mind having some of your clothes stolen every now and then. But yeah, you're probably going to mind when she starts ruining your thing, when she gets older. But that's going to be later, definitely not right now.

She leaned forwards, attempting to sit up. She groaned out in pain, and you slid one of your hands on her back to support her.

She let out a loud yell, arching her back in pain while her eyes shot wide open.

"Mom?!" You yelled, placing more support on her shoulders.

Your eyes trailed down to her stomach, where a dark red shade of warm metallic smelling liquid started flooding onto the teal and whitish grey hospital gown she wore.

"N-Nurse?! I need a nurse!" You yelled, placing one hand on your mother's back and the other on her stomach, slowly making her lean downwards back onto the bed. Lathering your hand in her blood, until she was laying down enough for you to place both hands on her abdomen to stop the bleeding. She must have popped her stitches.

The nurse came in, and ushered you out of the room with as the Doctor came in after him. Telling you that everything would be al right, and that you'd be able to go and see your sister.

Behind glass, sure. But you were ushered to go and see her.

There were other parents there, some with hopeful faces and some with faces mixed in looks of pure exhauset. Some worrying, knowing their child might not even ever be able to be on the other side of the glass.

Only alive for hours, maybe.

But you saw her, a name tag on the incubator as you peered inside from the other side of the glass that you were on. The light pink onesie peeked out though she was wrapped up in a soft light grey blanket with pink kittens all over it. Turning on her side and cooing, a light pink bow on her head.

You smiled, but frowned once you noticed how many things she was hooked up to. An entire mask over her face to help her breathe, and at least three different IV tubes from the inside of her arms.

"Which one is yours?" A voice behind you said softly, causing you to turn around with red tinges of bright pink in your face.

"I-I'm not- My baby sister is in there." You gushed out, red in the face and waving your hands in front of your body. Closing your eyes and nervously smiling.

She had short red hair, and bright brown eyes. She shook her head and ligtly smiled, apologiezing while you pointed out which baby in the room was your sister.

"What's her name?" She asked, standing next to you while mentioning that the little boy two open spaces right away from your sister was in fact, her son.

"Laura. Which is fitting, because she was born right on midnight."

"A Halloween baby? That's pretty cool. Alexander was born a couple hours beforehand." She said softly, a long scarf wrapped around her shoulders. Keeping her warm.

"Nice." You mumbled, placig your hand on the glass and staring at the small infant girl who your mother named Laura.

She had a tuft of blonde hair, and bright blue eyes. It was weird, but for some reason You didn't really feel like she looked that much like your step-father. You know she's only been alive for a couple of hours, but really? YOu just have a sinking feeling, that's all.

Either way, you need to get going back home. Robin said he's making a stop by your house later. Gives you time to go to sleep.

Commissioner Gordon also told you one more little thing, you would have police protection 24/7 around the house. Officers parking their cars outside in undercover vehicles.

Yeah, protection.
