Chapter Thirty Eight
It's been a month since all of that went down. It's been a month since the attack on your mother. It's been a month since you were kidnapped by some lunatic named Scorn. It's been a month since police started patrolling near your home. It's been a month since you had your encounter with Robin. It's been a month since you formed that odd alliance with him. It's been a month since Lea showed up at your home.
Which is a problem, because she said something about having no intention of going back to Portland anytime soon. This is a problem because her legal guardians are going to call the police once Lea's alibi comes to turn. Her alibi? She's with Melissa's family while they're going on their rod trip. The thing is? Lea didn't tell Melissa he was using her as a get-out-of-jail-free card. So until Lea's foster parents start to realize something's up, Lea's trying to figure out how she can become an emancipated adult.
Your mother knows she's here, she's more than happy to give Lea a place to stay. She's annoyed that Lea came here, in fact she's pretty damn pissed. But all the drugs your mother is being given so she isn't aware of how much pain she's in? You wonder if she even knows what it means that Lea's here.
Lea's been sleeping wherever she passes out. In the garage, after maybe using the punching bags in there. Something she says helps distract her and pass the time, since you're going off to school everyday aside from the weekend. Another issue? Lea hasn't gone to school in a month. Mason knows about all o this, and now? All of Lea's friends have been told what's going on, instead of thinking she just up and died.
You've seen Lea asleep in the kitchen, with a blanket and a pillow in front of an open fridge. Yes, it's concerning. But are you going to question it? Not yet, only when it becomes a problem. You've seen her asleep on your mothers bed, seen her asleep on the couch, seen her asleep on your own bed. You've seen her dump a ton of blankets in the tub and call that a good resting place.
She has a laptop, and she actually helps your step dad pay for rent. He questions it, and refuses half the time. He likes Lea, says she's a smart girl. Well, she'd have to be to be able to get from Portland to Gotham all on her own without any real adult supervision. Your step dad is really fond of some of your friends, but he has a level of concern when it comes to Lea. Such as where the hell did she get nearly five hundred thousand dollars from, and why is she spending so much time in the garage? The two of you, plus your cousin Julian, have found it best not to question her too much.
She's been doing a lot of paperwork, printing a lot of things off of her laptop. Connecting it to the printer, obviously. You're just going off on a limb and assuming it's from her emancipation plan. But she always snatches the paperwork out of your hand whenever you go to get it for her. She glares at you whenever you ask to look at it.
She keeps finding weird bags around the house. They're tiny leather brown bags that smell really bad. Like rotten eggs. Lea opened one, and a bunch of bird bones and yellow powder came out. Some bags have really unique looking stones and crystals in them, some have bones and fine powder.
There was also that time where Lea had to move the rug because she lost an ear ring, and a large circle with a bunch of smaller stranger designs was inside it. There was a star right in the middle of it, each five points connecting to the circle. Somebody painted a pentagram on the floor under the rug. It freaked both o you out, so you decided not to tell your step dad about it and then continued to scrub it all away. Washing the paint out of the floor.
Damian helped with the finances to get the bookstore back in shop after it closed down for a while. You honestly didn't know how to repay him after that. He was so eager to help, but said he was only doing it because he enjoyed coming here. But he kept coming by every week to check up on you, came by every week to the cafe right before your shift would end. The two of you would just sit there and talk. And along with seeing him every day at school? It was...nice.
Alright, so after you were kidnapped? And after everything that happened with your mother and the bookstore happened? The principle cut you and Damian out of your deal, meaning the two of you don't have to be apart of the Grease play anymore. You were pretty thankful for that, but internally? You knew you were going to miss being that close to Damian.
Oh, you're definitely in every meaning of the word, crushing on him. It's the end of November, December's rolling around. Which means there's going to be a winter formal. Now are you secretly hoping Damian to ask you when the dance gets announced? Okay, maybe. But then again, nearly every other girl in the school is probably hoping for Damian to ask them. He's made himself kinda well known around school, though he doesn't like it. It's always so amusing whenever you tease him about that. His ears get red, and it's sort of attractive when he gets defensive about it?
But with Damian being around so much, coming to check up on you, getting closer to you? You kind of asked him to come over. Asked him if he wanted to, then kept blushing and rambling about how if he doesn't want to come over it's fine. He only replied to you by saying that he'd be more than happy to visit you outside of school, and outside of your job.
For the most part, you just planned on watching movies with him. Ones that everybody, but him, have seen. Starting off with Star Wars, attack of the clones. And going on up from there, until you get to the force awakens. Which you recently purchased on blue ray not even two days ago, just for this.
Lea has a job at the bookstore, it's apart of the emancipation process. But her shifts are always so oddly timed, she's never met Damian. But she's pretty eager to meet the boy that's always got you stumbling over your words whenever she bring him up. She loves to tease you about it, no matter what. It's like you and Lea are sisters sometimes, other times? Not so much.
Damian was coming over tonight, he said his older brother Dick was going to drop him off. And said something bout shutting the door as soon as he comes in, so he can avoid Dick coming in to talk to you. Of course, you Told Damian that it's totally fine for Dick to come in and talk for a little bit. And when you were on the phone with him while discussing this, he said it was a terrible idea for Dick to even know you'd be okay with him coming in. Something about him teasing Damian? He didn't say it like that, he didn't say anything about his brother teasing him. But in what you heard him say? You found that was what he was afraid of.
Apparently, you've already met and befriended one of his brothers. Tim Drake, the guy who comes down to the bookstore sometimes. He hasn't come by in a while, but when you found out he was Damian's brother? All he did was tell embarrassing stories about Damian. Starting with the cow, but of course you were unaware of the story being altered a little bit. Couldn't exactly explain the real reason as to how Damian found the cow. But explained that he named the Cow "Bat-Cow" because Damian's got this admiration for Batman. Tat's how Tim described it, anyway. Tim said he could go on and on about embarrassing Damian stories. But internally? He knows they've all been modified a bit. Most of hi stories relate to him being Robin, anyways.
You're thinking about how fun the evenings going to be, having Damian over and showing him just how much of an uncultered swine he is. Today, it's Star Wars. Next time? Who knows, maybe you'll just have a marathon of Pixar movies with him.
Next time? You're leaning forwards on the island in the kitchen, on your elbows and holding your face in your palms. Next time? What do you mean, next time? It's just you and Damian doing this. What if he gets the wrong idea? What if he thinks you're just being weird? Should Lea be apart of this too? She loves star wars a lot, you don't see why she'd be annoyed by it. Why are you worrying so much? It's just a Star Wars marathon with somebody who you've come to be able to call one of your closest friends.
"(Y/n), you good?" You heard Lea from behind you ask, poking a pretzel rod into your side to get your attention. Sighing and turning, you nodded. "Yeah, I'm alright." You mumbled in response, slowly making your way over to the counter to your left. A toaster, and a popcorn maker plugged into the outlet there.
You stand on your tip toes, reaching into the cabinet above you. Pulling out the bag of kernels, picking up a 1/2 cup and dipping it into the bag. "Are you planning on doing anything right now?" You asked, standing over the heater and feeling the warm air reach your bare knees. Wearing a skirt probably wasn't a good idea. Should you go change your clothes?
"I was actually going to go out. I left something at St. Adens Orphanage that one time I was there." She replied in a low mumble. Like the one unspoken rule of the house was not to talk about your father, but it's the entire reason she came. She was worried about you because she just barely remembers what your father was like. She's even more embarrassed that she didn't actually get anything out of going there, and seeing what she saw, and not having anything more on where your father went to in Gotham. The man's gotta be in a good hiding place if Lea can't snoop round enough and get a clear idea of where he's at.
"How do you plan on getting in?" You ask, raising an eyebrow with your back still facing her. Dumping the kernels into the top of the machine, and then pressing the lid of the popcorn maker on. Applying pressure, ad then hitting the on switch.
"I'm good at making friends, I'll figure it out." She says sarcastically, shrugging her shoulders and crossing her arms. This is when you turn around, to look at her.
Wearing a red zip up hoodie, a black tank top and some dark jeans with some matching converse sneakers. Her hair? It's no longer purple, and she's dyed her shoulder length hair back to it's natural dark tone of black. You only raise your left eyebrow in question, cross your arms, and shift your weight onto one foot.
"I'm letting my hair grow back out. It was long and blue, then it was short and purple. Now it's just short and black." She said, tugging at the ends of her shoulder length hair. Smiling and nodding, waiting for your opinion.
"Just don't get bleach or hair dye on anything I own, please and thank you." You said, closing your eyes and sighing.
"Yup, alrighty." She said, grinning and snapping with both of her hands, then pointing finger guns at you. You only roll your eyes and shake your head.
The doorbell rings, and Lea instantly smirks at you and wiggles her eyebrows.
"Lea, please." You scoff, glaring at her.
"Don't do anything I wouldn't do!"
"That's not saying much!" You retort, watching as she skips to go open the door, ready to leave through it the moment Damian comes in.
