16. Silence

Darcy was already waiting on the bed wearing her napkin dress when I came in.

I walked up to her, and quietly asked, "Darcy. You were the Vice Captor. Is it true that they have cameras in these rooms?"

"Yes. And you don't have to whisper, it's not like they can hear anything."

I breathed a sigh of relief. Knowing that somehow made me feel better.

"I can get us out of here." I confessed.

She stared at me with wide eyes, but quickly regained her composure for the sake of hiding her emotions from the cameras.

"How..?"

"Just follow my lead. We don't have much time."

She nodded fast.

I slid my hand under her chin and tilted her face up to mine. She caught on to the idea, and let me kiss her.

We kissed for about five long seconds, with me standing above her and her sitting down. She got up, her lips still on mine and threw her arms around my neck. She kissed me even harder, and we both made as if we were really into it.

I moved my hands to her shoulders and clutched the sleeves of her napkin dress. We paused to gasp for air, and went back in. Darcy and I spun across the room, acting like wild lovers. We reached the light switch.

She pressed my body against the wall, our hands above our heads. She dragged them down smoothly, flicking the light off on the way down.

We let go of each other.

"Now what," she breathed.

"Follow me," I grabbed her hand and led her to the bed.

I reached and grabbed the razor and key that I'd kicked under the bed. I gave Darcy the bronze key from Michael while I cut a hole into the mattress. I shoved my hand in. The key wasn't that hard to find since the mattress was so thin.

"Help me push the bed," I whispered.

"Ok."

We went on the same side and pushed it as hard as we could. The bed barely moved an inch. I went on the opposite side and pulled while Darcy pushed. Somehow, it worked better that way.

"Now what?"

"Touch the ground." I went over to her side and knelt down.

We moved our hands over the floor, searching for a different texture.

"There's a hole right here," said Darcy.

"It's probably the keyhole," I replied.

I took out the key from the mattress. Finally, finally, we would be able to leave. Excitement filled me. My heartbeat accelerated with an adrenaline rush. I was filled with hope and fear all at the same time.

I put in the key and turned it. Except it wouldn't turn.

"Tanner," Darcy snapped. "What's wrong?"

"It's not opening!" I whispered. I turned it again and again in desperation.

"Give it to me," she snatched it away and put it back in. It wouldn't open for her, either.

"What the hell?" Fear crept into her voice.

A wave of realization washed over me. "Wait, I have another key!"

"Then put it in!" She whispered loudly.

I quickly turned it, and it worked! We lifted the trap door.

"I'll go first." I prepared to step down.

"Why do you get to go first?" Darcy complained in annoyance.

"I need to make sure it's safe."

"Fine," she sighed.

I put one foot down, and then I remembered what Michael had said. There were no stairs, we'd have to jump down.

I pulled myself down, my arms still grabbing on to the edge of the floor. I swung my feet down, but failed to hit something solid. Which meant the ground was farther than I thought. I closed my eyes and let go.

"Tanner!" Darcy exclaimed.

"Shhh!" I hushed her as soon as I hit the ground. Surprisingly, I'd landed upright.

"Holy shit, I hear footsteps. Lots of them," Darcy squeaked.

"Fuck. Hurry up and jump."

"It's too dark, and you sound so far away!" She argued.

"Do you really want to stay up there?!" I fought back.

"No. Watch out, here I come!" She threw herself down, and I caught her just in time. Except she came down too fast, so I lost my balance and fell on my butt.

She got up by herself and lifted me back to my feet.

"Where to now? I think I heard them carrying guns!" She quaked.

"Yeah, we should definitely start running."

I grabbed her hand and ran straight down the dark tunnel. I couldn't see shit, but as long as I didn't run into a wall we'd be fine.

"THEY MOVED THE BED, LOOK," A gruff voice boomed from the opening above and behind us.

"Shit shit shit!" Darcy cried as we ran.

The tunnel was long, I didn't see an opening anywhere.

BAM. A gunshot echoed far behind us.

Darcy let out a high pitched scream, and suddenly I got pulled down. I was still holding Darcy's hand. I looked back into the darkness.

"Darcy?" Did she get shot?

"I'm ok, I just slipped," she answered.

My breath caught. I pulled her up, and we continued sprinting.

We ran faster and faster until we hit a metal wall that sent us falling on our backs.

I rubbed my head, a terrible pain spread around it. Hands lifted me up. It was Darcy. She used a different key from the one above. That's when I became aware that it wasn't a wall, it was a door. The exit.

Darcy and I pushed the heavy door open, leaning both our weight against it. The opened door invited the strong brightness of daylight outside.

"THERE! THEY'RE ESCAPING!" Another man hollered from the back of the tunnel.

"Duck!" I shoved Darcy hard onto the ground. Something whizzed above our heads.

We crawled on our hands and knees until we were away from the opening.

Once we were a safe distance from the metal door, we got back on our feet and ran into the bushes. I saw the lab coats laying there, but figured there was no point wearing them now.

I didn't dare look back, but I heard the Captors with their guns making it out of the tunnel.

Where was the car? I panned the parking lot, but only saw a few cars. And they were all empty.

I looked to the far left. A body was in the drivers seat. He turned to look at me, and I smiled.

However, Michael wasn't smiling. His face slowly contorted into that of sheer terror.

It felt like the world had turned into a slow motion video. I turned my head around to look back, just in time to see a Captor with his gun aimed right at me.

Something shifted in the air around the muzzle of his weapon, and it was almost like a mini vortex had appeared, sucking in air and releasing that which would deliver an instant slumber.

The vortex disappeared. An unseen force catapulted me to the ground. My head flung back as I fell. I caught a glimpse of Darcy's tear stained face, screaming words I couldn't hear.

My head hit the dirt. Hard. I heard something crack. In a span of a few seconds, a puddle of deep red seeped from under my head.

All I could see was the parking lot. I watched as Michael get out of his car, slamming the door shut. He ran to us, his lab coat flying gallantly behind him.

He was also yelling something I couldn't hear, but I think it was directed at the Captors.

My vision whirred, and I knew something was wrong when I saw two Michaels and two sets of floors. A ringing in my ears that I hadn't noticed before began to get louder and more high pitched.

I groaned in pain. My body went numb, and I lost any sense of mobility. I felt like a million ants were crawling over my body. My head spun.

The ringing in my ears, the petrified faces, numbness, dizziness, and sight of blood was all too much for me. I squeezed my eyes shut, trying to wish it all away.

It wasn't long before everything began to actually fade away. At last, the world became silent.
