Chapter 17
Nam Ilhoon was sure that he was the epitome of luck.
All his life he had been lucky, luckier than humanly possible. He wasn't smart as a kid. But that didn't stop him from wanting to be rich, famous, liked.
They say non intelligent people tend to be luckier and that was truth in his case. He wasn't smart, he always eeny meeny miney moe-d the answer to get passing marks, and it always worked! He got lucky even in the police entrance exams and got in. It didn't shock him, good things always happened to him. He got various chances of earning some extra cash during his duty as a police officer. He would be a fool to not use those chances. He used his luck to get wealth, he may have done some illegal things to accumulate the money, but whatever. He just used his luck. He may have ruined a few lives in the process, some people may be unfairly in jail, some people may have never gotten justice, some criminals may have been roaming around freely, but who is checking, right? He even got so lucky that he became commissioner general. He used his sweet voice and kind face and empty promises to win over the public all these years. He even married in a rich family and got blesses with two sons. He barely lost in gambling games. His friends used to take him to the casinos and each won thousands of dollars betting on the number he chose. He was really a lucky man. Ilhoon thought he would stay this lucky for his whole life.
Then why is his luck running out right now?
His life came crashing down in the last two months. Someone exposed all of the evidence of almost all of his crimes. Bribery, gambling, obstruction of justice, intentionally ruining evidence, drug intake, illegal dealings and so much more. Ilhoon doesn't know what and how and who would be behind this. He used to clean up so well after everything. How did that person get all those? Why is the person doing this? They don't seem to be after money, what are they after?
The police had ironically come and arrest him immediately and put him behind bars. The whole nation's eyes were on that case so the higher ups were pressured to do everything so fast. And everything did happen fast. He was arrested, investigated and his trial had started very very quickly. He was guilty no one could prove otherwise but still he got the biggest lawyer in the country, paying his millions of dollars. The lawyer fought hard needless to stay, but all he could do was get him a lesser sentence. No one could get him out. He lost almost all his money on the lawyers, trying to bribe anyone he could to get him out but God knows what will happen.
Today is the day of his last trial. The verdict and sentencing would be announced today. He was worried. He was transported in the prison bus. Outside of the courthouse was filled with people, giving him nasty looks, cursing at him, mocking him. He was so loved just a few days ago, now what is this? Reporters were having a field day covering this case. It was like a competition. Who gets a reaction out of him and who doesn't.
The courtroom was also filled with a lot of curious people and reporters. His wife and sons were nowhere to be found. Of course his wife is from a very rich and prim proper family. She also cared about her image as much as he did, maybe even more. This happening to her is worse than dying. There's no way she is gonna get involved in her husband's crimes and let her sons be involved either. He is sure she is already meeting a divorce lawyer. God knows how much alimony she would ask. He is gonna probably have to give away the remaining pennies he has to his wife. He doesn't blame her. He would honestly do the same, maybe even worse.
The judge hadn't arrived yet. Ilhoon was sitting at his defendant chair with his lawyers by his sides. He was nervous, he felt awfully thirsty. So he drank the whole bottle of water in one gulp. The water tasted a bit weird but is okay. It must be his hallucinations. He must be going crazy after losing everything.
Won't his luck save him this time? Wouldn't something miraculous happen this time to him?
Ilhoon sighed and looked around the busy courtroom. His eyes scanning particularly for nothing. His eyes stopped when they fell on someone. A guy. Around in his mid twenties. Very attractive. His glasses were sitting on his nose, bags covering his forehead. Ilhoon tried to remember if he ever seen this guy. He looks familiar for some reason. Is he a reporter? Then where is his notebook?
The guy in glasses looked at him and an ominous looking smile spread on his face. He looked straight at Ilhoon and motioned cutting his throat with his thumb and mumbled something close to you're over or you're done for. For some reason that scared the living daylight out of Ilhoon. He quickly looked away, sweating. He doesn't know why he might be sweating so profusely suddenly. His heart is beating loudly. Vision is getting blurry. He started to feel dizzy. With the whole room spinning.
The judge entered. Everyone stood up. Everyone looked at Ilhoon weirdly when he didn't get up. Because he couldn't. He physically felt weak. His lawyers helped him up. He could hear whispers about how everyone thought he was pretending to be sick to get a lesser sentence.
Throughout the court procedure he felt like his inside's were literally on fire. It was burning. Every organ was burning. It was torturous. He fainted twice in the courtroom. Medical care was given to him. Everyone looked at him with hatred rather than sympathy.
The judge had announced verdict finally. Nam Ilhoon was found guilty of all the charges. He was sentenced to fifteen years. Hearing that he fainted one again.
Ilhoon had woken up in a room not far away from the courtroom where medical care was given to him the previous two times. His insides were still burning, now he had problem breathing. He couldn't inhale or exhale properly. He tried to move his body, but he couldn't properly. His hand was tied up to the side of the bed with a handcuff. Hearing the handcuff's jiggle, a masked hooded girl peaked at him,"Ah, he's awake finally."
"Wa..water.."He breathed.
"You really want more water? When water is what turned you like this?"The girl asked.
"W..wh..at.."Ilhoon looked around the room slowly. Other than the girl there were two other guys in the room. The glasses guy he saw in the courtroom and another guy leaning against the entrance, possibly blocking it.
"Addjusshi, you seem to not understand what's happening over here. But you've been poisoned. The water you so thirstily drank in the courtroom, it was poisoned. Now your organs are slowly gonna give out and you're gonna die in forty eight hours."
What is this girl saying? Is this a cruel prank?
He desperately wanted to say something but he couldn't. He was in pain. Abnormal amount of it.
"That's why should've lead an honest life, Mr. Good policeman adjusshi,"The girl said while taking her mask off.
'Mr. Good policeman adjusshi' rings a bell. Only a little girl called him that long long ago when he was just starting as a police officer. He remembers..three children came to him asking to be saved and saving their families long time ago. The little girl called him 'Mr. Good policeman adjusshi' after she heard he's gonna help them get out of there. When he went to investigate, the girl's father offered him a copious amount of money to drop the investigation and keep his mouth shut. The amount of money was too big and he had a dream of owning a house. Only with a salary of a policeman it would take years. He believed his luck brought him the chance, so he took it. Leaving the children be on their own. He remembers the face of fear, disappointment, agony of the girl as he got out with the money leaving them in the hands of that monster. Ilhoon himself is surprised that he remembers so much about this as that wasn't definitely the last time he did it. He did that so many times. As stated earlier luck brought him chances. He remembers this because of the nickname she gave him. It could've been such a touching story if he actually saved them. But reality doesn't work like that.
"A..are you.."
"The girl you left to die as you decided to be a greedy, evil senile fuck? Why yes,"She said and than pointed at the glasses boy,"And he's the guy you left. So how does it feel? Knowing that you're gonna die in our hands? Well, we wouldn't have turned like this if you had decided to be a good human being."
Ilhoon really had no control over his feelings now. He should be feeling scared, terrified. These two are the reason he is in this state now. These two are behind him getting exposed. He now understands who and why they did that. They wanted revenge.
The girl had gotten a knife out of her pocket and slowly caressed her fingers over it. It was obvious what she was planning on doing next. Ilhoon doesn't want to die. He wants to live and use his luck once again to get back on the top.
Ilhoon should scream, cry, beg for mercy but Ilhoon's emotions were a mess now. His thoughts were a mess. His whole body was a mess. He can't help but wonder what happened to the younger kid that came to the police station with this girl and the glasses boy. He is sure the intimidating looking guy against the entrance isn't he.
Where is the little innocent boy now? Is he living well? Or did he turn as twisted as these two over here? Or did he die? He wants to ask these questions but he couldn't. His body won't allow him to. Is this what feels like being close to death?
The girl came and grazed the knife over his neck, cheeks causing little cuts everywhere. This girl knew how to torture someone. And the worst part was that he couldn't even scream. He could only groan in pain as his body got covered in scars. His insides, outsides both felt like hell. Where are the police? Nurses? Doctors? Anyone?
After what felt like an eternity she raised he knife, lunging it but stopped right in front of his heart. He was unknowingly waiting for her to do it. He had given up on living. He just wanted the pain he was feeling to be over. But she didn't.
She smirked,"You thought your death would be this easy, you fucker?" She stood up straight,"Think of the lives you've ruined as you wait for your death in the next forty eight hours. See you in hell, goodbye."
She gave him a salute with her two fingers. The glasses guy also did so while smirking.
The girl looked at the guy against the entrance and said,"Kook, let's go."
The three of them vanished into thin air. Poof! Ilhoon doesn't know how they did that and he honestly doesn't care. His organs were giving out, he was bleeding. It was hell.
A ton of people immediately burst in through the door that was blocked by that guy. Doctors, nurses, policemen, lawyers. They were all afraid that he would've run away. The sight of him bleeding in front of them horrified that even more. He was a bloody mess. He couldn't tell who did this him. No one could diagnose his inner illness.
Ilhoon died a very slow and painful death within thirty hours in a hospital. Everyone tried their best to save him so he lives and gets his lawful punishment. But to no avail. The case of who cut him so badly also would be dropped soon anyway. No one saw anything or anyone coming out or going into the room. No dna was found. And honestly no one cared that much anyway. As long as the reporters didn't get a wind of it, everything would be fine.
In his last moments, Ilhoon would lie in the bed in constant pain and see the faces of people he did wrong instead of his achievements and best moments. The last thing he saw was the little girl calling him 'Mr. Good policeman adjusshi.' Then his heartbeat monitor went silent.
Nam Ilhoon and his series of good luck had officially finally come to an end.
Something miraculous happened. Lily really agreed to be fine with Doyoung becoming Gaeul's legal guardian without throwing a fit. In one day. It took Jungkook a single day to convince Lily to agree to this. Doyoung thought Lily would be so against this idea, but what Jungkook did or say make her agree is a big question.
It is currently afternoon. The three of them had a meeting in their hideout about Gaeul's topic a few minutes ago. After they ended, they came out to take a walk. The sky is completely yellow, the sun is shining brightly. So brightly that they sometimes had to squint their eyes. The park was quiet with only a few people sitting on the benches.
"Ah, it feels nice,"Doyoung said while stretching his arms.
"Right? Y'all's office is so stuffy,"Jungkook commented earning a glare from Doyoung.
In the last two months, their lives were pretty normal. Well, as normal as Doyoung and Lily's life can be. They had been talking clients, waiting for Ilhoon's last trial and their revenge. Now they were done with it, pretty successfully. Doyoung doesn't know what he feels about it. He thought he would feel over the moon, he's been waiting so long for this after all. But he doesn't feel that good. He isn't sure what Lily feels though. He doesn't even ask. Does she feel satisfied? Does she really? Or is she just pretending just like him? Nowadays Doyoung has been asking questions like this.
One thing that has changed over the last two months is that..Lily and Jungkook had become weirdly closer. Basically inseparable. They are giving off a subtle yet different vibe than before. Do they realize that they are giving off a different vibe? Or is Doyoung misinterpreting something?
Also Doyoung has been on a secret mission for the last week. He had planned on starting this mission after Lily brought Gaeul to him. He had decided to do that right that night when he saw the old picture of the three of them together. But his wish of executing this plan got stronger after taking out Ilhoon due to all the weird feelings he is feeling.
This plan is dangerous. Lily had specifically stated that she's gonna kill him if he ever even thinks of doing it, years ago. And she wasn't joking. But that was years ago. Lily is slightly changing now. Isn't she? And also Jungkook is with her, he can calm her down if things go horribly horribly wrong. Right?
Right?
Well, Doyoung sure as hell hopes so. What he is planning on doing is dangerous. But this is the only way to turn their lives back normal. Turn his best friend normal. Turn Lilith back into Yerim.
He can't let this chance go.
Oh, how nice it would be if they could turn back Lily into what she was before all this happened?
Doyoung shook his head to stop thinking so much. He is thinking way ahead. What if his plan fails? What if Lily even refuses to look at him? What if Doyoung is reading too much into the Gaeul situation? What if Lily helped Gaeul just because?
What if Doyoung ever fails to find him? What if he doesn't even want to meet them? What if he just wants to continue living the normal life he's hopefully been living?
Is Doyoung being selfish by trying to pull him in this madness? Probably. But Doyoung just can't help it anymore. Their profession is dangerous. Gaeul is like a little brother to him. He doesn't want Gaeul to get hurt because of his profession and neither does he want his best friend to continue living as a blood thirsty monster.
Doyoung sighed as all this complex emotions piled up in his head.
"What's wrong with him?"Jungkook asked while nudging Lily with his elbow.
"Leave him be, he's thinking,"Lily said,"That's the face he makes when he is very confused about making a decision."
"I'm not thinking about anything, stop.."
"He buffs like this when he lies,"Lily told Jungkook as if she was educating him. Jungkook nodded as if it were the most interesting subject.
Doyoung shook his head in disapproval.
"Guys, should we have a dinner party? As Gaeul and Miko becoming a part of the family?"Jungkook out of the blue asked.
Lily frowned,"Count me the fuck out, I would rather die than eat with a kid.."
"Lily, come on. It would be fun. And Doyoung what do you think?"
"I like the idea. We can gather at my house and grill hanwoo and stuff,"Doyoung said.
"No-"
"Sounds great! We should set a date,"Jungkook smiled cheekily,"Lily is coming too."
As soon as the words escaped his mouth Lily kicked the back of his knee with her knee,"Why you fucker.."
"Ouch,"Jungkook said crouching down a bit and holding the back of his knee,"That totally hurt you mean little.."
"Then Stop fucking going around making decisions on my stead, especially when you live rent free in my apartment!"
Lily and Jungkook had gotten into a small banter like the usually go into while Jungkook was crouching down and Lily was standing beside him with her hands on her waist. Doyoung also stopped and smiled seeing this banter.
Jungkook was trying his best to hold back his laughter while Lily's face was still blank. But there was something different in her expression. This only happens when she is with Jungkook.
The scene ahead of him was adorable.
At one point Jungkook got up a bit and they started walking while still fighting. Doyoung was about to follow them but stopped when his phone rang. He got his phone out to see who was calling. It was an unknown number. Doyoung frowned. Was it a new client?
He picked up while still looking at Lily and Jungkook walking away. Lily just playfully got Jungkook again. Jungkook was once again showing a big reaction of pain dramatically to her.
"Hello? Whom am I speaking to?"
"Hello, Dongyoung hyung?"
Doyoung's whole body got goosebumps hearing his real name by an unknown but still such a familiar voice. He was so stunned by the fact that his was happening he couldn't speak.
The other side spoke again,"You really are Dongyoung hyung, aren't you? I got this number from the orphanage you called two days ago. Please tell me this really is you, Dongyoung hyung."
The desperation in his voice broke Doyoung's heart in million pieces. But he still wasn't able to speak.
That moment Lily turned around finally and looked at him, squinting her eyes as the sun shone right at her eyes. She put her hand on her temple to block the sunlight from her eyes. Jungkook also turned. They had stopped fighting.
The other side of the phone spoke again.
"Hyung! Hyung, where is my noona? Is she well? My noona...noona's alive, right? Please tell me she is. Please.."
Right then Lily shouted,"What're you doing, Kim Doyoung? Come here quickly!"
Doyoung couldn't move for a while as he looked at Lily and had his phone against his ear. He can't believe this is happening.
Doyoung's heart may burst any moment now.
Looks like their lives are going to change forever.
