Chapter 11
"Lily, really, I don't need this."
Jungkook said sincerely. But the person whom these words were directed to didn't seem to care. She completely ignored him and looked at the sales associate of the store they were currently in.
"So what colors did this model come in again?"Lily asked.
The sales associate smiled brightly at her, happy at the possible new sale,"Ma'am this model comes with a variety of colors. There's chic black, perfect white, wine red, stylish grey.."
Jungkook sighed as she kept listing the colors. He tried to nudge Lily's sleeve to make her stop and go home but she wouldn't budge. Jungkook shook his head and looked around the big store they were in. Filled with televisions, led screens flashing bright vibrant colors, sales associates smiling at the customers trying to interest them in their newest release, mild music playing in speakers. Most of the customers in the store were happily picking out their new wonder toy. Smartphone.
Lily is also here to get a smartphone. But this time not for herself, it's for Jungkook. She had decided that she would get him a phone right when she came home with a television and couldn't find him anywhere. She says she had no way of contacting him. Jungkook keeps on saying if she needs him, she should just call his name, that's how a bond with a devil works. She doesn't need to waste money on stuff like this when they can buy so many snacks with that. But was there once a time when Lily listened to him? No.
"Let's go with the blood red one,"Lily said as she smirked while holding the red smartphone on her hand and she looked at Jungkook,"You like this one, right?"
"Wine red, Ma'am,"The sales associate corrected her politely while smiling before Jungkook could say anything.
This time Lily smirked at her,"This shade looks more like blood than wine, sweetheart. Trust me, I'm a master at this."
Jungkook could tell the sales associate was creeped out by Lily's sudden behavior and smirk. Anyone would be. Jungkook smiled at the sales associate,"Please excuse us for a moment."
Jungkook then pulled Lily away by holding her sleeve. Once they were in a good enough distance from the associate and he was sure the associate couldn't hear them, he whispered,"Why are you suddenly trying to scare here? Stop."
Lily shrugged,"I just corrected her."
"Well, not everyone needs to know you are a master crimson color analyst, do they?"
Lily smirked being amused,"Anyway, you like the blood colored phone, right? I like it a lot."
"Lily, I really don't need a phone. I told you.."
Lily completely disregarded him,"The black one is good too, but it's too simple. You're special so you deserve a special one."
Jungkook sighed and grabbed her shoulders making her looking straight into his eyes,"Lily I don't need any gang device to appear in front of you when you need me. All you need to do is call my name."
Lily stayed quiet for a few seconds. Jungkook thought he got through to her. But the next thing she said caught him completely off guard.
"What about when you need me? I can't just appear when you call me, Jungkook."
The way she said it, made his heart skip a beat. He was at the loss of words,"Umm.."
She slowly pushed his hands off her shoulder,"So the blood one it is!"
With that she ran to the sales associate before Jungkook could do anything,"We will take the red one please!"
All Jungkook could do was look at Lily excitedly waiting for the phone being packed up while his heart was feeling all sorts of weird emotions. He doesn't know why he was feeling like this over a human's ambitious words. Why would he, a devil would ever need a human so badly that he would have to call her?
That moment would never come.
Would it?
"Just a few days ago someone was saying how he didn't need a phone, now look at him being stuck to that 24/7,"Lily said while eating chips and looking at Jungkook giggling cutely at the new funny video he found on YouTube.
It has been about a week since she's bought him the phone. At first he acted like it was the biggest nuisance and waste of time and money ever but when she started teaching him how to use the phone, he couldn't get enough of it. He was so amused by every aspect of it. He soon kept going on and on about how smartphone and internet are such wonders. He couldn't believe exactly how much could be done with small device that fits in the palm of one's hand. He also kept saying how proud he was of humans for inventing it.
In this one week he seems to have explored a lot of the internet. His main jam nowadays have been watching funny shorts on YouTube and sending them to Lily even though she has forbidden him a million times. Also he find so many weird things funny. At times Lily really has to question his sense of humor.
"Lily Lily look, I sent you a funny video..."
"Why? I told you to stop doing that!"Lily said while shaking her head. Even though she shook her head, she immediately picked up her phone and clicked on the video Jungkook sent. It was a Khabi Lame's reaction video. Lily didn't find it funny but Jungkook over there was dying of laughter. Lily didn't understand why this Khaby guy was so famous.
"What's so entertaining about a guy staring at a screen with pursed lips and an unamused face? I can do that better than him.."
"I really like this dude,"Jungkook said as he continued to laugh over the video like a happy and contented kid.
Lily just stared at him smiling for a few seconds, even she doesn't know why she did that. Then she got up and dusted her hands off while sliding her phone in her pocket,"I'm gonna go to Doyoung now, see you later. Don't just stare at your phone all the time. It'll affect your eyes..oh we don't need to worry about your eyes getting bad. Anyways..see you, bye."
Jungkook looked up at her and smiled,"Bye, don't be too late!"
"Hmm."
"So that's all about our new target, do you have any questions?..Umm..Lily? Are you listening?"Doyoung asked, looking at the girl sitting across him. She seemed to be concentrated on something else. She also was checking her phone quite a few times, which is unusual for her as doesn't have any friends and people she contacts often except for him. Why is she checking her phone so often? Whose call or message is she waiting for?
"Uh..yeah. No questions.."Right then her phone pinged indicating a message just had come. This was also weird because Lily always keeps her phone on silent. Lily immediately checked the message. And Doyoung was beyond confused by what he saw next.
Is..is she smiling?
Doyoung quickly pulled down the glasses that were resting on the top of his head and looked again closely. Her face was back to normal but Doyoung swore she could see a small genuine curve at the corner of her lips. Well..now that's very unusual.
"This one..was actually kinda funny.."Lily said as she typed in something in her phone.
Doyoung didn't know what to feel anymore. He was shocked. The fact that Lily might've actually smiled was beyond astonishing. How long had it been since she actually smiled? How long had it been since he saw her smile? Long. Really long.
"Who got you smiling like that? Got a boyfriend or something?"Doyoung asked trying to sound as nonchalant as possible.
"No one's smiling, you blindass,"Lily said when she finished typing.
"Aha? Then whose messages are you checking so diligently?"
"Jungkook keeps sending me funny videos. One out of twenty of them are actually a teeny bit funny. Anyway..what were you saying about our next target?"Lily asked changing the topic.
Doyoung frowned,"Jungkook as in..your closet demon?"
"Hmm,"Lily said as if her closet monster sending her funny videos is the most normal thing in the planet.
This shit again?
She hasn't been talking about her closet monster a lot these days in front him because she thinks he's one 'skeptical ass rascal who doesn't believe her' but there are a few times she mentions him. And Doyoung has been noticing an alarming rate of subtle changes in Lily. She these days is going home for dinner early, she has been really distracted lately, she seems a tiny bit vibrant as if something good is happening to her and so many subtle changes. Doyoung is glad that she seems to do well and have some positive changes that he's been trying to make her do for so many years, but to think she's doing all that because of a closet monster? Are these changes actually positive?
And what actually is this closet monster's deal? He used to think that it's cause of drugs. But now he has put an halt to that thought because when he talks to her she doesn't ever sound high or trippy. So that brings him to his next conclusion. It's definitely some psychological issue, her mind is making her imagine stuff. And this isn't even the first time she has imagined stuff like this. So he consulted a psychiatrist secretly. The psychiatrist said it would be helpful if he could talk to Lily instead, but Doyoung knows there's no way in hell Lily would agree to this. So he would have to do something by himself. Before this closet monster thing gets way out of hand.
All Doyoung knows is he needs to get to the bottom of this. He can't let lily get more hurt when she realizes that Jungkook isn't real. He has to do something.
At first he has to make sure that Lily really believes there's a closet monster in her house and is not faking it to prank him. But making sure of that would be hard. It's hard to do anything, without getting caught by Lily.
"Anyway so that's it for today, I guess. I should also call it a day."
"That's unlike you. Are you sick or something?"
"No. Just don't feel like working too much today. You wanna go for a cup of coffee or something?"
"If you're paying."
"When do I not pay?"Doyoung rolled his eyes and got up while taking his wallet and other necessary things from the drawer next of him,"Let's go."
"Thanks for dropping me off, I guess,"Lily said while getting down from Doyoung's car in front of the bus station near Lily's house. They just had coffee and then Doyoung insisted on dropping her off since he had nothing better to do. Lily let him hopefully without suspecting anything. Lily seems pretty calm till now. So Doyoung hopes he's in the clear and would succeed his little mission.
"Mention not,"Doyoung said,"Imma be off now, bye."
"Wait a minute,"Lily said while leaning down to look through the car's window.
"Huh?"Doyoung who was about to start the car asked.
Lily's voice suddenly changed,"You were so nice to me today, didn't nag at all. All of it is kinda sus bruh. Are you.."
Doyoung instantly started to sweat. Did he get caught? Did she see what he had done to her phone when she went to the barista to bring the coffee? Is she gonna kill him?
"Lily-ah..I'm sor.."
"Are you sick anywhere?"
Doyoung threw imaginary confetti in his mind. Thank God she hasn't caught him.
"No I'm totally fine."
"Come on, you look half dead. Go see a doctor or something. I don't know."
Doyoung smiled,"Will do, ma'am."
Lily nodded,"Cool, bye now."
"Bye!"
Thank God.
When lily entered the house, Jungkook was nowhere to be found. Lily quickly rang his phone and he immediately picked up as if he was waiting for her call.
"Hello? Lily? Are you back home?"Jungkook's enthusiastic voice was heard.
"Yeah, where are you?"
"I'm at the rooftop. Come on over quickly. The sun is about to set. The sky looks really pretty. Quick!"
Lily hung up the phone. Without her knowing both corners of her lips slightly lifted up. Jungkook sounds so excited over such little stuff, it's adorable.
But soon Lily's face turned dark as another thought came in her mind. She walked over to her room and swiftly got her gun out of her suitcase. Then she proceeded to hide the gun in her belt under her big hoodie, making sure Jungkook couldn't see it. Otherwise his mood would be ruined to fast.
After Lily was done attaching the gun to her belt and smirked.
Her smirk wouldn't leave her face even when she walked out of the apartment.
The sky indeed looked beautiful. The sky was ablaze with the fire of the setting sun. It is true that things look most beautiful right before the moment they disappear. Just like this beautiful orange sky.
Lily and Jungkook were sitting side by side on a small wooden bench on the roof, looking at the magnificent sky. One of them was blissfully unaware of what the other was planning or what show would go down in this peaceful empty roof in a couple of minutes.
Lily was sitting while hugging her knees and holding her phone in one hand. Under this orange light, she looked ethereal. So beautiful. So peaceful.
Jungkook unknowingly kept stealing glances of her.
"So.."Lily started the conversation,"What have you been up to the whole day?"
"Just surfing the internet. I found this new app, tiktok.."
"Jungkook-ah, can you speak a little louder? I can't hear you properly."
Jungkook nodded, even though they were sitting right by each other he spoke a little louder without questioning her,"I found this app called tiktok where people make all sorts of videos. The time duration of them is short but some of them are really enjoyable. I would send you some later."
"Okay!"Lily said,"What should we have for dinner tonight, Jungkook?"
"Umm..chicken? Ramen? Pizza? Ah I can't choose!"
"Let's go for pizza. It's perfect for tonight."
"Okay!"
Lily was silent while looking at the sky for sometime. Jungkook wanted to talk to her but she seemed to be lost in thoughts so he didn't want to disturb her.
Lily once again was the first to break the silence. This time with a shocking topic and a colder voice.
"You do remember that you're the one that's gonna find my father, right?"
Jungkook was taken aback by the sudden topic. None of them had brought up this topic in front of the other since the very first night she told him her wish. Jungkook still doesn't know how he should approach this highly sensitive topic of conversation.
"Yes, I do."
"Louder, when are you gonna start searching?"
"Lily, for that I need to increase my power and as your father also has a bo..."
Right before Jungkook could finish his sentence a lot of things happened at once making his heart beat accelerate so much that it felt like it's gonna come out of his chest.
The door of the roof bursted open revealing a very handsome guy wearing all black including black glasses. The stranger walked in with a gun pointed right at Jungkook as he screamed,"You fucking fraud!"
Lily also jumped up from her seat as soon as it happened, got a gun out from under her hoodie and pointed at the stranger as if she were prepared for this,"I fucking knew it!"
Jungkook was so stunned by all of this he didn't know what to say or do. His brain wasn't processing anything.
What the heck is happening?
"I knew something was fucking up,"Lily said while still pointing her gun at the stranger. She seemed angry. Unbelievably,"You really dared to put a recorder on my phone? You thought I wouldn't notice?"
"Can't you fucking see that this guy is manipulating and scamming you? Closet monster? Demon? As if!"The guy snorted.
It finally clicked to Jungkook. He has heard this person's voice before. He thinks he knows who this is. He finally mustered up courage to say something,"Guys guys..calm down.."
That guy glared at Jungkook as if he were the biggest sinner in the whole world and he put his finger on the trigger.
"Put the damn gun down, you betrayer,"Lily screamed.
"Are you fucking serious?"He asked her,"Can't you see that he's taking advantage of your desperation of finding your father? Are you that gullible?"
"Put the damn gun down."
"I don't know how you met this bastard but I'm gonna make sure he doesn't live another day to try and scam other people."
"Put the gun down, Kim Dongyoung !"
"What the fuck is wrong with you, Choi Yerim? "
Jungkook widened his eyes. He knows shit is about to go down now that they both have called each other by their real names. Jungkook can't let a big misunderstanding result in a big mess.
As soon as Lily heard her real name fall from his mouth, something in her twitched. She got angrier. She held her gun tighter and right as she was about to pull the trigger, what felt like a gush of wind came, engulfed her entire form and snatched the gun out of her hand, leaving her dumbfounded. The same happened to him, his gun was taken out of his hand. All of it happened before they could even process what was happening.
They both turned and saw Jungkook standing with both of their guns in his hand,"Both of you, calm down,"Jungkook then looked at Lily,"Especially you."
"H..ow..?"The guy choked, astonished by what just happened.
Lily looked at him, smugness radiating from her aura of proving him wrong,"See? You skeptical ass bastard? How would you explain this now?"
He looked at her, clearly lost about this whole situation.
Jungkook started,"I think there's a little misunderstanding. It can be resolved easily, there was no point of raising guns at your friend.."
"Tsk, he's not my friend,"Lily said while coming and sitting back at the wooden bench and staring back at the sky.
"Come on, he did all that because he was worried about you,"Jungkook said,"I think you two should talk it out..without any weapons involved."
"What are you? His lawyer?"Lily asked looking at Jungkook.
"Come on, Lily. Let's go home. You two really should talk it o.."
"The sun is about to set, come sit down,"Lily said shutting him off. She even patted the empty space beside her,"You wanted to see the sunset, didn't you?"
"But.."
"Just come. We would see what we can do after watching the sunset."
"Oh..okay?" Jungkook nodded and looked at the guy.
Lily followed his eyes and looked at the guy. She rolled her eyes,"You too. Come watch the sunset."
The guy who was stuck like a statue, processing the entire situating was pulled out of his train of thoughts when he heard that,"Huh?"
"Quick, we are gonna miss the sun set,"Lily said while patting the other side beside her on the bench.
"Oh..yeah..I guess.."He slowly came and sat beside Lily causally as if she wasn't just pointing a gun at his face a few seconds ago.
"It's pretty, right?"Lily asked.
"Yeah,"He said.
"We have to have a long discussion about your behavior today, Doyoung-sshi,"Lily said while smirking.
"I guess so too. A very long one."
"Pizza for dinner?"
"Obviously."
Jungkook smiled looking at them. That's probably just how their friendship is. Unpredictable, full of surprises.
Lily turned back to Jungkook,"Why aren't you sitting down?"
"Coming,"Jungkook smiled.
The sunset was indeed unreal that day.
