Chestnut;; MudWing OC

I remember reading about this character in another bio about a month ago, which shows how lazy I am.

This character was submitted by LoleusFronto.

BASIC INFORMATION;;
------ Name: Chestnut.
I like that name for a MudWing.

------ Nickname: Ol' Chestnut.
Cute.

------ Age: 82 (current timeline. Most of her backstory happens over sixty years ago).
I'd like to think her life began before she was 82.

------ Gender: Cisgender female.
Cool!

------ Sexuality: Heteromantic asexual.
I see a lot of old characters who are asexual. I get that it's a bit weird, imagining a senior being attracted to someone, but keep in mind that most people did in their younger years.

------ Tribe: MudWing.
Always a pleasure seeing a MudWing OC.

------ Abilities: MudWing stuff and is pretty strong too.
Isn't that a part of MudWing stuff?

------ Relationship Status: Widow (will explain later).
I actually haven't come across a dragon referred to as a widow before.

------ Occupation: Currently is a carpenter in Possibility (I really like that town okay?), formerly a doctor, formerly a museum guard.
That's a pretty wide range of jobs. Possibility is a quaint little town, to be fair.

--

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION;;
She has chestnut coloured scales (hence her name), a lighter brown for her underbelly and is a bit lanky for a MudWing.
I thought she was strong? Lanky and strong don't really go together.

She only has her right eye and has many scars all over her body but they have mostly faded over the years. She was considered a very pretty dragon when she was younger.
Ooo, I wonder how that happened?

--

PERSONALITY;;
------ Strengths: She's observant, creative and quick-witted. She's open to conversations and is good at working with dragonets. Chestnut's also a logical thinker (most of the time). She loves working.
These all flow together quite well. She sounds charming.

------ Flaws: She was recklessly brave when she was younger, and has a tendency to cry with any emotion (be it sadness, fury, happiness, or frustration).
Ah, so I'm assuming the "logical thinker" trait is something that developed over time?

She's a bit old fashioned when it comes to controversial topics such as hybrids, intertribal relationships, homosexuality and transgenders, however she's trying her best to understand and accept them. (Such as how she's accepted the fact that her great grand-niece Cricket is lesbian).
Aww, that's really sweet.

((Disclaimer: I'm not anti-LGBT+ I just feel like these views would make sense for an old character like Chestnut.))
Your character's views don't have to reflect your own. You're right in that sense, although bear in mind that LGBT has existed in Pyrrhia since Darkstalker's era (refer to Snowflake and Snowfox). Of course, if she was raised in an environment where LGBT and things like hybrids were uncommon, it makes sense that she's feel that way. I'm glad you included this disclaimer, though.

BACKSTORY;;
Okay, first let's back it up because a lot of this is based on a headcanon I have. So, before how it is in the current MudWing (with the whole breeding night thing) relationships were usually like a typical nuclear family with a father, mother and children. This however was abolished and replaced with breeding nights and sibling loyalty when the old queen got dumped by her lover so she thought "Well if I can't be loved, nobody can! Plus siblings are better! Who needs a romance anyway?"

That's a very interesting idea! I'll bear it in mind.

Also MudWings were renowned for their artistic skills until a certain incident I will talk about later. Anyways... back to the character.
Aw, I wonder what happened to change that.

Chestnut was born to a mother who was a potter and an artistic father. She had two younger brothers and an older sister. She and her siblings were raised to hold some artistic talent, getting taught pottery by their mother and painting by their father.
So I'm assuming this was before your headcanon took place, then?

Chestnut was a good artist but compared to her siblings, her artwork absolutely paled in comparison.
Aw, poor baby.

However there was one thing that nobody could doubt, that Chestnut could almost always beat them in a fight.
Huh, interesting.

When Chestnut reached adolescence it was clear that Chestnut would not be able to make a career as an artist. Her paintings were average and she had little improvement since she was a dragonet. So, her father knew a guy who knew a guy who could get her a job as a museum guard at the Mudwing Kingdom's only art museum.
Fascinating! It seems a bit cruel of her father, carelessly sending her away - but that is something a Pyrrhian would do. How did her siblings feel about it?

At that museum, Chestnut saw sculptures, paintings, tapestries, and pottery from all different tribes. At the museum dragons from all the tribes would visit. (The museum was also in a mountain).
Sounds charming.

Chestnut usually stood guard at the entrance alongside with another guard Thrush. They would check for any shady figures who might want to steal or destroy any of the exhibits. During their first break together they discovered they had similar families. Thrush, like Chestnut had two artist parents. Though, unlike Chestnut, both of his parents were sculptors.
What tribe was Thrush? I'm assuming SkyWing, based on his name.

Sometimes during breaks they would have insults battles to see who was better at insulting. Both were fans of action stories so sometimes they'd imagine catching a criminal red-handed and being bad-asses while doing it. Their friendship just clicked like that.
I like it! They seem to compliment each other well. You didn't really mention the "insults and action stories" side to her personality, which is a pity, because it sounds interesting.

Eventually it became more than friendship, and after ten years of working together as guards they became husband and wife. They continued their jobs as married dragons. Onetime they drew a painting (though it was mostly Thrush) and submitted it to the museum to displayed and it was accepted.
Adorable. You don't draw paintings though - you paint them. "Painted a picture" would be a better wording.

They had no dragonets because both wanted to spend all their time protecting the paintings they loved.
That's dedication.

One day however, a SkyWing came into the museum. He had nothing with him except a necklace with a pouch around his neck. Thrush and Chestnut thought nothing of it because they assumed it was just a pouch with a keepsake in it. Unfortunately, they had thought wrong.
Oh no.
(Hold on - didn't you say Chestnut was observant?)

Around that time there were rising tensions between the SandWings and SkyWings and that day an old famous SandWing painting had been donated to the museum. So what better way to try and break the SandWing spirit then destroy one of their most precious artefacts?
Oh no.

The SkywWng had actually hidden three dragonflame cacti in his pouch. And only moments after he had gone in, was when he set off one of the bombs.
OH NO.
Okay, logically though - that seems a bit extreme. Why would you destroy an entire MudWing museum over a vendetta with the SandWings? Surely it'd be better just to take the painting and destroy it.

The roof of the caves started collapsing and Chestnut and the rest of the guards desperately tried to bring as many dragons out of the cave as they could but some dragons had already been crushed to death by the falling roofs.
This stood out as pretty vivid to me. I'm not sure why.

When they believed they had gotten all the surviving dragons out Thrush immediately rushed back in to the museum.
Why? That's pretty foolish of him.

Nobody noticed except for Chestnut a few minutes later. She ran back in to get her husband back. She found him all the way in the midst of the fire in painting gallery, where almost all the paintings were burning. The galleries had not collapsed yet and were barely holding up.
Sounds like Thrush needs to learn to prioritize. This picture must've held a lot of significance to them if he ran into a burning building to get there.

Thrush was holding the painting they drew together. He was terribly burned and scratched by shrapnel, he shoved the painting towards her and begged her to leave as fast she could. Chestnut was going to leave the painting behind and bring Thrush back with her when the second explosion occurred.
Chestnut no he literally went in there to get the painting don't leave it behind.

The roof collapsed where he was and he was buried under the rubble. Chestnut knew it was too late to save him then, and ran as fast as she could with their painting.
You monster.

As she ran back she was scratched and burned by the flames and shrapnel. One of the falling rubble gave her a deep cut in her left eye.
How badly injured was she?

She barely returned and the painting had been horribly burned and torn.
So Thrush's sacrifice was all for nothing?

The last explosion occurred and the entrance to the museum was blocked with rubble. The bodies of the dragons who were lost would not be recovered.
What happened to the dragon who set off the bomb?

The museum was closed indefinitely and the grief-stricken Chestnut was sent to a hospital where her left eye was removed and she recovered from both her physical wounds and the wounds in mind. Though it still took her many years after her physical recovery to get over Thrush and the paintings they had loved so much.
This is heartbreaking! Did her siblings know about any of this? Could they have supported her?

The painting she had saved was given to her to keep since it was in no shape to be displayed if the museum ever reopened. Though after all the years, it never did reopen because dragons were too scared that something horrible like the explosion might happen again. The SkyWing was never identified and it was assumed that he either died from the last explosion, or killed himself after it. Either way, he was never seen again despite all of Chestnut's desperate efforts for him to be found.
Ah, there it is. It makes sense that Chestnut would be so desperate to find him.

After having to give up the search for the SkyWing, Chestnut started to study medicinal practice and eventually became a doctor. She worked in the same hospital she had been sent to, and worked there from then until the war ended.
What prompted that decision?

After the war, her coworkers insisted she retire after over 30 years of her service. As much as she protested, Chestnut eventually gave up and retired. Well, she retired from being a doctor that is.
That's kind of them.

Chestnut moved to Possibility to meet her great grand-niece Cricket for the first time since Cricket and her siblings were born.
Where are her siblings, though?

Chestnut would tell Cricket stories of her life as a museum guard. Not only did she tell the story of the cave explosion but of other times such as when they caught a dragon trying to edit someone's painting where everybody could see her.
"Edit". Pffffft.

Half a year passed since the war and Chestnut runs a carpenter's shop where Cricket helps out sometimes.
Why a carpenter's shop? You never mentioned she had that skill.

When Chestnut closes her shop she'll sometimes work on improving her painting skills to replicate the painting she and Thrush had created and to try and create enough paintings in hopes to get the museum she failed to protect to reopen after so many years.
That's a lovely conclusion, although I can't see how one painter would be able to reopen a museum with her work alone.

(I'm sorry for the hecka long backstory).
Never apologise for a hecka long backstory.

COMMENTS;;
------ The good...
A lovely character overall. Senior OCs are always a treasure to come across - as are MudWings. Her personality is coherent and her backstory absolutely destroyed me. But that's okay, because it was mostly well-developed.

------ The bad...
The only thing I can really comment on here is the backstory - hence the "mostly". There were several things that struck me as odd or poorly-explained. Firstly, her father's sending her away; you didn't really give any clue as to how she or her siblings felt, or whether they stayed in touch. That's the biggest issue, really; you never mention her family outside of her early life. This is one of the most common mistakes a writer can make. It's highly unlikely that a close-knit MudWing family would lose contact of one of their own so easily - even if she was the worst artist. In her accident, they'd most likely be scrambling over their own tails to get to her to help. Why were none of them there in the hospital?
Secondly, there's Thrush's death. However tragic it is, his reasoning seems pointless. Who cares about a painting in a burning museum? If he knew Chestnut was safe - and that it was dangerous to go back - why would Thrush risk his own life dashing into the museum to retrieve one picture they made?
I'm also a bit bewildered by the SkyWing who set off the bombs. Yes, a quarrel with the SandWings is all very well, but why would they destroy a MudWing museum? It seems a bit petty to me, and not very fair.

------ How you can improve!
Definitely add the siblings in, somewhere. It doesn't have to be significant. Maybe they exchanged letters until they fell out of contact. Maybe their parents forbade them from seeing her. Maybe they all died. Whatever it was, you need to include them in somewhere, since it's very unlikely that they'd just drift out of Chestnut's story like that.
Regarding the issue with Thrush's death, I'd recommend either going into a bit more detail about Thrush being impulsive, or explaining why the picture is so significant to them that he had to go into a burning building to get it.
Finally, as for the SkyWing, I would take care of that by creating an alliance between the MudWings and SandWings. That would explain why the SkyWings would attack a MudWing building, to spite their main rival. Of course, this would require some explaining with Thrush's presence (if he is a SkyWing, of course), but I think you can pull that off.

OVERALL RATING;; 8/10.
