chapter five
CLOSED HEARTS
◜ Choir and Professors ◝
All the Hogwarts students sat in the Great Hall as Professor Flitwick instructed the Hogwarts Band. Adalina and Mack watched proudly from their table, as Nova sang. Giant smiles decorating their faces, they were extremely proud of their best friend.
During Adalina's first three years at Hogwarts she had gotten close with many students, mostly from Ravenclaw but a few here and there from other houses such as Hufflepuff. Who could truly despise Hufflepuff?
The three friends she had made on the train during her first year, no longer were considered her friends. Seeing as they were too busy getting themselves into trouble and saving the world. They would all occasionally spend time together: in class, during lunch periods, etc. Yet they weren't close enough.
Adalina had also learned over the years that not all Slytherin members were evil. In fact she had made herself acquainted with many members, most specifically Elijah Crabbe.
A fifth year slytherin who thrived for mischief. He wasn't like his younger brother at all, sure he was a Slytherin but he was probably the sweetest one out there. He had his devious and intimidating moments, but in the end he would always be there to help you. Some people even wondered if the hat had made the right choice to place him there.
During the years Adalina had also learned to be more confident in herself and to be proud of who she was. Her house made her want to be the best version of herself, to always strive for success.
Yet she had become more stubborn, she did not like to be told she was wrong. If you were to even tell her that, she would probably not talk to the person who said it for a really long time. Mack Van Jong had learned his lesson to not tell Adalina when she was wrong, during their second year.
During a Potions class, Adalina had accidentally grabbed the wrong ingredient and before she could put in the next ingredient Mack stopped her telling her about the mistake. Adalina glared at him intensely and kept eye contact with him, as she threw the other ingredient in.
When nothing happened she smirked at him and scoffed returning to her potion, when all of the sudden the potion let out a red gas knocking everyone in the room out except Adalina and Mack, both of them panick as they saw Professor Snape fall to the floor along with their classmates unconscious.
Adalina didn't talk to Mack for a month, she knew he didn't have any fault and that it was hers for not listening. Yet she couldn't face the embarrassment and chose to not speak to him instead.
For Mack it was living hell not talking to her, after all she was his best friend – along with Nova. But who else was he going to talk about his secret crush? Who was he going to rant to about Nova's habit of spilling secrets? That was the reason why he didn't tell Nova such matters.
As the choir finished, the students left the Great Hall. Adalina gave Nova two thumbs up as the brunette passed next to them, she smiled shyly. Adalina turned her attention back to the front where Headmaster Dumbledore had begun talking. Her mid shifted though the a flashback of last year's welcome-banquet.
"Welcome! Welcome to another year at Hogwarts! I have a few things to say, before we become befuddled by our excellent feast. First, I'm pleased to welcome Professor R.J. Lupin, who has kindly consented to fill the post of Defense Against the Dark Arts. Good luck professor!" Dumbledore welcomed, the named man stood up and bowed. Adalina looked at Padma Patil who sat before her, a friend of hers and fellow housemate and then she looked at Mack all of them approving of the new man.
Hopefully this one will be normal and stay, Adalina thought to herself as she clapped.
"As some of you may know, Professor Kettleburn, our Care of Magical Creatures teacher for many years, has decided to retire in order to spend more time with his remaining limbs. Fortunately, I'm delighted to announce that his place will be filled by none other than our own Rubeus Hagrid!" Dumbledore announced, a few catered applause came from across the room. Mostly from three of the four houses.
Hagrid stood up moving the table as he did, making a few things fall. Adalina and Mack chuckled as they saw the others professors react to this. He then sat down with the other three professors staring at him.
" Finally, on a more disquieting note, Hogwarts – at the request of the Ministry of Magic – will, until further notice, play host to the Dementors of Azkaban. Until such a time Sirius Black is captured." As Dumbledore announced that, murmurs erupted in the Hall. Adalina frowned and stared at Mack and Padma both of them in equal shock.
"The Dementors will be stationed at the entrances to the grounds. Now whilst I've been assured that their presence will not disrupt our day to day activities. A word of caution, Dementors are vicious creatures. They will not distinguish between the one they hunt and the one who gets in their way. Therefore, I must warn each and everyone of you give them no reason to harm you. It is not in the nature of a Dementor to be forgiving. But you know happiness can be found even in the darkest of times, when only remembers to turn on the light." After Dumbledore finished they all began to eat, the choir members entering the hall again.
Nova found herself sitting next to Padma and Cho Chang, another housemate. She cringed as she saw Mack chewing his food with his mouth open, she threw him a charm which made his mouth close. He widened his eyes at the sudden action and reversed it, taking the warning as he continued to eat with his mouth closed. Padma shot Nova a thankful smile.
"I can't believe Sirius Black is out of Azkaban." Cho expressed, worry lancing her tone.
"I heard from my uncle who works at the Ministry, he's on the look for Harry." Mack told them, after gulping down his food. Nova scoffed at the news.
"What would he want with Harry?" She asked not comprehending.
"Probably to kill him after all, he was one of You-Know-Who's followers." Padma replied, as she took a sip of her drink. They all turned to look at Adalina who had not muttered a word. Adalina felt their stares and looked up from her food, blushing.
"I don't exactly care about him right now, I'm honestly much more interested in the food before me." She answered, her friends laughed and decided to stop the conversation returning to their plates.
Little did she know at that moment how much chaos the famous escape from Azkaban would bring her and her friends. Causing her to befriend some people she usually wouldn't spend much thought on. Such as Neville Longbottom, the Weasley twins and Cedric Diggory, All for different reasons but brought into her life due to one man, who she hadn't even met.
Only distant stories from her parents and uncle. As they recall their time at school with Sirius Black. All of them having different opinions on him. Her father wasn't fond of him but her mother adored him, recalling their friendship. While her uncle seemed to have mixed feelings about him, recognizing him as a past friend who had committed something very atrocious and didn't want to speak of him.
Yet all of this was in the past now. Adalina was in her fourth year and she didn't want to think much about the escapee. So as Dumbledore gave his annual speech welcoming the new faculty members, she glanced at her friend group and smiled to herself.
She watched as Cho and Padma argued over which Quidditch team was better. As Nova — who had walked back inside the Great Hall — enthusiastically talked with Mack about the Arts. Luna Lovegood, a recent addition to their group, talked to Peeves while Lisa Turpin and Terry Boot tried their best to avoid the poltergeister's eyes.
Two tables over Hermione was staring at her, Adalina looked up and saw her. They shared a smile, and Hermione went back into the conversation she was having with Harry. As Adalina's eyes glanced over the Hall, her eyes caught another pair, Draco's. He smirked at her, while she scoffed breaking eye contact and returned to her food.
