'QURBAT' Review

(I read the first collection, so the grading of your plot, creativity, and reader enjoyment will be based on that.)

Author:

Cover: Your cover looks more like a mood board rather than an actual cover. I will admit that it gives away what your book is about, but, regardless of whether you were trying to go for a more abstract look, it doesn't fit well as a cover. I can barely see the title and all the images are too different. They might share a theme, but it doesn't look well overall. As a reader, this is definitely something that would make me cringe and move on.  As always, I recommend going to a graphic shop.

Title(5/5): A few other books feature the same title as yours, but other than that it really is unique. Books with words that you don't usually find make me want to keep going to read, find out what it means, and how it relates to the story.

Blurb(8/10): Personally, I'm not one for short blurbs, especially blurbs as short as yours. You say it's a collection of short stories and I can see that you've summarized that well, but it would be nice to see it a bit more of a filler blurb. When I say 'filler', I mean that I would like for there to be a bit more background information on what it's all about. I'm not saying that you haven't done that, but it's more of a personal recommendation and not something you actually have to do.

Spelling/Grammar(14/15): Your spelling and grammar is fine, so there's nothing that I have to comment on. There are a few minor punctuation mistakes, but those can easily be fixed when you go back to edit.

Creativity/Originality(20/20): What makes this creative in it's own right was the way you strayed from the typical male character. You mention in the first chapter that men weren't supposed to mourn their wives, because as far as they were concerned they could easily be replaced. In Fahad's case, he truly loved his wife. He was raised from a young age to not let people see through him so easily, and in my opinion, this makes him more human. It shows that even early on, males struggled with having to conform to what society wanted instead of what they wanted. (In other words, toxic masculinity.)

Plot(25/25): The plot is also interesting in its own right. Fahad wants to find a new wife that won't make things so hard for him and can take care of his kids. The only problem with this new wife is that her background isn't worth of his family name. With time, Nusrat learns that her place as his wife is simply to take care of his children. Nothing more and nothing less. It's clear that he has a lot of responsibilities as a leader, but instead of completely closing up and ignoring Nusrat, he slowly begins opening up to her. Then they decide to become a real couple. A real husband and wife, which was written in such a sweet way.

Reader Enjoyment(25/25): In all honesty, the language switch during chapters didn't off-put me as much as I thought it would. Both languages flowed well together and even a reader who isn't a native speaker can get a handle of the plot. Overall, Tishnagi was a beautiful story.

Total: 97/100
