War

I sneak into the makeshift camp of the enemy. I've been scoping out the area for a while now and they haven't noticed me here.

It's been a hard battle and our side was losing and I have been sent to find out where our captured soldiers are located but after searching through the camp I have found where the captives and the enemy general are.

I was told to report back where they were so troops could storm the camp but I don't know whether they'll survive that long and the general will probably change location soon. There is too much at stake to try and reach my allies in time for them to attack.

So I'm going to sneak into the prisons, get the remaining soldiers, then kill the general. Doesn't sound easy and it is definitely not, but I need to risk it. This would be a big turning point if I succeed and if I don't survive, well, that's the job isn't it?

I leave my small set up base and I manage to get into the enemy camp without being noticed. I reach the prison area after weaving my way through the soldier patrols and camouflaged tents. There's two guys guarding the tied up and gaged soldiers. I shoot the man furthest from me with my silenced gun in the chest and before the other one could turn around, I put another bullet in the back of his skull.

I untie the captives as swiftly as I can. They're bloody and bruised and only half of them remain but now I can see genuine hope in their eyes. Some of them steal as much of the dead soldiers' guns and equipment as they could and we sneak out once there was a gap in the enemy patrol.

We quickly rush to get out of the camp but then I see the general swiftly enter a tent pitched up messily out of the corner of my eye. I decide to stick to my original plan even though I desperately want these people to get out safely. I need to realise this is more important. I signal to the others to hide and wait for me. They look concerned but follow my orders and disperse to hide anywhere they could as I slide behind some crates of supplies beside the tent I saw the general enter.

I peek through a gap in the fabric of the tent. There he was, standing there pointing out areas on a battle map and explaining strategies to two of his soldiers. I try to get a look around the room but it covered in shadow and there's only one oil lamp beside the map used as light source in there but from what I can see, they seem to be the only people in the room so I take this as my perfect opportunity.

I walk low and quick, out from behind the crates once there was no one in sight. The captured soldiers are well hidden as I peer around for any sight of them, so I quickly jump into the tent and aim my gun at the general's head.

A millisecond before I pull the trigger, I feel something cold pressed against my temple. I hold my gun dead still, fixed on the general's head and my eyes flicker to my side to see a pistol held on my head, lightly pressing in to my skin and then I notice the familiar figure hold the gun.

"I'm sorry"

The words escape their lips in a whisper. My eyes close briefly and I take a deep breath which broke the rhythm of my quick, shallow breaths before. I feel a cold chill down my spine while the rest of my body feels hot and sweaty. It is like an eternity was spent on me executing this terrible plan, and this moment has lasted even longer. I slowly breathe out a rattling breath and suddenly, a gunshot rings in my ear...

Then I open my eyes.
