WE JUST REACHED OUR 100 CHAPPIE!

Honestly, i never expected that i'll go this far in terms of updating my work here on wattpad. But considering the amount of support, feedback and kind words I've received along the way proves for sure that this achievement is a joint one. And i honestly owe a thanks to the Cliche-fam from 20+ countries around the world who made this happen.

You guys are awesome!

Now as i promised, let's discuss wattpad.

Hope you find this stuff informative.

p.s. text written in italics represent wattpad's policies, words and statements.

1. Is Wattpad safe?

i. In terms of user privacy

If you're just browsing our Site, we don't collect any Personal Information about you. In order for you to create an account with Wattpad and use our Services, we need to collect and process some Personal Information. Depending on your use of the Services, that may include: Your  username, email address, date of birth, and password. Moreover the Information you choose to give to us, such as your real name, gender, location, IP addresses, reading habits onsite, browser and operating system.

From this we understand that wattpad requires this data to facilitate the algorithm, preferences/recommendations, to control spam, ensure the legitimacy of your account, avoid bots, personalization/customization of the site and to communicate with you.

As per wattpad policy, your data is encrypted and is used in generating statistics and trends to monitor and suggest you something better every time you revisit the site.

Your email is the only mandatory part of the data you are providing. Which too is needed for the site to be able to communicate with you and let you know if you ever end up winning a watty or something.

Safe or not? [Safe]

ii. In terms of your book/Ideas/content

Wattpad has adopted a policy toward copyright infringement on the Services in accordance with the United States Digital Millennium Copyright Act (the "DMCA"). While our policy is based on the US law we apply this same policy globally to all jurisdictions in which our Services are available.

We sometimes come across websites that have illegally scraped content from Wattpad. When we find these sites we do our best to have them shutdown. In order to act on behalf of our users we need to have your legal permission to do that so we ask for it here when you sign up. You authorize us to act as your agent to issue take down notices under the DMCA and/or any other similar legislation that allows for the submission of requests to Internet service providers and any other person involved in the illegal posting for the removal of infringing or allegedly infringing copyright materials that are contained in or displayed on such service providers platforms and/or services.

Oh boy! there is a lot to say under this heading and statement...

1. Wattpad is no stranger to having its content being "reflected" off to other sites. Meaning whatever you are writing, it's being taken or fully stolen like a mirror image from this platform to another. I did a chapter on this too. (Title: Important). About a site that quite frequently steals user content. Even though wattpad promises to safeguard your stuff, yet, it cannot do that if the other site itself is filled with malware and is in some weird-ass language. Wattpad till today, is unable to get a strong stance against these mirroring sites.

2. Wattpad states that you own the rights to your story and your stuff is protected under a set law too. However, copyright laws are different worldwide and sadly many people don't consider stuff written online as "real work" Thus there is no real investment to fight for your work in some higher court if the offender lives in some other country where copyright laws are lenient.

3. The risk of somebody stealing your book as a whole is not very realistic since wattpad, despite the odds will atleast raise its voice if not stance. However, if someone was to steal the central idea or plot of your story and write a whole another story with the similar tale to tell, you'll never know about it. And even if you do, it'd be too late and not much could be done practically if you think about. Yet, unlike other sites, wattpad takes responsibility and so far no major cases have emerged.

However it should be kept in mind that wattpad has restricted the "copy/paste" function on the site. Thus, unless a person is dedicated enough to type everything out word to word they ain't taking your stuff.

On the contrary there are many people who claim that their ideas have been stolen, replicated and even had their whole books copied to other sites aswell.

This surely puts a question mark on wattpad.

Though, the site is improving as the years are going by and it is no longer just a  fanfiction site. New content is emerging everyday and think about it! Wattpad  pairs up with renowned brands including Netflix. They have grown so much and the site we see today is totally different from what it was 5 years ago. With sponsors, limelight etc etc comes credibility and reputation.

To keep it intact why would they compromise if someone else tried to plagiarize your work? A new story is being posted every few minutes and by the time you are done reading this 4-5 stories would've been published. So whats the probability that your story is the one that's gonna be stolen?

Anyway, you have to stay vigilant tho.

Safe or not: [Kinda....not fully]

2. Is wattpad worth it?

i. In terms of fame and getting an audience

Yes! Wattpad is a good platform to build an audience. While i won't say sustainable yet i'd say that during this age of technology, the future is gonna be more digital. Thus the scope of online publishing writing etc will surely increase. Traditional book sales and libraries are sadly declining nowadays ever since the start of kindle and similar e-reading devices.

Atleast you'd be well known online which will surely motivate you to traditionally publish your stuff. Since after all, the libraries etc won't cease to exist, fam. E-reading will just become more hip.

ii. In terms of money

Perhaps if you are a part of "paid story program" or sign up a contract if your story is being adapted for TV or Netflix. Honestly, the scope is not much. Considering that most peeps coming here aren't exactly employed, i doubt the possibility of a large number of people paying to read a story. Besides, the whole payment isn't being given to you. Since wattpad is also entitled to shave some money away from it too. Nah, not great unless you have 5 books with 10M reads each that are also simultaneously under the paid story program.

iii. In terms of writing stuff that isn't romance or flippity flappity?

Yes! From my personal observations based on digging up old stories etc, i realized one thing.

When wattpad was initially made, it wasn't picky about the stuff the users published since they needed their audience an didnt wanted to drive anyone away. So the trend of fanfications also swept wattpad and fanfictions were the reason why the site itself became popular. Wattpad wore this crown and basked in the growing number of users.

People liked romance....

....and they got romance in the steamiest way possible.

Now tell me, why would wattpad abandon these too genres during their initial era? It brought them the crowd. The audience.

-and the misleading title of a "fanfiction site"

What pisses me off are those random youtubers who feel entitled to just rant about the older version of wattpad. What many dont see is the high potential for other genres too.

Personally, ofcourse even today romance is the dominant genre, yet other genres are also well received. There are so many non-romance books that i've come across when i actually bothered to sort through wattpad.

Your book can make an impact if it has a good story and plot to offer.

Genre no longer matters. Now the content matters since the number of 13+ (age) peeps has also increased on this site.

More people are joining wattpad with diverse age and tastes and the site has a lot to offer other than just fanfictions. So keep writing and hope for the best.

3. What happens when i delete my account?

I'll quote the wattpad statement here:

You can permanently delete your Wattpad account. If you close your account, it will first be deactivated and then deleted. When your account is deactivated, while it is not viewable on Wattpad, all of your comments and message board posts to the Wattpad community will remain except that they will be anonymized. For six months after deactivation it is still possible to restore your account if it was accidentally or wrongfully deactivated, including re-associating your comments and message board posts to your profile. After six months, we permanently delete your account from our systems, except that your anonymized comments and message board posts will remain on the Services.

Ya'll heard the man.

And that's all folks. :)
