dinner at the kims house was very structured and polished. it was at the same time every night and everyone was expected to be in their seats with their hands washed and postures straight when the clock said 7 pm.
that's when taehyung came stumbling down the stairs at 6:59 pm with wet hands and wild hair, his mother just rose an eyebrow at her son who smiled sheepishly. "i used pomegranate soap." the boy said while holding his hands out over the table as if they could see that he clearly washed them.
"next time use a towel to dry them as well." his mother smiled and continued to fold her napkin in her lap.
they weren't some strict family with posh rules and rituals to follow, it was just easier this way, and habits were hard to break. most of it came from politeness as well. if their mother would spend evenings cooking for them all without a complaint leaving perfectly painted red lips, then the rest of the kims felt no reason to not follow these simple preferences.
"pass the green beans please." namjoon said to his brother, who obliged, and easily passed over his own plate. mrs. kim noticed this and rose an eyebrow at the boy, who just grinned again. "i want more mashed potatoes, i have no room for green beans." taehyung said, or maybe it was the stomach full of junk food speaking for him.
she just hummed and continued to serve her own food and passing on the dishes to her right where her husband sat at the head of the table. his eyes were busy looking at his phone, most likely something to do with work or a business partner that didn't understand the concept of family dinner time.
"are you sure it's not because you already had-" namjoon didn't get to finish that because his little brother kicked him in the shin from underneath the table. he grunted and glare at the innocently smiling boy, who just slapped a big stack of potatoes on his plate. taehyung set the bowl down and turned back to his mom, "hey mom, can i have friends sleep over friday night?"
mrs. kim started to cut her steak into strips, pushing them aside until it was completely done. "you know you don't have to ask sweetie." she told her son.
"i know." taehyung said, "but when there's an obscene amount of food missing the next day i'm just saying. it was probably hobi."
his parents knew this, they knew the boys had friends that came and ate away at the pantry and fridge until there was nothing left. they'd always have the house keepers and helpers go out for more for the following week. taehyung always asked anyways, it was the politeness maybe, or the fact that he seemed to always need to ask before he did things.
maybe that's seojoons fault. maybe that's why taehyung was here at dinner and not out with his boyfriend after seeing him at the gym.
"you wouldn't have fun." he had said.
maybe he's right. seojoon was usually right.

they had fourteen minutes before the dining hall opened for breakfast and then thirty more until the bell rang for homeroom. the two friends hung onto their books and walked across the courtyard as the sun started to peek over the tops of the school buildings. both were thinking about blueberry muffins.
"my mom said you guys can sleep over friday." taehyung said as he opened the doors for the two of them.
jimin started to bounce in his step, clapping dramatically with a wide smile, "oh fun we get to talk about boys." he was joking of course, and the bored expression returned two seconds later as they got in line. "can you ask her to make lasagna?" the boy always seemed to be thinking about food.
"you don't want to talk about boys, you just want to come over and try to flirt with namjoon." taehyung made a face when be said it. it was still gross to think about them two bring mushy together. plus his big brother was too stupid to notice that it wasn't just playful flirting coming from someone younger and jimin was legit into him.
jimin picked up a breakfast tray, muffin and a piece of fruit with a juice box, "you know me so well." he said. taehyung just laughed and the two left the line, walking out to the tables.
"so that jeon dude is hot." jimin was back on the topic of boys the second the bottom of their trays hit the top of the table. his friend just rolled his eyes and started to open up his own muffin, but taehyung couldn't help but think back to the dark haired male from yesterday. "kind of."
jimin sat back and stared at his friend, a bit of a bewildered look on his face. "kind of?" he repeated. that look of disbelief suddenly turned in a cheeky one, a little grin that soon turned into a giddy giggle. "you totally think he's hot."
"what- no i don't-" taehyung scoffed and looked around the large room, as if someone would hear something amongst the students and chatter going on. "i never said that." he said that part quieter. jimin just shrugged but he kept grinning, watching his friend get all flustered over the innocent accusation.
jimin ripped off a piece of his muffin and ate it in bits, making sure each part had a sufficient amount of blueberries in each bite. "you didn't need to." he teased with a mouthful of crumbs.
his friend was going to throw something back that was even more witty and clever, but taehyung became speechless as an arm was slung around his shoulders and a body occupied the spot beside him. seojoon sat really close, and he spoke close too — lips against his boyfriends ear. "i like this shirt." he said, running his fingertips over the part where the hem of the shirt laid nicely over taehyungs collarbones.
"i know," the boy said, disregarding his muffin and his friend from across the table making faces and rolling his eyes. "you told me to wear it." taehyung looked down at the pretty fabric, a thin material with patterns all over it that only he could actually pull off.
"and you listened so well." seojoon chuckled, a whisper against the boys skin before kissing his neck. taehyungs eyes closed involuntarily, but he did try to push the older boy away. "stop we're in public." the pink haired boy said, waiting to actually be heard. seojoon sighed and stood, "i'll text you." he said before leaving, disappearing in a fog of jocks and cheerleaders.
jimin was still making a face as the guy left, even pretending to gag. "you know what i realized about the hot guy from the gym." he said, waiting to continue when his friend finally looked away from his retreated boyfriend. "he spends time with you just as much as seojoon does."
that earned him a piece of muffin to the forehead, the crumb exploding in a shower of gluten free bits across the table between them. "you're awful you know that right?" taehyung said.
"yes it keeps me up at night, anyways about friday-" jimin continued to talk, but his words were lost in the air. taehyung didn't want breakfast anymore, there was no appetite left as he saw his boyfriend leave with pretty cheerleaders while the kiss still sat on his own neck, wondering if his neck was the only one.
it didn't matter. it wasn't even 8 am yet and it feels like so much has happened, too many thoughts running through his mind underneath pretty pink tufts of hair and tanned skin. taehyung was ready to go home to his bed and watch project runway.
