Chapter 74: Mackenzie, Almost There
Time to start the final year of High School. I know I shouldn't be hoping for some kind of peaceful year with Nina and the Dreamers fighting off villains and all that, but hey, it should be more peaceful.
"How does it feel to be on your last year of High School?" Echo asked curiously as she balanced a few of my textbooks on her head.
"Very surreal" I answered honestly.
After all, I didn't expect these past 4 years to go by so fast. It seems like it was just yesterday when I joined this school and made some lasting friends.
"Hey, what happens to you?" I asked her curiously.
Echo is my guardian, but is she always going to be there for me? Or does she leave me once I graduate High School?
"I am honestly not sure. We were only assigned to protect you and your friends from harm in case the Dreamers were not around" Echo explained, "I don't see why we can't help you in the future"
Aw! She is so sweet! We stopped at my classroom to give her a hug. She chuckled as I let her go. She went back to her world as I went to class. Well, this is the first day of my last year, how hard can it be?
After a few weeks, it can be much worse! I have three papers and three tests in just one week! I also have to apply to college. I thought applying to college would be the only issue I would have this year, but I guess not. I slumped forward and landed my head on the desk. I was already done with this year.
"Ruined at your last year? Shame. I had such high hopes for you" Echo said as she appeared at my side.
"As if you have to do any kind of work" I mumbled loudly through the papers.
"I did go to school and graduate" she answered as she jumped and sat on my comfy chair.
I looked up at her surprised. She went to school? I really don't know much about the Dreamers and whatever world she came from. I didn't think she had to go to school in her world. I assumed she was just a fighter.
"Yes, we went to school as well. Someone has to teach us how to properly use our powers, because we do not wish to end up like the Dreamers" she joked.
I had to laugh at that. They easily destroyed our school so many times over the year, but it was fun to miss class certain days. However, it was not ok to receive a lot of homework as a result. Actually, it made sense as to why we received a lot of homework, but I have a life. I want to do something before I die.
"Let's get to your homework. After all, this is your final year. Do your best, Mackenzie" Echo encouraged strongly.
She's not wrong. I took out my math book and began to do my homework before being summoned to dinner. I was able to get two assignments done as I was called down to dinner. I saw Hope and Brynn sitting at a table enjoying the dinner. It seems quiet tonight. I think the boys already had their weekly food fight. Thank god. That is so annoying. It was fun in the beginning until someone threw gum in my hair. That was the last straw for me and most students who care about their hair.
"So, how is everyone's first day?" I asked after I picked up the dinner.
"Ok. Right now, just waiting to hear back from a few colleges" Hope answered as she took a bite from her salad.
"I just want this year over and done with. I am almost at the end of the road, and I want off it" Brynn said as she finished her meal.
She seemed very tired for the first few weeks. I don't blame her. These first few weeks have been draining. I feel ready to collapse onto my bed. Actually, these weeks aren't that bad yet. The Dreamers haven't been in any kind of fights.
"Are the Dreamers still in school?" I asked them.
"Yes, but I recall they were called away to help someone out already" Brynn said as she took out her phone to show me a recent picture of the Dreamers embarking on their adventures.
I smiled at them. They were able to enjoy this and keep track of their homework. I put the spoon on my cheek as I pondered this thought.
"Do you ever want to do the things the Dreamers do?" I asked them.
The two of them starred at me for a moment as I ate my food. I looked up at them as they remained silent.
"Don't wish for that" they said in unison.
That was serious. I mean, I wouldn't want to live their lives. Oh gods, that would give me more stress than I need.
"I wasn't asking to have their life! I just wondered about it! That's all! I swear!" I said defensively.
"Be careful what you wish for" Brynn said as she finished her food and left us.
That was certainly ominous.
"We already have mishaps at the school. The rest of the Dreamers have to watch out for the world as well as our school. They also have to mange their homework and extra activities. I wouldn't wish that kind of stress on anyone" Hope explained to me as she took a sip from her drink.
Now, that makes sense. The Dreamers has much more activities to do. Well, I can't argue with that. I finished my food and went back to my room to finish the rest of my homework. When it was 10 pm, I went to bed on my soft bed. Maybe tomorrow will be a better day, because tomorrow will be the weekend.
"Time to wake up!" Echo shouted as she jumped onto my bed.
I groaned as I looked at my phone. It was just 10 am. I should be allowed to sleep in for the first weekend of the school year.
"Well, it is a good idea for you to get up and get some soccer practice in for you" she said as she hopped off my bed.
I sighed as I got off my bed and went to my closet. Well, I am almost there. I should definitely work a bit harder to get accepted into college. I got dressed and went to the field with Echo behind me. One of the great things about my guardian is that she gives me water for free! I don't have to worry about bottles anymore.
"Now, go out there and have some fun" Echo said as she sat underneath the shade of the tree.
I began to practice some kicks, ran around a bit, and did some simple exercises. However, the weather began to heat up. I don't recall Indiana every being this hot. I placed my hands on my knees as I felt the sweat fall off my face.
"Echo..." I asked weakly as I looked at her.
She was taking a nap, but the heat was getting hotter. Ok, something was clearly wrong here. I summoned my wand and cast a rain spell over the field. Rain poured down, but when it hit the ground, the rain evaporated!
"Who's there?!" I shouted as I ran to Echo and shook her awake.
She weakly opened her eyes as I cast a rain spell over her. She felt better, but we heard a shrill laugh coming towards us. In a flash of light, we saw a girl covered in gold and bear a strong resemblance to someone from Egypt.
"I came here hearing a rumor about the Dreamers being absent. Instead, I find a Skylander guarding her student. That is annoying" she boasted as she pointed her staff at us.
Who is she? Echo and her clearly know each other pretty well, but that might be because she is a villain.
"Golden Queen why are you here?" Echo demanded as she made water rise from the ground.
It looks like we are going to be a fight.
"I wanted to make some nice statues to my collection!" she shouted as pointed her staff at us.
She shot a golden beam at us. Echo quickly swung her tail underneath my feet and knocked me on the ground to avoid being hit by the beam! I let out a scream as I fell to the ground. Ok, yeah, I do not want to be a Dreamer if my life is going to be like this.
"Echo! How do we stop her?!" I shouted I rolled away from the golden beams.
"Just get your hairpins ready!" Echo shouted as she slammed her tail on the ground and caused the water to rise from the ground.
The water missed the Golden Queen's attacks, but she was getting tired. Echo continued to cast more and more water attacks towards her as I watched the entire event play out in front of me. Man, my guardian was tough! She wasn't even breaking a sweat!
"Mackenzie! Run to the other end of the field" she ordered as she ran away from the trees.
I held my wand as I ran towards the other end of the field. I stopped once I found myself facing the Golden Queen. I was shaking a bit as I faced her. She definitely had a scary feeling coming from her.
"Mackenzie! Throw!" Echo shouted as she took a breath in.
"Got it!" I shouted as I threw the hairpins.
Golden Queen prepared to protect herself from my hairpins, but Echo launched a water beam of her own. The Golden Queen was doused in water as Echo jumped at her! Echo tackled her to the ground and knocked her staff away.
"Mackenzie! Break that!" Echo shouted as she pinned Golden Queen down.
I grab the staff and snapped it in half. As I held the broken staff, the staff turned to sand! What did I just do?! I looked at Echo and the Golden Queen. Echo released Golden Queen as Golden Queen began to turn into sand!
"I'll be back for you!" she threatened my guardian.
Well, that's very rude.
"Sure, you will. You will see me when I am no longer here" Echo stated with pride as she disappeared into the sand.
She turned to me as I was shaking. If fighting like that is so hard, then I do not want that kind of life. I sat down as Echo placed her head on my lap.
"Don't worry. I will always be here for you. I will always help you out" she reassured me, "And I know your friends will always be there for you"
I petted her head as I smiled. I am so happy to be with her and my friends. I can always lean on them when I need support, no matter what. I don't know what I would do without these friends on my side. With them by my side, I will not almost make it. I will make it.
