Chapter 1
I set down the file carefully on my table after re-reading it for the tenth time. I sighed, leaning back in my chair, glaring at the file. Now I had to burn it. But what if I forget something? I considered taking notes on the important parts, but settled with reading it once again.
This was my very first solo mission. I had never done anything like this. I was so excited when I was handed a file at the meeting room, a file just for me. I had asked who my group members where, but they never gave me any.
"432," I said.
"Yeah?" Someone answered.
"What was your first solo mission?" I asked him, turning around and facing my friend.
We where sitting in our small room. Me and three others lived here, 432, also known as Hercules Mulligan, and 729 also known as Lafayette. I was 121. I called my friends by there code names, just to tease them. It was only necessary on missions.
"My first mission was a solo mission. Remember, I'm a spy, I don't need much partners. I just have to lay low and report to base," Hercules answered.
"I've been on a solo mission!" Lafayette pitched in.
"We kno-"
"It was back in 2035," Lafayette began before I could stop him. "I was sent to get close with a nine year old, and hopefully they would leak information on their parents who where supposedly hitman's."
"You've told us this a million ti-"
"The girls name was Rose, and her and I grew really close," Lafayette interrupted.
"YES YES, You wan't to adopt her once her parents are arrested but you can't THE END," Hercules grunted while Lafayette frowned.
"Well my mission is much more dangerous then that," I smirked.
"Mon ami, do tell," Lafayette smiled. "I can't," I said, tapping the red words on my file that read 'CLASSIFIED'.
I looked around our boring old room. It was made of concrete. No decorations. Just three beds, a light with flies flying around it and two desks. Plus our bags of supplies for our current missions.
"Right," Hercules sighed.
I smiled to myself. If I got this right, maybe Mr.Washington will promote me. He is the head of our secret department of the U.S. military. My dream is to one day work beside him at the very top, handing out assignments instead of doing them. Although, I would definitely miss the adventure and adrenaline of missions.
"Flight leaves tomorrow," I sighed.
"Where are you off to?" Lafayette asked.
"New York," I replied.
"That's far away," Hercules remarked.
Our secret base was in South Dakota, because nobody would ever expect a base to be here. I had been all over the U.S. on missions. I went to California, Hawaii, Alaska, Texas, Ohio, Oregon, Michigan, Maryland, West Virginia and Maine. I had always wanted to visit New York, now was my chance.
"To our missions," Hercules said, raising a small glass of champagne.
I looked around and saw two other glasses filled with the same liquid. I stood up and picked the glass on the left up in my hand, then lightly tapped it with Hercules.
"To our missions," Lafayette and I repeated. We all took a sip, then wen't over to our beds. We finished off the champagne, then put the glasses down. I looked out the little window that was on our door. It was the only window here. And it just showed us the hallway. I always felt like this place was almost a prison cell.
But after a year or two, I grew comfortable in it. Especially when I found a weak spot in the concrete wall under my bed and was able to carve out a small hole to hide precious objects of mine inside.
The rooms weren't used much anyway. They where temporary spaces for people like me to stay in until there next mission. One time, our room as empty for a month. I was off on a mission with Hercules and ten other people to California, to investigate a body and raid someones house, and Lafayette was off on a mission with only one other person, helping lead a small quiet attack on a kidnapper.
"Bonne nuit," Lafayette mumbled.
"Night," I replied quietly, still staring at the little window.
"GOODNIGHT!" Hercules shouted and we all covered our ears.
Then we started sleepily laughing. I rubbed my cheek into my pillow and closed my eyes, thinking of my mission. I realized I had forgotten to burn my file. I stood up, taking a small lighter out of my bag of supplies, which sat next to my bed. It was a black duffel bag, nothing special.
"What are you doing?" Hercules asked.
"Playing with fire," I smirked.
I picked up the file and lifted the lighter to it. Slowly it burned to ashes. I swept the gray and white ashes away with my hands, throwing them in the small trash can by my bed. The trash can was full of ashes from previous files.
I then walked over to my bed and settled down again, hoping I remembered all of my instructions.
*~*
Dressed in a big green hoodie and ripped jeans, I walked down the sidewalk, smelling the fresh disgusting city air. People yelled around me, the roads full of people and cars. Honking noises broke my eardrums. People bonking into me almost made me fall over five times now. The taste of pollution in my mouth.
Guess where I was? The greatest city in the world, New York.
I let my curly hair bounce behind me in a loose ponytail as I walked down the streets.
"WATCH IT!" Someone yelled.
I turned around to make sure they where not yelling at me, which they were not, so I kept walking. Eventually I found myself riding a subway to my hotel room. Then ten minutes later I'm sitting on a soft bed, with a large window stuck on a white wall that gave a great view of the city. I set down my bag, and walked to the window.
Taking my binoculars out, I peered through them at Subject 11's house. It was small, with two stories, probably a duplex. I used my binoculars to zoom in further, through the lenses everything was green for night vision purposes, it also had tiny numbers indicating things like how far the object I was looking at was.
I spotted movement on the second story, and watched a man quickly close curtains, then the lights wen't off. Suspicious.
I decided I would leave after dark, so I walked over to my bed and put my binoculars away. I took off my sneakers, setting them on the floor, and stood up to explore my room.
I had a small bathroom with a shower and a sink, a small kitchen with four draws, a mini fridge and a microwave. I also had a large closet, a bedside table with a lamp, a small desk and my queen bed. Not to bad. But the real question was...
Is there a pool?
Knowing Washington, he probably did get me a place with a pool. He always does. I always bring my swim suit.
I decided, though, that this was an important mission that I must not be as distracted as normal on. It was a solo mission, therefore I could not mess it up. Today was Friday, meaning at 10 pm tomorrow I would contact base. Or was it 2 Am? No, 1 Am.
I hit my head a couple times, until I was sure it was 2 Am. On 48? Yes, I would Walki Talki them at 2 Am, on station 48. Then why did my Walki say 09? What was that about? Then I remembered it was the fake number, so if my Walki got stolen everything would be okay.
I sat back on my bed and grabbed my duffel bag, checking the time on my watch in the process. Three more hours until sunset. That's when I would make my move on the subject. I quickly shuffled through my bag, making sure I had everything. All my guns, poisons, swords, snakes, elephants- Pfft I'm just kidding. I thought to myself. I talk to myself in my head like that all the time.
After I felt confident I had everything necessary, I texted my siblings. It isn't allowed, I know, but they where young and there was no way someone would find them and interrogate children, right? The oldest besides me was nine years old!
TotallyASecretSpyAgent: I'm in New York noobs. haha!
RobloxPro101: Boi u stop pretening 2 B in cool places
TotallyASecretSpyAgent: I am truly in New York!
MinecraftManiac: John, drop the act! We all know you are on a business trip in the Caribbean, you told us two years ago when you left. And you aren't a spy! stop saying that! you are a freaking marine biologist, get that in your head. What do you think you went to college for?
TotallyASecretSpyAgent: Sureeeeeeeeee
RobloxPro101: *Eye roll*
TotallyASecretSpyAgent: Stop roleplaying, thats for your weird Roblox addiction
RobloxPro101: *Yawns and turns around, walking away from John*
TotallyASecretSpyAgent: *Grabs a chancla and slaps le child*
MinecraftManiac: Bro you are to old to roleplay
TotallyASecretSpyAgent: *Laughs* No such thing
I could practically hear their giggling. I knew how to cheer them up, and they seriously needed cheering up. Every since I had to leave them for my career, they have been left alone with my father. He's not mean, hes actually quite the gentle soul, but when he gets mad sometimes he yells at the kids, taking his anger out on them.
I set my phone down as my siblings kept texting each other, the one time I glanced back at my phone I saw some weird emoji's, I wasn't gonna get involved in that.
I settled down on my bed, curling into a small ball. I thought about how I had to lie to my siblings. Telling them all those years training was actually Marine Biology college courses. When I had to leave, I told them I was going on a business trip. A trip I might stay on forever, and only visit on Christmas break. I told them was studying turtles, even though I'd rather study birds or wild flowers.
I closed my eyes, quickly slipping into a dreamless sleep.
