CHAPTER 10: The internal turmoil

The ball room erupted in chaos. The ministers and nobel men yelled at king Christopher stating that the answer was obviously Alexander. Was he a fool, everyone questioned. Royal highnesses whispered into each other's ears about the rumors they had heard. Through all that horror, the king of Corolia remained smiling at the royal family who had disbelief written all over their faces. Classandra's worst fear had come true. Never once in her life had she imagined a moment like this. At this exact moment, Clare wished her father was with her, and yet, glad he wasn't since she would've only caused him more pain. What was she to do now? Everything was collapsing around her and her mind was still screaming at her to hold onto whatever remains. She very well knew that she had lost the battle but her mind refused to accept it. Her mind generated beautiful visuals of horrific outcomes if she spoke out the truth. Oh how badly she wanted to lock herself in a room and never come out. If this was the turning point in her life, she didn't want it. She was happy to be who she was right then.

Alexander was still breathing. That was the only thing that kept himself from combusting. Somehow, he had always expected this day to come, but never this soon. He always knew that the things that don't belong won't last long, and here it was, the legacy he promised to uphold, almost on the verge of ruin. Will he speak out the truth? He witnessed an internal battle against the word to his father and his mental ease. The guilt that was always eating him up from inside could finally vanish. He wouldn't have to always try to make it up to his sister. He could be free! But Clare? Poor Clare. He wondered what would happen if he spoke out. Will she be sane? He remembered her face from just an hour ago, when she realized this was about to happen. Will she be the same way if it continued to be her life? At that point, Alexander made up his mind that no matter what happens, he will always stand by his sister.

The queen mother was raging with fury at everyone who was a part of this. She always warned her husband, the late king, to never mess with the flow of things. All these years, she had lived with the fear of exposure. What was she thinking!? She should've never accepted this in the first place. A little act of rebellion has now led to a great disaster. But past is past, she convinced herself. Regretting it now won't help anyone. No matter how much she was against her daughter for this, she obliged to it, so now she had to accept the consequences. She'll have to do anything in her power to stop the outburst of war, of which she was certain would happen, considering the image the citizens had of her daughter.

The royal family remained silent with the ever growing chaos. The citizens screamed at them to tell the fool who the first born was and put him back in place, but they too quietened when the royal family held their mouth shut. With all their own internal battle, no one wanted to speak out the truth. Alex didn't want to rant out his sister and neither did Elizabeth, her daughter. Clare was frozen in place. The ballroom came to a stand still; complete pin drop silence.

"Well..., we are waiting, your majesties," king Christopher said with no strain on his vocal chords. His voice flew through the air and pierced the ears like an arrow aimed to kill.

Classandra had enough. She couldn't handle the silence anymore. She was responsible for this mess, so she would take responsibility for it. Besides, no one can be entirely sure that it would lead to disaster. Maybe, people would act like, "oh, is that so. Anyways, what's for dessert!" She knew it was quite impossible, but she had to try.

"Me," Clare said. The king and the queen mother turned their heads towards her in shock. Alex couldn't believe it. She did it. She actually did it.

"Excuse me princess, but did you say something? We couldn't hear you properly."

Classandra knew very well that whatever she said was audible. King Christopher just wanted to drive her confession deeper, especially since there seemed to be no commotion within the citizens. Everyone was dumbstruck.

"I'm the first born of the late king Philip and the queen mother Elizabeth!" Clare said proudly. The truth was out. There was no turning back now.
