TRIVIA DOWN BELOW!!!
I groan as I rest my head on the cool table top. The sounds of bustling students and the cafeteria ladies screaming each other disturbing my rest. Logan's thumb runs over my knuckles, something that honestly should be driving me crazy but for some reason wasn't doing so today.
"Why so rude?" Zoe laughs at my sour expression. Because I'm tired of having to pretend to have a boyfriend even though I don't I whine to myself, but of course I couldn't tell her so I just shrug and try not to notice my leg brushing against Logan's.
"Tired." I say
"Yeah, me too." Logan adds as support.
"Woah...did you guys like having a tiring make out experience or-" I slam my hand over her mouth and she giggles.
As I withdraw my hand from Zoe's mouth and resume using it as a makeshift pillow I hear a loud PHWOOSH and instantly straighten myself up, my eyes catching onto an envelope that has flown all the way from the popular table and is now sliding it's way across our table.
A couple of kids turn to look and instantly a whisper starts up. A gift (if you could call it that) from the popular group was quite a big deal and it either meant you were in trouble or you were to skyrocket to fame. So whatever they were going to witness, my classmates knew that it was going to be good.
Gingerly, I pick up the envelope and open it. There's a name printed on the sheets on the flap in big boyish letters.
MAX
Huh, how did it get to me? I stand up and gingerly make my way over to his table. I feel strangely confident as I step over to Max and thrust the envelope at him instead.
"You would've thought that a group composed of so many jocks would have better aim than this, huh?" I shrug.
"What?" Max looks confused and Samson turns to stare at me more weirdly than he usually does.
"Your envelope, it's addressed to you. It flew all the way to our table over there." I gesture a vague hand to the table we were sitting at and hear the girls at the popular table sigh at the sight of Logan. I roll my eyes.
"Oh. I was just...um...gesturing with it and it flew out of my hands. Sorry for that." He looks awkward and a tinge of red coats his cheeks. Cute. Samson punches his shoulder and laughs.
"No, it's fine." I assure him.
"..."
"..."
"Um... I've got to go now so..." I start backing away from the table.
"Wait. Clara, I've got to talk to you about something. Could we go..." Max gets off the bench and gives a small smile, cocking a thumb towards the cafeteria doors.
"Sure." I follow him as he walks to the doors and opens them up for me. I slide through. My phone vibrates in my pocket and I startle, sliding it out and checking the incoming text quickly.
I fire off a response.
I slip my phone back into my pocket and turn to face Max.
"So what is it?" I fiddle with the straps of my navy blue cami top, avoiding Max's eyes. I have a feeling that whatever it is he wanted to talk to me about...it wasn't going to be good.
"Friday's off isn't it?" He says in a tone of defeat.
"Friday?" I'm genuinely confused and my voice must show it because Max sighs as he opens his mouth to speak.
"We had a date...planned for Friday." He shrugs and darts his eyes away from my face momentarily before turning back again, stuffing his hands into the pockets of his jeans.
"Oh. I..." I screw up my mouth and shift from one foot to the other
"You're with Logan now so..." He offers as an explanation
"I-"
"I don't believe it." He cuts in as his eyes scrutinize me. I'm scared I have a guilty expression on my face so I wipe it clean of any expression and try my hardest to give him a blank stare back.
"Why don't you believe that Logan and I are together?" I ask, gingerly.
" I don't know much about you but I do know that you would never get with anyone like him." His tone masks a whole layer of disgust as I listen to him speak.
"Really?" He was right though, I've been avoiding pain for all this time and keeping myself safe...Logan was a risky gamble.
"Yes. And I know it has nothing to do with me but I'd rather tell you first. I don't want you to get your heart broken afterwards, Clara."
"I can handle myself, Max." I turn to leave, pulse thudding so hard I can hear it and my heart feeling like it was being tugged in two directions. On one hand here was Max, and up until I met Logan I would've thought he'd be the one.
"Hey." Max says gently.
I stop and sigh, turning back around to look at him.
"I'm always here." He spreads his arms wide "if you need me."
"Thank you." I smile a little and make off for my table in the cafeteria. I hear whispers as I sit down and Logan quirks a brow at me.
"What?" I grumble, already back to my foul mood.
"Nothing." Logan turns away. I can rely on Max not to share his suspicions with Zoe, right? Slipping my phone out I start playing Candy Crush as Logan peers over my shoulder and laughs.
"Candy Crush?" He plucks the phone from my hands.
"Hey!" I try to take it back but he holds it up high. I sink back into my seat and watch as he starts playing. The whole table is confused with our antics and I hear Zoe laughing at us. The other people who share the table, a pair of twins with dark hair and mocha skin turn and look at us.
"Candy Crush," Zoe explains and they nod and giggle at each other.
Logan hands me back my phone and I gasp. He's beaten my high score! I push him, violently and he laughs at me, pushing me back.
"FIGHT!" Yells a stocky boy comically from several tables away.
I mockingly put my hands up in a fighters stance and punch him. Logan clutches his chest in fake pain and punches me back, albeit softly. Eventually after several rounds filled with oohs and ahhhs from the audience around us we stop and I lie my head on the table, laughing.
"You guys are totally in love." One of the twins remarks, nudging her sister who in turn smiles at us.
"Oh no we - " I open my mouth to say no but...
"Are very much in like." Logan finishes for me. The twins nod their heads in unconvincing acceptance and I smile genuinely at Logan.
"You really aren't a bad boy are you?" I whisper in his ear.
He smiles in response "Perhaps not, but bad boy sounds much more interesting than Logan, doesn't it?"
