46: My real name is

What should I do?

How can I heal him?

How can I help him?

How do I keep him alive?

I cupped Saint's cheeks and watched him take labored breaths that pressed heaviness against my chest. Soft wheezes sounded from his breathing and the sound of the river flowing somehow expressed the tender coiling of my heart. I swallowed the growing ache in my throat from not knowing how I can alleviate his pain.

"Saint..." I murmured.

The only part of his body that was considered spared from the severe burns was the other half of his face. The rest of his body was already charred and was  beyond my knowledge of saving.

Saint opened the only eye he had left and looked at me weakly.

"I...I'm sorry," he croaked out.

"Lucian...many more of them..." Skwak informed me. "Skwak will hold them off. Lucian escape."

The ache in my throat swelled up even further and Skwak helped me carry Saint on my back. I looked at Skwak and held him in a firm gaze.

"Be safe and come back to me," I told him.

Skwak nodded. "Skwak will come back. Skwak will follow wherever Lucian is. Skwak will protect Lucian."

"No, don't die on my sake. I don't deserve your sacrifice," I mildly reprimanded him.

I turned around and gave Skwak one last glance. "I will be waiting for you."

I jumped across the river and secured Saint against me. I kept glancing back at Skwak as he watched us. With one last look, Skwak vanished and a loud explosion occurred.

"Tha...thank you..." Saint coughed out.

"I am amazed how he can still talk despite his serious burn injury..." the voice inside my head commented.

"He shouldn't even be able to speak at all..."  another one spoke.

"One d-day...I will ca-carry you l-like this...one day...wherever you-you wa-want to go...I-I will carry you..."

My eyes began to sheathe with a thin layer of something wet and I cleared my throat. "Yes, one day, so please, do not let go. Do not let go. Do not leave me," I pleaded him.

I am tired of having people leave me. I am tired of having people turn their backs on me.

"Aishiteiru (I love you)" Lucius' voice slid inside the unstable commotion going on inside my head.

"M-My name...My re-real name...I ha-haven't told yo-you yet..." he stammered.

I swallowed the swelling in my throat and clenched my jaw tightly. I stood still and listened to him intently.

"What's your real name Saint?" I softly asked him. My voice sounded thick. It sounded like it was about to break down into shattering fragments but I kept it whole.

"Saint?" I called out. Saint became heavier and my feet stumbled back.

"Nephew..."  the voice inside my head murmured sadly.

"Do not ignore me. It is rude not to respond..." I muttered.

"He's gone nephew."

"He is not..." I resisted.

There was no way. I was going to bring Saint out of this village. I was going to protect him. I wasn't going to let anyone harm him ever again.

"He's gone, please darling—"

"He is not!" I raised my voice that caused my body a strong tremble. "I told him not to let go. I told him that."

"I know sweetheart. But you cannot save everyone, that is the reality of life," the voice gently said.

This was unjust.

This was cruel.

This was...the world we were living in.

"How can he be gone when...he hasn't even lived yet?"

I stared far away with a wave of sharpness stinging my chest. My face continuously twitched uncontrollably.

"You have to let go nephew for Saint has..."

I bit my bottom lip and lowered my head.

"I will not..."

Let him rest here.

My feet started to move slowly into a walk and eventually it became a jog and transformed into a fast run.

I will not have his body rest in a place where he was tormented.

A loud howl emerged that halted me in place before a huge wolf came into my vision, running to me in high speed of urgency. Fenris transformed into Caleb as soon as my legs gave out. Worry and fear were etched on Caleb's expression and I looked at him as I released huffs of heavy breaths that were squeezing my chest.

"Lucian?" he called out and knelt before me. "What happened? I was looking all over for you. Who is that?" he asked.

"Someone...who I couldn't save," I whispered. "Someone who I failed."

Caleb bit his lip and pressed my head against his bare chest. His presence was able to stabilize me somehow.

"I didn't even get to know his real name."

"It's not your fault..." he comforted.

We stayed still for awhile until more explosions were heard.

"I don't know what's going on but we can't stay here," Caleb said and stood me up. "Let me carry him for you," he offered.

I swayed my head. "Let me do it. He would have wanted that."

Caleb cupped my face and nodded in understanding.

"Go back," Kox's voice popped in behind us.

Caleb jolted and twirled on his heels before pointing at Kox in confusion.

"Where the fuck have you been? Where are Crowley and Ziru?" He went from a caring and sympathizing werewolf into an annoyed and reprimanding man in a second.

"They're at the opposite of where you're going," Kox answered blankly as he read the empty pages like he normally did.

"The trinity must all meet. It's the only way to save everyone."

Caleb exhaled another frustrated breath. "Can someone tell me what exactly is happening?"

Kox pointed at the skies and we found a figure falling.

"That is exactly what is happening."

The tiny dot became more vivid as it fell and the gigantic monster we saw earlier landed on the ground near us causing a massive earthquake that split the floor far and beyond. I used more of my mana and took us above the ground and witnessed the cracks and the crumbling of the forest. A three-tailed man engaged into a fight against the giant and the characteristics of his tails gave away his identity.

It appeared that the maniac had finally arrived.

Skwak soared with us and Caleb was ready to strike him.

"He is a friend," I explained to him which only further irked the puzzled werewolf.

"Lucian what kind of friends are you making?!"

"That is Squawkey-san. I followed him when you were sleeping."

Caleb slapped his forehead in exasperation and pointed at the giant sending thunders and lightning to Sin's way.

"And them? Are they your friends too?" Caleb asked.

"Not quite."

"Not quite?" he emphasized.

"I am hesitant to make friends with the three-tailed maniac," I deadpanned.

Cloaked skeletons rose with their scythes and began to attack us. I heard Skwak huff and his whole body was engulfed in fire.

"Don't tell me they're your friends too!" Caleb snarled before bringing out his claws.

"I'm considering it," I sighed.

"Leave Lucian alone!" Skwak snarled.

My eyes widened when Saint was snatched from my hold by none other than the mutated Vincenzo who had leaped and landed firmly on the ground.

My form scorched in an unexplained sensation as he held Saint's corpse roughly. My fists clenched tightly as they shook vehemently. Caleb had noticed my behavior and snarled at Vincenzo.

"Give that boy back if you know what's good for you," he threatened him.

Vincenzo growled in a beastly way with blood splattering out of his mouth that stretched even further and torn the corners of his lips.

"The Trinity must never be one!" Vincenzo growled.

"Your limbs must never be attached to you..." I murmured darkly.

My fingers uncurled but maintained their tremor. Their tips had a discolored tint to them as ashen colored veins began to spread through my skin.

"Lucian?" Caleb called out worriedly. My ears had blocked every sound from my environment as I shut my eyes and began to hear my heart beating.

"What is causing you that pain?"

A velvety voice of a man that brought so much familiarity to me muttered closely to my ears.

"What is causing you that extreme rage?" he asked and colds winds circled my body before they began to prick my skin in their blazing rage.

"What is drowning you into the depths of despair again?"

Vibrant scarlet piercing eyes glanced at me behind my closed lids and I sensed my hands getting grasped by colder ones.

"I will destroy them for you."

"Lucian!" Caleb's voice echoed through the isolation I was in and my consciousness got through the line of numbness.

My body was surrounded by a cyclone of fire accompanied by snapped trees and boulders.

"I will destroy the world for you," he spoke through me and moved my own arm.

I feel as if I was a puppet to this conquering voice. He was seeing through me. He was moving through me. He was living through me.

The flames widened in its range and my eyes snapped to where Vincenzo was. He was retreating with Saint's corpse.

My body dove and I charged in pursuit. The flaming inside of my body continued to grow and I heard Caleb shouting at me. We grew closer to where the giant and Sin were squabbling in and I endlessly threw flames at Vincenzo who was able to dodge some but received most.

He tossed Saint to the side and turned around. I caught his fist before it could touch my face and without even thinking I let the person controlling me release the next move. His slimy tongue wrapped around my neck and my arms transformed into blades which severed the muscle. The blade slashed through his stomach and the lesion gaped wide open. Huge spiders crawled out of the wound that kept on latching to my form to mangle me with their jarred teeth. I jumped back and my body released a heat wave that caused the spiders to fall off and melt to the ground.

Vincenzo lanced his staff to the ground and a magic circle spread under his feet.

"No God is better than thee.

May the previous ruler be damned.

May the still believers be scorned.

Humanity shall rise again."

Vincenzo grew in size and became even bulkier than he ever was. He charged towards me with an intent to annihilate and one of his hands clawed my neck into its palm. My sword pierced through his chest and I breathed through my teeth before spitting acid into his face. The old man dropped me with a growl and I withdrew my blade and cut one of his arms which then regrew in a fast state.

"Pest," he spoke through me again.  I breathed in through my teeth again and instead of spitting acid, heat swelled up against my throat and I splattered lava against his chest.

Vincenzo howled in agony and I leaped with my arm blade swinging and tearing his head from his torso.

"Must die,"  the voice continued and controlled my arm blade to stab the neck. "And become rotten."

Decay suddenly infested the beheaded body and I was taken aback as my eyes widened.

Did I cause him to rot?

My vision blackened for a second and I stumbled back before I felt arms encircle me.

"What were those things I killed off?" Caleb panted out and held me up.

"Fuck..." Caleb muttered when he noticed the decayed form. "It looks like some catastrophe got him."

Caleb yanked me from the ground when Vincenzo's body started to flail his arms as if it was looking for something.

"What the fuck?" Caleb screamed when the head crawled up to its place and released a broken groan.

I clapped my hands and the ground underneath Vincenzo was parted. His recuperating body fell inside and I slammed the ground shut.

"I'm going to get nightmares after this. I'm never going to sleep," Caleb sighed. I stayed silent and tried to rethink what happened earlier.

Why did Vincenzo's body decay like that?

Caleb gathered Saint and handed him to me.

"Are you okay Lucian? You suddenly became berserk. What's going on?"

I took Saint from him and licked my lips.

"I don't know. It is hard to explain. Perhaps Lucius will know what is happening to me."

Caleb and I glanced below when we heard an earthly sound and before I know it, a hand shot out and yanked me below. Caleb moved Saint away and pulled me with all his might, the veins in his arms popping out as the one pulled me had equal strength.

"Shit! Don't let go!"

The tight grip moved from my ankle to my lower leg before I heard my bone snap. My breath hitched and I swallowed a scream from the painful sensation.

I felt that.

And I was still feeling it.

"Cal-Caleb. I...he broke my bone."

Caleb's eyes became wide as saucers and anger pushed him over the edge. His eyes grew red and his strength doubled. The werewolf was able to win the tag of war with my leg being the only casualty, and was able to pull Vincenzo with me who didn't even gain a single scratch from being mashed underneath. Caleb grabbed the wrist of the arm holding me captive, before snapping it into two. He grabbed Saint and jumped back before setting us gently down the floor.

The werewolf took long and fast strides towards Vincenzo who was anticipating him with a bloodied grin. Caleb gave him a strike to the face that sent him crashing through two or more trees.

"How fucking dare you..." he seethed towards him. "How fucking dare you hurt my mate!"

As if Caleb magnetize the lightning that the giant was giving Sin, electricity surged towards the werewolf and I realized what he was trying to do.

Caleb's body bulked up and the ground underneath his feet broke apart.

"No...don't do it...Caleb!" I yelled.

Caleb bellowed in anger and disappeared in a flash of light, leaving charged particles from where he left. Before Vincenzo can stand, he was plucked from his place and was taken far away.

My chest tightened from extreme concern for the werewolf's safety and I tried to stand only to fall forward when my broken bone couldn't support my rise. A thunderous ignition burst and winds and dust rolled from the point of explosion. I covered my eyes and pulled Saint against me not knowing that I would lose consciousness after the winds settled down.

The feeling in my chest was too much to bear.

I didn't know how to handle it.

It was all...too confusing.

My eyes opened to the bright and clear sky and I heard a soft humming from the person cradling my head on his lap. He was looking at the sky before his red eyes warmly glanced at me.

"Saint..."

Saint smiled at me and tears rolled down his cheeks before he started to sing in his beautiful boyish voice.

"My faith is as clear as the sky.

It is as bright as this very day.

And nothing could have trampled my faith

Yet you arrived and swept me away."

"How you've left me in disarray

How you've kept me as your prey.

And now I am caged in your eyes.

Yet I feel my wings stretch in your gaze."

"Tell me something I don't know.

Tell me how you can get rid of this faith of mine.

That damned faith that kept me alive.

That certain faith that is now long gone."

"Where is my devotion now? Is it with you?

Where do I stand now if not by your side?

My traitorous heart is bursting out of my chest.

It is reaching for you. It is longing for you."

"Tell me something I already know.

I say no but my heart says yes.

I know I can't reject you because you accepted me.

When no one did, no one really did, and no one ever did."

"I love you; when will I ever shout it out?

I am coward, yes I am afraid.

I was once a faithful man.

And now I don't know what I am. "

"Yet I believe in you. You are my new sky.

You are my new sun. My heart is pointing at you.

I am a believer of you. Will you accept me one day?

I wonder, I wish, and I pray that I can stay by you."

"I will stand by you. I will look at you.

I will adore you. I will embrace you.

If my life runs out before I can praise you, then I promise

I will love you in another lifetime."

"I will love you in another lifetime. I surely will.

My mind may forget you but my heart will never will.

I will love you in another lifetime. Do not forget.

I will love you in another lifetime. Just you wait."

I reached up and caressed Saint's face. He leaned against my touch and I rubbed his cheek with my thumb.

"I will wait for you...Saint."

Saint held my hand that was on his face and shut his eyes.

"I haven't told you my real name yet."

"You can tell me when we meet again," I whispered.

"I want to tell you now," he persisted. "Because I know that you're the only person who will not treat it as a curse.

My eyes started to blink from sleepiness and Saint's voice started to fade.

"Then...tell me."

Saint's mouth continued to move but I couldn't hear anything.

"I can't hear you. Will you speak loudly for me?"

Saint smiled and my vision fluctuated. He gently swiped my eyes closed and I awakened with a blue feather swaying in its descent. The feather fell on my eyes and I heard Crowley and the others heading my way. They surrounded my body and I looked to my side where Saint was lying down peacefully.

"I still...don't know your name," I murmured.

Rui tapped my arm and contemplated something before saying it.

"Before he died he told me something," Rui said.

"What was it?"

Rui lowered his gaze and then looked at Saint with sympathy.

"Please tell him...that my real name is    S a m a e l."
