Files
It had been over three hours since Somin and the Red Lotus began going through her father's files in the hopes of finding something that could explain why he was assassinated. Most of the files she had read were just accounts of business transactions and underground dealings,
I'll give my father credit, the man was organized.
She went to open another drawer in his desk only to find it wouldn't budge. Her eyebrows snapped together in confusion as she addressed the six males in the room,
"Have any of you found a key?"
They shook their heads as Suho spoke,
"I don't think so. Why?"
"Because my father has a locked drawer in his desk."
"Break it open."
Kai responded as if it was obvious. Somin smirked,
"If this desk belonged to anyone else on the planet I would. My father locked it up because he had something to hide. He would've taken precautions so that even if it was opened by force, whatever he has inside would be destroyed. He was a paranoid man. He even went as far as to create the fake name of Avery Tyler for me if we ever had to flee the country. If we want to get in here and not destroy whatever is inside, then we need the key."
Somin leaned back in her chair as she thought out loud,
"The key would be somewhere plain. It's location wouldn't stand out in any way. It would be somewhere that wouldn't raise suspicion, but at the same time wouldn't be easy to find. He wouldn't have had it on his person in case anything were to happen. No, it's be somewhere only he'd know. But where?"
Somin questioned rhetorically, the gears in her mind turning as she thought of where he would've hidden the key. Baekhyun was the next to speak,
"Why don't we just pick the lock?"
Somin's eyes snapped over to him before she explained,
"My father was extremely paranoid as I've said, and it only grew worse the older he got. There's a very good chance that if we try and pick that lock it will trigger whatever he rigged up inside the drawer. Whatever's inside will be lost. I'd rather find the key and not take the risk."
Baekhyun nodded before speaking again,
"Was there something your father liked? That might help us find the key."
Avery pondered the question,
"He did love to collect art. We might find something in his room."
She turned to Suho,
"I want you to choose two of your men to stay here with you and keep going through the files. The other three will come with me to my father's room."
Suho looked at his men,
"Sehun and D.O. will stay with me. Kai, Baekhyun, and Chanyeol will go with you."
Somin motioned for them to follow her as she left her father's office, heading down the hall to the master bedroom,
"Do you think it'll be behind a bunch of complicated puzzles or something?"
Baekhyun questioned. Somin laughed,
"I don't think so, no. My father was paranoid, but he liked having quick access to things if he ever needed to make a daring escape. If this key was as important as I think it is then he would've had it somewhere that wouldn't arouse suspicion, but wouldn't be so complicated he couldn't access it at a moments notice."
Her response was light hearted as they came up on the large mahogany door to her father's room. Somin gripped the doorknob and twisted it, pushing the door open slowly. She walked in and observed the room. His bed was pushed up against the wall on the far right, as far from the window on the opposite wall as possible. He had a walk in closet a few feet away from his bed and a modest memorial shrine to his wife on the opposite side up against the wall. There was a small sitting area with two chairs and a black coffee table. As Somin looked around she noticed one major thing, that being there were no photographs of anyone in the room, nor were there any real personal touches. His room, although pleasantly decorated and aesthetically pleasing, was very sterile and plain. The furniture was sparse, down to almost necessities only. Even the memorial to his wife was kept closed. She turned to the other three in the room and spoke,
"Search the room. Don't make a mess but be thorough. I'd bet it's in here somewhere."
They nodded in understanding as the four of them dispersed throughout the room. Somin went to her father's nightstand and began searching while the others went somewhere else in the room,
"Did your father have a key ring or something?"
Chanyeol asked sarcastically. Somin laughed,
"He did, yes, however it won't be much use considering the only keys on it were our house key and his car key."
Chanyeol sighed in irritation which only made Somin laugh harder,
"My father was clever. A key ring is too obvious."
Chanyeol shrugged,
"Fair point. I'll admit, I don't know much about your father. Only Suho really knew anything about him on a professional level. Do you know what made him so paranoid?"
Somin gently shut the nightstand drawer and turned to face Chanyeol. When she spoke her voice was soft,
"It was the death of my mother 17 years ago. He's been paranoid ever since. That's why I find it hard to believe that she died from a normal car accident."
Chanyeol nodded in understanding,
"Sounds like your family has been through a lot."
"You could say that."
Somin responded thoughtfully. In truth, she never gave it much thought. She had always known her father to be paranoid, and she lost her mother so young that she couldn't remember her. Chanyeol approaches her slowly and spoke, interrupting her thoughts,
"I lost my parents at a young age. I understand what it's like. Don't blame yourself if you don't remember."
His tone was quiet as he regarded her with sympathetic eyes, a rarity among gang members. Somin blinked in surprise before responding,
"I... I won't. I know her death isn't my fault, neither is his. Thank you, though. Not many would take the time to say that."
Chanyeol smiles lightly,
"I think you'll find most of us, at least in the Red Lotus, aren't what we appear."
Somin smirked,
"Is anyone?"
Before he could respond Baekhyun popped his head out of the walk in closet,
"Hey Somin, was your dad a cross dresser by any chance?"
Somin laughed in surprise,
"What?"
Baekhyun held up a pair of red Prada pumps,
"I'm not judging, just asking. These shoes don't seem like his size."
Somin walked over and took the Prada pumps from Baekhyun,
"These aren't his, no. My father is a size 9 in men and these are a size 4 in women's. I wear size 5. He didn't have a woman in his life other than my mother. They must be hers."
Somin examined them before handing them back to Baekhyun,
"Where'd you find them?"
"In the closet. Your father kept these but I didn't see any other pieces of clothing belonging to your mother other than her wedding dress."
Somin tilted her head in thought,
"Strange. I thought he would've kept more."
Somin didn't have much time to think about it before Jungkook ran into the room,
"Somin! We spoke with Police Chief Jinki. He gave us the file on your mother and the car accident."
Somin walked swiftly to him,
"Do you have the file with you?"
He nodded and handed it to her,
"Your suspicions were correct. I'm sorry."
He said softly to the young woman in front of him. Somin sent him a questioning look before reading the report on her mother's death. The more she read, the wider her eyes became. Kai, Chanyeol, and Baekhyun had gathered around Somin and Jungkook to figure out what was happening. When Somin finished reading she looked up, eyes stoic as she spoke,
"I was right. My mother was murdered."
"So what does this mean?"
Kai asked, though he already knew the answer. Somin turned to him,
"It means whoever killed her killed my father. And... whoever killed my father will try to kill me."
