03 A Fair Warning

All she said was meet here at the park tomorrow with no specified time or location at the park, just tomorrow. So there I was right by the music fountain sitting under the baking sun and waiting, and waiting...then sometime during the middle of the day, I sensed someone approaching me. When I looked up, there she was there. Appearing in front of me like a ghost. Mi was wearing the same clothing from yesterday, though obviously it was fresh.

"Hey. You're here." That's all I could say, and threw my best effort smile in at the same time, which probably looked like a combination between an excited puppy smile and a zombie grin.

All I got for the smile was a blank stare, which is probably a good thing...Anyways, a moment passed then two, and after a long bridge of silence she finally spoke for the first time, in like forever:

"There are some things I need to tell you."

Great. I thought.

"Alright, I am all ears."

"Follow me." she began to turn and leave.

"Can't we talk hear?"

She turned and looked back at me, and without even reading her mind, the message written on her facial expression was as clear:

You don't have a choice.

With no way around, plus I am kind of curious where she is taking things now. I didn't see any point in disagreeing with her. So I willingly followed her, leading me up to a parking lot. And sitting right in the middle of the parking lot was this top class black Bentley that must have worth like a bajillion or something. Then out from the driver side came a big burly man in formal serving attire who hurried and opened the passenger door. I watched as Mi climbed in the car and she motioned me too follow. Reluctantly I climbed into the back with her.

After the driver got back into his seat and started hitting the road, I turned to Mi and asked:

"So...where are we going?"

"My house."

"Oh."

A thousand questions wrapped around my brain, but one look from Mi made me decided to keep my mouth shut. The rest of the entire trip continued on in silence.

***

"Holy..." the next word didn't come out of my mouth, because of the warning look I got from the hulk-like servant standing by the doorway. Mi's house was this impressive gigantic mansion, or castle, because I really couldn't tell the difference. It was just so large I couldn't see the other end from here, and up close I realized her house stood at least 5 stories tall.

Without saying a single word I followed her into the house and through a series of hallways. And if it wasn't for Mi guiding me I felt like I would need a GPS just to find my way out of the place, after walking straight for several minutes, we came out through a door, into what appeared to be the garden. It was as complex as the labyrinth itself. The garden was just beautiful; I felt as if I was walking through the Garden of Eden. I was afraid though, at this point if I didn't catch up with Mi I would be lost and trapped in here forever. We traveled deeper into the green labyrinth. The journey took a couple minutes or so, maybe hours. I couldn't really tell the difference of time at this point, I might as well say it took about forever. Mi finally stopped and seated herself at a white marble table that was dwarfed by a beautiful white marble fountain right beside it spewing water with an elegancy one can never imagine.

"Have a seat." That was all she said. Seeing no other alternative options, I obeyed and sat down.

"So...what is it you wanted to tell me, that made you drag both of us all the way from the park to here?" I raised an eyebrow.

"Two cups of red tea if you please," she turned and said to the servant who hurried away, then she turned back towards me and replied:

"You don't seem to understand."

"I don't, so tell me."

She folded her hands together and straightened her back; all at once I felt the mood turned from all peaceful to completely serious, judging from what she was about to say:

"You are in danger and you are also a danger."

"I don't know what you are talking about," I said searching her facial expression for clues and avoided using my mind reading ability as much as possible. My train of thought was broken as two steaming cups of tea arrived and placed on the table by the servant. Mi stirred her cup with the petit silver spoon on the side for a while. She lifted her cup taking a tiny sip before setting it down again. I have to admit I am not a big fan of tea, so copying what Mi had done, I stirred my red tea. Though not with the same level of professionalism as she had displayed. I lifted my cup and took a quick sip. The taste was excellent, even as a person who almost never drank tea, I could just tell this tea was the top of the top class. After setting it down carefully I held Mi's gaze and waited for her to speak. Thinking she'd gone mute I decided to reopen my mouth and speak again. Just before I did so she cut me off:

"It's very simple. Your escape yesterday was no coincidence. Others wanted to know why and now they are curious."

"Others? Who are the others?"

Silence, dead silence. Thinking she'd went mute again I decided to change the topic. Before I could say anything she cut me off:

"Others, they are just like you and me. Worst, they are already after you."

"Wow." was all I could think of.

"Revealing one's identity is dangerous enough, but revealing another's ability is a whole different story." She then closed her eyes and tilted then carefully tasted its content.

"Is that why you tried to kill me in some abandoned warehouse?"

"I originally planned your death to be swift and quiet, but your ability proved to be a nuisance after all."

"Nuisance? If I never had that ability I wouldn't be here at all!"

As soon as I said those words, Mi's expression shone with sorrow for the briefest moment. I managed to capture it and will remember it as long as I live. It was the first expression I had ever seen come from her that wasn't the usual poker face. It was an actual expression of sadness.

"Did I say something wrong?" I quickly tried to comfort her, knowing it will probably not be any of use.

"Nothing." She looked at me again, her expression was back to the usual Mona Lisa poker face. The intangible poker face that will always have you guessing, but never knowing the truth. Like the multiple choice question on your English exam, they all look the same to me to be honest.

"So...I know you can't talk about the others, but can you tell me about your abilities at least?"

She paused for a long moment before speaking again:

"You can just use your ability and you will find the answer, and there is nothing I can do about it."

"Still..." I paused thinking of the right thing to say. "I want to hear it in person, I want to hear it from you."

"Does it matter?"

"Yes, yes it does."

Like this we stared at each other for a long time, after what seemed like eternity, she lifted her cup, not touching her lips, she spoke:

"I can see the future, like you said previously in the train station, but..." she paused, finishing the remains of her tea then set down the cup and continued, "it's more complicated than that."

"I am listening."

"I can see the future, every changing and adapting to the present."

"What do you mean by shifting and adapting to the present?"

"The future I see floats like a tapestry on top of the present, almost like a hologram, except it shifts all the time, but the general outcomes are close to absolute. Just the simple act of walking can lead to a thousand different outcomes, and I am able to weed out the most likely outcome that is about to happen in the next few seconds."

"That's so op, but that also leads me to a question," I cleared my throat then said, "Back there you mentioned the future. If you can see a thousand outcomes from just simply walking, does that mean you also know what I am going so say, when I am only thinking about it? And if I suddenly changing my mind and decide not to speak in the end, would you still have the impression of knowing what I am about to say?"

This time she gone silent for a long time, then out from the gloom she replied:

"When the sentence you're are about to say is within a couple seconds, I will know what you are going to say, but if anything changes your mind then, then what I would see is the future that has been changed."

"So you are like the oracle or something, and just how far can you see exactly?"

"Not quite, I have visions. Blurry vision of things, days or weeks ahead, the further the time, the more blurry it is. The most I ever got to was a month, and doing so required immense silence and concentration."

My mind is just totally blown away, but I had about a couple thousand more questions to go:

"So...were you born with your powers?"

"Yes." She said without hesitation.

"Me too." I sighed. "Others don't understand, after a while those cool powers kind of suck, right?"

There was no word that needs to be exchanged, there is just this sense of familiar pain that we resonated and reflected so well between us. It was the pain of never being able to be just ordinary and that life for us will always be different. And being different can sometimes be very hard...I didn't go there, there were, unpleasant, memories waiting for me, there was the pain my ability brought to me all these years. there was a place I didn't want to go.

"The day is dying, I suggest you best hide and prepare yourself of what is to come."

The sky is now a massacre of red, and the way how Mi said it made is sound kind of terrifying, but I guess it was fair enough warning.

"The sun always rises again and again, does it not?" I chuckled.

"...that is all the advice I can give you." She said at last, and just as I was going to get up and get her to lead me out of the maze again, she looked me in the eye one last time and said:

"Till we meet again, good luck."
