Urban fantasy is a genre of literature that can be written as novels, novellas, and short stories in which fantasy characters and concepts take place in real-world urban settings. In other words, urban fantasy is a type of fantasy where the story takes place in an urban area. Examples of an urban area can be a city or a town.

What is worldbuilding?

Worldbuilding is the writing process that basically sets up where your story takes place. In other words, you will be building your own world into your story. So, when it comes to worldbuilding for your urban fantasy story, think about a fantasy story with supernatural elements where your character or characters are in some type of city, town, or urban area. As you build your world, you should make sure that you give your readers a sense of the landscape as to which your characters will live as well as the tone of your story and themes. When it comes to worldbuilding, you need to make sure that it lays the foundation for your character or characters to develop.

What is the main purpose of worldbuilding?

The main purpose for worldbuilding is so it can give your story some structure and an actual real place to live. This way you can include your imagination while also having a real-world setting. It allows you to be as creative as you want while also making your writing better. Some examples could be, Game of Thrones, Star Wars, and Harry Potter.

How to build an Urban Fantasy World?

Below are some things to think about when thinking about how you want to build your Urban Fantasy World:

1. Where do you want your story to start?

When answering this question, you want to pick the world that you're most excited about or a world that you find interesting and start from there.

2. List some rules and laws.

The character or characters in your world, will they live with others like them? Or other types of creatures or people? Do you want your story to include magic? Do they have special powers? Is there some type of ruler or leader in your world that everyone else has to follow?

When figuring out what you want in your world, you can help make it function like a real one.

3. Choose a place.

Do you want it to be in Space? On Earth? Another type of planet?

This can help set the mood or tone for your story.

4. Think about the type of environment that you want.

Is there good weather? Bad weather? What will there be trees? Natural resources? How will your characters live on this land?

5. Will it have a culture?

Do they have a religion? Do they believe in a higher being? Do they have rituals? Celebrations?)

6. A special language that they all speak?

Think about how your character or characters will communicate? Can they communicate with others outside of their world too? Is there a forbidden language?

7. Will they have a long historical background?

Do they have enemies or rivals? Is there going to be war? Do they have a long line of Kings and Queens?

It's good to have a backstory for your world. It helps it become more real.
