Cᴏʟᴇᴛᴛᴇ Bʀɪɴᴋ's POV

I'M A SECOND AWAY FROM THROTTLING ANDRE.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀His dumbass sent Emma into the Woods, which is the Sage Grove Center, a psychiatric hospital that moonlights as an experimental place for doctors to test things on Supes.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀I look over at him, my eyes narrowed. I definitely want to throttle him.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀I inhale sharply and turn my phone's flashlight toward the ground, looking for a small metal tracking chip. Andre had given one to Emma so that he could find her, but the one he had given her was designed to give a vicinity, not a direct location.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Fucking amateur.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀I roll my eyes, adjusting the straps on my overalls. At least all of us got to change out of our formal clothing before we went out to the middle of bumfuck nowhere to look for Emma.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀"I find the tracker!" Marie calls out, and I let out a sigh of relief as I get up from my doubled-over position. "Thank, God," I wince as my back pops slightly, "my back is killing me."

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Andre and I walk over to Marie, who is kneeling by a patch of gravel. Her phone's flashlight illuminates the chip, and I see a glint of red.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀"There's blood on it," Marie mutters, answering my silent question. She rises to her feet and blows on the tracker before turning around and passing the chip to Andre.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀"Maybe this is good," Andre examines the chip, making my eyes roll, "She...she got out of the hellhole."

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀I cross my arms and tilt my head at Andre, "It sounds like you're trying to convince yourself that she's still alive."

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Marie doesn't seem to disagree with me as she motions to the caved-in terrain, "It looks like a meteor crashed here."

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Andre shrugs, trying to come up with an excuse, "Maybe Sam can jump like Maeve does?" With more conviction, he nods, "He landed here with Emma and then jumped again."

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀"Yeah, except Queen Maeve hadn't been in prison for most of her life," I then clapped with a deadpanned look, "Congrats. You cracked the case, Andre."

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Andre inhales deeply, "I had to do something."

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀"Yeah, but..." Marie scoffs, shaking her head at Andre, "you didn't do anything. And of all people, you went to Emma?"

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Just as Marie finishes her sentence, buzzing and chimes sound around the area, and I feel my phone vibrate in the front pocket of my overalls.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀I grab my phone and see that it's a notification from God U Rankings.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀"What is it?" Marie asks, peering over my shoulder to see my screen as I click on the notification. I don't hesitate to scroll through the rankings, looking for Jordan's name.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Before I can speak, Jordan does from a few yards away, "New rankings are out. Cole's number one, you're two, and I'm still five."

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀I click my phone off and look up at Jordan, who is staring right at Marie, "Wow. Congrats."

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀"Rankings? Really?" Andre scoffs, taking a few steps over to Jordan, "We got bigger fucking problems."

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀"Says number three." Jordan fumes, walking up to Andre until they are a few feet apart, "But you're right, we do. Turns out the school has a fucking Mengele Health Clinic. We don't know who's in on it."

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀"If..." Jordan's eyes flicker to me, and I look away for a second, "if Brink was, maybe other professors, maybe Dean Shetty."

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀I can't say that Jordan's adoration for Brink doesn't hurt because it does. But I can't blame them.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Nobody knows how Brink makes and still makes me feel. Hell, I didn't even know the effect he had on me until he died.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Jordan then lets out a humorless chuckle, "But you guys are gonna get a green van and a talking dog and fucking solve it?"

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Jordan scoffs, looking at Marie and Andre, "You're just gonna end up like that fucking cricket."

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀"Emma," Marie corrects, making Jordan and I look at her, "The lost girl who's in deep shit? Her name is Emma."

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀"Jordan's right," Cate speaks up for the first time that night.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Jordan gives Andre a pointed look, "Fucking thank you." They then turn around, walking back over to my Lexus, which is our ride for tonight.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀"Wherever Emma is, it's not here." Cate walks down the steep hill she was standing on, ready to follow Jordan back to the car.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀"Cate," Andre's voice makes Cate stop walking, "come on."

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Cate spins around, her eyes downturned with exhaustion, "Why don't you ever fucking listen to..." She takes a deep breath, "This girl could be dead, Andre. We are in over our heads."

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Cate then turns and goes over to my car, and I walk toward Andre with crossed arms, "Why didn't you come to me? I would've..." I inhale deeply, considering my words, "I would've mimicked Emma's powers and saved Sam myself."

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Andre sighs and looks at me sadly, "I know how much having Luke's powers means to you."

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀I inhale sharply, glancing up for a moment as I feel a wave of pain hit me, "I don't want to let go of Luke's powers, but...if losing Luke's powers means saving Sam, I'd do it in a heartbeat."

Cᴏʟᴇᴛᴛᴇ Bʀɪɴᴋ's POV

I FEEL LIPS TRAILING ALONG MY NECK, and a small sigh escapes my lips.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀The moment I arch into the lips, they vanish, and a whine escapes me.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀I toss and turn in bed, trying to find a comfortable position. Once I settle on my stomach, a soft hand trails up my right thigh, leaving goosebumps in its wake.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀I shudder lightly, and before I know it, another hand rakes its fingers against my left thigh. These fingers feel larger, not by much, but enough to be noticeable.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Both hands trail up my thighs and in between my legs, and I feel completely safe.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Then I feel hands on my shoulder, shaking me.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀"Cole?" A faint, familiar voice calls out, but I want to stay here. Wherever here is.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀"Cole!"

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀I jolt up from my bed, gasping. I blink widely until I notice Jordan, in their male form, holding my shoulders.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀"Hi," I whisper, glancing around to see that it's now morning.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀"Hey," Jordan mutters back before tilting their head, "Were you having a sex dream?"

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀I freeze. "No."

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Jordan looks at me with a deadpan expression. "It seemed like you were having a sex dream. You were kind of...moaning in your sleep."

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Was I?

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Fucking hell.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀"I wasn't," I deny, shrugging and putting on my best face of confusion.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀"Okay..." Jordan slants their eyes at me as if they don't believe me and pulls their hands away from my shoulders.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀That's when it hits me.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Their hands feel like the hands in my dream.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Fuck.

Cᴏʟᴇᴛᴛᴇ Bʀɪɴᴋ's POV

MY MIND REMAINS FIXATED ON MY DREAM EVEN AS I WALK AROUND THE ECHOING HALLWAYS OF THE CRIMEFIGHTING BUILDING HOURS LATER.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Jordan was in my dream, a dream that was bordering on pornographic.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀I try to convince myself that my dream about Jordan was just based on their looks, but my heart begs to differ.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀I mean, my brain does go a bit fuzzy when they smile and my heart does that fluttery thing when they get close. My hands get a little sweaty and sometimes, just sometimes, I look at their lips.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀But that doesn't mean anything, right?

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Sure, Jordan is attractive; I'm not blind to that fact.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Do I like them romantically?

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀...No.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Fuck, I hate feelings.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀I grumble under my breath as I trudge up the stairs, my thoughts still a tangled mess. However, my train of thought is abruptly interrupted as I collide with someone, sending me staggering backward.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀"Sorry..." My words trail off as I look up to see that I bumped into Tek fucking Knight. As in the host of the true-crime series The Whole Truth. As in the guy who has the ability to make quick deductions and can sniff anything out.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Fucking fuckity fuck.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀I force a smile onto my face, cautious not to overdo it and arouse suspicion. "Morning, Tek," I greet him, my gaze briefly flicking to the cameras lurking in the background, making sure to keep a steady heartbeat. "What brings you here?"

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Tek Knight seems unusually pleased to see me, sending my pulse into a frenzy. "I'm here to cover your father's murder," he explains, "#WhyDidGoldenBoyDoIt is still trending, after all."

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀"Well," I retort, struggling to keep my emotions in check and opting for a facade of ambiguity, "didn't he just snap?"

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀"Some people believe that," Tek responds, tilting his head as he studies me closely. "Do you think Luke just snapped?"

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀I shrug, feigning a hint of uncertainty. "Sometimes, a cigar is just a cigar."

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Tek nods slowly. "Sometimes."

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀I swallow uneasily and suppress a wince as his eyes shift to my throat. He's sharp, I'll give him that.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀"Why don't we have an interview?" Tek suddenly proposes, causing my heart to race.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀I gesture towards the hallway behind Tek. "I have a class soon."

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Tek purses his lips. "After your classes, then."

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀I slide my hands into my pockets, clenching my fists tightly, and offer a somewhat strained smile. "Why not?"

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀I continue on my way, pushing past him, but he calls out once more, "Oh, and don't forget to invite your friends, too. Andre Anderson and his father, Cate Dunlap, and, of course, Jordan Li."

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀At the mention of Jordan, my heart skips a beat. But I keep moving forward, my eyes flaring with fire.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀If Tek tries to put any blame on Jordan, I'm not sure I'll be able to restrain myself from taking matters into my own hands.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀"It's fine, Jordan. If roles were reversed, I wouldn't have stopped."

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀I fucking meant that.

Cᴏʟᴇᴛᴛᴇ Bʀɪɴᴋ's POV

INSTEAD OF GOING TO CLASS, I opted to hide in the bathroom until Tek finished filming his introduction.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀After the hall clears of cameras and observant assholes, I sprint toward the dormitories, feeling an urgent need to warn Jordan about Tek's presence on campus and warn them to stay on high alert.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀As I rush into the hallway leading to our dorm, I hastily grab my keycard from my pocket. I swipe it too quickly, emitting a frustrated grunt, and then swipe it more deliberately. Darting into the room, I'm met with an empty space.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀A small, frustrated scream escapes my lips before I leave the dorm. In the distance, I notice levitating glasses and a cap, prompting me to run over.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀"Maverick!" I skid to a stop in front of Maverick, who turns to me, or at least his glasses and cap do.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀"Have you seen Jordan?" I inquire, and Maverick's glasses and cap move up and down in a nodding motion. "Yeah," he replies, his cap tilting toward the other hall, "I think they went to Rufus' room. They just walked past me like they couldn't see me."

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀I snort out a laugh, and Maverick's glasses and cap move, and then I hear him laugh.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀"Thanks," I mutter, snapping back to my purpose. I began sprinting down the hall, calling over my shoulder, "I owe you!"

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀I race to Rufus' dorm on the opposite side of the building, and just as I turn the corner, I see Jordan, in their female form, pounding their fists against the door.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀"Rufus, open this goddamn door, you piece of shit," Jordan shouts, banging harder on the door.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀My eyes widen and I speedwalk over to Jordan, "What the hell is going on?"

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Jordan punched the door before looking over, "Rufus has Marie in there. I saw them talking earlier and he touched her, and she just followed him. She looked half-asleep when she did."

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀My heart skips a beat, and I gesture for Jordan to move aside. Just as fireballs form in my hands, I faintly hear Rufus' voice from inside, "What the fuck, you crazy cunt!"

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀I launch the flames at the door, causing it to cave in. I step into the room, witnessing blood splatter onto Marie's face.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Rufus lets out a pained groan and drops to his knees, clutching his dick. A dick that has been severely damaged.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀"That..." I mutter and my entire body vibrates, "is awesome. Holy shit."

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Jordan steps in beside me with a small wince before shrugging, "Nice work."

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀"Come on," they say, walking over to Marie, who wipes the blood from her face with a grimace. Jordan extends a hand to Marie, who takes it without hesitation.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Marie gets to her feet, grabs her bag, and I follow her out of the dorm room as Jordan glances back at Rufus, muttering, "Piece of dickless shit." Rufus whimpers from within the room as we walk away.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀"Are you okay?" Jordan rummages through their gym bag and grabs out a towel, "That was fucking dope. How'd you do that?"

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Marie still looks somewhat haunted. "No idea."

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Behind us, I hear Rufus whimper, "Oh, my dick!"

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Marie glances back with furrowed eyebrows, "Should we call somebody?"

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀"No," Jordan and I both firmly say.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Marie takes the towel from Jordan, wiping her face, and we continue down the hall.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀"The guy's, like, walking Rufenal," Jordan explains, scoffing lightly, "blowing pheromones on anyone who gets too close. Fuck him."

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀I pat Marie's shoulder, "You just did the world a favor, Marie."

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Jordan, however, glares at Marie, "What were you thinking, asking him for help?"

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Marie shrugs, adjusting her backpack on her shoulder, "I can't just do nothing."

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀"You are unbelievable," Jordan shakes their head before letting out a humorless chuckle, "I would kill to be number two again. I would kill you to be number two again."

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Marie side-eyes Jordan, as if they might actually blast her at that moment.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Jordan rolls their eyes, "You're really gonna throw it all away?"

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀"I'm not throwing it all away," Marie snaps her head back in surprise, "I'm not. But Emma's my friend."

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Marie stops walking and turns to face Jordan and me, forcing us to stop as well.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Jordan tilts their head, "What happened to you don't owe anyone anything, and to leave you the fuck alone?"

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Marie glances away for a second, "Maybe I was wrong."

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Jordan held out their hands, "Maybe you're an idiot."

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀"You know what?" Marie smiles at Jordan, but it lacks sincerity. "You're full of shit."

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀I step closer to Marie as she glares at Jordan, continuing, "You know I'm right, you're just scared."

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Jordan hung their head for a moment before looking up at Marie, taking a step closer, "Tek fucking Knight is on campus," My spine straightens. Did he already go up to Jordan? "If he finds out what you're doing, you're lucky you end up in prison. He fucks people up."

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Marie shrugs. "Since when do you care about anyone not named Jordan?" She looks at me for a second, and she looks like she's going to add something.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Instead, she turns and walks away.

Cᴏʟᴇᴛᴛᴇ Bʀɪɴᴋ's POV

"I SLIT A SHEET, A SHEET, I SLIT. UPON A SLITTED SHEET, I SIT." Tek repeats for the millionth fucking time.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀I'm not kidding. I got my mic clipped onto my shirt five minutes ago and he's still on his vocal warm-ups.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀I release a deep, exasperated breath as he finally stops his warm-up routine. He nods at a crew member, "Lights." All the lights in the auditorium dimmed, leaving only the stage lights to illuminate us.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀"Camera," Tek directs his attention to the cameraman, his hand poised in the air, ready to initiate the countdown. "I'll give the count."

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀His fingers form a silent countdown: "Five, four, three..." With each number, he descends into silence, and on the count of one, he points at himself, and I avert my gaze, suppressing a quiet scoff.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Narcissistic, much?

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀I glance back at Tek as he clasps his hands together, his expression as stoic as ever. "To understand Golden Boy's carnage, we first must understand the man. And who knew him better than the self-proclaimed sister, Colette Brink?"

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀"Colette Brink, join us now," Tek inhales before continuing. "Well, let me start with the big question: Why did he do it, Colette?"

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀I shrug, my lips pursing in contemplation. "I don't know. He just snapped. Maybe all that power got to him." My words sting my own heart, but there's no turning back now.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Tek tilts his head, his gaze fixed on me. "Well, that must've been hard for you, knowing that you'd never beat him."

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀I incline my head, offering a small smile. "Well, I can mimic his powers, so it's safe to say that if I wanted to, I could."

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Tek presses on, probing deeper. "If he weren't at this school, you would've been number one."

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀I nod with a shrug, "That's how numbers work, yeah."

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Tek narrows his eyes, acknowledging my deflection. "Some of my sources say you still have his powers. Why?"

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Who the fuck are your sources? I'll gut them.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀My heart pounds in my chest as panic creeps in. "He was strong. He was number one, after all. Why would I trade those powers in?"

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Tek's persistent hum is starting to grate on my nerves. "What do you think your father would think about that?"

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀I don't really give a shit what he thinks.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀"I think he'd be proud," I reply.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Tek leans in slightly, the tension between us palpable. "Proud that you have the powers of his killer?"

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀I narrow my eyes, my voice unwavering. "Proud that I can protect myself even when he isn't here."

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Tek hums again, and the sound is growing increasingly annoying.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀"What did Golden Boy say to you just before he died?" Tek asks, and a rush of tears threatens to break free.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀"That he loved me and hoped I could forgive him," I whisper.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀"Have you?" Tek inquires, and I remain silent. He notices a flicker of panic in my eyes. "I think you're happy your father's gone."

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀I freeze for a moment, my voice shaking. "No."

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀"People who have seen you and Golden Boy together say you two were quite close," Tek begins, my chest tightening with unspoken pain. "Closer than you and your father, some would say."

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀"No," I deny, though it hurts to say.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀"See," Tek smirks at me, "your pulse just went up."

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀I glare at Tek, my eyes filled with venom and unshed tears, burrowing myself into my seat.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀"Were you not happy when you found out the person who killed your only family died?" Tek pushes, and I break.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀"No!" I slam my hands against the armrest of my chair, a single tear escaping my eye. "No. Luke was my brother. He was my family!"

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Tek's eyes brighten, digging deeper. "And Brink wasn't?"

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀No, he wasn't.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀I rise abruptly from my chair, hovering over Tek. I notice his fists clenching as my eyes ignite with flames. "You've been telling me what you think this whole time, but you want to know what I think?" I put a finger to the mic clipped to my shirt, and in an instant, it disintegrates. I repeat the process with Tek's mic, his nostrils flaring in anger.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀I lock eyes with him, ensuring he sees the hatred in my gaze. "I think you're a coward who gets off on unraveling other people's lives because you don't have one."

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀I lean in close to his ear, my voice dripping with contempt, "How fucking pathetic."

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀I pull away from him a second later and I don't waste a second storming out of the auditorium.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀As I step into the corridor, my heart races, and breathing becomes harder.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀The world falls into a deafening hush, my own heartbeat and the rush of blood in my ears the only sounds. Gasping for air, I stagger through the halls, but every breath seems to drain me.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Leaning against a wall, I clutch my chest, desperately trying to breathe.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Beneath the racket of my heart, I hear a voice calling my name, not my full name, but a familiar "Cole."

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀I scan my surroundings, but my vision blurs through unshed tears, obscuring everything into a wash of colors.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Strong hands grip my shoulders, and, strangely, I feel completely safe. I let them guide me out of the building, struggling to find air.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀But it's as if the air is being sucked from my lungs.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀I blink rapidly and see trees in the distance, the hands guiding me toward them. A voice, filled with fear, whispers, "You're gonna be okay, Cole. Just stay with me."

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀The voice's fear resonates deep within me. I struggle to draw in a breath, not just for myself, but for the voice.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀As we pass a cluster of trees, my legs buckle, and I fall to my knees in the forest.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀The hands still hold me, unwilling to let go of me.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Fading into unconsciousness, I wonder if this is the end—death from not being able to fucking breathe.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀The hands rub at my side, and my head tightens and I can't take it anymore.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀I scream. Sonically scream.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Then, everything fades to black.

Cᴏʟᴇᴛᴛᴇ Bʀɪɴᴋ's POV

THE FIRST THING I HEAR IN THE DARKNESS IS SNIFFLING LIKE SOMEONE HAS JUST FINISHED CRYING. My five senses start to come to me, and I find myself on a soft, warm bed that smells like cinnamon and cedar.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Next, I feel a hand on my cheek, and it's trembling. I don't feel cold, though, so it can't be because they're cold.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀At feeling it tremble, an urge wells up within me to comfort whoever is holding me.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀I try to pull myself out of the nothingness, but it's like quicksand, pulling me back down. My fingers flutter against the mattress.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀The hand on my cheek stills, and I hear a voice, "Cole?"

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀I fight against the tug of the darkness, needing to wake up.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀"Open your eyes, Cole," The voice whispers. Jordan Li's voice.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀My heart clenches, and my eyes flutter open, letting in a burst of sunlight.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀I wince and clench my eyes shut as they burn slightly, and I hear Jordan curse under their breath before footsteps sound. A second later, through my eyelids, the room's light dims slightly.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀I open my eyes and blink slowly, adjusting to the room. I'm in our dorm room, but when I look around, I realize that I'm in Jordan's bed, not mine.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀I inhale deeply and shuffle up the bed, leaning against their headboard.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀In an instant, Jordan, in their female form, returns to my side, sitting on the edge of their bed.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Their eyes roam all over my face, and I feel heat rush to my cheeks, making me look down.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀"How are you feeling?" Jordan asks, and I look up, making eye contact. My heart stops for a moment once I notice their bloodshot eyes.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀"Okay," I nod, but my throat hurts and my voice comes out hoarse, as if I've been screaming.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Jordan notices and grabs a water bottle from their nightstand, removing the cap for me. I take the water bottle and gulp down a few sips until I'm sure that I can speak without pain, "What happened?"

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Jordan tilts their head at me, their eyes widening slightly, "You don't remember?"

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀I put a hand to my throat, "I remember leaving Tek's interview," A flicker of anger hits me as I remember, "then everything kind of gets hazy."

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Jordan clears their throat, shifting closer to me, "You had a panic attack."

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀"A panic attack?" I ask, and Jordan nods, making my eyebrows furrow, "How do you know?"

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀"I've had my fair share," Jordan fiddles with their fingers, looking down, "and I can tell the signs. I'm the one who found you."

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀I wince slightly as I remember; Gasping for air, I stagger through the halls, but every breath seems to drain me. Leaning against a wall, I clutch my chest, desperately trying to breathe. Beneath the racket of my heart, I hear a voice calling my name, not my full name, but a familiar "Cole."

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀"Oh," I say before cringing and putting the water bottle down on Jordan's nightstand. I put my hands on theirs, stopping them from playing with their fingers, "Thank you."

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Jordan looks up at me in a way I've been seeing a lot lately. A look that made me feel warm inside.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀"There's something else, Cole," The way Jordan speaks makes my heart race, and I straighten up further in the bed, "What?"

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Jordan inhales sharply before explaining, "When I took you out of the building and to the woods, you screamed. Like...sonic screamed."

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀"That's..." I shake my head, "That's not possible. I don't have my mom's powers anymore. I haven't in years."

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀I then hold out my hand, a small ball of fire forming, "See? I still have Luke's powers."

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Jordan stares at me for a moment before tucking their hair behind their ears, making me gasp. There was dried blood inside their ears.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀I reach out my hands, cupping their cheeks. My eyes dart from ear to ear, and my eyes flutter slightly, "Did I do that?"

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Jordan puts their hands against mine, pulling them away slightly, but they still hold onto my hands, "It's not that bad. I shifted as soon as you screamed, so I only bled for a second."

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀My eyes glisten slightly, "I hurt you."

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀I had hurt people before and didn't care, but this time? This time, I feel like a monster.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀"You couldn't control it," Jordan shakes their head, "What...what triggered the panic attack?"

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀I chew on the inside of my bottom lip, feeling the weight of my thoughts. "Tek just got to me, I guess," I hesitate, the words lingering in the air. I know that Jordan loved Brink, and Brink was amazing to them. I don't want to shatter their view of him.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀"Hey," Jordan murmurs, their grip on my fingers tightening. "don't do that. You don't have to hold anything back from me."

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀I meet Jordan's gaze, drawing in a deep breath. "I just...I realized that my dad wasn't my family. He was my dad, but he wasn't family, and I'm..." I pause briefly, my voice trembling with emotion. "I'm glad he's gone."

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Jordan stares at me for a moment, and I can't figure out what they're thinking. "Luke once told me that I didn't really know who I was, and he was right. I don't know who I am," I confess, my eyes glistening with unshed tears. "I've always been Brink's mini-me."

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Jordan lets go of my hands, and I feel my heart pierce.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Please don't hate me. I won't be able to handle it.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Instead of pulling away, Jordan gently cradles my face. "You're not your dad, Cole," they reassure me, and a sigh of relief escapes my lips. "you'll figure out who you are."

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀"I'm gonna tell you something because you're basically my baby sister," Luke suddenly says as we stroll through the campus, carrying boxes filled with our belongings. I roll my eyes, and a warm smile graces his lips, "I think you haven't figured out who you are yet."

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀"Are twenty-year-olds supposed to know who they are?" I ask, and he shakes his head, fixing me with a meaningful gaze, "Not in that way," he replies. After a brief pause, he stops walking and turns to face me, forcing me to stop too. "Tell me something, anything, you like."

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀I hesitate.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀I don't know what I like.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀"Exactly," Luke remarks in response to my silence. "This year, I want you to figure out who Colette is. Not Brink's daughter, not number three in the rankings, not a future member of the Seven," His words make me smile, "but Colette."

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀He holds a finger to my heart, "Who are you, Colette?"

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀"I'll even help you, Lettie," He adds with a playful wink before continuing toward the dorms, leaving me to stare after him.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀He never got to help me figure out who I am.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀I blink back into the present and let out a small shudder, "What if who I am isn't important? I just...I don't want to be a nobody."

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Jordan's lips tilt upwards, and their eyes never leave mine. "You're not a nobody, Cole," they say softly, "You're somebody to me."

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Time seems to slow, and the world around us fades into the background. The only person that matters to me at this moment is Jordan.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Jordan's smile fades slightly, and it's like a magnetic pull is drawing us closer. My heart races, and I take a deep breath, savoring the moment. Our gazes remain locked, our eyes saying everything our words haven't.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀"Tell me something, anything, you like."

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀I like Jordan Li.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀As I lean in, our lips inch closer together, unhurried and deliberate. In a flicker of a moment, Jordan shifts to their male form, and I can't find it in me to complain.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀My eyes flutter closed, and I can feel the warmth of Jordan's breath mingling with mine. The anticipation electrifies the air as our lips finally meet.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀The kiss is slow and gentle, like dipping your toes in the water.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Then Jordan pulls away, their eyes wide and searching mine. "Was that your first kiss?"

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀"Yes," I nod.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀A blush creeps onto Jordan's cheeks, and they ask, "Was it good?"

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀The shyness in me vanishes, and I lean in close enough to let my lips brush against theirs, a teasing promise. "Kiss me again, and I'll tell you."

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Jordan closes the gap between us, our kiss deepening. I savor the softness of Jordan's lips, the way their lips mold against mine, and the gentle, rhythmic exchange of breath and taste.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀I cradled their face in my hands, my fingers tracing the contours of their jaw and the curve of their neck. Their hands found their way to my waist, their touch setting my skin on fire. Our bodies pressed closer, fitting together like two halves of a whole.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀I moan into Jordan's mouth as they lift me onto their lap, and I grind against their lap, savoring the sound of their small breaths and grunts.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀My skin tingled with every point of contact, their hands and lips igniting a fire that raged within. I couldn't contain my need for them any longer, so I reached for the hem of their shirt, fingers curling around the fabric as I started to pull it upward.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀And then, just as things are about to escalate, the door to our room swings open.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Jordan and I jump apart, our chests heaving with excitement and embarrassment. In the process, Jordan tumbles to the floor.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀In the doorway stands Andre, frozen in place, his eyes wide with surprise.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀"What the fuck?" he whispers, his gaze darting between Jordan and me.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀I scratch the back of my neck awkwardly as Jordan rose to their feet, "It's not what it looks like," When Jordan and Andre both give me pointed looks, I shrug, flailing my hands around, "Okay, it's exactly what it looks like."

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀I clear my throat and get up from the bed, standing beside Jordan, "So...what are you doing here?"

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀"Maverick said you weren't in class," Andre gestures to the hallway behind him, "and I was worried," he adds, his eyes briefly landing on Jordan, "Now, I see why you weren't in class."

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀I nod slowly before turning to pat Jordan on the shoulder. As soon as my hand touches their chest, I cringe and pull away.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀I turn back to Andre, my lips pursed, before I nod once again. "Well, I'm gonna head to class."

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀And with that, I bolt from the room, leaving behind the smothering embarrassment.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀So fucking embarrassing.

Cᴏʟᴇᴛᴛᴇ Bʀɪɴᴋ's POV

INSTEAD OF GOING TO MY SUPERHERO BRANDING CLASS, I went to Brink's office.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀I wince slightly and shove my keycard into the keypad, unlocking my dad's office.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Uncertainty gnaws at me. I'm not entirely sure what I'm looking for, but I need to find something that explains my using my mom's power while still having Luke's.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Since those intruders have my dad's laptop, I walk toward his file cabinet, rifling through it. I land on my name and I grab out the manila folder, opening it on the cabinet.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀The top has the basics: my full name, my appearance, my public image, but nothing stands out.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀I flip through the files, and I find a section about my powers and my abilities, and I read carefully.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Power Mimicry: Colette can temporarily copy the superhuman abilities of anyone she encounters. This includes skills and any unique powers or talents, making her a versatile and unpredictable force.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Rapid Adaptation: She has an exceptional capacity to adapt quickly to new powers and abilities, mastering them with remarkable speed. This adaptability ensures she can effectively utilize a wide range of skills in combat or other situations.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀This isn't any new information to me, but as my eyes scan down the page, I see a small section labeled 'Notes'.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀It's my dad's handwriting.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀There is a possibility that Colette's body will remember the DNA sequence of the powers she mimics. As a result, she can access these powers at will without the need for repeated physical contact.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀What the fuck?

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀"No," He grits out, making me release my hold on him. He drops to the ground and I whisper into his ear, "Now, go before I change my mind."

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀I swear for a moment, just a moment, I feel something else humming in my veins. Something other than Luke's powers.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Did I...did I use Cate's powers?

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀I take the manila folder and shut the cabinet. Just as I step to leave, two chimes come from my phone.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀I grab my phone out of my back pocket and look at the screen, seeing two notifications: one from God U News, and one from Jordan.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀God U News: Guardian of Godolkin Marie Moreau reveals that she isn't a Guardian! Jordan Li and Colette Brink are the real heroes. Click to read more.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀My eyes widen slightly. How the fuck do I miss these things?

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Jordan Li 🦎: Emma is back, and Sam is going after Dr. Cardosa. Meet us in the parking lot now.

Cᴏʟᴇᴛᴛᴇ Bʀɪɴᴋ's POV

CRIES ERUPT FROM INSIDE CARDOSA'S HOUSE, causing my heart rate to skyrocket. Andre doesn't hesitate; he hovers his hand over the lock on Cardosa's front door and unlocks it with his powers.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Andre and I take the lead as we guide the group through the house, heading towards the kitchen. As we enter, the scene before us is chaotic, with Cardosa desperately shielding his husband and daughter from a furious Sam.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀I can't see Sam, but I can hear his anguished voice, "I don't want to...he can't have them!"

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Suddenly, Sam's fist slams into the long kitchen table, splitting it in half. Cardosa, startled, spots us a few feet away and pushes his family toward us, urging them to run out of the house.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀He gestures for us to stay put, his hands held out towards Sam, his voice trembling, "Sam, Sam, I'm here, look at me. You don't have to do this, okay?"

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀A tense silence descends, and then Sam lets out a guttural growl.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Andre swiftly moves into action, extending his hands to manipulate the metal in the nearby fridge. With a surge of power, he hurls it at Sam, who crashes into the pantry. The rest of us rush into the kitchen, while Cardosa escapes.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Andre clenches his fists, trying to maintain control over the fridge, but Sam's strength prevails. Sam hurls the fridge across the room and turns his furious gaze toward Andre.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀"Sam," Andre pleads, his hands outstretched, "Sam, you don't want to do this."

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀"I know you. Y-You..." Sam's voice wavers for a moment, and for a second, I think there's hope, but then he narrows his eyes, "I escaped, and you caught me. Y-You're one of them!"

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Marie takes a step closer to Sam, desperation in her voice, "We didn't know who you were then."

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀"Sam," Cate begs beside me, "let us help you."

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀"No!" Sam snarls, venom in his eyes as he glares at Cate, "You are not touching me again, Cate! Get the fuck out of here!"

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀I turn sharply to Cate, alarmed by Sam's words. What the fuck does he mean, "again"?

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Sam starts to pound his own head roughly, his eyes wide and crazed, "You're all fucking puppets!"

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀I catch a glint of steel as Marie takes out her knife, ready to cut open her palm, but I stop her and step toward Sam, my arms held out.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Out of the corner of my eye, I see Jordan, now in their male form, inch closer to me, but I signal for them to stay where they are.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀"Sam," I keep my voice gentle, and his eyes lock onto mine, scanning my face, "I knew your brother. Luke was like a brother to me, so that makes you important to me. Okay? Let me help you."

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀"I..." Sam whispers, his eyes softening slightly, "I know you."

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀"What do you mean, you know me?" I ask, glancing around in confusion. "Did...did Luke talk about me?"

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Just as Sam is about to answer, he winces and clutches his forehead, muttering, "N-No, they're not!"

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Behind me, I hear Andre mutter, "The fuck is his problem?"

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀"Andre," I hiss, turning my head to glare at him.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀When I look back at Sam, his eyes are wide with anger as he stares at Andre, demanding, "What did you just say?"

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Sam takes a threatening step toward Andre, and I step between them, hoping to diffuse the tension.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Bad idea.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Sam strikes me with a powerful blow to my side, sending me hurtling into the stove. I cry out in pain and glance up to see Andre on the floor behind Sam, and blood oozing from Marie's palm in a controlled way.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀I find myself lifted off the ground, Sam's hands gripping my throat. My breath comes in gasps, but I close my eyes and focus on the fire within me. Suddenly, my entire body ignites in flames, and my clothes disintegrate.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Sam releases his hold on my neck due to the intense heat radiating off of me, and I respond with a fiery punch to his abdomen. However, he swiftly sidesteps my attack.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Amid the wreckage of the destroyed pantry, Sam grabs a long piece of wood. I try to disarm him with a kick, but he grabs my leg and pulls me toward him. I'm thrown onto my back, the wood impaling me seconds later.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀I scream loudly as the flames around my body dissipate, but I quickly will them back. The wood turns to ash as the flames envelop my body. I crawl away from Sam, my eyes wide with dread.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀What if he's too far gone?

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Then we'll do anything to get him back, a little voice in my head whispers.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Sam aims a punch at me, but Jordan steps in, absorbing the brunt of the blow. They groan in pain as Sam delivers another punch, and they attempt to push him away. Sam strikes again, but this time, Jordan catches his arm, swiftly shifting into their female form.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀With potent effort, Jordan kicks Sam away, sending a small energy blast from their boot. Sam manages to regain his footing, launching a barrage of punches at Jordan, but they deftly dodge every single one.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀After a moment, an enormous energy ball materializes in Jordan's hands, and they hurl it at Sam, propelling him through the glass patio doors.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀I breathe a sigh of relief as Jordan turns to look at me, their eyes widening at the flames surrounding my body. "Cool," they mutter, and I retract the flames from my hands to let Jordan help me stand.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀As I rise to my feet, Marie stumbles into the kitchen. Her eyes widen at the sight of my flaming body, and she remarks, "Oh."

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Jordan narrows their eyes at Marie, and she removes her long coat, offering it to me.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀"Thanks," I mutter, slipping into the coat and fastening it.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀We all make our way to the backyard, including Andre, where Sam is beginning to rise to his feet.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀"Sam," Andre pleads, stepping in front of me with his hands out, "Sam. We loved Luke. When we found out he was trying to rescue you, we tried to help."

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Sam just screams and approaches Andre, but Emma's voice breaks through, "Sam!"

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀My jaw literally drops as Emma, towering over the house in her naked form, steps out.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Guess if you eat more than enough, you'll get bigger.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Emma grabs Sam and pins him to the ground, causing him to squirm. "Let me go!"

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀"Sam, you're all right," Emma soothes, her voice calm, "I'm here. You're okay."

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Sam continues to squirm, distressed. "They're gonna put us back in The Woods. I have to stop them. Why don't you let me stop them?"

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀"Hey," Emma's single word brings Sam to a halt, "Wherever we go, we promised we're in this together."

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀I step forward, but Jordan extends their hand to block my path.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀I grab their hand, silently conveying that I'm okay, and approach Sam with my arms outstretched.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀"Sam," I kneel in front of him, meeting his eyes, "we're gonna make sure you never have to go back. I promise. We will protect you," I look deeply into his eyes, "I will pr—."

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀In an instant, I find myself in a bed, my body aching with exhaustion.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀I groan as I shift in the bed, feeling like I've been working out for hours.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀I blink my eyes open and realize a hand is moving from my stomach to the valley between my boobs. My naked boobs.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀A head nuzzles against my shoulder, and I glance down to see Jordan, now in their female form, lying beside me, also naked.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀I gasp softly, causing them to stir beside me. I tense up, becoming aware of the soreness and stickiness between my legs.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀With a deep breath, I move my hand down to my vagina, and my heart races when I feel something wet and sticky. I bring my hand to my face and my eyes widen, seeing the cum on my fingers.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀What the fuck happened?

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀My heart thuds in my chest.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Why can't I remember anything?
