Chapter 13: Jay
Jay gazed down at the sea, watching the waves lap over each other. The sea nymph was not there anymore, and the dryads had silently disappeared into the woodland groves. Yet Jay still longed to fly down, turn invisible, and explore the lower world, even though the laws forbid it. Quietly, he started to head lower and lower into the lower world.
"Hey! Jay! Where ya goin'?" Rain asked, swooping in behind him. He was like the weather rain, sometimes light and soft, unpredictable, swooping in from above.
"I wish that the laws would allow us to enter the lower world." Jay sighed.
"And I wish that Jay Freeman would actually stop missing class to explore the out-of-bounds lower world so that he will actually understand that... "
"Understand what?" Jay suddenly snapped, a look of anger in his eyes. "I had to understand something and you didn't tell me?"
"Yo, chillax. I was just saying that everyone needs to understand that if three spirits of the three realms get too close to each other, creating a triangle of power, the Shadow will awaken from his slumber."
"I've seen the line of power, between this water nymph and me." Jay suggested.
"Wait... ok... whaaat?" Rain gasped, "You didn't tell me that you saw or met a water nymph?"
"Well... if I told you, it would reveal the fact that I had gone to the lower world."
"Have you?"
"No, of course not! I've only seen them."
"Good."
"Why?"
"Coz that's dangerous..." Rain started to say, fear in his eyes. "Going down to the lower world means a definite chance to create a triangle of power. You might have actually started it. You never know if a dryad saw you."
Jay was really confused. Ignoring Rain's protests, he turned invisible and flew along the borders. The nymph was there again, and as he glanced up into the sun, three blue jay feathers landed into his hands. Perplexed, he glanced at them and shoved them in his pocket. They probably weren't important, right?
Sighing, he dropped his head and started the walk home. It was a no-school day, but he was in no mood to play today. He was just so confused. First the nymph, then Rain telling him about the triangle of power and now the three blue jay feathers. He knew the legend of the Hunters was just a story, but he felt somehow unsettled by the string of events that had just unraveled.
Try as he might, he couldn't stop thinking about the three feathers in his pocket. Once he got home, he laid out the three feathers on his bed, and slumped on his cloud, trying to get his head around the mysterious appearance of the feathers.
"Blue jay feathers. Feathers. Blue jays. Jays!" Jay jolted upright. "That's me!" He exclaimed. How could he have been so stupid not to see it? These definitely meant something. His mind flew around like a bird. It had to have something to do with Rain's triangle of power. To Jay, it no longer seemed like a story.
Hurriedly, he pulled out a cloud from his bed and stashed the feathers inside. "There," he thought, "now they will be safe and sound." The feathers were his now, and he knew that he had to protect them. They meant something, even if he did not know what.
