Special Q&A chapter
Hello everyone! I intended to publish this on my first anniversary of being on Wattpad but it took a little longer than expected. I appreciate your patience and thank everyone who has asked questions! I'm very grateful for that, it makes me feel like I'm not only shouting to the void.
So, let's get into it! But first, a little introduction maybe.
I created Chronicles of Mystery almost three years ago, after a game I played with my family. It was about solving an interesting mystery. I love the idea of solving dark crimes and writing a fun saga about detectives investigating seemed entertaining to me. I was still a very novice writer (I still am though), I had plenty of ideas but hadn't written any into an actual story, except some short stories that were very violent, most of them ending with the main character dead. I wasn't really trying to convey any message, I just liked the gore. So I thought trying my hand with a detective story the likes of Sherlock Holmes would do good for my writing style. I surely didn't expect it to grow this big in my head and become such an important project for me. Keep in mind that it was supposed to be some sort of try for me, nothing I was too dedicated to. But I slowly began to imagine new things to add, new storylines, new ideas, until it became much more than a detective story. I keep adding things to this day and it seems like I don't know how to stop, I have now confused both my friends and family with my complicated storylines and timelines.
At first, I only had Lucy and Alistair in mind, not much else. As for their names, it came pretty easy to me. Alistair popped into my head for no reason, it just appeared, as if he was begging to exist. Lucy took me a little longer. I first thought of the name Juline, or something of the sort. But, then, Lucy seemed much more natural to the tongue, as well as her last name, it makes for a very striking effect that I'm fond of. For Alistair's last name, let's just say that it's a reference to my roots and the place I live in. Plus, he needed a very complicated last name, so I went with that.
The rest is a bit hazy in my mind. I don't even remember how some characters came into being. It's just like they needed to exist somehow and, now, they've become way too important to ever go back to not existing.
If you have more questions about the creative process, don't hesitate to ask!
Now, onto the question.
Q: How is Lucy and Alistair's relationship going to unfold?
A: Well, it's a bit complicated. At first, I didn't think of them that way, since, as you all know, Lucy is very childish and Alistair acts in a much more mature way. Plus, she's underage right now and I'm not very fond of a big age difference (though Alistair is a 25-year-old man). They didn't seem like a very romantic couple, they had great chemistry but it almost seemed like a father-daughter or a sibling bond. I remember one comment in the first chapter that thought that Alistair was Lucy's grandfather! I was... shocked.
But, since then, I've thought it over in my head. The characters won't end up together as they are but they might, if they both change and evolve enough in the course of the story. I feel like they're heavily connected to each other, whatever the future holds for them, they will be together in it, whether it be as partners or as something more. I think Lucy is the one who will change the most, she will grow up, without losing her signature sparkle, and become someone Alistair can rely on and trust as a responsible partner. Their destinies very much complement each other, they feel perfect together for many reasons because I think they bring out the best in each other. Alistair has never been so chill without Lucy, trust me, he was... a lot when he was younger. As for Lucy, well, Alistair's common sense is sometimes pretty useful.
They feel like rivers that are meant to collide, so, saying that they might have a romantic relationship by the end of the story might be accurate, but when Lucy is not underage, please, right now, it would just feel gross.
Q: Why do you have such a preference for David? Does he have any prototype or something like that?
A: Yeah... I've made it clear of my preference for David. Let me explain why. I think David is a character very close to Lucy in terms of energy. They both represent some kind of never-ending hope for me, something that can't be extinguished, like the incarnation of resilience and happiness, the hope that things will get better, the strength to go forward, stronger and without ever giving up. While Lucy is more like youthful exuberance, David would be assured optimism, more mature (calculating too), and calm than Lucy but still very full of life. That's what they both represent to me: life, an unquenchable force that is bound to always go back up, no matter how many times they go down. The choice to see the light and the good in what has been spoiled and destroyed. They're different yet very similar. David has a darker side, capable of atrocities driven by vengeance, while Lucy is very secretive.
They seem like such important characters to me, but it's difficult to fully express my ideas in words right now, you'll have to see what ideas they represent throughout the story.
David has a very fun personality to play with, he has great interactions with most people he meets, cool power, an amazing past that I can't wait to explore, and also one of the cutest love stories of my book (one that is not a tragedy). This makes me very attached to him since I can explore different ways of loving someone, trying to figure out how to render a real relationship. I also love his appearance, well, not right now, but I'll explain it more later since it's a major spoiler.
Q: Who are your favorite authors and classical works? Which one has the greatest influence on your writing style?
A: I'm a very polyvalent person when it comes to reading, I try to read as much as I can in as many different genres as possible, though I still have so much more to discover! Since I'm French, I'm taking a lot of inspiration from the works of the XIXth century, Victor Hugo, one of my favorites, Emile Zola, Honoré de Balzac, Flaubert... I also love poets, Rimbaud, Baudelaire, Verlaine, Gautier... There are just so many that are very interesting to study. I've tried to read as many things as I could from them. I feel like I want to explore how every author who was able to write a masterpiece was able to do it, try to discover what their book is about, and how they write it. I love XVIIIth century philosophers and writers, Choderlos de Laclos, Voltaire, Rousseau, Montesquieu, or playwriters from the XVIIth century like Molière, Racine, Corneille, La Fontaine, La Bruyère, and many more... I kinda feel like I'm just making a list right now. You could probably research every prominent French author, there is a good chance I've read their work or at least heard of them. I could also mention Camus, Proust... This is never-ending. I love the works of Plato and ancient Greek philosophers. Mythology is just such a limitless source of inspiration.
Of course, I know and love mystery books like Sherlock Holmes or Agatha Christie's books.
I should also probably mention that I have loved and devoured the Anne of Green Gables series and it is today part of my favorite books.
I've read a few English authors, like Jane Austen, the Brontë sisters, Dickens, Oscar Wilde, and Shakespeare. I loved Jane Eyre, it's still very engraved in my mind. Daphne du Maurier's book Rebecca is also... very vivid in my memory. I loved it, though I hope I don't turn out like that Rebecca. I've also watched the movie and it was very disturbing to hear your name being shouted by several people. Is this what celebrity feels like?
I've also explored a few Russian authors, like Dostoïveski or Tolstoï, with Anna Karenina or the Brothers Karamazov.
I'm also a huge fantasy fan. I've read the Lord of the Rings books, the Harry Potter books... I've read the Percy Jackson books and have tried to read more recent fantasy works like The Cruel Prince. I love exploring new worlds and, when I was a child, I was very adamant about fairies, I thought that, if I tried hard enough, I might become one myself. Sadly, it never worked. I also love some French fantasy books, like Les Chevaliers d'Emeraude (well, it's Quebecois but, you get the point) or the books written by the amazing yet sadly deceased Pierre Bottero, they're amazing. I've also tried comics too, though this is not my strongest suit.
I wouldn't be able to say what my greatest influence is. I like to think that I'm going for a mix of both worlds, the beauty of the language used by classical works with the imagination of the fantasy books I've read. I hope to succeed, hopefully.
Q: What is your favorite anime, movie and music?
A: That's a tough question! I love One Piece and have read all chapters currently available, I'm also a fan of Attack on Titan, you know, blood, well-thought plot twists, and mysteries, this was made for me. In general, I try to read as many as possible. I know the most prominent ones. Jujutsu Kaisen for example, though I'm not up to date at all, I love the deaths! The Promised Neverland was great (the manga, not the anime) or Hell's Paradise, the looks of it are very cool. Oshi no Ko is great right now though a little worrying (I'm talking about the relationship between the two main characters). I also love the angst of Madoka Magica.
As for music, same thing here, I listen to a little bit of everything or at least I think I do. I love Imagine Dragons' songs, they're always some of my favorites. I listen to popular songs because I don't have much of a personality.
My favorite movie, now... I don't know at all. I've watched a few movies but I'm no expert at all. I loved Everything Everywhere All At Once, it was great, so colorful, and moving too! If you have recommendations.
I think that's all! I hope I haven't forgotten anything, once again, thank you for your questions! I hope you'll keep on reading Chronicles of Mystery to uncover even more mysteries and secrets, I have plenty in store. If you still have questions, I can edit this chapter and add them later on. Thank you for participating and have an amazing day!
