~| Day 20A: Comet |~

AU: Son of Science

Context: When Sabre was a kid, the Professor would talk about the stars with him, since his room was part of the observatory and he showed interest in them.

Sorry this one's a few hours late, I lost track of time last night and stayed up too late to write my prompt before going to bed =v='

[3rd Person POV]

Professor Red looked through the observatory's massive telescope, turning to the desk next to him every so often to write things down in a notebook.

He hadn't noticed that Sabre had come out of his room and up to him until the young child tugged on his labcoat. He looked down and saw Sabre staring up at him with a smile.

"Sabre? It's the middle of the night, what are you doing up?" The Professor asks, smiling. As Sabre lets go of his coat, he kneels down to his son's height.

"Well, I couldn't sleep so I was looking at the stars, and I saw something cool!" The little boy says, beaming. "It was bright and it was purple and blue and the middle was white, and it was like a wide arch, and it went across the sky! It was so cool! Do you know what that was?"

"Looks like you saw the comet I've been studying." The Professor chuckles. "A comet is ice and dust that gathers in space and floats around, and when it gets close to the sun, we can see it moving as it passes by our planet, burning up."

"Wait, it was burning?" Sabre asks. "But that means it's gone now..."

"Maybe it is, maybe it isn't. These things are resilient and some come back every so often. And the materials it was made of that burned away turned into new things. Things that could help other things form in space. Who knows? Maybe it could become a real star."

"Really...?"

"There's a possibility! Now, there's something cool about the comet we both just saw. C'mere..."

The Professor carefully grabs Sabre and holds him, standing up and bringing him over to the telescope.

"Look through here."

Sabre leans and looks into it, instantly lighting up.

"I can see the stars! They look closer!"

"That's not all you can see. Wait a moment, keep looking."

For a while, there's silence as the two wait for something to happen. Then, the night sky overhead seems to light up, and the Professor looks through the glass ceiling of the room to see many more comets passing by. He looks back to his son as Sabre gasps, seeing the parade of celestial objects.

"It has friends!" He exclaims.

The Professor laughs a little, glad he's enjoying the experience.

It may be a little harder to record the event now, but it's worth it.
