02: early morning war

mingi is the trans character here btw

Mingi awakes with a grunt, hating how dry his throat feels. He briefly opens his eyes before quickly shutting them once more, fucking detesting the stubborn early morning sunlight shining through the blinds.

He groans as he buries his head into his pillow, wanting just a couple more moments of quiet and peace.

The phone on the nightstand decides to ping that very second, an annoying notification that soon triples as new messages decide to pop in.

Mingi hisses in irritation, hating it the most when his mornings are disrupted like this.

He grumbles and snatches the device off the table, tiredly rubbing the crust out of his eyes.

Mingi throws his phone to the side and shoves his feet into his fluffy pikachu slippers. San got it for him as a birthday gift last year as a joke due to how 'dynamic' and 'spunky' his personality can be (San's words, not his), but Mingi treasured the gift all the same, knowing how San loves that.

Lethargic as fuck, Mingi slithers past his bedroom door and into the bathroom, mind too foggy to pay attention to how silent it is around here.

He pulls off his shirt, relieved at the body he sees in the mirror even though he knows he's looked like this for a while now. But Mingi doesn't think he can get used to it just yet, fearing he'll be back to square one when he wakes up one day.

Fatigued eyes reflect back at him, slanted and lined with dark bags underneath. His normally plump lips are now pale and pulled into his teeth in contemplation. Some stubble shadows his sharp jaw, and Mingi signs, not looking forward to this part of his day.

Like clockwork, he brushes his teeth, then shaves, then pulls off his sweatpants and boxers, looking away from the mirror right then.

Mingi then showers, borderline scalding water washing over him in the process. But that's the way Mingi likes it.

By the time he steps out of the shower, steam topples out the curtains like a tsunami of hell, and Mingi haphazardly rubs his dark hair dry with a towel, not caring about how pink his skin probably looks by now. Oh well.

Wrapping another larger towel around his middle, he begins his ever fulfilling quest of making breakfast for himself. Eggs and toast, or just plain cereal.

Mingi's feeling a little more refreshed today, so he decides he's gonna make more than enough eggs and toast just in case San wants some. And he always does.

So, he heads down the corridor that leads to the living room, unabashed about how exposed he is right now. His aunt's more than used to his morning schedule by now, and she hasn't brought any of those otherwordly creatures over for a while.

Mingi shudders as he recollects the clingy half-dryad that left dirt everywhere she went, and the greedy gnome that gobbled down his favourite brand of chocolate bears in the middle of the night at 3AM. The family sized one.

That one had left Mingi mad at his aunt for many, many days.

The kitchen's right next to the living room, and then he's walking in, passing right by a long haired blond at the table drinking something from a cup.

A long haired blond at the table drinking something from a cup.

Mingi halts in his tracks, feeling a pair of eyes piercing into the back of his skull. Oh fuck no.

"...Hello?" The person speaks, their voice undoubtedly male. Mingi freezes, his heart in his throat.

This can't be happening.

"I assume you have just finished a bath. How it is, by the way? Gia said bathing's nothing to worry about, but I'm still a little nervous," the guy continues, and Mingi's jaw tightens, his morning officially ruined.

He feels so self-conscious, not to mention incredibly mad his aunt omitted to tell him she'd brought in another dreaded otherwordly yet again. His fists clench at his sides.

"...Are you okay -- "

"Stop talking," Mingi snaps, voice rougher than he'd like. He turns around, ready to glare daggers at the male only for his plan to fall short at what he sees.

Like he'd guessed, the otherwordly before him is blond, his hair spilling over his frame in loose waves. His skin is pale -- almost luminescent, his ears pointed at the ends, which means he's most likely an elf. But what catches Mingi the most off-guard are his eyes, a bright and vibrant green like the rarest gem.

The elf's expression is gentle as he regards Mingi, albeit a little curious, and Mingi wants to slap himself hard for so obviously staring at the other male.

"What are you looking at?" Mingi accuses as a way to gain control of the situation.

The elf tilts his head, green eyes narrowing ever so slightly. "I think I should be asking you that. You seemed quite...taken with my features."

Mingi's cheeks throb with heat, feeling even more exposed when the elf looks like he's smirking. "Shut the hell up."

It's then he notices the elf is wearing one of his favourite hoodies. He wants to scream.

On cue his aunt Gia saunters in, her pyjamas as colourful as her hair. She grins at the red-hot glare Mingi shoots her. "Good morning, my dearest nephew."

Mingi folds his arms across his bare chest, feeling cornered especially with how intently that darned elf is watching him now. And when he feels cornerned, he gets a little more temperamental, acts a little more like a dick.

"The fuck is he doing here?" He questions his aunt.

"Oh, I must've forgotten myself. Mingi, this is Yunho," the woman introduces the both of them. "Jeong Yunho, the eldest prince of the northern Starlight kingdom."

Mingi wants to scoff, but then notices how 'Prince Yunho' looks down right at that second, appearing a bit bothered by the title. But Mingi doesn't give two craps.

"You should've told me you were bringing another one," Mingi draws closer to whisper-yell into his aunt's ears.

"It was a last minute thing," Gia whisper-yells back, before patting his back. "He's just gonna stay with us for a while."

"How long?"

"However long it takes."

"No way." Mingi groans out loud, despising this morning all the more. For the first time ever, he's actually looking forward to going to school today so he won't have to look at this elf's face any longer.

"Excuse me, Gia," 'Prince Yunho' speaks right then. "This tea is quite delicious, and reminds me very much of the silver root tea that I usually take before I sleep back at home. Would you kindly make me another?"

At this, Gia smiles, all warm and excited someone likes her tea when Mingi usually avoids it like the plague. "Of course, prince Yunho."

"Just 'Yunho' will be fine, thank you."

"Of course, anything you want, dear," Mingi's aunt answers, and Mingi kinda wants to throw up.

"I'm going to my room," he says.

"You haven't taken breakfast yet, right? Eggs and toast? I'll make some for you and San, since he'll probably want some."

"...Whatever," Mingi says, and his aunt grins as she knows the teen has now begrudgingly accepted that an elf is going to be living with them for now.

San is wide and bright-eyed as he regards Yunho's form for the hundredth time that morning, nothing but wonder on his face. Mingi's known the shorter male for as long as he can remember -- since they'd been little kids, even --  and as a result San knows all about his aunt's 'unique' job. That still doesn't stop the teen from marvelling at seeing an otherwordly, especially an actual elf prince.

"You're moon-touched, right?" San asks as he nibbles on some toast, a polite eater like always. "Is that why your hair's so silvery? I read that elves usually don't have hair as blond as yours. It's so...majestic."

"Yes, I am moon-touched," Yunho says, seeming pleased San's so interested in him. Mingi, on the other hand, doesn't give him the satisfaction of sparing him a glance, shoving scrambled eggs down his throat as he scrolls through his phone. "A crescent also shows up on my left wrist as soon as the moonlight hits my arm."

San's eyes get even wider. "That's so cool."

"San, hurry up," Mingi begs, already having gulfed down the remainder his food. He pretends he doesn't notice how Yunho frowns at his erratic eating style, but he also doesn't give a fuck. "We gotta head to school soon."

"I can't believe my dear nephew's excited to go to school," his aunt comments from the kitchen, in the midst of making more tea for Yunho and a coffee for herself. "Is this the start of a new era?"

"Yeah, well, a certain someone's now clogging the atmosphere with their unwanted presence, so I don't feel particularly comfortable at the moment," Mingi spits, and Yunho's face falls.

"Mingi," San gasps, lightly kicking his shin. Apologize, his eyes practically scream.

'What? No way,' Mingi mouths, snatching up his plate and fork and entering the kitchen. He can feel his aunt's glare but he ignores her, because honestly she deserves it for bringing another otherwordly creature here without even giving him a heads up.

Yunho's looking right at him when Mingi exits the kitchen, his previous calm expression tighter and more strained. He looks as irritated as a pampered elven royal can look, all sulky and shit.

Mingi won't say he feels bad, but getting a rise out of the elf isn't as satisfying as he'd hoped it'd be. He looks away, not in the mood to deal with this today.

San's already finished with his meal, his bag zipped up and ready to go. His face is apologetic, but the elven prince doesn't acknowledge him. He just keeps glowering at Mingi.

"Elves are like, the worst people to make enemies of, Mingi," San's saying as they leave the house. He gets on his bicycle while Mingi unlatches his from the garage. "They can actually use magic."

"And he's currently living under our roof, eating our food and sleeping in one of our rooms," Mingi replies, positioning himself on his bike. "I doubt he'd do anything."

"Yeah, I guess. But he seems nice," San says, chewing his lip. "I just don't want him getting in trouble."

Mingi's eyes bulge. "What about me? Aren't I your best friend?"

"You're kind of the troublemaker here, Mingi. And you know how much it sucks when others are mean to us," San answers. He looks at the taller, then starts pedaling away.

Mingi's mood worsens even more than before, mostly because they both know that San's right.

"Wait up," he calls out, following after the shorter male. Blond hair and emerald green eyes linger on his mind, but he soon wills the image away.
