Who Is the Holy Ghost?
The Holy Ghost (also known as the Holy Spirit) is the part of God that is most familiar to Christians outside of Jesus Christ. That is because He is the part that is most active. Like Jesus dwelt among men and the Father among Israel, the Holy Spirit dwells among Christians today. Before Jesus ascended into heaven, the Holy Spirit indwell people for a temporary time, but now, the Holy Ghost literally lives inside the people that trust Jesus Christ as Savior.
Acts 1:8 - But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.
Acts 2:38 - Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.
1 Corinthians 6:19 - What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?
So, when a person gets saved, the Holy Ghost lives in them.
Now, the Holy Ghost is not a force or a power or some mystical spirit. The Holy Ghost is just as much a person as you or me, with emotions, desires, and actions.
Ephesians 4:30 - And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption.
Romans 8:26 - Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.
John 14:26 - But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.
The Holy Ghost has two main jobs. The first is to convict the unsaved to become Christians. The Holy Ghost will lay on people's hearts to do things, such as go to church or maybe go somewhere, leading them to a tract or sermon that will get them saved. They may even convict the soul of the person, saying they are not saved, they are a sinner, and that only Jesus can take them to heaven. The second job of the Holy Ghost is to help the Christian grow and serve God to their best ability. The Holy Ghost will point out things in our life that we need to change or will help us make wise decisions about college or our future career or spouse. Sometimes the Holy Ghost will even tell us that something is not safe or that you should not do something.
John 16:8-9 - And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: Of sin, because they believe not on me;
Galatians 5:22-23 - But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.
