Prophecies in the Bible (3)

Something, I think, a lot of us don't think about when we read the Bible, especially when we first start taking the things of God seriously, is that the Bible was not written all at once. This book was written over thousands of years, God revealing His will and plans little by little because we could only handle certain things at certain times. With this in mind, the story of Jesus Christ throughout the Bible as a whole makes perfect sense, especially in the area of prophecy.

Hundreds, if not a thousand, years before Christ was born, many prophecies were made about His physical circumstances, what would happen to Him, and His characteristics as a person, all of which have come true with alarming accuracy. There are so many things that have come true accurately, that it would literally be impossible for the Bible to be not true, and this many things also come true.

To start, let's look at Christ's beginnings. The Bible said He would be born of a virgin.

Isaiah 7:14 -Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.

Matthew 1:18 - Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost.

Mathew 1:22-23 - Now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying,Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.

The Bible said He would be born in Bethlehem.

Micah 5:2 - But thou, Bethlehem Ephratah, though thou be little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of thee shall he come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting.

Matthew 2:1 - Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judaea in the days of Herod the king, behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem,

The Bible said He would for a time be in Egypt and return to Israel.

Hosea 11:1 - When Israel was a child, then I loved him, and called my son out of Egypt.

Matthew 2:14-15 - When he arose, he took the young child and his mother by night, and departed into Egypt: And was there until the death of Herod: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, Out of Egypt have I called my son.

The Bible says He would come from the tribe of Judah.

Genesis 49:10 - The sceptre shall not depart from Judah, nor a lawgiver from between his feet, until Shiloh come; and unto him shall the gathering of the people be.

Decades later Bible said He would have the royal blood of David in Him, David is a part of the line of Judah.

Isaiah 9:7 - Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even for ever. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will perform this.

Matthew 1:17 - So all the generations from Abraham to David are fourteen generations; and from David until the carrying away into Babylon are fourteen generations; and from the carrying away into Babylon unto Christ are fourteen generations.

So, Jesus's ministry hasn't even really begun, and already four prophecies have been fulfilled. (And this is after I've cut some out because there are more, I just don't think there would be time to cover them all as fast as I would like.) That's a 3.125 % chance of happening at the most. The odds of these things happening actually get even more unlikely.

Now, let's talk about the life of Jesus Christ. The Bible says He would be hated.

Isaiah 53:3 - He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not.

John 8:59 - Then took they up stones to cast at him: but Jesus hid himself, and went out of the temple, going through the midst of them, and so passed by.

The Bible says Jesus would be called God.

Isaiah 9:6 - For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.

The Bible says Jesus would be a prophet from Israel, but that would be similar to the Levites but from a different branch in Israel. They also said He would be like Moses. Moses brought the old covenant (testament), showing how to live for God in a then new era, while Jesus brought the new covenant (testament) showing how to live for God in a new era.

Deuteronomy 18:15 - The Lord thy God will raise up unto thee a Prophet from the midst of thee, of thy brethren, like unto me; unto him ye shall hearken;

Deuteronomy 18:18-19 - I will raise them up a Prophet from among their brethren, like unto thee, and will put my words in his mouth; and he shall speak unto them all that I shall command him. And it shall come to pass, that whosoever will not hearken unto my words which he shall speak in my name, I will require it of him.

Acts 3:22 - For Moses truly said unto the fathers, A prophet shall the Lord your God raise up unto you of your brethren, like unto me; him shall ye hear in all things whatsoever he shall say unto you.

Jesus would have someone go before Him to call people to Him.

Isaiah 20:3 - The voice of him that crieth in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make straight in the desert a highway for our God.

John 1:3 - He said, I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness, Make straight the way of the Lord, as said the prophet Esaias.

The Bible said Jesus would ride into Jerusalem on a donkey's colt.

Zechariah 9:9 - Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion; shout, O daughter of Jerusalem: behold, thy King cometh unto thee: he is just, and having salvation; lowly, and riding upon an ass, and upon a colt the foal of an ass.

Matthew 21:7 - And brought the ass, and the colt, and put on them their clothes, and they set him thereon.

So, that's five more. Meaning about another 3% chance of that happening. Together, the chance of all ten prophecies happening is only 00.09765625% chance. That's about less than 0 chance of that happening, yet it did!

Finally, there are prophecies about the death of Christ.

First, that Jesus would die at.

Isaiah 53:8 - He was taken from prison and from judgment: and who shall declare his generation? for he was cut off out of the land of the living: for the transgression of my people was he stricken.

That He would die for our sins.

Isaiah 53:5 - But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.

That He would die in a manner of crucifixion

Psalm 22:16 - For dogs have compassed me: the assembly of the wicked have inclosed me: they pierced my hands and my feet."

That He would not have one bone broken.

Psalm 34:20 - He keepeth all his bones: not one of them is broken.

John 19:33 - But when they came to Jesus, and saw that he was dead already, they brake not his legs:

John 19:36 - For these things were done, that the scripture should be fulfilled, A bone of him shall not be broken.

That Jesus would be sold for thirty pieces of silver.

Zechariah 11:12-13 - And I said unto them, If ye think good, give me my price; and if not, forbear. So they weighed for my price thirty pieces of silver. And the Lord said unto me, Cast it unto the potter: a goodly price that I was prised at of them. And I took the thirty pieces of silver, and cast them to the potter in the house of the Lord.

Matthew 26:14-16 - Then one of the twelve, called Judas Iscariot, went unto the chief priests,And said unto them, What will ye give me, and I will deliver him unto you? And they covenanted with him for thirty pieces of silver. And from that time he sought opportunity to betray him.

So, again, with 3% chance of this happening, times the less than 1 percent chance mentioned earlier makes it about 00.003051757% chance of happening. Pretty unlikely if you ask me.

Unless the Bible was written by Someone who would mysteriously know the future.

Personally, if I can trust the Bible to be true when there is literally 0.0003% chance of it happening at best, I think it's pretty safe to trust in every other area of life.
