Meditation in the Bible

Something mentioned in the Bible, that also may be easily misunderstood, is the idea of meditation. Many religions in the world practice meditation. Some may say meditation has to do with clearing your mind, becoming one with the universe/nature, or focusing on an object in nature. Therefore, some non-Christians will read the Bible, see the word meditation, and assume that the Bible supports this idea.

The idea of meditation from other religions is not the same as Christian meditation though.

Meditation in the Bible does have to do with focusing our thoughts, but instead of focusing our thoughts on emptying our minds or on nature, we are to focus them on the Word of God or even God Himself.

Psalms 1:2 - But his delight [is] in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.

Psalms 119:15- I will meditate in thy precepts, and have respect unto thy ways.

Psalm 119:97 - MEM. O how love I thy law! it [is] my meditation all the day.

Psalm 119:99 - I have more understanding than all my teachers: for thy testimonies are my meditation.

To meditate on the law of God is to spend our time thinking about it and what it says. We should read the Bible and memorize it, but Christians should also take time to think deeply about what it means. Meditating is about thinking deeply and pondering as opposed to trying to enter a new state of mind.

Psalm 19:4 - - Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O LORD, my strength, and my redeemer.

Isaiah 26:3 - - Thou wilt keep [him] in perfect peace, [whose] mind [is] stayed [on thee]: because he trusteth in thee.

This is an important idea to understand, as some non-Christians may come to Christians and try to say the Bible talks about meditation the same way many other religions do.
