Evolution in the Bible

Evolution is something that is greatly believed and discussed in many nations in the world, especially the west. It is important for many Christians to understand it and if it is compatible with the Bible, since it is so widespread.

Most of you probably know what evolution is, but to be clear, evolution is living creatures of a period of time slowly changing into another type of living creature by giving birth to offspring that is slightly more advanced. This mainly is the belief that creation started with simple creatures and slowly evolved into more complex ones over millions of years as opposed to God creating the universe in six days.

Now, the scientific for or against evolution will not be discussed today, though perhaps at a later date. This will mostly focus on if it is compatible with the Bible.

The Bible says that God created the earth in six days by speaking. He said what He wanted created and it appeared.

Genesis 1:3-5 - And God said, Let there be light: and there was light. And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness. And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day.

1:20-21 - And God said, Let the waters bring forth abundantly the moving creature that hath life, and fowl that may fly above the earth in the open firmament of heaven. And God created great whales, and every living creature that moveth, which the waters brought forth abundantly, after their kind, and every winged fowl after his kind: and God saw that it was good.

1:24-25 - And God said, Let the earth bring forth the living creature after his kind, cattle, and creeping thing, and beast of the earth after his kind: and it was so. And God made the beast of the earth after his kind, and cattle after their kind, and every thing that creepeth upon the earth after his kind: and God saw that it was good.

So, God spoke, the world was created. As you can see, God spoke and immediately these creatures came into existence from the dirt and water. There is no hinting of it happening slowly over time, but an instantaneous process.

Another thing to note is that these creatures were "good." There was no sin in them. Since death is only caused by sin, and millions of years of birth and death is required for the process of evolution, the idea of sinless creatures evolving over millions of years through birth and death processes and still somehow being perfectly pure and sinless is contradictory.

Now, some Christians will say that the term "day" technically could mean "age" because of the Hebrew words numerous meanings. They also point to a verse in the New Testament.

2 Peter 3:8 - But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.

While I can see why some Christians who experience confusion over the matter wish to settle it and go to this theory, I think it is important to point out is major flaws. First, the Bible clearly says that a day was "evening and morning" in the same passage. Genesis 1:5 says "And the evening and the morning were the first day." That doesn't leave much ambiguity.

Second, the verse in Peter is talking about a totally different subject that has nothing to do with Creation. The Bible must always be interpreted in context, and 2 Peter is talking about having peace about not knowing when the end of the world will come because God has all time under His control. With all due respect, that has nothing to do with Creation whatsoever.

Also, it's important to note a person can believe in evolution and be saved, love God, and do great things for Him. But accuracy is important, and believing something that is not compatible with the Bible and that we know can not therefore be true hurts the case of Christianity and can present it as weak. In the days of Jesus, the Roman scientist did believe in something very similar to evolution, and the people were warned against it in the Bible.

1 Timothy 6:20 - O Timothy, keep that which is committed to thy trust, avoiding profane and vain babblings, and oppositions of science falsely so called:
