Addictions

The Bible never directly mentions smoking or drugs in the Bible, but it does lay down some very good principles to help us know how one should view them.

First, the Bible says that even if something is not a sin, if one is controlled by it or if it hurts one, then one should not be involved in it.

1 Corinthians 6:12 - All things are lawful unto me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power of any.

While smoking may technically not be a sin, it hurts us more than helps people and can easily control someone until it feels like a need. So things like smoking and drugs should be avoided.

Something the Bible does talk about a lot is alcohol. Many of the principles attributed to drinking could be applied to other things that could be considered addictions. It never condemns drinking as a sin, but makes it very clear that drunkenness is, as well as that those that think they can control alcohol are only fooling themselves. It also says that the drunk can not be filled with the Holy Spirit.

Isaiah 5:11 - Woe unto them that rise up early in the morning, [that] they may follow strong drink; that continue until night, [till] wine inflame them!

Romans 13:13 - Let us walk honestly, as in the day; not in rioting and drunkenness, not in chambering and wantonness, not in strife and envying.

Proverbs 20:1 - Wine [is] a mocker, strong drink [is] raging: and whosoever is deceived thereby is not wise.

Proverbs 23:20 - Be not among winebibbers; among riotous eaters of flesh:

Ephesians 5:18 - And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit;

The Bible also says that drink a lot often commit other sins while under the influence, something that also happens with smokers and drug addicts. Things like theft, lusts, and murders can be caused from, because, or under the influence of alcohol, drugs, or tobacco.

Proverbs 23:29-35 - Who hath woe? who hath sorrow? who hath contentions? who hath babbling? who hath wounds without cause? who hath redness of eyes?They that tarry long at the wine; they that go to seek mixed wine. Look not thou upon the wine when it is red, when it giveth his colour in the cup, when it moveth itself aright. At the last it biteth like a serpent, and stingeth like an adder. Thine eyes shall behold strange women, and thine heart shall utter perverse things. Yea, thou shalt be as he that lieth down in the midst of the sea, or as he that lieth upon the top of a mast. They have stricken me, shalt thou say, and I was not sick; they have beaten me, and I felt it not: when shall I awake? I will seek it yet again.
