Warning Sign Part 2
Jonny 's POV
Guy and I walked into our dressing room to see Y/N with her back turned towards us, grabbing all of Chris' possessions and hastily stuffing them in his rucksack. She hadn't noticed our presence, or Will's, who has just walked into the room. Neither of us knew what to say to her really.
I mean, her boyfriend just fell off stage and broke his leg badly and now she's going to be rushed off to hospital with him any minute, not knowing what to expect. But she needed to be reassured that everything will be ok... Because right now it doesn't seem like it would be. I decided to make our presence known.
"Y/N Are you alright?" She froze at the sound of my voice before slowly turning around to reveal her red eyes and tear stained face, a choked sob escaping her mouth. My heart shattered and I found myself rushing forward and wrapping my arms around her small frame. Every sob shook her frame violently as she showed just how scared she was. I gently lifted her chin to meet her gaze.
"Shhhh, everything's fine, Y/N..... Everything's gonna be ok" I whispered, trying to convince myself also...
"Is it though?" She choked, running a hand through her blonde hair, sniffling. "C'mon Jon...you saw the state he's in... And his leg...."
"Hey, this is Chris we're talking about... He's done worse things" Will piped up, a little humour lacing his voice. I stifled a laugh, as he was right. Chris had done some stupid things in the past and had never been badly injured... Until tonight. I Couldn't help but worry about him. Y/N giggled a bit too. Suddenly a paramedic entered.
"Right, we have him stabilized for the journey and he's ready to go." She turned to Y/N. "Have you gathered all of his essentials?"
"Yes, I think I've got everything covered". The paramedic nodded.
"So who will be traveling in the ambulance with him?" She inquired, her gaze floating between the four of us. Will gently shoved Y/N in her direction.
"We'll catch a taxi to the hospital, you go with your man" he told her, earning a tight hug from her before she turned and exited the room with the paramedic. The three of us gathered our belongings and took them back to the tour bus before calling a taxi and following Chris and Y/N to the hospital.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Y/N's POV:
I followed the paramedic outside to the ambulance and jumped in the back and sat beside Chris' bedside. He still looked extremely pale with pain written on his features but at least he had calmed down by now. He had managed to find my hand and was holding it gently in his. His eyes were dull and half closed by the bright light inside the ambulance. Overall he stayed unusually quiet. This only worried me more.
"We've given him a dose of strong pain killers and a mild sedative to take his mind off the pain and keep him calm" one of the paramedics explained. "He might be a bit out of it for a while, at least until your ordeal is over" she added, throwing a sad smile in Chris' direction. I nodded in agreement, now knowing why he was behaving so out of character.
We arrived at the hospital in about 15 minutes and We were taken to A&E department. Chris was wheeled in on the stretcher he was strapped to before being placed on a bed. A nurse had just left to fetch a doctor and we were now alone. He turned his head to look at me, eyes full of sorrow, reflecting a storm of emotions. I stroked his cheek soothingly, causing him to sigh deeply.
"I'm so sorry... you don't deserve this" He whimpered, directing his gaze to the floor. My heart nearly broke in two, seeing him so upset .
"Hey, it's ok... Everything's going to be fine. Me , the lads and everyone will help you through this ... You're not gonna go through this alone okay?" I soothed, running my hand up and down his arm. He looked up and met my eyes again. His sapphire gaze now showed a glimmer of hope . He squeezed my hand in gratitude. At that moment, a short, dark haired woman in a white surgeon's coat entered. She had a smile plastered to her face.
"Hello, my name's Dr Smith, I will be treating you today Mr Martin, we'll decide how we can help you recover ok?" She explained, her gaze switching between Chris and me the whole time. A few nurses entered the room, holding equipment and tools ready.
"Would you like Miss...." She paused, gesturing for my surname.
"Evans" I answered for her.
"Evans to stay for the examination, Mr Martin?" She asked, gazing down at Chris. His questioning gaze flickered back to me, worry clear in his eyes. I nodded and squeezed his hand reassuringly, silently telling him I didn't mind staying.
"Yes please" he answered quietly, a faint smile playing on his lips. The doctor smiled back at him.
"Very well, let's have a look at this leg shall we?". She stepped forward towards him and lifted the quilt that covered his legs to reveal his bruised, deformed leg encased in the bright orange splint. Her face showed a hint of surprise.
"The paramedics didn't remove your shoes?" She questioned, shaking her head in disbelief. She was referring to the teal coloured Nike Air Jordans on his feet, one of the pairs Moses had designed for him.
"Is that a bad thing?" Chris asked, voice wavering.
"Yes, as your ankle has swollen so much, your shoe could restrict the blood flow to your foot" she explained, turning to the nurses. "I'm afraid we'll have to cut your shoe off in order to remove It without too much discomfort " she stated.
"That's fine, go ahead " he said. Poor Chris, first he had his favourite trousers cut and now his favourite pair of trainers ruined. But I guess he could always buy new ones. The nurses took his left shoe off before cutting the other with a casting saw, which literally cut the shoe in half and resulting in a painless removal.
The doctor then proceeded to examine his leg, prodding certain tender areas which caused Chris to wince or jump violently, fighting the urge to cry out in pain. His reaction was enough to suggest the severity of the break. After a while, the doctor focused her gaze on us.
"How did this happen?" She asked curiously. I flicked my gaze towards Chris, encouraging him to explain.
"It was all a blur really" Chris admitted. "It had been raining for most of the day but the show wasn't cancelled. The stage was wet and slippery... during the climax of a song, I ran down the run way but when I turned mid air, I slipped and lost my balance so I fell backwards over the edge."
"It must've been at least 10 foot high drop" I added .
"I winded myself when I hit the ground and thought I was fine until I tried to move, that's when I felt the sharpest, most searing pain in my leg and knew something was wrong... I've probably landed directly on it for it to be so mangled " he confessed. The doctor nodded in agreement.
"I believe that the combination of the speed you were running at and your body weight has caused this... The abnormal pressure causing the breakage. I can confirm that you have definitely broken a few bones in your leg, but an X Ray will enable us to see which bones exactly " she said.
Chris was then wheeled on the bed into a dark room where he was told to stay still and I was told to stand behind a radioactive protected screen. The X Ray lasted a few minutes before We were wheeled back to the previous room where we waited for the results. A while later, a few soft knocks sounded on the door. I got up from my chair, relief flooding over me when I opened it to see Phil, Jonny, Guy and Will all stood there wearing worried expressions which softened immediately upon seeing me. They all encircled me in a hug. Chris had now spotted them too.
"Hey guys!" He welcomed them , smiling his first proper smile in ages. They all said hello and fetched some chairs and plonked themselves down beside him. We talked and the tension that was here earlier had eased by now. Chris had perked up , despite still being in a lot of pain. But overall he was in a better mood and seemed more like himself, now that his friends were here.
After our short reunion, we found ourselves silenced when the doctor walked in again. Her face was set in a worried frown. I held my breath in anticipation to see what the outcome would be.
"I have good news and bad news." She addressed all of us. "The good news being The X Ray results have come back and no obvious tendons or ligaments are torn. The bad news being that you've broken 5 ankle bones and snapped both your fibula and tibula. Therefore I'm afraid you'll need metal plates to stabilise the bones. You'll require surgery to secure them" she explained
"Surgery?!" Chris squeaked. He glanced uncertainly between us all, searching our faces for reassurance. I swallowed the lump in my throat.
"Yes, the surgeons will be ready for you in about 30 minutes time, it's important that you're treated as quickly as possible... Until then you can stay here with your friends. If any of you have any questions just come and find me ok?" She added, before exiting the room and leaving us in shocked silence.
"Surgery..." Chris mumbled, a distant look forming in his eyes. None of us knew what to say to comfort him. After a while, I glanced up and met Jonny's eyes.
"You know, You'll beep going through the metal detectors at the airports now". He stated randomly, breaking all tension in the room and causing an up roar of laughter, Chris included. He always made everyone feel better, even in situations like this.
"Yeah, I supposed so" Chris chuckled. "But what about the rest of the tour? We can't just cancel it!"
"We'll work something out " Phil said. "The important thing is that your fighting fit and healthy and that you recover first" he added, smiling at Chris' dedication.
We sat chatting for a while before the medical team came to take Chris to theatre. Fear suddenly flashed in his eyes, realisation about what was happening kicking in. I leant over him and kiss his lips softly, grasping his hand gently.
"Don't Panic" I whispered, which earned myself a cheeky grin in return. We all walked down the corridors with him being wheeled before we said our goodbyes.
"See you soon" he called, as he was wheeled through beyond public access, causing us all to laugh at the pun. Once he was out of sight, I turned back to the others, my happy vibe crumbling. Will enclosed his arms around me in a tight hug as I sniffled into his chest.
Please God, please let him be alright.
-------------------------------------------------------
Chris' POV:
I could hear some foreign noises sounding in the back of my brain, beeping, humming, buzzing. No it's not my tinnitus- although that's always there I guess... Whatever the noises were, they were loud enough to wake me up.
I was blinded by a bright light when I tried to open my eyes, causing them to burn. I tried again, this time opening them slowly and was able to keep them open. My vision was blurred but after blinking a few times it focused.
I lifted my head slightly and realised that I was in the recovery area in hospital, after having surgery on my broken leg- speaking of which, it was throbbing, sharp pain shooting around with every pulse. Jesus it hurts... A white plaster cast had been wrapped around it to keep everything in place while it heals... Great.
I also noticed the needles sticking out of my hands and arms, IV lines and a heart rate monitor- so that was what caused the beeping !
A nurse looked over in my direction and smiled before coming over.
"Ahhhhh, you're awake! How do you feel?" She asked, checking the machines and writing down records.
"Not great to be honest " I admitted, coughing to clear my dry and scratchy throat. She gazed at me sympathetically.
"We've given you more painkillers through your IV line so they should kick in soon" she said. "Does your cast feel snug and secure? It's not causing pins and needles or anything like that?".
"Yeah it feels ok... " I said uncertainly. I've never broken a bone before.
"Can you wriggle your toes?" She asked
I attempted to wiggle my toes and they moved slightly, movement causing sharp pain to run up my leg. I held back a grimace and nodded instead.
"Good, everything seems to be ok... I'll let the doctor know you're awake and then we'll take you back to your room okay?" She said. "Would you like to be sat up a bit?"
"Yes please " with that she pressed a button and I felt the bed lifting me to a sitting position, which was much better than lying flat on my back! I smiled at her gratefully and watched her leave. I reached over and grabbed a glass of water that sat on the bedside cabinet, gulping the contents thirstily.
My mind wondered to Y/N and the guys. Where were they? Were they still here or had they gone back to the hotel? I guess I'll find out in a while. I still feel so guilty about all of this, I scared the shit out of everyone and I let our fans down...
The nurse came back with the doctor and they wheeled me back to my room. They double checked everything again and made sure I was comfortable.
"We'll notify your friends that you're awake and they'll be let in to see you soon. For now though, I'd advise you to sleep the drugs off to help your recovery." I nodded in agreement, feeling my eyelids start to droop, the feeling of drowsiness overwhelming me.
The doctor left and I found my eyes closing and as I lay my head back, I let the darkness take over.

Y/N's POV:
We all sat waiting in the family room, anxious for any news on Chris. It was about 7am the next morning, They've been operating on Chris all night but we haven't heard anything. It was an understatement to say we were all exhausted. Jonny, Will and Guy especially... Jonny sat beside me, his comforting hand in mine. He had fallen asleep a few hours ago and I lowered his head to rest on my shoulder to use it as a pillow. He hasn't even stirred since.
Phil was outside on the phone to the tour planners, managers and Chris' family to inform them what had happened. Guy had managed to fall asleep curled up on a few plastic chairs, while Will was still on his feet, pacing back and forth restlessly, eyes sunken in like a zombie.
At that moment the door flew open with a loud bang, startling us all. It was Chris' doctor. We immediately shook sleep from our minds, keen to find out how he was.
"How is he? Is he ok? I asked worried.
"Well it's safe to say that you should stop worrying, as the operation to secure the plates was successful and I suspect Mr Martin to make a full recovery." She smiled. We all sighed with relief, he's going to be ok.
"So where is he now? Can we see him?" Jonny asked hopefully.
"He came around from the anaesthetic about an hour ago and is sleeping in his room, number 42 on Silas ward. I'll take one of you to him now and stay with him until he awakes, the rest of you are welcome to stay here" she said. We all gazed at each other questionably at who should go.
"I think Y/N should go" Guy said with a kind smile. "I'm sure he'd be happier to see you, instead of our ugly faces" he laughed. Will and Jonny nodded in agreement, causing me to laugh. I pulled them all into a hug.
"Thanks guys! I'll see you later ok?" They all nodded and I turned and followed the doctor down the corridors and up some stairs until we were stood outside Chris' room.
"Let me know when he wakes up okay? I'd like to check his stats when he's fully conscious " she explained. I nodded. "Come fetch me if you need anything, alright?"
"Sure, thank you". She set off down the maze of corridors while I turned to the door and pushed it open, entering Chris' room.
The room was semi dark and I could see Chris laying on the bed in front of me. His lips were parted as he took deep, calm breaths and his eyes were shut, suggesting that he was fast asleep. A blanket was drawn right up to his chest, hiding his injury but his his arms were visible as they laid on top of it. They were full of needles that led to some monitors.
The dark bags under his eyes, pale skin and the way his hair drooped over his forehead made him look all the more vulnerable, if not younger. I quietly took a chair and placed it by his bed, taking a hand in mine.
"Oh Chris.... What are we gonna do with you ay?" I whispered, planting a soft kiss on his forehead and stroked his cheekbone with my thumb. His skin was now cool to touch, thankfully at normal temperature. I sat with him for at least an hour before he started to stir.
I felt his hand squeeze mine as he was dragged from unconsciousness. He Groaned pitifully as His his eyes fluttered before they opened fully, revealing their brilliant blue gaze. He looked around sleepily before settling his gaze on me, a small smile playing on his lips.
"Good morning " I greeted him, unable to stop the grin stretching my lips. "How do you feel?" I asked, concerned at his pale complexion.
"Mornin'" he croaked, his voice crackling in his throat. He cleared his throat before continuing. "I'm fine, just tired.... And my leg hurts like a bitch" he chuckled, wincing as he shuffled it slightly . His gaze became thoughtful. "How long have you been sat there watching me sleep?"
"About an hour? It's 8:30am now".
"Really? Wow! You've been back to the hotel get some sleep since last night though, right?". Shit, what do I tell him?! I failed to stifle a yawn.
"No, I stayed the night here, the lads did too" I confessed. His eyes widened in horror.
"What?! Oh my God, you must be shattered!" He exclaimed. "I was fine, you should've gotten some rest!" He pressed a button on the remote to lift the bed and he sat up, fully awake now, waiting for my explanation. I sighed, he already feels so guilty after what happened, there's no point trying to hide anything from him.
"We were all worried about you" I said quietly, lifting my gaze to meet his eyes. "And we had a right to be! Cause you know, having severe surgery on your leg isn't normal! Not long after you went into surgery, we were led to the family room and hadn't heard anything all night about your condition. We couldn't just leave without knowing you were ok. Will paced back and forth, Guy fell asleep on some chairs and Jonny fell asleep on my shoulder!" I chuckled. Chris shook his head in disbelief , smiling to himself.
"God, I have amazing friends " he chuckled.
"You sure do!" I laughed. He leant forward so that his face was a few inches from mine, eyes boring into mine. "You know what?"
"What?" I asked
"I have an even more amazing girlfriend " he smiled, capturing my lips with his softly. I returned the kiss, our lips moving with in sync. Unfortunately we were interrupted by a nurse who had just walked in. She stood as still as a statue, mortified that she had disturbed us. We both turned to look at her, I could feel my cheeks burning red in embarrassment.
"I'm so sorry! I should've knocked!" She exclaimed. She obviously felt awkward now. Out of nowhere, Chris broke into a fit of giggles, causing myself and the nurse to join in. In result, the tension was broken- well played Chris!
"It's alright, you didn't know I was awake" he reassured her. She took a some readings from his monitors and looked satisfied.
"Everything seems to look okay, I'll get you both some breakfast in a minute too! What would you like? Cornflakes or porridge?" She asked. I chose some cornflakes while Chris settled for porridge.
"What about my band mates? Can they come and see me now?" Chris asked hopefully.
"Of course! I'll send them up now, then you can all eat breakfast together !" She smiled. With that, she turned and exited the room, in search of the guys. Chris looked at me With a mysterious twinkle in his eye.
"And that's how you make things less awkward! I can't believe she just caught us making out like that!" He blushed, running a hand through his short curls.
"I know! At least the guys are on their way up, I'm sure they'll be hungry too!" I said ,laughing at how red he had become. Despite waking up 10 minutes ago, He now seemed brighter and more himself. We sat chatting until we heard light knocking on the door.
"Come in" Chris called, a small smile twitching his lips. The door was pushed open to reveal the guys all with reassuring smiles on their faces, carrying in breakfast. 5 bowls of corn flakes and 1 porridge.
"We met the dinner lady on the way up" Phil joked, locking eyes with Chris. "And I'm guessing you ordered the porridge?" He asked him, grinning fondly at him.
"Yup! " he giggled, taking the bowl from him and spooning a mouthful into his mouth with a satisfied sigh, causing us all to giggle.
"Health freak" Guy mumbled, smirking as he sprinkled some sugar on his cereal. We all sat In silence, gratefully gobbling up the food. Thank God Chris is going to be alright!
Hey guys! Is this better for you?it's much longer lol. Hope you like it x
