Chopped Liver

"I don't know what happened," I confessed.

"What do you mean: you don't know what happened?! He's dead; isn't he?!" Melanie shrieked.

"Well, yeah," I nodded. "But I have no idea how."

"How?! I'll tell you how! He's got a knife sticking out of him; that's how!"

"I know, Melanie!" I snapped at her.

"There's so much blood!"

"It was an accident!" I cried. "I didn't mean to do it!"

"Wait a minute," Melanie said, looking up at me. "You killed him?"

"Yes," I whispered as I backed away. "He...he scared me."

"How did he scare you?" Melanie asked, confused.

"I was in here heating up a pizza when Paul came in. He was slightly drunk and coming onto me."

"So, you stabbed him?!"

"No!" I shouted.

"Then, what the hell happened?!"

"He was belligerent; rubbing the front his body against the back of mine. I told him to stop, but of course, he didn't. I whipped around to face him and he grabbed me around the waist."

"Paul was coming onto you?" Melanie asked, turning her lip up at me.

"Yes, I told you that already."

"Yeah, but I didn't believe it," she admitted.

"Really? Are you saying that it's impossible that he could like me?"

"No. I'm saying that he's never said anything about liking you like that."

"Hmm....you're right. That is odd that your boyfriend never told you he has a crush on your best friend," I said sarcastically while rolling my eyes.

"Whatever," she scoffed. "Just tell me what happened. Why did you stab him?"

"Like I was saying, he grabbed me around the waist. I told him to stop again, but he hugged me tight to him and buried his face in my neck while he ran his free hand, up my side to cup my boob. I tried to wiggle away, but his grip on me was so tight."

"He did that?!"

"Yes...He started kissing my neck. I put my arms on his chest to try and push him away, but he wouldn't budge. He just laughed at me and said: 'I like it when you're fiesty.'"

"What the hell does that mean?" Melanie asked, furrowing her eyebrows.

"I don't know, but he even sounded creepy when he said it; like he was possessed."

"This doesn't sound like my Paul at all. He's always so sweet."

"Yeah, well, I didn't pull a knife on him for nothing," I gestured at Paul on the floor.

"You still haven't gotten to the stabbing part," she observed.

"Yeah, cuz someone keeps interrupting me."

"Ok, ok. Continue," Melanie urged.

"Anyway...I told him if he didn't back up that he would regret it and he laughed at me. So, I kneed him in the junk. That made him back up and grab himself, yelling profanities at me. I looked around and saw a knife in the block close to me. When he stomped towards me, I grabbed it and pointed it at him. He stopped and stared at me. His eyes burned red behind his black-framed glasses. If I didn't know better, I'd say his eyes were crimson-colored rather than emerald."

"So, you stabbed him," Melanie stated.

"No! Stop interrupting me!" I shouted at her.

"Ok, ok," she said, jumping back.

"He took one look at the knife and snarled at me; like a wolf at his prey. I froze with fear. I couldn't breathe. My heart pounded in my chest."

"Mine, too."

"Melanie!" I yelled at her.

"Sorry, sorry. Keep going."

"Anyway," I sighed. "He suddenly smiled. Then, headed in my direction again, but as I thrust my knife towards him to try and ward him off, he lunged at me; the knife, driving deep into his stomach. I watched the life drain from his eyes in horror. Then, he collapsed onto the floor. That's when you came in."

"Oh, my God! I'm sorry that happened to you!" Melanie cried as she pulled me into a hug.

"I'm so sorry I stabbed your boyfriend, Mel," I cried into her dirty blonde hair.

"We have to call the police," she told me.

"They're gonna charge me with murder."

"It was self-defense," Melanie reassured me, stepping back. "It'll be ok; I promise."

"Ok," I sniffled, pulling out my phone.

"Here," she said, grabbing the phone from me. "Let me do it."

"Ok," I nodded. "Thank you."

"What are friends for?" Melanie asked, rhetorically as she took my bloody hand in hers and dialed 9-1-1.

"Yes; hello?" She spoke into the phone. "My best friend murdered my boyfriend in cold blood."

"Melanie..." I panicked.

"Payback is a bitch," she whispered.

I tried to let go of her hand, but she held tight. "Melanie, how could you do this to me?!"

"Ok, thank you," she said into the phone while she looked at me, menacingly. "I have the killer right here."

Dread set in my chest and my heart started pounding while I yelled at her, trying to rip my arm away. "I'm your best friend! You told me it would be ok! You told me it was self-defense!"

She let out a maniacal laugh. "You were supposed to be my best friend, but best friends don't stab you in the back!"

"How did I stab you in the back?" I croaked.

She narrowed her eyes at me. "You really don't know what you did?"

"I swear, Mel! I have no idea!"

Her words came out in a snarl. "Every boyfriend I have ever had has been obsessed with you. As soon as they meet you, they pine after you. I become one with the woodwork; just blending in with the wall like I don't exist. Paul was no different and he was the final straw."

"Mel, I..."

"Shut up, bitch!" Melanie snapped. "When I saw Paul drooling all over you, I got angry and when I confronted him, at first, he tried to deny it, but I knew better. It wasn't long and he admitted his feelings for you, to me. So, I knew that I had to get rid of you."

"You planned this all out?"

Her mouth twisted into an evil grin. "Yes and no. I drugged his beer and sent him in your direction."

I looked at her in horror. "How did you know I would kill him? It was a total accident!"

"Honestly, I didn't think you'd kill him; that was just a happy occurrence. I wanted him to throw himself at you so that when you woke up tomorrow covered in his blood with his dead body lying next to you,  you'd assume something happened between the two of you and that you killed him for it."

"So, your plan was to send me off to jail?"

"Yes. I was going to frame you for his murder, but now, " Melanie smiled brightly, "I don't have to because you took care of that for me. Now you are truly guilty and I am free of you."

As the sirens drew nearer,  I cried. "Please, Melanie! Don't do this to me! Help me convince them that it was self-defense!"

She smiled wickedly. "You deserve this and I will tell them how you seduced Paul only to murder him because he loved me and you were jealous."

As the police filed into the house, guns drawn, Melanie began to sob. "Here! She's here! She murdered my boyfriend!"

"Hands behind your back!" The officer demanded.

"Please officer," I wept as I complied with his command. "I didn't do anything wrong! It was self-defense! Don't believe her lies!"

"You have a right to remain silent," he told me as he proceeded to read me my rights.

I looked over my shoulder at Melanie and pleaded as they dragged me out of the house. "Please, Mel! Tell them! Please!"
