"You're right," you say decisively, looking at him, "but sometimes you have to prove yourself before you can make a difference, you know? We're just getting there."

He nods, but doesn't seem convinced.

"I know what'll make you feel better," you say, nudging him. "Cake. Let's get some, yeah?"

He brightens at that. "Yeah, sure."

You both run off to the cafeteria to get some, and you help yourself to a big piece of strawberry cake.

"This stuff is the reason I transferred," you joke, taking a big bite. The cafeteria is still mostly empty, so you can talk as loudly as you want, laughing and eating cake.
