Mystery Of The Three Fates

When I look back in my notes, then I vaguely remember the case of The Three Fates perhaps because the situation was equally distressing for me and my companion while we jointly tried to reach core of this case. It wasn't the case which was not intriguing or interesting but what happened during that time was undesirable. It was 12th of May in 1916.

"Tell me William, do you believe in God?" Tricky asked me one day while we were eating at dining table as Miss Rossarch perked up her ears to listen to our conversation.

"I can't say I do. It is not my basic idea of scientific explanation of the events but also an utmost complamancy of events that are so dynamic  manifestations of realities in themselves that I found it very hard to believe that a single person up in heaven is capable of controlling all of it. Plus ! I don't feel that there is a need for it..." I stopped seeing Miss Rossarch giving me a stern look.

"I believe I have made my point." I finished.

"Ah yes! But I can say today there is no god . Because the god is supposed to be just and how is it just that My father has invited his close friend Lord Blackwater today." He stabbed his pork fiercely.

"I take it that you don't like Lord Blackwater!" I nervously chuckled.

"No! I like Lord Blackwater . He is quite a good man and is very flexible to new ideas. It is his daughter that he brought with him last two times that I despise." He clarified. I looked at Miss Rossarch to gesture her to tell why and she was more than eager to oblige.

"Oh! I don't like to say bad titbits about people behind their back . But I can't say that I found any fault in that sweet little angel Lord Blackwater brought with him. The man ..oh ! How imprudent and always ordering " can you do it that way " and all ,poking his nose in matters that doesn't concern him. His daughter Agnes on other hand . She was such a sweet talker. Always tidying up her room , keeping things in order and doing things in elegant manner. I am surprised that Master Saltwater didn't call them more often. " She carried on.

"Really! You were supposed to tell why Tricky don't like her ?" I interrupted as Tricky continued eating ignoring us.

"Oh! That . It was nothing. Agnes just borrowed one of the observe book of him to read in her room when she was bored and he without thinking of simply to ask her if she took it , searched his room and then filed a case at police station saying 'Someone stole my casebook' . When he returned in evening with Inspector, Agnes had brushed off the dust from his casebook and kept it back very tenderly. Obviously then he had to withdraw the case and there was a bit of laughter over it but it was all very pleasent." She smiled .

"Never has been a more biased speaker!" Tricky scoffed as I chuckled.

"Well! I guess I will have to meet this Agnes myself and decide for myself." I sighed and then went back to eating my sausage.

We had searched up the newspaper for any new happenings that might be of interest but didn't find any so we had a little choice but to wait for only excitement that I was looking forward to having when two unknown people from Tricky's past life arrives.

It was about 6 pm in evening when we heard a carriage being stopped. Soon Mr Saltwater opened the door and with him were Lord Blackwater and Agnes I presume.

Lord Blackwater took down his coat and hat on hook and proceeded inside. There was nothing particular about him in sight than any other Englishmen but his way of walking certainly created an array of impression in room.

"Ah! You already know Tricky and here is William , my nephew." Mr Saltwater pointed at me . I was a bit surprised when he said me his nephew since he wasn't really father of my cousine and yet I felt good too.

"Good evening, Mr Blackwater." I lowered my hat.

"Oh ! Please to meet you too , William . I have heard all about your exploits . You and Tricky are quite a buzz in England these days." He chuckled as we smiled.

Agnes was just another twelve year girl . She had dark black eyes with golden hair and a face that might have attracted many of her age save Tricky X and I do hope for me too.

"It is so good to see you again, Tricky. Did you miss me?" She squealed hugging him as Tricky made a face like he was being suffocated.

"Hi ! William, was it ? I am Agnes. Nice to meet you too." She withdrew from Tricky and hugged me . Guess! She is a big hugger.

"Nice to meet you too." I managed to utter . Alright! She can kind of suffocate people.

"Go on Tricky! Tell him about your cases." Mr Dave Saltwater asked him as we all were eating food at dining table.

"I think William will be far better to tell since he records our cases in a file but sure. So basically it all began with the mystery of stolen documents. Not my suggested title ...." He told them as Lord Blackwater chuckled at several instances. We still retained all the sensitive information from him at that time in each of the cases we discussed. Soon everybody retired for the night while Tricky and me went to drawing room and started to draw our covers to sleep on chair.

"Why are you two sleeping on chairs? There is two rooms empty for you to sleep in comfortably." We saw Agnes's face shadowing over us as we opened our eyes.

"Uhm..we like to sleep on chair. So ." I stated.

"Well! That is certainly not very civilized way of sleeping. But if you want to sleep in kitchen or on table or on floor or outside gate or on chair, whom am I to question?" She smiled and then left.

"Tricky! I see now why you were so agitated at her return." I sighed .

"I know right! Let's just wait for tomorrow and then both Lord Blackwater and Agnes would be gone first thing in the morning." Tricky groaned as he fell asleep .With that assurance, I fell to slumber too.

Next morning we woke up quite early and there was no sight of either of them . Never had been a more pleasent environment for us. But the life is cold that way because just as we arrived at table after freshing up , Agnes was sitting at front chair waiting for us smiling .

"What is she doing here?" Tricky bluntly stated.

"Tricky! Lord Blackwater is quite a busy man and Agnes get a bored all alone by herself. So she is gonna be here just till end of your holidays at best." Miss Rossarch stated. Till end of holidays. Is she for real ? We have to bear her for 49 days . 7 weeks.

"Please sit down, Tricky. We are going to have so much fun." Agnes offered.

"Of course! I will sit . It is my house. Now Agnes! Here are simple rules. You don't interfere in our matters and we won't interfere in yours anyway." Tricky crossed his arms.

"Totally!" She replied as I continued eating.

Even before we had finished eating, we heard a knock on the door. Miss Rossarch sighed as no one stood up and went to open the door.

A man in his late 50s came running with the support of his stick. He was quite agitated with a pale face. He was of approximately 5 feet . His face was recently shaved so as to make him more presentable letting me to deduce that he was very careful about how people see him but his shoes on the other hand were stiched on two sides and yet he wore them . He is in pretty economical condition yet makes best of use as he can . His watch had few scratches. Probably live in a crowded area . We didn't hear any carriage. He has come on foot. A man of his age can't walk much . Probably lives in Salvador Street , a reasonable distance and very crowded .

'I see William! That you are deducing in your mind . Brilliant." Tricky remarked .

"Please sit Mr.." I offered him a chair.

"Mr Charles Deanling!" Man said panting seating on his chair.

"I take it that your relationship with your brother has worsened. I am sorry about that ." Tricky said as the man looked shocked and me too .

"So..what is happening here ?" Agnes intruded .

"Where were you Agnes during last night? We are private detectives working on our own discretion when there is something interesting in newspaper or someone comes asking for help like Mr Charles." I clarified as she sighed.

"Please! Tell me what happened that you had to run here all the way ." Tricky asked.

"My case is something of peculiarity. I wasn't sure that police would even look into it . I am an sculptor back in Salvador Street . I own a big shop there where I display my different arts. And people come from many different regions to see them and purchase it. So I have a very good business. Two weeks ago , a man purchased statue of Three Fates from me." He paused.

"The Three Fates? You mean from the Hellinisic people?" Tricky asked and he nodded.

"I told him that I would have it delivered to him by evening but the man was insistent on taking it that very same day . And well I couldn't refuse. The man offered 5000 pounds which is more than double of what is the statue worth." He drew our attention.

"Interesting!" We both said as Agnes and Miss Rossarch started to listen too.

"So I thought nothing of the matter. My statue sold and I earned so much money. Then few days ago , the man came and returned the statue saying that his wife didn't like it . He even said that he understands my trouble and I might keep half of the sum already paid and statue too. I was astonished but I saw no loss. Then a man came today saying he inspects statue from shop to shop . So I gave him a tour and when he saw The Three Fates, he stopped in his tracks.

He asked me to bring a glass of water. But before I returned to give it him , he was gone with no sign that he was ever here. Now I don't understand what is happening here . I don't know that if any of this even makes sense . But If I go to police with this, I would be treated as a joke ." He sighed.

"Indeed! I believe what happened is clear and yet I can do nothing." Tricky sighed.

"So does that mean you won't be taking this case ?" Mr Charles asked.

"No! On the contrary I will. Come William! We have to go to see this statue." Tricky rose up wearing his coat and then took a torch with him.

I was about to follow him when I felt someone pulling me .

"I want to go too." Agnes looked at us.

"No offence! But we don't need you." Tricky stated.

"Ouch! And I am coming anyway. So better call a big carriage." She looked at him as I sighed.

We were currently seeing different statues present in the shop . Tricky soon set his eyes upon The Three Fates and started to observe while I stood with Agnes.

"So is this what you two do ?" She asked.

"Pretty much. But certainly not observe so many statues. It is more like researching and then finding out evidence and deducing reasons and probabilities which Tricky does quite brililiantly ." I stated.

"Why does he not like me ?" She asked.

"Maybe because you don't do what he says and gets in his way and took his stuff without asking and make fun of our ways." I huffed .

"Oh! So now you have a grievance against me too." She crossed her arms.

"I wouldn't put it like that and I have to focus on the case so keep quiet, will you ?" I sighed.

"William! Tell me have you ever heard of Ninth Circle?" He finally left statue.

"I can't say I have."I replied.

"Well! This statue here was just a means to convey message. The man came here, took statue, draw signs in Greek hyleiographics and then the other men came here as agreed and recieved the message whatever it was .I expect that there will be some news tomorrow that might shook this country. Let's go , William. These individuals have used a very discreet way of conveying messages and there is no clue left to trace them except few facts that are obvious like the man who wrote these hyleiographics visible only in solar light is heavy smoker and likes to rest quite a lot and prefers his left hand over right hand." Tricky remarked .

"Obvious? How !" I questionned.

"You know my methods. Try them yourself, William ." He chuckled as he waved his hand for the carriage.

Mr Charles was quite agitated discovering there was secret writing on his statue but then again , he had already recieved money for it .

"Tricky! I presume that you deduced about his leftiness by pressure of the words inscripted " Agnes suggested as three of us got into carriage.

"Yes! And I didn't ask you ." Tricky scoffed.

"What is your problem? I try to be nice and get along with you and you just act so mean." She bit her lip and started to look outside.

I looked at Tricky as he arched back relaxed. No one said a word entire ride and Agnes quickly rushed to her room just as the carriage stopped.

"You mustn't think too emotionally , William. These tricks are often used by females to draw attention to themselves but if we don't give them that , at first we have wholesome of tranquility to ourselves and then they will come back again persistent and then again get angry. So you see the only way to be at peace is to let this cycle he continued without our interference so that while they may get into various changes, we can count on our constancy." He stated as I grasped every word and made notes in my diary to which he chuckled.

"Your theories are usually correct. I am just going to do that." I told him and pretty soon we retired to sleep after eating an awkward silent dinner.

Next morning I woke up to one of the most surprising sight. Tricky was already awake.

"How long have you been awake?" I asked .

"Not much. Just waiting for newspaper. And time is now." He quickly ran from his chair opening the door and picked up the "Daily London"

"The death of late Sir James Augustus , the former foreign minister and also a general has completely shook the England today .It has been confirmed that he died of natural cases. His funeral rites will be held at Church of Bethel , Bristol " Tricky put down the paper.

"Natural causes! My foot." He chuckled.

"You think the Ninth Circle is behind this?" I asked him.

"No! I don't think. I know it . Now the question is why kill him now and how to find them ?" He sighed.

"Well! That is quite obvious at least. We have to simply attend his funeral, made a few discreet enquires and we might have a lead ." I suggested.

"A very valuable suggestion indeed. But I don't want to go there as much I would like to . I have a certain tendency to be hyperactive in my own world among dead imagining the futility of paying respects to those already erased in sands of time." He sighed.

"Of course! I will go while you do what you think best. And I know you won't act on it but I think you should make things up with Agnes. After all she is going to stay with us for very long time and cases to come." I told him and went to freshen up and was quite ready in black clothes. I gave Miss Rossarch quite a shock as I came out . As for Agnes, she tried to show she doesn't care but yet she was obviously lying.

"I am just offering you a chance. Come with me if you want . You could be of certain help to our case that way ." I told her and walked out before she could say anything. With my hat , I was finally ready and soon called for carriage.

Just as carriage was about to start, a figure came in rushing.

"So you decided to come after all . Good ! " I sighed as Agnes smiled.

"So how will you start asking questions in funeral?" She crossed her arms.

"Ah! It is so sad that Sir James is gone. I wonder if he was here , what would he have been doing this time ?" I commented near two important looking gentlemen.

"Why my boy? He would have done so much for this country. If only the treaty had been signed before.." He stopped amd adjusted his tie walking away .

"So apparently he was heading some important treaty which people who didn't wanted to happen hatched a plan and with help of Ninth Circle had him killed." I sighed.

"Great! You carry on with yours and I will try to get some too." She said as she mingled with the crowd.

"Of course you will, Agnes." I groaned.

When we returned to our Lodgings, I found no sign of Tricky . Well he must have gone out .

It was getting very late, around 11 and still Tricky had not returned. I exhaled sitting on chair.

"Where is he ?" Agnes remarked coming.

"Who knows? Why aren't you sleeping? It always happen with us.", I sighed.

"So you just sit here waiting." She asked.

"Uhmm yeah !" I answered.

"Isn't that boring and lonely?" She sat down.

"What are you trying to do? Tricky warned me that you would try to manipulate my thoughts." I arched back on my chair.

"Of course he did. I am just saying you don't have to wait alone. I can keep you Company if you like." She smiled.

"Well sure." Just then there was a knock on the door . Ah ! Impeccable timing . I was getting really weirded out right now.
I opened the door to see blood drenched Tricky coming in .

"What in the King George's name happened to you ?" I stood up as Agnes looked shocked too.

"I solved the case ." He chuckled as he fell.

"Ok! Go and clean yourself up !" I raised him and he went to his bathroom.

We waited for quite a while. He sat down on the chair and then took out two sheets of paper. He wrote something on them and folded it .

"Choose one." He asked.

"Seriously" I sighed and then chose the one in his left hand while Agnes took paper from his right hand.

"Read it . Go on." He arched back on his chair.

"Kill the posterior ." I said.

"Destroy the base." She said confused.

"Seemingly both are different confusing statements and yet similar. You see Mr Charles didn't notice but the man who came to him yesterday didn't come only yesterday, he came couple of days ago before the original buyer who bought statue from him two weeks ago . He wrote "kill the posterior". Anterior, Posterior and middle are three fibers in deltoid muscle in body or to be simple posterior here implies head. And who is the head? Mr James Augustus.

The man answers back "Yes" destroy the base . For without posterior, other fibers will crumble . Just like that without Mr James, England wouldn't advance further to have France agree to Non-citizen treaty. I won't go into details of treaty . To be brief, these gentlemen from Ninth Circle succeced in killing him by giving him a scare causing instantaneous heart attack at his age . So natural death. Clean . They are off the radar . Now what will they do in England. I figured out they must be leaving for harbour. But I also knew that they would be looking for me . After all I am quite a buzz thanks to newspaper. But they haven't seen me. So William, your presence acted there as me . Their man informed them that harbour is safe . The only port from which ship was sailing today was one near northwest region. I quickly followed them. Then they switched from train to horses to get out discreetly so from nearby stables ..by borrowing a horse. It was quite dark then .

"You stole a horse?" Agnes widened her eyes .

"Really! Is that more important than what I am telling? I had already informed the authorities at Port and just as they reached there, we had them surrounded. One tried to make run for it .Well , we had quite a scuffle and I stabbed him in the leg and a bit blood oozed out. But well all was good. I only hope that they can catch the third man . It is quite important to not let these Italian spies roam free." He finished.

"Oh! Italy. Of course." I sighed.

"Well! Brilliant as usual, Tricky." I chuckled.

"You are not concerned that he misled you and didn't tell you about his plan ." Agnes asked and we both groaned.

"The plan only works because I didn't know it. If I know I have to act like Tricky, I might not know how to and get nervous . But I didn't and so I gave quite a reasonable impersonation." I told her.

"Oh! Well ! Next time I am coming with you , Tricky " Agnes rose up and kissed me goodnight walking to her room.

"Did she just kiss you ?" Tricky stuttered.

"Did she just say that she is gonna accompany us in more cases?" I raised my eyes.

"Hey! That is supposed to be my line." We both said at same time.
