END OF PART I
In all of my cases, this case has been particularly very interesting and remarkable as I saw two men trying to figure out each other and I loved it more than anything else to see Tricky having a hard time deducing a man who spend his life just doing that.
There was a conference being held at Liverpool and me, Tricky and Agnes had decided to attend it since we didn't get any new cases for weeks.
"Do you know who is going to hold the conference? They basically just said a bunch of scientists?" I asked him.
"Seriously! How could you miss that? Well if you must know, his name is Sigmund Freud. People are quite sceptical to accept his theory on human behaviour since he is German but I must say the fellow is quite remarkable." Tricky chuckled.
"Well! All I know that he is popular for his Freudian analysis. That humans are driven by their desires and gratifications for acts. I think it is quite true. At least better than structuralism." I remarked as we sat on our seats.
"I have literally no idea what you two are talking about?" Agnes informed us.
"Well then I don't understand what you are doing here ?" Tricky stated.
"Umm..I am here for." She was about to say but I gestured her not to.
"You are here for William. It is basic to figure out possible finishing sentence." Tricky looked up .
"Yes! We are getting along quite well with each other so I thought to invite her you know just to ..get to know better." I said hastily.
"Well that sounds quite reasonable. Ah ! Here comes Sigmund Freud." Tricky pointed our attention as we glued our eyes to the stage.
"The Science has always fascinated me. Even as a young child. Some could even say I was being driven by this desire, the gratification to find out true character of human by the applied method of psychology and now I have finally developed my own theory. Why must you believe me over so many others already present is a matter . It is a curiousity, a desire in other words that needs to be satisfied and I will....." He started to speak as we all listener to him interestingly.
After the conference was over , I felt like my whole perspective had changed significantly.
"Hey listen! William, you go on ahead with Agnes. I am gonna look up something." Tricky told me vaguely.
"Well...uhmm..sure " I agreed as he knew he wouldn't exactly tell me anything right now .
"So we finally got some time alone" Agnes said pleasently as we took a carriage.
"I want to make few things clear just. We cannot let Tricky find that we have decided to court. It would well complicate things." I told her .
"Agreed. So now tell me about yourself?" Agnes asked.
"Well I was born in 1904 and my name is William Ryder. Parents died couple of months ago in fire accident. Then I moved to my aunt where I met Tricky and we started investigating and solving cases. He is my cousine ." I said.
"Your story is humbling. What I mean is ...what are your interests? What about the person you were before you met Tricky?" Agnes asked.
"My sole interest is in contemplating the true meaning of our existence in this world and finding out whether human fates are futile or some pre-ordained doom path. Well at least that is what it was ..at first. Them I got keen interest in life and going and mixing in the flow of life. I guess I am a modern humanist except without those specific skills advanced to that level yet and little bit displaced by centuries. As for who I was before I met Tricky, I see how trivial it was ...well yet not completely futile." I told her . This ought to weird her out and send her into a oblivion that she can't possibly find anything cool in me . Don't get me wrong. It is not like I don't want her liking me but I just can't see any benefit for her or me or our situation if we are in a relationship. Rather, it will be web of complications.
"Wow ! I mean ...whoa! I can't even think about books of philosophy without getting bored and you are aimimg to crack the fundamentals of existence, the most perhaps radical approach that could be taken." Agnes stared at me in awe.
"Yeah ! Wait ...you are not weirded out. That doesn't fit logical sense." I blurted out before I quickly closed my mouth.
"Alright! I get it . You are not actually interested in me yet so you wanted me to lose interest in you . Nice try but logic and you know human feelings don't concide." She smiled.
"I mean like , I am a philosopher and logician and it is not you but it is my mind . I can't see myself actualising in such sort of stuff. I just keep seeing it's futility." I told her at which she gave me a peck on cheek.
"Now tell me how does that make you feel?" She asked .
"A bit embarrassed. I mean we are still in a carriage..." I told her .
"See! When something like this happen, you don't actually force yourself unconsciously trying to think of what is gonna happen in future. You just go along with present and feel." She held my hands smiling.
"You are certainly wise when you want to convince someone." I chuckled at which she flustered.
It was about evening that Tricky returned. His hair was dishevelled and he looked like he had just worked tirelessly for hours .
"So what happened after we left ?" I asked .
"Oh! Something fascinating...and truly remarkable." He smiled.
"That is the first time I have seen you acting so giddy. Now I really want to know what happened?" I insisted.
"Don't mind me guys . I am here too " Agnes joined in conversation.
"Well ! You know Freud right. I went to ask him couple of extra questions since I wanted to know few more answers . Then I saw that one of the documents from his room had been taken .." Tricky began.
"And apparently it seemed odd that since there was only one key to door , how could it disappear and who would go to trouble of unlocking locked door forcibly and yet making it look like inside job . It took you long road and them you asked questions and found them...come on! We covered this in Mystery of Emerald Crown . I can't put it in my case files." I conjectured as Agnes looked at me with wide eyes.
"Well! That does cover the zist of it and takes all the fun out of it . So anyway what did you and Agnes do ?" Tricky asked sitting down .
"Oh ! You know Agnes. She was just herself troubling and all..." I chuckled as she glared at me.
"Doesn't work on me . That glare thingy." I smiled.
After this day , we hardly got any cases. It was not like criminals had dried up. No! Nothing was just that interesting. There was just a lack of flavour. There was just a tastlessness in the air . Something just didn't feel right. Within six weeks that Agnes stayed , she has gotten awfully close to me to the point of nor even leaving when I said that aloud and I certainly didn't feel like I fell for her charms if they existed . With sombre look on her face and relied on mine, we parted ways on 27 June, 1916 .
And Now finally, from next day school was starting. I was looking forward to go and just live a life of normalancy . Recently hostels were started and we both were looking forward to it but now was the time, now was the moment that things would get much more interesting.
Recorded on 28 June,1916.
