Disappearence of Lady Baxwell

On all of my accounts of Tricky X , never has been a case more delicate and exquisite that prompted my companion to rethink his opinions about love . It was few days after the case of the Loyal Killer. The case had been so fascinating that my companion felt quite satisfied and wasn't worried about when will the next mystery corp up for us. Today we were enjoying the delight of fair which was being held in the city right now.

"What are you saying? The man has left his stall without any guardian." Tricky asked quite surprised .

"Yes! Oh ! Who can blame him? Maybe I would have too if I had been in love with a woman like our Joe is." A man called Dixie from nearby stall chuckled answering our question.

We proceeded away from the stall looking for another one to try.

"What do you make of that ?" Tricky asked me referring to stall.

"Now! Tricky, we are on holiday today to enjoy the delights and fun . Not to worry about what I think of man leaving his stall." I looked at him.

"Oh no! I don't ask about the stall . It is quite clear by what Dixie said. But what are your thoughts on love?" He asked.

"Well ! I am not quite sure if I am a philosopher keen on such subjects like you but I will try my best. Love is a promise connocted first by the attraction and then by the virtues that follow it.  The balance which hangs it may be built on lies or a clear prospect of honesty and sincerity. And yet neither of them stays permanent while one is even harder to achieve so most people prefer sweet talks instead of a direct relation to prosper it's branches  and yet many a times a liability and at others a source of strength." I stated.

"And you say you are not philosopher ?" Tricky chuckled.

"What are your own thoughts?" I asked.

"I think love is a necessary evil born out of desire and yet changed into need. The very foundation of society and individual in this dynamic world. And even with every passing moment they spend more in it , they grow more and more sensitive and biased and blindness increases. For no man or woman can spend time together without this bond and ensure the further of human line , they must fall in this trap again and again even when that need to produce an heir is gone because the need has converted to an insatiable desire ." He remarked.

"Well! I guess there can be different ways of looking at things." I sighed.

"It is same as you , William just much more descriptive and factual. And we both know our mind is Gesalt. So it will be different even if we agree." He said to which I nodded.

Before we could discuss further , we heard that there was a commotion in the area .

"What is the matter?" I asked.

"It is Joe . He just came back from his house and is saying that Lady Baxwell, his employer is gone." A man stated.

"Gone? You mean killed." We asked.

"No! There is a note left there saying 'Lady Baxwell is gone.' " The man said breathing heavily. Me and Tricky looked at each other.

"New case!" We said excitedly and then proceeded to Joe who was already surrounded by quite a large number of people.

"Mr Joe! My name is Tricky X and this is my friend and colleague William. We heard of the commotion and we're hoping to get the brief of the matters from you . We are quite good at finding things and people." Tricky X said to him.

"I have heard of you from many circles . Please come with me to Lady Baxwell's Estate and I will explain you everything." He agreed as we followed him.

"Lady Catherine Baxwell was the sole widow of Late Sir Henry Baxwell. She was born and raised in Scotland . It had been about 2 years since Sir Henry's death and she had inherited his property . She was living quite affluently still . I joined her service as a cook three months ago. Besides me , there was one Butler and a maid to whom I fell in love with . My mistress was a very calm and peaceful lady always enjoying and having parties so the environment in the estate was always very pleasent.

Then few weeks ago , her brother Lord Wilfrid Selvester (her maiden name ) arrived. She was quite happy to see him but when all of us departed to our rooms , we heard a very heated argument going on but yet we didn't understand a word of it being spoken in Scottish Gaelic . The very next day Mr Wilfrid left her and everything was back to normal until two days ago . She recieved a letter from her brother . She was so upset and agitated reading it that she threw it into the fire and no one dared to ask her anything about it . She had lost her usual temperament and was now quite secretive. Today she sent us away to take leave so we thought that she is back to ger pleasent mood again. When I left the stall this afternoon to go back to the estate to spend time with maid Kristen , then I heard that there was a sound of window opening.

I quickly ran to see who it was but the man was already gone. Kristen had also come out . We didn't notice anything taken and then Kristen's eyes fell on the note.

There was written "Lady Baxwell is gone." And indeed, she was not at the house. Now I didn't know what to do after her sudden disappearance after these series of events. I wasn't sure that police would take me seriously so I just ran back to my fair to discuss with Dixie and then the whole news spread" He finished as Kristen served us tea.

"Thank you !" I said.

"Mr Joe , are you sure that you have told me everything? Any even strange seemingly unnecessary detail!" Tricky crossed his arms and he nodded.

"Alright! When was Lady Baxwell Seen?" Hé asked Kristen.

"It was about 11pm. I had heard her calling for a cup of tea and I put it in her room while she was dressing herself." She stated. Tricky sighed and wore his gloves.

"Thank you Miss Kristen. If you don't mind , I will like to take this note and observe it ." He rose up .

"Of course. Anything you need ." They agreed as we left them and called for carriage.

"What do you make of it , William ?" He asked me .

"I think that Lady Baxwell's brother got into some trouble and wanted her to get out of it . She wanted him to handle it himself. That was probably topic of argument and then he sent letter two days ago saying some rude things to her again asking for money. In anger , she tore it and threw it into fire to forget it. However as for her disappearence , that is a mystery for me ." I put forth my theories.

"Remarkable. Your theories are getting better. I think you might be right in what happened but can't say that topic would have been what you suggested . There is lot of facts in this case to consider and very little string to pull. These are deep waters , William." He said and arched back thinking.

We soon reached our lodgings and then I waited in anticipation as Tricky X brought out his magnifying glass and started to look at the note under table lamp .

"Ah! Scottish scent . I knew it ." He chuckled.

"You mean that this note is made from paper from trees found only in Scotland and hence it proves that Mr Wilfrid left wrote this note." I deduced.

"Correct , my dear fellow. But it also proves something much more. William! I think this case is gonna be our quickest case in history." He remarked.

"Well! Good for you. The quicker you solve this case , sooner we can get back to our holiday even though the fair was only going to be held today." I sighed.

"Sure ! William, open the Locker and take out directory of Scotland." He threw me a key as I caught it and opened a heavily locked metal locker.

"Now Search Catherine Baxwell...Nay Selvester. " Hé said as I started to flip pages quickly as hundreds of Catherine came up .

"Catherine Selvester. , Born in 1884 , Northern Scottish plain ..father dead , mother dead , no kin." I stopped in my tracks.

"No kin? But her brother..." I bit my lips.

"There is no brother. "Tricky X chuckled sitting in his chair.

"So who was that man and what connection he has to Lady Baxwell ?"I wondered.

"Exactly! " Tricky remarked.

"So maybe that man knew her back in Scotland and now man kidnapped her for extorting money." I said.

"I don't believe that Lady Baxwell is kidnapped. There were no traces of her being dragged or anything in the house. I observed it. She went with him willingly ." He answered.

Before we could divulge further, there was a knock on the door rapidly. I opened the door as Joe came inside.

"What are you doing here ? Is everything all right?" I asked.

"There is a man in our house. He says his name is Mr Canterbury Kent and is saying that Lady Baxwell came to him at Church today and married him . He even has marriage papers to show as proof and is demanding the ownership of estate." He panted.

"Which rightfully belongs to him because when a woman remarries someone, then property granted to her by will of her husband's death go to her current husband. Let's go . I think I might know who it is!" Tricky X chuckled as both me and Joe looked at him wondering what he was thinking.

"I have been waiting for two hours. Well get on with it ." Mr Canterbury spat seeing us. He was a tall man but it was clear he prefers his left leg more than right leg as he walked and there was a large beard covering his face.

"Perhaps you would be kind enough to tell us then where is Lady Baxwell then if you have married her ? I have heard that bride and groom are generally together on wedding day ." Tricky sat on the chair and crossed his hands staring at him.

"Very well. It was about 2 pm when she arrived at the church. We had been courting each other for couple of months in secret. One day she wrote to her brother about us. Lady Baxwell's brother Mr Wilfrid Selvester at once paid her a visit. He was quite concerned about his sister courting a man he didn't know anything about which lead to some conflict and heated arguments between them as she told me . I was concerned about her and wrote to her brother who didn't write back and then two days ago , Lady Baxwell recieved a letter from her brother asking her to breaking things up . She got angry and threw it into fire . At once we decided that if we didn't marry soon , her brother would do something quite drastic to keep us apart. So she dressed herself and came to me . We married at the church with a clergyman officiating us . We are now set to go for America far away from her brother could ever trace us back. Lady Baxwell wrote the note "Lady Baxwell is gone " so as to distract anyone to not have a clue of what she was up to and throw them off so that no one can prevent our marriage. I am just here to collect her things and other important stuff." He finished. I felt quite pity for him that Lady Baxwell lied to him that she had a brother possibly to held the marriage sooner.

Tricky X was quiet and burst into laughter.

"Oh! You ..I have never seen a better liar in my life." He laughed as all stared at him.

"What is the meaning of this? I tell you my whole accounts and you laugh at me." He rose up angry.

"Sir! Lady Baxwell lied to you possibly to marry you sooner because she had no brother." I said.

"No ! William. She didn't. She never lies to him . After all she was too lovesick for her old flame, isn't that right Mr Canterbury or should I call you Mr Wilfrid Selvester?" Hé raised his eyes as I rose up stunned and Joe looked at him.

Mr Canterbury gulped and then fell down.

"I didn't think it was possible for anyone to figure it out.." He started to breath heavily.

"You see gentlemen , Mr Wilfrid here disguised as Mr Canterbury really fitted all the pieces together. Back in Scotland, there was a simple tradition of catholic to catholic or protestant to protestant marriage and yet Catherine Selvester and Mr..if you will kindly tell your name now. Your real name ." He looked at him.

"Alfred Hitchcock" He answered.

"Yes ! So Catherine and Hitchcock were of either different faith or their families just didn't approve of them. So they married in secret . Then Lady Family arranged a match for her and she was sent off to be married to Sir Henry Baxwell. Alfred knew that he couldn't do anything about it at that time so he tried to forget her . Didn't work out? Then he came to England and learned of Sir Henry Baxwell's death one day and came to ask for her hand .

She couldn't go with him because she would lose all her property . So they hatched a plan to keep all the property too and go on their merry way . They faked an argument , and created this story so that Alfred will impersonate as Mr Canterbury and inherit all property and they can be married too. Because if it was proven she was already married at her time of first marriage, she could have been charged by not only losing property since marriage wasn't legal but also persecuted by Church. It was a clever plan they webbed string by string. I got to tell you but not enough to throw dust in my eyes." He finished as we all took deep breath

"Congratulations! You destroyed our chance at life of happiness." He rose up .

"Uh! Not quite so . As far as I know I don't care what Church thinks or law as long as there is no crime. You are more than welcome to go on with your plan now all know that Lady Baxwell is fine . Perhaps even take Joe and Kristen. They are quite loyal ." Tricky rose up as Alfred shook his hand shocked.

"Thank for this case , Joe." Tricky shook Joe's hands who was still surprised.

"It is quite remarkable , isn't it? She had no need to go with Alfred at risk of losing all property she already had and yet she chose to go along with it . Why ? Because of love. She could have lived her life as she was already but she took such a huge trouble just to get back with an old flame. Ah ! How fascinating People are when dealing with these things that sometimes even I question what is point of trying to assess logic here." Tricky sighed arched back on his chair.

"Yes! We humans are just something else. In good terms or bad terms. That is matter of relativity." I agreed as I laid back too feeling the satisfaction of  tranquility.

Recorded on 9 May , 1916.
