CHAPTER SEVEN
Even once I was inside my house and within the safety of my room, my mind continued to spin frantically as I attempted to make sense of the last two days. Armaros' reaction to Azazel frightened me, they seemed to have history and judging by the way that they looked at each other, it couldn't have been good.
Everything about Armaros seemed to be clouded by some form of secret, or some element of mystery. In fact, everything that involved him so far was downright sketchy, even Asher was surrounded by mystery, although he seemed nice enough.
To be honest, the only thing stopping me from confronting Armaros was the fact that I didn't know him very well, for all I knew the events that have happened over the past couple of days could have nothing to do with him, it could be a coincidence that he showed up around the time that weird things started to happen... but I'm, not a strong believer when it comes to coincidences
"Adria! are you ready to go?" called my mother impatiently.
I came out of my thoughts and closed the biology books that I had been trying to study.
"Coming!" I shouted back, hearing the front door close in response.
I raced down the stairs and through the front door, making sure to close it behind me. Making my over to the car I jumped in the passenger seat and fastened my seatbelt.
"Are you excited?" asked my mum, a bright smile forming on her face.
"Not as much as you" I laughed, noticing multiple bags on the back seat containing all sorts of dog stuff.
"I picked those up while you were in school, I figured that you would prefer to be spending time with your new puppy" she explained as she pulled away from our house.
We drove for around half an hour before we pulled up at the animal shelter, nerves bundled my stomach as I gazed up at the tall building. There was no colour present on the face of the shelter, the walls were a cold, slate grey and were pretty successful in masking the tiny barred windows that were dotted along the surface.
I had always thought that it looked like a mini-prison, but the inside was slightly nicer and was painted in light pastel colours.
"Hi, I'm Mrs Darion. I was here earlier filling in the paperwork for the adoption" explained my mother as we approached a woman sitting behind a large white desk.
The woman at the desk looked up at my mother and smiled.
"Yes that's right, follow me please," she said pleasantly before standing to walk from behind the desk.
We followed her along a couple of bright corridors before we came to a large metal door, she grabbed the handle and knocked her body into it which forced it to creak open with a terrible groan.
"Please feel free to have a look around, there is a lot of dogs in here," she said with a small smile.
"Thank you" I replied before taking a good look around the room.
There were two different rows of dog pens either side of me containing dogs of all different breeds, sizes, and colours. I had no idea how I was going to choose just one of them.
I walked off to my left and began to look into the cages. I passed many dogs who were engaging in their own activities, seemingly unbothered by me walking past them. I walked slowly looking at each dog until I heard a little crash, I looked down to see a small brown and white puppy with large floppy ears jumping against the cage, wagging its tail happily.
"Hello" I laughed, leaning down to give it a fuss through the bars.
I stood back up and read its information sheet:
Name: Pepper
Breed: Springer spaniel
Age: 7 months old
Sex: Female
Status: ADOPTED
"Well Pepper, your new family is going to be very happy with you," I said crouching back down to talk to her before moving on.
I continued down the corridor, stopping occasionally to fuss some of the dogs before I came to a cage that appeared to be empty. I crouched down to peer into the kennel positioned in the corner of the section and saw a pair of sorrowful amber eyes staring back at me. Intrigued, I stood back up and looked at the information sheet:
Name: Dakota
Breed: Czechoslovakian Wolfdog
Age: 2 years old
Sex: Male
Status: __________
I had never heard of a breed like this before, curious to see what he looked like I kneeled down low attempted to look into the dark kennel.
"Hey boy," I said softly when a pair of amber eyes reappeared. "I wonder how long you have been here Dakota"
A shiny black nose emerged from the darkness and sniffed the air cautiously, I cooed encouragingly in response and sat myself down on the floor in an effort to look less threatening.
The light travelled along the dog's body revealing a dull grey coat which looked as though it hadn't been washed in a long time. But even with a dirty coat, Dakota was beautiful, he was a relatively large and walked with light elegant steps which showed off his wolf side perfectly.
"Good boy" I praised as his tail passed the kennels entrance.
He walked a couple more steps towards me before he bowed his head and growled lowly.
"No, it's ok, I'm not going to hurt you" I assured quietly.
"You should feel honoured that he came out of that kennel for you," said the woman that walked into the room with us. I flinched slightly at her sudden appearance and watched as Dakota walked up to the bars and laid down in front of me.
"What's his story?" I asked curiously, reaching my hand through the bar carefully to smooth his coat. He flinched under my contact before relaxing to my touch.
Well we found him abandoned in a dumpster when he was a pup, he was pretty run down but the guys in the other shelter managed to nurse him back to health. He was even adopted when he was still a puppy but as soon as he grew up they sent him back here, I guess that he was too hard to manage since his breed is very energetic and needs a lot of attention" She explained.
"That's awful, how long has he been here?" I asked looking down at the fully grown dog before me.
"He's spent more or less his whole life without a family but has only been in this particular shelter for a couple of months. They transferred him here to make room for some other dogs in his old shelter" She clarified.
"Can I meet him properly?" I asked hopefully as I got to my feet.
"Of course"
She fumbled over her ring of keys before settling on one that was slightly larger than the others. She clicked the lock open and opened the pen door making Dakota perk up at the sudden movements.
She opened the door widely allowing Dakota to roam out. I crouched down carefully and allowed him to approach me. Once I was sure that he was comfortable, I reached out and smoothed his thick coat.
"Adria, you have to come and see this adorable little labrador puppy on the other side" My mother chimed before seeing me interacting with Dakota.
"I want to adopt Dakota," I said adamantly.
"Don't you at least want to look at the other dogs? I thought that you wanted a puppy" she sighed looking over Dakota's fairly scruffy appearance.
"No, I've made up my mind" I finished, smiling as Dakota gave in and fell into my lap.
"Well, it is going to be your dog I suppose" She mumbled with uncertainty.
"I know he's not what you had in mind but I promise that I will look after him" I spoke up reassuringly.
"Ok then, I suppose we will have that one" She directed at the shelter lady.
After some more paperwork was filled out we took Dakota to the car and settled him in the back.
"Its ok" I cooed "You're coming home with me, and I'll make sure that nobody hurts you again" I promised before closing the door.
When we arrived home I took Dakota out of the car and lead him into the house. Realising that my dad wasn't home from work yet I took Dakota for a tour of the house, allowing him to sniff certain things that he found to be intriguing.
"Once he's settled in we are going to have to give him a bath!" my mum should after me as I disappeared out of the kitchen doorway.
"Ok" I replied before taking the dog upstairs to see the rest of the house.
As soon as we walked into my room Dakota began to growl lowly, I looked at him in confusion to see that he was staring at my bedside table. I approached it cautiously to see the flower that I had placed there after discovering in my locker yesterday.
"That's weird" I whispered, noticing that the flower had shrivelled up in the short amount of time that I was gone.
I walked over to the bedside table and picked up the flower, but Dakota ignored my action and continued to growl at the table.
"What's wrong?" I questioned, wondering what was bothering him.
He looked up at me quickly before he squshed his nose under the table, emerging with what seemed to be a pendant in his mouth. Two silver feathers hung from a sleek silver chain, upon closer inspection, I realised that the feathers had some form of crystal engraved into their surface that was glowing softly in the evening light.
I took it gently out of Dakotas mouth and it immediately began to glow brightly at my touch, I dropped it in surprise and looked at Dakota who was staring at the pendant suspiciously.
I released a small breath and picked up the pendant again, watching as it proceeded to glow brightly at my touch, but this time it glowed a soft shade of green.
I looked over the pendant in mesmerisation, unintentionally ignoring Dakota who had walked around me and was growling lowly towards my bedroom door
"That doesn't belong to you"
