Academic Decommitment
3 Months Later...
Evelyn watched the city speed by outside the train. She sighed, already dreading the day of school ahead of them. The train stopped and she shot her hand out to catch on to the handholds, leaning forwards as it swung around. The only person who didn't move was Peter, despite using both hands to type on his phone.
"Who are you messaging?" Evie asked softly.
Peter hardly glanced up. "Happy."
"He isn't going to respond, you know."
Peter shrugged and sent the message anyway, scrolling through the other hundreds of unseen messages he had sent. Peter seemed convinced that if he spammed the phone enough, Happy would respond. Evie was certain he had block their numbers. That didn't stop her from pestering the man himself, though.
The train stopped again and they hopped off, walking in comfortable silence across the schoolyard. Flash attempted to run them over on his new car, honking his horn and sneering as they walked past. "What are you, blind, four-eyes!?" he shouted as he whizzed past.
"At least I can see people when they walk in front of me, unlike you!" Evie shot back, muttering under her breath. Peter simply watched the sleek car as it turned into the parking lot. They only had one car, and it was old.
The hallways were a crowded mess of students and teachers, sounds and chatter bouncing off the walls and lockers. The school news broadcast was playing, with Jason and Betty holding an awkward conversation about the upcoming Homecoming dance. The twins moved in sync to their lockers, putting in their books. Something popped up on Peter's shoulder and a bad imitation of Emperor Palpatine echoed in his ear.
"Come join me and together we'll build my new Lego Death Star."
"What!?" Peter whirled around to face Ned, trying to block out the mean whispers of people nearby. "No way. How many pieces!?"
"3803."
"That's a lot," Evie said from where she was reading.
"Yeah," Ned chuckled, smiling slightly. "We can build it tonight. D'you wanna join us?" He asked, almost shyly.
Evie smiled. "I'd love to, but we've got the internship."
Ned nodded slowly. "Right. You guys always have that internship."
The twins nodded, feeling slightly guilty that they hadn't been spending as much time with Ned. Peter shrugged, swinging his bag onto his back. "Yeah, well, hopefully it'll lead to real job with them."
"That would be so sweet," Ned breathed, his eyes far away as he dreamed of an internship with the Avengers. "He'd be all "Good job on those spreadsheets, Peter. Here's a gold coin." He paused as Evie raised an eyebrow. "I don't know how jobs work."
"That's exactly how they work," Evie said. Someone called her name and she looked up. "Hey, guys, I'll catch you later in Physics. Bye!"
"Who's over there?" Peter called after her as she jogged away.
"Someone who needs advice on life," she called over her shoulder.
Peter blinked as he watched her walk down the hall with another student. "People go to her for advice?"
"Yeah, it's pretty common. She's like the grade's therapist," Ned replied. "So I was thinking I'll knock out the basic bones of the Death Star at my place. And then-"
Peter fell in step with Ned, trying to listen to what he was saying. He was distracted, however, when a girl walked across the hall in front of them. Soft, deep locks framed her elegant face, the tan hue glowing in the light. Her full lips parted in a gentle smile as she noticed Peter, giving him a small wave as she continued past.
There was no doubt that Liz Allen was beautiful.
Peter nodded at Ned, not even listening to what he was saying. "Yeah yeah, That would be great."
Ned grinned, a spring creeping into his step. The shrill ringing of the bell rang through the halls. "Come one, let's get to Physics!"

Peter and Evie huddled around Peter's laptop, oblivious to Ms. Warren as she asked another question. The video showed Spider-Man and Frostbite stopping a bus from crashing into a train, and it was pretty epic, to say the least. "Woah, nice catch," Evie muttered under her breath.
"Peter, Evelyn, you still with us?"
The two twins snapped up, Peter closing his laptop. "Yeah, uh..." He studied the diagram of the pendulum quickly, scouring his brain from when he had taught himself this ages ago. "Uh, mass cancels out, so it's just gravity times sine. He used this formula all the time when he was swinging, so it was engrained into his brain.
Ms. Warren nodded. "Correct. You see, Flash, being the fastest isn't always the best if you are wrong."
Flash spun around in his seat and shot Peter a glare. You're dead, he mouthed. Evelyn scowled at him, flicking him on the back of the skull discreetly. Peter turned and glanced at the clock. It was still 11:48 a.m.

Evie twirled her pen between her fingers, zoning out on Mr Cowbell droning on about Neils Bohr. She had spent a lot of time secretly pouring over Peter's textbooks, so she was well aware about the gold foil experiment and such. The teacher had a horrendous passion for seating plans, so Evie found herself on the side next to Cindy. Peter, who was currently looking around suspiciously, was on the opposite end. Evie watched as he opened the drawer. He added a few drops of some orange chemical, and from his expression, something didn't go well. He slammed the drawer shut, masking Evie's snort, which thankfully, no one else heard except him. He rolled his eyes and they both looked up at the clock. 12:48 p.m.

"Did Liz get a new top?"
Ned shrugged. Through the did of the cafeteria chaos they watch Liz hanging up a massive banner with "Homecoming" sprawled across it. "No," he said sighing. "We've seen that before, but never with that skirt."
Peter blinked dreamily as he watched someone compliment the beautiful girl. "We should probably stop staring before it gets creepy."
"Too late."
They boys whirled around at Evie's remark to face MJ and Evie. The two of them were watching them, books open, Evie munching on an apple. "You guys are losers," MJ sated before the two turned in unsettling synchronization to their books.
"Then why do you sit with us?" Ned asked."
"Because I don't have any friends." MJ paused, casting a glance at Evie. "Except for her. And she sits with you."
Peter pulled a face. "Since when did you guys become friends?"
"Since we got sat next to each other in music. Now finish your food and don't look at me like that, Peter." Evie returned to her book, whispering softly to MJ. Ned blinked at them, trying to figure out what just happened.
"I did not think that they of all people would be friends," he whispered.
"Agreed."
"Hey Evie, can I talk to you?"
Everyone looked up as the blond-haired girl approached the table. "Hey Lorelei, what's up?" Evelyn said as she got up quickly and walked away with the girl. Peter frowned as Ned pulled an I-told-you-so expression.
"See?" he said, "she's the grade's therapist."

"Next question." Liz turned the page in the decathlon question book. "What is the heaviest naturally-occurring element?"
Ding. "Hydrogen's the lightest. That's not the question. Okay." Alex looked back down at the table, embarrassed.
Liz shot him a sympathetic smile as a bell rang again. "Abraham?"
"Uranium."
"Correct! Thank you." Abe gave himself a small victory pump as they all turned to page 10.
A little distance from the decathlon practice sat a flustered Peter trying to explain to Mr Harrington why they couldn't make it to nationals. Evie was too preoccupied with her thoughts to add anything.
"Come on, Peter, it's nationals. Can't you get just one weekend off?" Mr Harrington pleaded.
Peter shook his head. "We can't go to Washington. If Mr. Stark needs us, we have to make sure we're there."
Flash piped up from the other side of the room. "You've never been in the same room as Tony Stark."
"And neither have you, if I recall," Evie snarked, snapping out of her stupor.
"Wait what's happening?"
"Pete and Eve aren't going to nationals."
"What?" Cindy paled. "No. No no no no no."
"Why not?" Abe asked.
Liz gave the duo a deflated expression. "Really? Right before nationals?"
"Peter's already quit marching band and robotics club."
Everyone turned to MJ, who sat curled up against the wall with a book. She peered at them all through her fringe. "And Evie hasn't turned up to chess club lately, or half of the choir lessons. I'm not obsessed with them, just very observant," she mumbled, hoping that she didn't come off as too creepy. Evie gave a nod.
"Look, you guys will be fine." she said. "You're all brilliant and talented, and you don't even need us."
"Besides," Flash added, "you'll have me." He flashed them all a smile, which no one returned.
"... Okay so he might be the only problem-"
"Evelyn." Mr Harrington gave her a stern look. She merely resisted the urge to roll her eyes. "Flash, you're in for the two of them."
"Oooh, I don't know. I gotta check my calendar first. I got a hot date with Black Widow coming up."
Abe rang the bell. "That is false."
"Abe, what did I say about using the bell for comedic purposes?"

Ring please ring please ring please ring... Evie sighed. Would the bell ring, for crying out loud? The end of her pen bounced against the desk as she waited for the teacher to give them the all-clear, syncing up with Peter's impatient drumming fingers.
The piercing shrills pierced the air. Finally. The twins bolted out the door and raced down the hall, sure to beat the hometime rush. Peter slammed the side door open and jumped over the fence, hardly giving Evie enough time to vault over them and scramble after him.
They sprinted through the city to the best sandwich shop in Queens, (according to them,) the bell ringing as the door swung open. Mr Delmar turned around as they walked up to the counter. "Hey, Parkers," he greeted, tossing the tea towel onto his shoulder. "Number five for you and number four for your sister, right?"
Evie nodded. "With the extra pickles and squashed down for him, and no mushrooms for me."
The workers behind the counter went to work. Evie grabbed some sour worms and a bottled water. Mr Delmar smirked.
"How's your aunt?" he asked.
Evie narrowed her eyes as Peter answered. "Yeah, she's alright."
"Ella es una mujer italiana muy caliente."
The twins both glared at him with matching expressions. Peter smirked, folding his arms. "¿Cómo está tu hija, eh?" He earnt a hi-five from Evie for that.
However, Mr Delmar was not impressed. "15 dollars."
"Wha- it's ten dollars!" Evie pointed at the sign to prove his point.
Delmar ignored it. "For that comment, 15 dollars."
"Hey, I'm joking, I'm joking." Peter fished around in his wallet. "Here's 10 dollars."
Mr Delmar grinned. "In messing with you, boss."
Evie snorted, scratching Murphy the cat behind the ears as they waited. She had a soft spots for cats and Peter often found himself dragging her away from stray cats wandering down alleys.
Their order was soon done, so they waved a quick goodbye to Mr Delmar and sprinted out of the shop and into a nearby alley to change into their suits.
And then, the fun would really begin.
