3rd person POV:

In the surprising empty room of a teenager, a boy woke up from the sound of his phone's alarm.

The sixteen-year-old boy got up from his bed, wearing shorts, a t-shirt, and a medallion that hung around his neck by an old piece of string.

The medallion was a coin-shaped piece of copper, half the size of a palm.

It had the yin-yang symbol on it. The light green color on some areas of the medallion showed how old the medallion was.

This young boy left his room and began making breakfast which consisted mostly of toast.

Looking at the time, he realized that his sister hadn't woken up. His attempts to wake her up were valiant but unsuccessful. Eventually, giving up, he leaves a note on her door and gets ready for school.

Putting on a school uniform, he takes a moment to look at himself in the mirror.

This boy nicknamed Kai nervously looked at himself. Moving some of his hair, he saw the scars of a wound on his head.

Kai: I can do this...(sigh)

Hiding his medallion under his shirt, he began leaving.

Exiting his apartment, he saw an old man trimming the hedges.

Kai: Good morning, mister Chan.

Mister Chan: Good morning, Kai-san.

Young Kai left and crossed the street. Looking back he looked at his apartment building.

Kai:...(breaths in)

Kai:(breaths out)

The young man made his way to school, somewhat nervously. He avoided eye contact with everyone he could and kept his distance from people wherever he could.

Kai was constantly aware of his breathing, he constantly made sure he breathed at a certain rhythm.

Arriving at a high school, young Kai just headed straight to class, continuing to avoid everyone's gaze, in fact, he only looked down at the floor.

Kai:(mind) Last day of the first week of school. I can do this. I can do this...

(Bump)

(Books falling)

???: Hey!

Kai:!?

Because he wasn't properly looking where he was going, he accidentally bumped into a girl named Rose Johnson.

Kai had never seen her in school before, but when he laid eyes on her, he felt something different. Then he felt bad when she began shouting at him.

Rose: Watch where you're going! You made me drop all my stuff!

Kai: I-I-I...

Rose: Your....? What?!

Kai: S-sorry!

Kai: I... L-let me help you-

Rose: Just piss off! Before I kick your ass!

Noticing how many people were staring at this encounter, Kai panicked and simply ran to class.

Arriving at his desk, he placed a hand on his chest, feeling his medallion under neither his shirt.

Slightly tugging on it, he began to calm down. Enough to dig his face into his hands.

Kai:(mind) Why can't I do this? I used to do this so well when I was a kid...

In the back of his head, he could hear gunshots. Those were sounds only he heard.

The class began with roll call. From A to Z, the teacher listed out all who were here, including Rose.

Teacher: Miss Johnson?

She ran into class.

Rose: Sorry I'm late!

Teacher: It's fine. But where have you been all week?

Rose: I was sick.

Teacher: Do you have any of the material we've gone over during the time you were gone?

Rose: No...

Teacher:(sigh)

The teacher looks around the room.

Teacher: There's a free seat next to mister Zeuso.

Teacher: Mister Zeuso, please help miss Johnson, catch up.

Kai:!?

Kai:(nervous nod)

Rose:(mumbles) You're kidding...

Rose: Tch...

With no other choice, Rose sits behind the desk, next to Kai.

Kai:(mind) Oh no... Why me? This is a bit much for me...

Rose:(mind) Can't believe I have to sit next to this dick head!

Handing over his notes, nervously to her, she takes it out of his hand and angrily goes over the notes.

Through the entire lesson, Kai controlled his breathing to calm himself down as rose stared holes into him.

Later, during lunch, Kai was in search of a spot to sit at, with all other spots taken, he was only left with one. The seat behind the table Rose was sitting at.

Kai:(mind) Not her again...

Reluctantly, he placed his tray of food on the table.

Rose: What are you doing?

Kai: I-I don't have anywhere else to sit at.

Rose: Too bad. Get lost.

Kai: Bu-but...

Rose: Listen, just because we sit next to each other doesn't mean we're friends. Now get lost.

Rose: I'm already in a bad mood, and you're not making it better.

Kai: I-I'm s-sorry... I really am... I just want to eat... I won't-

Rose: Tch!

She slams her hands on the table and gains everyone's attention as she stands up.

Rose: You just don't get it, do you!?

She walks over to him.

Rose: Get... Lost!

In her anger, she attempts to shove him back, however, Kai easily steps to the side and avoids it, while accidentally making her stumble forward in front of everyone.

Rose:!?

Everyone either chuckles or "Oooooohhhh"'s at the sight, making Rose even angrier.

Rose: To hell with this! I'm kicking your ass!

Kai: Wh-what!?

Rose spins around and throws a left hook at Kai, who instinctually leans back to avoid getting hit.

She continued to throw punches at Kai who to everyone surprise, was easily able to dodge her attacks.

Rose: Hold still!

Kai: But y-you're trying to hit me!

Rose: I know!

She crouches down and attempts to sweep Kai's legs to make him fall to the ground, but Kai backflips onto the table behind him to avoid getting tripped.

Everyone began looking at him, impressed at what he was able to do.

Rose: Who the hell are you!?

Kai: I... I'm... Kai...

He runs away, leaving the cafeteria in a rush.

Eventually, he finds himself on the roof of the school.

Kai: Stupid, stupid, stupid!

Kai: I should have just brought my own lunch from home and find somewhere quiet to eat.

Kai: Or at least take the shove...

Loosening his tie he pulls out his medallion and begins to hold it in his hand. As he tugs the string attached, he begins to calm down.

Kai:(mind) I'll probably have so much attention on me now...

Rose, after being somewhat humiliated by Kai, was now eager to get back at him.

Finding the school's gossip gal, she began interrogating her.

Rose: Oi! Tell me about this Kai guy!

Gossip gal: What do I get out of telling you?

Rose: You won't get a black eye if you tell me.

Gossip gal: Fine, fine, jeez... Cool your tits.

Gossip gal: This Kai's real name is Kyle.

Gossip gal: You should probably avoid him like everyone else.

Rose: Why?

Gossip gal: I hear that he was kicked out of several different schools due to violent fights he was in.

Rose: That wuss? He could barely speak to me!

Gossip gal: Maybe he has one of those split personality schticks.

Rose: When did he even get here?

Gossip: Monday. While you were sick. Or should I say pretending to be sick?

Rose: Tch...

Gossip gal: Come on gal, spill the beans!

Rose: If you have to know...

Rose: I heard a gang called the Hell's strawberries were in town.

Rose: Despite their name, they're a pretty big and cool gang. I went looking for them, but when I found them and tried to join, they just shooed me off.

Gossip gal: That's why you're in such a mood you want to get back at a, probably dangerous guy, for accidentally bumping into you and wanting to sit at the same table?

Rose:... Shut the hell up and mind your business.

She storms off.

When the lesson ended, Kai does his best to get back to his apartment as quickly as possible.

As he rushed home, he tugged on his medallion which calmed him down.

Kai:(mind) I'm so stupid! I shouldn't go to school! It's not safe... It's safe at all-

While passing an alleyway, a thug grabbed his arm that was slightly tugging his medallion, this caused Kai to pull too hard and snap the string around his neck that held the medallion.

Kai:!!!!!

The next thing Kai remembered was him picking up his medallion.

Kai:?

Kai: What...? What was I doing?

Kai:(mind) Going home. That's right.

He happily walks home, oblivious of the thugs, behind him that was bloody and bruised.

A person watched him leave, flabbergasted at what he had done.

When Kai returned to his apartment complex, he was met with Mister Chan.

Mister Chan: Ahh, Kai-san. How was school?

Kai: A mess...I-I bumped into this really grumpy girl. And it all went downhill...

Mister Chan: Hmm... Did string break at school?

Kai: Huh?

He looks at the Medallion in his hand.

Kai: Oh, uh. No. It broke on the way.

Mister Chan: Hmm... I give you new string.

Kai follows Mister Chan to his workshop in the apartment complex. Chan then gives Kai a new string for his Medallion.

Kai: Thank you, mister Chan.

(Bzzt, bzzt)

Kai:?

After using the string to wear the medallion around his neck, Kai took out his phone and saw that he had received a text from his sister saying how she would be back late.

Kai:...

Kai: Uhh... Mister Chan?

Mister Chan: Hm?

Kai: Do you think you could train me a bit today?

Mister Chan:... Alright. Follow.

Kai then went off to spend the rest of his day training with Mister Chan.

Late at night when Kai was going to sleep, he heard someone enter his apartment.

Going into the living room, he saw his older sister, Jen, drunk and passed out on the couch.

Kai:...

Grabbing a blanket, he placed it on her, before giving her a little hug.

Jen:(smiles)

Kai:(whispers) Goodnight...

Escaping to his room, he took a glance at himself in the mirror.

Kai:...

He looked away as if he was trying to avoid his own gaze. Kai went to sleep.

(Earlier today)

After being dragged by the arm into an alleyway by a group of punks, the string that was tied around his Medallion snapped, causing the medallion itself to go flying.

Kai's expression went blank.

(Kai unhinged theme)

Punk: Hey, kid, give us-

(Crunch)

Kai slammed his palm into the thug's nose, completely breaking it while knocking him back into his four friends who caught him like they were doing a trust exercise.

Thug 2: Dude, you okay?!

His friend asked as his nose gushed out blood.

Thug 1: URGK....(passes out)

Thug 3: He knocked out Kenny!

Thug 4: You asshole!

Thug 5 rushed up to Kai and jumped kicked towards him.

Kai spun around to build momentum, and high kicked the thug into a trash container.

Thug 4 and 3 simultaneously went to punch him. Kai jumped into the air and simultaneously kicked the two thugs in the face, making them stumble back.

Landing on his feet, Kai approaches the two thugs. Grabbing thug 4 by the arm, he drags him closer, then snapped his arm by the elbow.

Thug 4: AAAGGGGGGHHH!!

Thug 2 tried to rush in and help his friend, but Kai kicked the still recovering thug 3 into him, making both fall to the ground.

Kai pinned the thug 4 to the wall. Then with a swift swing of his elbow to his jaw, Kai knocked the thug unconscious.

Kai slowly began moving toward the remaining thugs.

Rolling over the back of thug 3 to get closer to 2, Kai kicked thug 3 in the face, knocking him out.

Thug 2 began crawling away in hopes of escaping.

His hopes were as crushed as his face when Kai stopped his foot on to thug 2's head.

Kai then simply stood still, as if he was waiting for something... Or perhaps another opponent...

(Crash)

He then turned his head once he heard a garbage can fall to the ground.

Without showing any emotion, he walked back to the opening into the Alleyway where he was pulled in.

Kai stopped once he noticed something on the ground.

His medallion.

A curious expression grew on his face, as he went to pick it up. When he grabbed it, Kai because confused.

Kai:?

Kai: What...? What was I doing?

Kai:(mind) Going home. That's right.

He continued his walk home. Oblivious to the damage he caused.

As he left, Rose watched with shock. After following him to give her a piece of her mind, and witnessing what he was capable of... Rose had no idea what to make of him.

Rose:(mind) What the hell....?
