Chapter Fourteen

Speeding through the streets, Alaric ahead of me, we finally reach the spot where we left Josef and Maverick. Alaric and I glance at each other and scan the crowd. Maverick wades through the sea of bodies as Josef sticks to his heals.

"Where were you?" Alaric asks annoyed.

"We went to scout out some places Luke could be hidden. There are a lot of abandoned buildings." Josef sucks his lips together. "This is going to be hard. For all we know he could be locked in his room."

"Or in the dungeon," Alaric suggests.

"I don't know," I shake my head. "Those places are too obvious, Lady doesn't want us to find him. She's wicked and smart. She'd hide him where we'd get trapped."

"What are you suggesting?" Alaric shifts his gate into a slow jog, leading us away from the crowd.

"I'm saying he's where he can't get out, and where he can be controlled. A place where we are cornered. He is in the Pit's prison."

Maverick nods and Josef shrugs. "It doesn't hurt to start there. As long as we're together."

Alaric nods and we sprint to the blood soaked arena. Eyes mange to drift towards us the more momentum we gain. We reach an opening where standing tall and broken, embezzling all my nightmares, is the Pit. The screams of victims and cheers of prosecutors burn my ears while tears tread along the rim of my eye.

I gulp my pain and resentment jogging towards the round building. Leading the team towards a back entrance I had once escaped through, I reach of the door handle. Yanking hard I hope it will unlatch. It doesn't. Maverick slips past me and picks the lock within a few seconds and opens the door. Sliding in single file we enter the stone stands, all facing the sand pit.

"Jean," Alaric whispers resting a hand on my shoulder. "Where to next?"

Snapping out of my daze and trying to smash the butterflies in my stomach I crank my head in each direction. Jogging on the steps I finally come across the trap door leading to the underground prison. Sluggishly I try to open the trap door but my legs give in. Maverick steps forward again and yanks hard but only a chain rattles behind the barrier.

"It's locked from behind the trapdoor?" Josef asks shaking his head.

"Must be in the right place if there's a lock," Alaric stares up at the doors surrounding us. "But where are all the guards?"

"I don't know," I confess uneasily. "But I suggest we hurry and be prepared to fight. Lady might be waiting for us to fall into one of her traps."

The boys nod and I glance around the Pit. I don't know what to do now... I don't know how to get in. I stare at the sand as my muscles twitch with fear. As my gears turn a click echos in my head.

"We should look for another way in." Josef starts to walk around the arena.

"What if we go into Pit and unlock the door that leads from the arena to the prison?" I ask leaning over the railing and staring down at the steep drop.

Maverick leans over and stares at the door lock and nods his head.

"You can pick the lock?" I ask hope climbing out of my throat.

He nods again and I smile, "let's go. Alaric and Josef, if you stay here we'll come out the trap door."

Alaric nods and smiles, "be careful. Okay?"

I nod back and leap over the edge. Landing hard on my knees I brush off the sand. Maverick, despite his huge stature, lands eloquently on the ground beside me. He looks down concerned but I shake my head, "let's go."

Maverick takes a bit longer to unlock this gate, but he manages to open it anyways. Sliding through he shuts the door behind us and we walk down the dark hall.

A figure walks up and down the halls with a large sword on his back. He looks anxious and uneasy. His walk jittery and uneven. Maverick sneaks up behind him and snaps his neck effortlessly. The crack echos in the cells as he walks towards the locked trap door.

My heart churns as I glance in each empty cell. What if I was wrong? What if he is in the other prison? Sprinting through the hall I reach the other side of the arena. It's empty here too. My heart falls to my stomach and I let a sob slip past my lips. I failed Alaric, Maverick, Josef and Luke. I'm a failure.

I sprint back to Maverick where he places a hand on my shoulder and shakes his head. Drying my tears he unlocks the chained trapdoor and we head up. It's quite and Alaric and Josef wait at the door.

"Where is he?" Alaric asks.

My head hangs low and I shake it, "I don't know. The dungeon is too obvious, and the truth is I don't know where his bedroom is."

Josef places a hand on my head and pats it soothingly. "We'll take one more look before heading elsewhere. It's okay, I'm sure we'll find him."

Alaric pops down the stairs and starts looking through the cells, Josef close behind.

"I'm an idiot to think I could get Luke out of this place so easily." I groan and lightly kick a solid storage door with a heavy lock on it. The lock rattles and there's a faint tap from the other side of the door. Like a stone hitting the wood.

I pause and Maverick scrunches his brows together before approaching the lock. He pulls out his lock picks and fiddles with the lock while Alaric and Josef start to make their way back from the other side. As the chains rattle more stones hit the door, faster and heavier.

Tap. Tap tap.

I feel as if the guards will be down here at any moment. The tension strung in the air is making me anxious and Maverick can't seem to unlock the door. Alaric takes the lock pick from Maverick and fiddles with it for a bit. The tapping form the other side of the door intensifies.

Tap tap tap. Tap tap. TAP.

Suddenly, the tapping stops and we all freeze. An eerie silence fills every crack in the room, as the click from the lock echos in the hall. Alaric looks back at me and I nod my head. Hesitantly he slides the bolt lock over with another click and clutches the handle. Pushing on the door it creaks open, darkness absorbing the light. Tiny pebbles surround the door entrance and another stone is thrown at our feet. Something is in here and isn't supposed to leave.

Shaking I step forward, fear and adrenaline causing my legs to shake. I pull a knife out of my sheath as a dark figure lunges a sword at me. It catches my side as I try to turn away. Alaric pulls my shoulder back and walks in front of me, "it's okay."

Josef lights a lantern so Alaric can fight. I take another step forward. The yellow light illuminates the quite room.

His sword drawn he catches the blade of the intruder and attacks him with a force unknown to man. Within a few seconds blood falls from the dead soldiers mouth. Silence refills the room and we gaze at an empty space.

I move around lifting hay and bloody chains. "Someone was in here before we came."

Josef touches the blood and whips his head to me. "This blood is fresh. I'd say that person is still in here."

Maverick guards the door as we fiddle with the walls and floorboards. We pick at every crack before I notice a crack along the lower wall. My nails pick at it before I kick it and it shifts.

Alaric turns to me and helps my pry at it, watching it come loose. The square fitted stone is heavy but comes out of the wall, I bend down and lift the floor boards, revealing a room underneath.

A contorted figure leaps out of the darkness towards us. Alaric whips his sword out again and pushes the creature back down. Josef takes a step forward and let's the light fall onto it. The body shields its eyes from the light, dirt covering its hands as the chains wrapped around its body rattle. Blood drips from the cuffs and I realize it's a person hiding in the darkness, neglected and alone. My heart patters and I rest a hand on Alaric's chest, taking the lantern and setting it on the ground.

I lower myself down and pull my hood to my shoulders. "Are you okay?" I ask quietly, scooting towards the prisoner.

Slowly the hand covering their face slides down and reveals dull, light brown eyes. Dirt hides most of his features and he reeks of body odour. There's a gag in his mouth framed with rough stubble as a strand of curly locks flop over his forehead. Everything seemed to be masked with mud except one brow with a notch in it.

My heart smashes into pieces once it hits my ribcage. The realization hits me with the force of a thousand bullets. "Luke?"

A tear slips down his cheek and he sniffs, nodding his head.

This time I don't hold any tears back as I cup is face and press my forehead to his. "Quick," I command, "get these cuffs off of him."

Without hesitation Alaric and Maverick jump down and work diligently on removing the chains. Josef unpacks a few medical supplies to treat Luke's wounds. I cut the gag and remove it from Luke's mouth gently, sliding a long strand of hair behind his ear. He's been hidden here for a long time, unkept and hopeless.

Luke never says anything, he keeps his eyes down, and waits to be freed.

Once the chains have been thrown off Josef slides in to tend to the cuts on his wrists and ankles. "This isn't a great job but we're running out of time. Once we're in a safer place I'll fix you up properly."

Alaric and Maverick hoist Luke up with them. He's as tall as I remember, his muscle mass less. But that doesn't stop the pieces of heart from jumping out of my chest every time I look at him.

I bring my hood over my head again, take my bow out and set a arrow on the shelf. Josef and I lead the way up the and to the hall before reaching the stairs. Luke hobbles behind us. As we slide out of the Pit, people stare at Luke and whisper. It takes time before it registers that it's their missing leader who we are taking. Worry and heartache rests on the Bellator Clan's faces, they stare at us, but never stop us.

Luke stares at his people and moves away from Maverick and Alaric. His gate is rough and awkward, but he manages to jog on his own.

We manage to speed up, Luke gaining momentum and balance with each step. Zipping around the corner we approach the Immunis. My mom waits at the edge with a backpack strapped to her back. As we run past she slides into our group and paces herself with me. I smile at her and she returns it, grabbing my hand and squeezing it as we run.

We are almost at our horses, but I don't let my guard down. Getting Luke was still too easy and someone must be waiting for us. Alaric takes the lead and rounds the final corner before the rest of us.

His steps stop and so do I, something isn't right. The team stops behind me and I glance back at Maverick and Josef, shaking my head. Maverick grips his sword and Josef hands Luke a few throwing knifes.

Spinning around the corner I release a shot and hit a man with a bow. I reach for another arrow and Maverick takes the corner wide, slicing threw men with speed and accuracy. Josef throws his knives hitting a few men. Luke slides across the dirt and cuts the throat of a man while knocking out the others. I can tell it pains Luke to hurt his own people.

Within seconds of us rounding the corner only three men remain out of the 10 sprawled across the ground. One who holds a knife to Alaric's throat, another who hides a man behind him.

"Be careful of who you shoot next Jean." The familiar voice calls from behind the soldier.

I hold my bow up, an arrow already resting on the shelf. I draw the string back and anchor it to my jaw. "Who are you?"

The man steps out of the shadow and smirks, "you don't remember me?"

I wish I didn't. "John." I growl.
