25 || like a knight, he's been smitten
joshua carried a medium sized mug and a small plate of cake to the booth that both him and jun were sitting at. the mug of hot chocolate was for the previously shivering purple haired male who wrapped his pale fingers around the hot mug. he sighed in relief at the feeling of warmth flooding his hands before looking to his side and smiling at joshua who started picking at his carrot cake.
"thanks josh." jun smiled gratefully at the brunette who nodded with a grunt of affirmation. he took a sip of the hot chocolate, wincing at how hot it was before readjusting himself and blowing at the very hot liquid. after finally taking a big sip without burning his tongue, the chinese male glanced sideways towards joshua who hummed at the sweetness of his carrot cake. he had a sweet tooth and couldn't resist ordering himself a small slice of cake when ordering jun a hot chocolate.
during his blissful cake snacking, he noticed the not so subtle way jun stared at his cake with envy. joshua sighed, he figured the purple haired male would react exactly that way which is why he had asked for a second fork prior to arriving at their booth with their orders. without a word the brunette handed jun a fork and slid the plate over so that he had more access to it. he smiled proudly when jun also hummed in delight at the sweet taste of the carrot cake. the pride of sharing food with someone and having them also love your favorite dish was immeasurable.
"thank you again joshua, you really didn't have to buy me anything or even share this with me." jun gestured to the small piece of cake on his fork that was heading straight to his mouth. he chewed happily, letting the warm flavor of the carrot cake melt with the sip of hot chocolate he had taken seconds before picking up some cake. "yeah I know very well I didn't have to spend money on you. don't expect this niceness any other time though, it's a one time thing."
"acting mean about it to try to cover up your nice side is very tsundere of you." jun laughed to himself. to him it was very enlightening to see that joshua was kinder and more gentle than he had presented himself to be during the last few months. he could see why chan and seokmin were so fond of the brunette, it was so charismatic of joshua to act tough and strong-minded while being this soft and gentle person at the same time. it reminded jun a lot of both wonwoo and seungcheol, two other people he knew who liked to show they cared through actions rather than their words. "I think it's quite charming."
"whatever you say junhui." the brunette shrugged his shoulders lightly to brush off the way jun's comment made him blush lightly. he hummed and went right back to looking down to pick at his carrot cake. jun immediately felt bad; in his perspective joshua silenced himself because of what his big mouth said. a lot of the time joshua seemed frustrated by whatever jun was saying, it was just all coming to mind now that this pattern existed.
with his realization that his playful engagements with joshua may have been seen negatively by the latter came the harsh feeling of guilt. wonwoo had told him some time ago that he shouldn't be too pushy with joshua, jun just didn't get why he was saying that until now. being too pushy had the potential of making joshua as uncomfortable as he seemed right now. the brunette couldn't even look at him after he made that weird comment about him being charming.
"I'm sorry josh." jun's voice tone shifted to a more sorrowful one as he clutched his warm mug of hot chocolate in his hands. he had a tendency to play around with things with his hands from straws to small piece of tissues. it felt relieving to fumble random objects in his hands seeing as jun felt uneasy when he just sat still. his shift in tone made joshua looked at him confusingly, very curious as to why the purple haired male was suddenly feeling this way now rather than weeks before when he was out getting joshua in all sorts of trouble in school. "what are you sorry for?"
"I know that I'm a lot to deal with and I know you don't like me at all, but it's nice that you're at least trying to be kind to me. I really appreciate it." the purple haired male spoke as simply as he could. joshua was surprised by jun's presentation of maturity here. he has always assumed that the chinese male had no care for his feelings or such, but here he was being sweet and kind. it made joshua feel horrible for being so quick to judge jun, especially after seeing how willing he was to make a friend out of joshua despite how rude the brunette was.
this wasn't the first time joshua had doubted his quick judgement of jun, he had these feelings before when they spent time together at the mall or when jun bought the book at the bookstore so that he could read something joshua loved and share a common interest with the brunette. joshua was beginning to understand just why their friends adored jun so much; it was because of his dedication and how open he was to being friendly.
"it's fine jun, you're not annoying all the time. maybe only about 90% of the time if I had to put a number on it." even if joshua was starting to understand jun more, it was just way easier to continue to have the same cold attitude with the chinese male. the friendly hate relationship was really all joshua could handle at this point, he didn't really know if he could tackling opening up his feelings for jun and exploring them when all he wanted to do was focus on graduating high school with top grades.
"is that really supposed to be a compliment?" jun questioned with a pout on his face. he understood what joshua was doing, the brunette didn't want to play into the somber mood going on and would rather avoid the topic of their friendship by deflecting it with a small joke. it was very understandable, there were many times where jun played things off as silly jokes as well. he had done it so much, it had become a way of life for him personally. that's why jun's tone shifted once more as he grabbed onto joshua's shoulder and exclaimed loudly. "also wait, you called me jun!"
"I did? must have been a mistake then." joshua found it hard to hide the smile on his face as jun began to rile himself up. he sighed before moving jun's hot chocolate to the side so that the purple haired senior wouldn't knock it over while celebrating this big victory. afterwards, joshua felt himself being suddenly pulled into a side hug with jun who pulled out their camera and aimed it so that it was taking a picture of the two of them. "you called me jun!! this moment deserves a picture, smile please!"
"jun-" joshua tried to protest by pushing jun's face, which was way too close for comfort to his, in the opposite direction. jun was very adamant on taking the picture, in fact he pulled out his classic sad pout and directed it right at joshua as soon as he was pushed away. this pout had been very successful in the past, jun used it on wonwoo and mingyu to get them to cosplay with him last halloween, so the purple haired student was very confident it would work on joshua. "there it is again! can you please smile, for me?"
"fine." jun grinned widely, throwing his arm over joshua's shoulder for a second time while holding up the camera for a second time. he glanced at joshua before taking the picture, cheeks warming up when he spotted the brunette with one of the biggest and brightest smiles he'd ever seen. the proximity of that smile shining right at the camera, and at jun, was enough to completely smite the purple haired individual. after all, jun found it difficult to focus on smiling at the camera himself when such a golden smile existed right next to him.
