19 || the beginning of it all
"what brings you in here today little guy?" widened eyes followed the doctor as she smiled down at the ten year old in the emergency room bed. beside the ten year old stood his worried mother who was holding the hand of his little sister in her own. she looked stressed out; with both a four year old daughter and an energetic ten year old son to take care of, her hands were full. "my son, he said he felt really tired this morning. I thought he was playing around and then I got a call about him fainting during class so I rushed him here."
"you made a good decision bringing him here, why don't we find out what's wrong with you hm? what's your name?" the friendly doctor smiled at the child who still seemed shy around her. he looked up at his mother as to ask if it was safe to talk to the female doctor. when she nodded at her son, he took that as an okay for him to speak. even if he did sound too soft, the doctor was still delighted to have the young child speaking to him. "junhui, but everybody calls me jun."
"alright jun, I'm going to put this band over your arm just to check your blood pressure. it'll be a little squeeze." jun nodded as the doctor took his blood pressure. it was slightly above average so the doctor took note of that as she continued her tests. she checked jun's mouth and throat for any blockages and did a neurology exam on him before grabbing her stethoscope to listen to his heart. "take a big deep breath for me now jun."
"hm that's a bit odd." the young doctor mumbled to herself as she took yet another listen to jun's heart. she heard a small murmur in his heart the second time around as well. being a young doctor who was new and inexperienced at her job, she automatically assumed she was wrong. she was still a doctor in training after all which meant she still held several insecurities about the diagnosis process and her own ability to go through with it.
"what's odd? did you find something wrong?" jun's mother asked, she had heard every word the young doctor was mumbling to herself. that and the concerned expression on the doctor's face did nothing to reassure her bad feeling. jun himself was rather calm. he was honestly just glad that the doctor had gotten the cold end of the stethoscope away from his chest so that he could go back to playing with his four year old sister named jia. "I'm not really sure. I'm going to go get my supervisor for this."
moments later, the young doctor arrived back at jun's side with her superior now overseeing his operations. they chatted briefly, to get the older woman up to speed before she took a listen to jun's heart. being an attending who specialized in cardiology, she was definitely more experienced than the younger doctor and was therefore less hesitant to diagnose jun. she looked at his chart, seeing that he had both a slight fever and the heart murmur made her confident enough to speak to his mother. "that's definitely a heart murmur. however I do think it's what we call an innocent heart murmur. these tend to develop when children have fevers, your son most likely fainted due to fatigue."
and with that jun, his sister, and his mother left the emergency room with nothing more than a prescription for medicine that would eventually clear up jun's fever. he was told to rest up at home for a few days before going back to school. jun was more than overjoyed by the break from school where as his mother was very suspicious about his diagnosis. she felt like it was something more than a fever, and her suspicions were proven to be true when they had ended up in the emergency room within the next week.
"we came here last week and you said he was fine. he fainted again and he can't breathe, there better be some explanation for this or help me god I will-" jun's mother spoke harshly with hot tears in her eyes as she spotted the same young female who had consulted on her son's case last week. her husband was also there this time as well, he patted jun's back softly as he struggled to breathe properly. the young doctor was quick to approach the bed, looking at jun's chart once again before sympathetically making eye contact with the older woman. "ma'am don't worry, we'll make sure to find out what's wrong with your son-"
"you said that last time and he's still sick!" she yelled at the doctor, attracting attention from other doctors in the emergency room. her husband stopped rubbing jun's back and instead went right to his wife's side to make sure she was okay. she was very close to tearing the doctor in half and he wanted for that not to happen because he knew she was fully capable of doing so. luckily all the ruckus had also attracted the attention of the same cardiologist who had seen them last week.
"jun back again?" she asked the ten year old as she brought up an oxygen mask to try to help him focus his breathing. she worked with him, making sure he took strong deep breaths before pulling out her stethoscope once again to check on his heart. the doctor heard the heart murmur once again, along with the abnormal quickened pacing of his heart. his parents watched carefully, hand in hand, as jun took off his mask to speak to the doctor. "y-yeah, my mom said I fainted again."
she nodded, leaving jun's side so that she could give orders to the younger doctor who seemed more than concerned by jun's case. the idea that they had misdiagnosed him the first time was horrifying to her, it was the first time she had failed like that let alone failed a young patient like jun. the attending spoke sternly, making sure his parents wouldn't hear her as she gave her insubordinate orders. "I want him admitted and an echo done on him. he still has the murmur and something is telling me it's more than innocent."
