╚═══ஓ๑🧸๑ஓ═══╝

She began a new life with a close friend from her old one. Together they'd have a fresh start, starting on the subway they're in.

It seemed pretty crammed to the two of them. The friend didn't mind but she certainly did considering she kept gripping onto his arm. She constantly wandered her eyes to the people around them. The other just kept himself content with a book in his hands. He didn't mind her actions at all, always very understanding of her. Especially as of the recent events that occurred for them.

There were certainly various types of people all across the area. Some of them minded their own business, others talking over the phone, and a few of them would send looks to the girl. A form of annoyance because she probably looked at them too long.

Finally, she had enough as she whispered to him, "Lucas, I can't tell if that guy is staring at me or if he's asleep."

He didn't lift his head up as he asked, "Which one?"

"On the left, next to the one with the suitcase."

He made sure to reassure her with a nod. Lucas pretended to adjust himself in his seat as he glanced towards the left side of the subway. Although, it was true that the man's eyes stayed onto the girl beside him, the drool and the drooped shoulders said otherwise.

"You're okay," he told her, "He's asleep."

The small girl relaxed ever-so-slightly, the grip on his arm looser than before. He asked her, "Do you have them?"

"Yeah." She felt the inside of her bag, in there containing a small bag with some candy. The majority of them had been lollipops. She told him, "They're gonna run out soon."

"Let me know when they do."

She only gave him a nod. It was then that it hit her where they were headed. A brand new school was waiting for them. They would be the new kids. Transfer students or whatever the students there would call them.

She was nervous to say the least.

The subway came to a stop which captured her attention. It wasn't their stop just yet but she couldn't help herself looking at the doors.

Some people left and others entered the subway, replacing their spots. However, in the center of the crowd someone had caught her eye.

It was a blonde who kept shifting her eyes to a brunette and the boy next to her.

This caused the corners of her lips to twitch. She found this amusing and yet slightly concerned to what they might have been talking about. She did have some idea of it.

Apparently, Lucas was talking to her the whole time she's been watching them. It was along the lines of staying the night at his place once again. She interrupted him by poking the arm she was holding with the one she hadn't been using.

He gave her a worried look, "What- did the guy wake up?"

Immediately he looked to the left side of the subway but if he had paid attention earlier, the man had been one of the few that already left.

"No, no, he got off." The girl shook his arm, "Listen, listen-"

"Okay," he shook her by the shoulders, "Stop shaking me!"

She pushed off his hands, attempting to hide a smile. This time they both sat up, her hand no longer holding onto him as she got comfortable.

She motioned to the left of the subway telling him, "I was just gonna say that those girls keep looking at you dude."

Lucas blinked and then he turned around to spot them. Once he did, he gave them a charming smile.

Apparently one of the girls took that as their signal. The blonde one walked up to them, specifically Lucas. She introduced herself, "Hi, I'm Maya."

The two of them just nodded, implying for her to consider. Maya questioned them, "I was wondering if the two of you were together, are you?"

"Together," the girl awkwardly replied, "just not.. together."

"Okay cool," Maya turned to Lucas, "In that case, you're really cute. We should hang out sometime."

Lucas couldn't do anything except smile at her. He didn't have a clue as to what to say. The blonde just kept going, "You make me happy- Well actually you don't pay enough attention to me. This isn't working out. It's you. Not me."

It all went too fast for the two friends to process in their heads. The final thing Maya said to them had been, "We can still be friends, not really."

That was the end of it from her. She had already walked away, leaving Lucas speechless and the girl so-utterly confused.

If that wasn't enough to throw them off, the subway harshly pulled into a stop. Not long after, a yell followed the sounds of the rusty tracks.

"I guess I can say that," the girl chuckled, "you literally fell for him."

It was the brunette she saw with Maya. They unintentionally sat onto Lucas's lap. Or at least, that's what she hoped was the case. The boy had his hands hovered above the brunette's waist. He seemed rather nervous, perhaps he might've looked uncomfortable as well.

The small girl quickly sat up, putting away the book Lucas had. She told the brunette, "Would you mind maybe.. I don't know getting off my friend?"

"Yeah, yeah, I'm sorry." The brunette moved herself on the seat next to Lucas. She told them, "First time on a subway, I guess I didn't hold on strong enough."

"Are you Maya's friend?"

"Yeah, I'm Riley."

The girl eyed her up until Lucas nudged her. She spoke once more, "Jessica."

"Nice to meet you." Riley finally turned to Lucas, "We were just talking about you actually."

Lucas nodded for her to continue; meanwhile, Jessica just continued to silently observe them. Riley went on to say, "You used to go out with my friend Maya."

"Oh, that's what.." Jessica mumbled, "that was."

Lucas just warned her with a slight push. The girl just scoffed facing away.

"I'm Lucas."

"I.. love it?"

Before Lucas and Riley could continue their conversation, a beautiful dark-skinned woman came by. She hinted towards them, "Perhaps someone would like to give this seat to someone older."

Jessica almost stood up before Lucas pushed her back down. He was a gentleman and stood up instead of the girl. He thought it'd be fine but the woman gently pushed him back down. She chuckled, "Not you, sweet potato pie. I couldn't help but notice one of you were already with the blonde one over there."

Riley realized she might of been referring to Maya. She stood up defeated and pleaded with the older woman. After a few seconds, the woman seemingly won the argument which led the brunette to walk away.

A few moments passed by before the subway pulled into yet another stop. Riley never got to Maya which means she wounded up to the other two. Unfortunately, it didn't go so well for her.

Jessica gaped at the scene next to them. Riley landed right onto the woman's lap. She kept apologizing to her as the woman just ignored her. She turn to Lucas, "It's for you."

Lucas playfully glared at Jessica would broke into a fit of laughter. But nonetheless, he spared the women and took Riley onto his own lap.

☁️

Jessica and Lucas arrived at their new school a bit later than what they would've wanted. They bickered back and forth about how the subway took forever as well as the school's office. After they left the office, Lucas and Jessica had a vague idea of where their classroom would be.

That was another thing they both notice from their class schedules, they were the same. It threw the girl off more than Lucas. He was excited about knowing someone in those classes and that someone just happened to be his close friend.

Jessica just convinced herself it was some huge coincidence.

Finally, the two of them stood in front of their classroom's door. Lucas pulled her aside from the door's small window, away from anyone's eyes. He held her hand, "I know you're still nervous but we'll fit in. We've got each other's backs, okay?"

Jessica hesitated, "..Okay."

Lucas opened the door for her, yet to let go. To reassure her that he was by her side. Immediately, their teacher called out, "Who are you? I don't know who you are."

The both of them handed some papers to him. Then they introduced themselves briefly.

"I'm Lucas Friar, from Austin, Texas."

"I'm Jessica V. Park," the girl motioned to Lucas, "Well, I'm also from Texas.. Austin, Texas."

"Ah, new students Mr. Friar, Ms. Park?"

"Yessir," they spoke unison.

"Great," Mr. Matthews spoke, "You're both just in time for today's assignment. Have a seat, you two."

As the two of them quickly scanned the room they realized they saw some familiar faces. Lucas sat behind the brunette from the subway, Riley.

Jessica on the other hand wasn't comfortable enough to sit with anyone new. Thankfully, there was a seat next to Lucas available. In front of her was a boy with very bright clothing compared to everyone else.

Mr. Matthews instructed the class, "Okay, open your books to Page 48."

Everyone did as he asked ready to learn. It was only then he spoke once more, "Now, I'd like you to turn to Page 1."

When the class had done that, Mr. Matthews stated, "Now I'd like you to read from 1 to 48."

The students groaned except Jessica and Lucas. They didn't want to complain about it since they respected their teachers. And it was their first day; they don't wanna leave with a bad first impression. Although, that didn't mean they were thrilled either.

Lucas turned to the girl, concern written on his face. He knew that she struggled when it comes to reading a couple pages, he couldn't imagine what 50 pages would do. She ultimately ignored him as if signaling to let it go. Jessica just stared at book on her desk feeling defeated.

"Okay, for today's assignment." Mr. Matthews announced to the class, "I'd like you to write me a three page essay. On anything."

"..Anything?"

"Yes, anything at all, Ms. Park." Mr. Matthews clarified a bit more, "Anything that you guys believe in so strongly. You'd fight for it."

Everyone in the classroom started to think until someone called out. Jessica along with others looked at who the voice came from, Maya, "That! I'd fight for no homework. I come here everyday. Why can't you teach me everything I need to know while I'm here?"

A few people started to agree with the blonde. Others even started to whisper amongst themselves commenting on it. Lucas and Jessica met each other's eyes feeling weary about it.

"He gets our days. Let's take back our nights," Maya continued to rant on, "No homework, more freedom. Who's with me!"

☁️

Much like the subway had been, the cafeteria was just as crowded. It's been so uncomfortable these couple days when the girl quickly realized that the crowds in New York didn't ever disappear. For such a small state, it really did have the biggest groups.. well pretty much in every turn.

Of course because of this Jessica made sure to stick with Lucas. Usually, at least back at Texas; the girl would walk in front of him. She'd try to lead them to wherever they thought was a safe or comfortable place for them to be. Her friend would be the one to trail behind her acting like a guard or simply following.

This time the roles were almost reversed. Lucas was the one leading them to a table, or at least trying to. Jessica followed very close behind with one of her hands holding onto his shirt. Much to their dismay, there wasn't an empty table for them. The next best thing would be to sit with somebody they knew.

Of course, it was Lucas who actually got to know some people. Jessica wasn't one to make friends so easily as she didn't approach others. She preferred if they came up to her, only then she'd put in the effort.

"Looks like Farkle left," Lucas informed her, "let's go."

"Who?" The girl asked him but he didn't seem to hear her. He started to walk ahead to which she immediately went to follow. Her hand gripping a little tighter around his shirt.

When they reached the table Lucas was the one to ask, "Is it cool for us to sit here?"

"Us?"

Jessica peeked from behind him visibly uncomfortable as she kept seeing other students pass by around her. It was then that Riley told them it was fine. It pulled out a chair signaling for the girl to sit down first. Although as soon as Lucas sat himself down, Mr. Matthews appeared next to him.

The man tried to act casual, "How ya doing?"

"Dad you have a choice here," Riley explained, "You can understand that this is a normal boy talking to me in the cafeteria-"

"I'm gonna do whatever you say next," Mr. Matthews cut her off.

Jessica and Lucas both met each other's eyes. The both of them couldn't help but be amused by this.

Riley's face dropped as she tried to convince him, "But this is so innocent. There's even a normal girl here. The two of them, completely normal and friendly. Eating lunch with us."

Jessica waved to the man before taking a bite of her food. The man just waved back before talking with his daughter. "Honey," Mr. Matthews cooed, "Fathers don't see anything as innocent."

The girl pointed out, "So.. alls dads don't trust your girls?"

"We don't trust boys," he motioned to Lucas, "because we were with the boys or was that boy." He tried to clarify some more, "We see it as- what's the opposite of innocent?"

"Right here!" Maya popped up behind Riley.

At this point, the man and his daughter kept bickering back and forth. This led Jessica and Lucas into their own little world between them. They exchanged a few words occasionally looking up to the Matthews and Maya. Lucas gave her his apple to which she put away in her backpack thanking him. In return she wanted to give him her orange but he refused.

"You know-" Mr. Matthews spoke to them, "I've been to a lot of places. Never been to Texas though. What part of Texas is closest to Mexico?"

Jessica answered him with a confident smile, "That'd be El Paso, sir."

"Great!" he called out, "Let's go right now, Mr. Friar! Thank you, Ms. Park!"

Before the two of them could say anything he had grabbed onto the end of Lucas's chair. Jessica panicked, "Wait- hold on-"

Unfortunately for her Lucas and Riley's dad were gone leaving Jessica all on her own with the duo. She didn't think she'd have to be alone this soon. The girl didn't know how to make conversation so casually compared to her friend. She turned her head with a meek smile, "So-"

The brunette reintroduced herself, "I'm Riley, this is my best friend Maya."

"Yeah.." Jessica glanced between them, "Hi."

"So," Maya guessed, "you and Lucas?"

The girl grimaced setting the record straight, "Just friends."

"Oh, seriously?" Riley seemed confused, "We thought considering how close you were-"

"I know we've heard it all before," Jessica rolled her eyes, "I'm a girl, he's a boy, we have to be together right?"

"Well, no I mean.." Maya tried to tell her, "You're always so close like the bus or like holding hands. We just kind of assumed you were together. Or maybe you guys liked each other."

"Yeah like we're friends with Farkle," Riley shrugged, "He's a boy and we're friends with him. It wasn't like a boy or girl thing."

"Who's Farkle?"

"Ah, he's the boy sitting in front of you in history," Maya described him, "Bright clothes, writing notes as if they were essays and stuff."

"Oh ok," Jessica recalled, "I remember him."

"Yeah, Farkle's nice," Riley smiled, "We should introduce you guys."

"Okay cool."

The air around them wasn't suffocating like the girl thought it would, now it felt comfortable. It felt safe to be around these girls. She found them nice.. as far as she's come to know them at the moment.

The day before, Jessica had stayed the night at Lucas's house. He was the only one to make her feel comfortable and safe. The time to be herself without any judgement. So to see that so far Maya and Riley weren't all that bad was hope for her. A hope to make friends outside of Texas with the new start she wanted.

"So," Jessica changed the subject, "did you guys do the homework?"

She stood up and threw away her trash, handing back Lucas's lunch to the lunch lady. She briefly asked if she a box to put it in. The lady nodded quickly giving her the food back in a to go box. The girl mumbled a quick thanks ignoring the questioning stares that Maya and Riley gave. Luckily, they didn't ask her anything and they threw away their own trash.

The blonde was the one who answered her question. She smiled, "No. I didn't do the homework. The question on everybody's kiwi lips is 'Did Riley do the homework?'"

"No-" Riley denied, "-I'm one of founders of the homework rebellion. You think I did my homework?"

"Well you look kinda jittery with just saying that," Jessica pointed out.

"I think she did mine, too."

"I did." Riley stated proudly, "And I really liked it."

"Riley," Maya groaned, "Don't save me."

"What?"

"Let me be me," Maya stated, "Don't make it your business."

Riley pondered over Maya's words for a moment until she noticed someone coming over to them. She called out to him, "Farkle, hey I want you to meet someone."

Maya signaled Jessica to come closer, "This is our friend Farkle. The one we told you about earlier."

When the two of them finally met each other's presence they couldn't help but smile. Jessica giggled, "Looks like you have a lot on your plate, do you need some help?"

In his hands, the boy literally had so much on his plate. There was his food of course along with three different sets of cake slices. He thought she had made the joke unintentionally but let out a laugh anyways. He shook his head, "No but thank you. I'll let you know when I do."

On the side, Maya and Riley turned to one another before backing away slowly. They started to observe the two from afar. The two of them wanted to see if Jessica and Farkle would get along without them. Just to test if she's okay to hang out with them.

Jessica caught an empty table to which she pulled out a chair. She told him, "Why don't you sit down then."

He took the offer while she sat herself down next to him. The girl suddenly remembered, "I'm sorry, uh, I know your name but you don't even know mine-"

"Jessica," Farkle said, "I remember you from History Class yesterday."

"Yeah.. r-right," the girl stammered. She wanted to say something, anything to keep the conversation going. This was as far as she can go without being with someone she knew. It's not like a job or a classroom where she could think of  what to say first before actually saying it. Thankfully, it seemed as if Farkle had no problem with this.

"I actually thought that you were pretty," Farkle admitted to her, "I don't think I would've forgotten about you so easily." The boy smiled as she had widened her eyes, very much surprised. He cleared his throat before reaching out to one of the sliced cakes. Farkle handed it to her, "Take it. Think of it as a welcoming gift to New York."

She did take it quickly telling him 'thanks'. Jessica wanted to talk to him some more but Farkle had gone up and left.

The girl just stayed there for about five minutes before a familiar duo popped up behind her. She flinched when they started asking questions; it felt like an interrogation, about what they had talked about. 'They' as in her and Farkle. Riley and Maya tried to tease her about how they thought the boy was flirting with her. Jessica just stumbled her words trying to deflect the attention. Eventually, the girls did let it go giving her some peace.

☁️

Everyone was back in class waiting for Mr. Matthews to start the lesson. Although it seemed like he had it out for Lucas. Whatever is was, the only thing Jessica paid attention to was, "You are a really good looking guy."

She immediately eyed the two of them contemplating something. Jessica just attempted to joke around to brush off her fears.

"Yessir," the girl whistled, "Although that's probably something you shouldn't say to a minor."

Mr. Matthews paused and continued on to teach the class. This sent a slight relief to the girl. The teacher clapped his palms together announcing, "So, today we're gonna find out- if anybody here believes in something so strongly, they'd fight for it."

This wasn't a problem at all for Jessica and Lucas because the two of them didn't have to present anything unless they chose to. Neither of them chose to. Mr. Matthews was very understanding and considerate as he knew they would have work from their other classes.

Yesterday was their first day. All they had to do was to get the three-page essay done. The reading he wanted the students to do was for the rest of the week, not that same day.

Mr. Matthews called onto a random person on the list. Of course, Jessica was now familiar with the name, "Maya."

"Yes, sir," the blonde answered.

"Present your homework."

"Can't do that, sir."

Mr. Matthews queried, "Why not?"

"Didn't do my homework, sir."

"Why not?"

Maya spoke as if it were obvious, "That's what I'm fighting against, sir."

Mr. Matthews squatted in front of Maya's desk to meet her eye level. The two of them started to talk as the class whispered amongst themselves.

Jessica heard some quiet snores coming in front of her. She looked at the culprit of those noises, it was the boy who gave her the cake. Farkle had a blue sleep mask on as he was leaned back on his seat. He let out another rattling noise before continuing on with his snores.

The girl turned around to Lucas who had the same amused expression. They felt tempted to wake him up but it didn't look like he was distracting anyone. In fact, everyone who sat close to him just shrugged that he fell asleep. Jessica thought this might've happened a lot for them.

"I have something to say," Maya announced.

"Wow. I don't know what to do," Mr. Matthews feigned, "I've never seen this before! The floor is yours, Ms. Hart."

It was like those simple words had something go off in Maya's head. She pulled Farkle's sleeping mask and let go. This quickly woke him up and he started to clear his throat. Maya told him, "Get up, Farkle. You're gonna want to be awake for this."

"Is it our honeymoon?" the boy joked around.

"No, you missed that," Maya grinned, "Now it's time to hand in our essays."

"Oh! Farkle goes first!" the boy perked up immediately, "Farkle always goes first!"

Jessica's eyes followed the boy going out the classroom. The moment he sat up, to the door and through the window. She found him.. interesting. What was more interesting is that he brought in a whole box consisted with the color red, white and blue. It also happened to come in with small flags and sparklers. Jessica thought of it being some sort of makeshift poster. It wasn't quite right but the girl couldn't find the right word at the moment.

Maya stood up, "Alright. Everybody who did their homework, put it on your desks."

"Careful there, Ms. Hart."

Maya had been collecting the essays; meanwhile, Farkle presented, "The branding of Atlanta led to the end of the Civil War- and of Peace. I believe that peace is worth fighting for."

Maya took a sparkler off his project to which the boy complained, "Hey! That's a pivotal part of my diorama!"

In return, she took another one, "And there goes Virginia.."

"The burning part of the homework led to the end of the Homework Rebellion," the blonde made up an excuse on the spot, "because there was no more homework."

Maya stood onto Farkle's desk with the essays and the sparklers. Jessica gasped as she saw the blonde take the sparklers dangerously close to the stack of papers. She stood onto her own desk snatching the essays in her hand.

"Maya, that's enough!" The girl yelled, "This is crazy!"

"Alright, alright. That's far enough," Mr. Matthews intervened, "Maya! I get it."

She didn't listen. The blonde only chanted, "No homework! More free-"

Water poured down on the classroom and everyone in it. The sparklers that were once lit, were now off as they were held up to the ceiling. The sparklers had set off the sprinklers and the fire alarms. Rings blared through everyone's ears, the students continued screaming in their seats.

They didn't move tell until Mr. Matthews had yelled over the noise. Telling them to move as if they weren't already drenched in their soggy clothes. Everyone nodded quickly doing as they were told by the teacher.

Jessica tried to step off her chair but her vision blurred from the water. The girl's foot slipped and she felt herself falling off the desk. Luckily, Lucas caught her before she could fall harsher onto the floor. The only problem was that her wrist hit a desk that made her wince.

Lucas took the papers from her tossing them onto Mr. Matthews desk. He tried to ask over the alarms, "Are you okay!"

"I'm fine!" Once her put her down she held her wrist. She felt a sting go up her arm indicating the slight pain. She told him, "I'm fine! Go get Riley!"

She rubbed her eyes making her vision better and threw her bag outside the door. She ran back into the classroom, she almost slipped if it weren't for Riley holding her up. She thanked the brunette before going to help Maya get down from her seat.

"Okay, so those worked.." Maya mumbled.

Farkle in all of this had been freaking out. He frantically moved around, "Is this still part of your presentation or is this actually going on?"

Jessica looked over to Lucas who held his jacket over himself and Riley. Despite the situation, she couldn't help but fight the urge to roll her eyes. Sure it was cute, but that was the problem to her. The two of them were already soaking wet from the sprinklers.

Jessica glanced down on her drenched clothes. She sighed, "These were my only clean clothes.."

Maya stood next to her, almost frozen as she was just realizing what she did. Farkle ran over to Jessica and to her surprise; he jumped onto her back. Mr. Matthews started talking once more, "Ms. Hart, you have detention. The principal will determine if it goes farther than that. Ms. Matthews, please leave."

"I deserve detention too!" Riley practically begged.

He wasn't having it as he was already frustrated enough with trying to pull Farkle away from Jessica. The girl herself tried to shake him off of her, panicked. Lucas saw her in the state but was told to lead Riley and Maya outside.

"-You didn't do anything- because you didn't do anything," Mr. Matthews pointed out, "your best friend is in very big trouble."

Finally, the girls along with Lucas left the classroom. Jessica tried to swing the boy off of her. Mr. Matthews tried to pry him off, "Alright Farkle, y-you can get down.."

"Well, actually she's quite comfortable."

"Thank you.." Jessica exasperated, "Get Off!"

"Farkle isn't going anywhere!"

☁️

After that incident, Lucas practically dragged her to his place. He had been quiet as he kept mumbling to himself. Every couple minutes he's would ask her if she's okay as they continued to walk. Of course, the girl would constantly reassure him. Jessica wouldn't bother to argue with him about going to his house. Especially now of all times.

She would definitely needed someplace warm and comfortable for tonight. A hot shower would help her cancel out the coldness of the now damped clothing, along with the windy breeze.

When they got to his place Lucas went ahead to put a laundry bin by the bathroom. He told her, "Go take a shower, okay? Wet clothes in the bin and I'll bring some clothes for you to change into."

"Thank you," she answered.

Jessica stood by the door as she decided to lighten up the room. She joked, "Talk about a new start. Isn't that right, Cowboy?"

She glanced back, only to see him sitting on his bed. He ran his hands through his hair and rubbed his face. Lucas sighed, "That isn't funny, Jess."

"I know but it's not like they were trying to hurt us." Jessica contemplated for a bit, "Well.. I sure hope they weren't. The girls seemed really nice and I think-"

"-I know what you're thinking," Lucas cut her off, "I get it, I thought they were great and all but that's not an excuse for what happened back there."

Lucas fiddled with his hands as if he couldn't contain himself. He constantly moved his eyes from his hands to the girl. It was then that he continued on, "Don't make excuses for them- for anyone for that matter. This might've been an accident but it went too far. You almost got hurt- you did get hurt and we were lucky it wasn't serious. It's only the second day. Imagine what more accidents could happen."

Jessica observed him as she hesitated on what to do. She could see how worried he was for her. Although, she could also tell that wasn't all that it was. The girl moved to his bed internally cringing when she remembered that she hasn't changed from her clothes. "Lucas.. I know this isn't what we asked for and I know we didn't have a choice either but- this," Jessica motioned around them, "this is what we're stuck with now. You know why we're not in Texas anymore. So compared to that- I'd take this any day."

"I know," Lucas wrapped an arm around her, "I know."

"It's like you said," she smiled, "We've got each other's back, okay?"

"Okay."

The two of them sighed as they leaned into each other for support. The silence around them was completely comforting as it usually was. It was only Jessica and Lucas, two close friends from Texas. Nothing would ever come between them as far as they had anything to say about it.

"You know.." Lucas broke the silence, "I think Zay wouldn't be too thrilled on you getting hurt on the second day."

"No but speaking of Zay, we should call him." Jessica nudged him, "And by we I really mean you. I still don't have a phone."

He groaned, "Okay but- get off the bed! It's gonna get wet and I won't have anywhere to sleep."

"Shut up," she laughed, "Your clothes are wet, too!"
