Chapter Fourteen
"Murder is like potato chips; you can't stop with just one"
-Stephen King
Jungkook didn't knew if he should tell them about his research or not. It sounded too absurd even reminiscing in his mind. What would they think?
Definitely that he's insane but on previous meeting they'd gave thumbs up for his idea to investigate the history of woods.
'Fuck it' he thought while clearing his throat.
"Guys I need to tell you something" he said, silently asking for their attention. Jimin stopped his own train of thoughts and try to remain present in the discussion.
"Yes tell us. It's your turn anyways" Yoongi put the their feud aside and focus on him.
"Um, I want you to be open minded about this. Don't think scientifically or logically. Just promise me you won't judge me" he plead, knowing what he sprout would make him seem like insane.
Upon getting confuse looks but go ahead signal, he decided to just recite what he got.
He had knew some bits about the weird forest but didn't think much of it. Like every younger generation, he too didn't believe in ghost stories like old folks. But the flame to find something gave him a little push and he found himself visiting probably the eldest lady of Man-eater town - Julia.
She was one of the sweetest grandma of town who recites old stories to kids. Jungkook himself had experience her motherly behavior first hand.
Unfortunately, she was too old to stand and had been bedridden for the rest of life. She lived alone and a homage nurse would occasionally take care of her, give medical assistance.
"What do you need from this old lady, Jungkookie dear?" She asked in soft trembling voice. Her voice had lost all strength, soft whisper coming out of every syllable. The lovely lady didn't had many visitors, occasionally well-wishers and bills greet her. So it was shocking for her to see a young man wanting to meet her. She'd met the boy when he was searching for his sister. It melted grandma's heart that the boy had abandon everything to find his twin. She tried to help him, the most she could do with her weak body. She told him about the town's history as best as she could but even she was clueless about the malice of Kim Seokjin.
"How are you, grandma?" Jungkook asked putting the fresh apples on her side table.
"I am fine but I know it's nearly my time here. Let me help you last time. Tell me what do you need?" She insisted to cut the small talk, eager to help the sweetest boy who was cutting the pieces of apple in bite size for her.
"Ma, can you tell me about the forest's devil briefly?"
"W-why do you want to know about that, child. Is everything okay?" She was scared that Jungkook had unknowingly had encountered something. Something which had the power to ruin lives.
"Yes, but I think the forest is related to something which can help my case. It could help me finding my sister" he responded sincerely.
"Okay... I was not originally from this town. Married a sweet guy and lived here in a small farm. Everything was good, people were nice and helpful. But I began to notice the eerie deaths of livestock. It raised my curiosity that people were brushing off a serious matter. First it was Mr. Johnsons' cow, he trades with livestock so I didn't bother asking much but then some friends of mine had lost their sheep then my in-laws, living down the street lost their only dog. What raised red flags in my head was that they didn't bother to find their pets or animals and would shrugged my questions upon asking. My husband had lived in a city for quite sometime, didn't believed in souls and ghost but the constant nagging and my stress about the odd feeling of losing animals. He finally cracked and told me about that"
"This town's name Man-eater is real" Jungkook came closer to her, trying to listen her hush whisper and tale-tell of the truth untold.
"Many many years ago, witches were common in every land and this town wasn't untouched but was sparse with them because of convenient deep forests in between of two valleys. Worshipping devils in the woods on full moon, sacrificing animals to please their lord. Their souls devour anything who'd enter or get lost in woods. Some argues that there are cannibals who had been eating their livestocks instead. But the most terrifying story was about the devil after which the forest was named" Grandma was lost in her story.
The devil was a fallen angel who gets addicted with God favourite's blood- human. He was kicked from heaven because he killed hundreds of human and other subjects for his hunger. But that didn't stop him from devouring the humans on earth after being abandon. Some says he was too strong from any angels to stop. He was the creator of cannibals, self-proclaimed lord of witches, whom they had been worshipping ever since. His deteriorate human form was so perilous and grave that God himself came to finish him, constrained his soul in his own forest. But that didn't stop witches from calling his soul or glorifying him. But they couldn't brought him back even after performing several rituals. His soul was left attended for several centuries; but his followers were the reason of town's odd name. It received numbers of deaths in ancient time. It was written in historic books about the massacres of this town but the new rule to burn the witches. Salem witch trails maybe the reason behind men conservative thoughts and corrupt church but it surely put an end to the killing in this town. The population of witches came to dead-end"
"But the devil's presence was still in his spiritual form that had been the reason behind lost and death of animals. I personally never saw any other odd thing but the forest had an eerie feeling about it like something was still left there. People refrain themselves from going there. Odd smell of raw and burning flesh surrounded the path of woods. I was intrigued about it but kept my distance from it. A important lesson - even if you don't believe in supernatural or superstitions, it's better to live them alone and not mess with entities.
