( chapter one ! )

MICKEY HATTON had never gotten to meet Georgie Denbrough. He was barely even friends with his older brother, Bill, after all. He had heard that the young 6 year old was kind with a soft look to him, that he made Bill Denbrough the happiest 13 year old boy alive. Bill Denbrough had sure loved his brother. Even someone with the least bit of knowledge of the stuttering boy would think so.
To say it was unexpected when Georgie Denbrough vanished in October of 1988 would be an understatement.
The case of the missing Denbrough was something that clearly was not enough to drive nearly anyone in Derry to fear. In fact, it stayed the same eery fucked up way it was beforehand. But with kids occasionally going missing at the hands of an unknown culprit with no evidence leading back to them.
Now school was ending for the year, another cluster of days going down the drain for Mickey. He hadn't any friends, except for one small boy by the name of Edward Corcoran. Although, they were barely friends. More so people who hung out with one another when no else seemed to want to talk to them. It was a silent mutual agreement for the pair. He spoke to other people, sure. But he would never even dare to consider them friends of his.
The whole year had been spent with him keeping quiet for every second of each and every day, avoiding eye contact with the Bowers gang and everyone even slightly involved with them. To say he was horrified of them would be a bit much, as he wasnt completely petrified by their appearance. It was more of a dimming fear, something that continued to grow less and less monstrous as time went on.
Mickey supposed that's what happens when you're told the same ruthless things at home as well.
He gripped his backpack straps tighter than he had beforehand at the mere thought, eyes drifting down to the floor and sweater flopping further down his wrists to cover half of his hands as he walked. He couldnt help but roll his eyes when he heard the voice of Richie Tozier, going on and on about Stanley Uris' bar mitzvah. He looked up slightly, catching Richies eye.
Mickey didnt look away, simply raising his eyebrow at the glasses clad boy, who walked right over to him, abandoning his friends for a moment. Richie grinned as he stepped close into Mickeys space. Mickey would cower, but Richie was about the same height as he was. He simply took a step back.
Richie snickered to himself. "What's shakin, bacon? Caught ya staring. I'm flattered, truly. But do I got something in my teeth?" He grinned, showing off his crooked buck teeth.
Mickey rolled his eyes. He had spoken to Richie a few times before, not enough to get to know him but enough to catch on to the fact that he loved attention. Craved it, even. Of course, Mickey doubted Richie even knew his name, but the boy seemed to have no shame. Mickey huffed to himself. "Leave me alone, Tozier."
Richie gasped dramatically. "Oh come on, Hatton. I want to love you! Let me love you!" He grinned, wrapping his arms around Mickeys shoulders. Mickey shoved Richie off of him, making sure not to be too rough. "Incredibly rude. My lawyers will know about this." Richie joked with a serious expression and tone. As serious as he could before he broke out into a smile, walking away and jogging back to his friends.
Mickey watched with an irritated expression. Sure, the boy was undeniably annoying. But Mickey couldnt help but admit that he was most definetly entertaining. Someone that could give him a good laugh any day.
He shook off his thoughts, walking out of the front doors of the school. He traveled down the stairs, passing by Richie and his group of 3 other friends, including Bill Denbrough. Mickey attempted to walk faster before Bill called out his name in that somewhat familiar soft stuttering voice. "H-hey Mick-Mickey!" He greeted with a smile.
Mickey turned around, smiling softly at the sight of Bill as he walked over slowly. "Hi, Bill." He responded before his eyes moved towards Richie and two boys who he recognized to be Stanley Uris and Eddie Kaspbrak. Again, two people he'd barely spoken to.
Richie spoke up with a wide grin. "As I was saying, I'm gonna be spending the whole summer in the arcade. Gotta get my Street Fighter score up to a perfection. Have to beat some fucker with the name 'M' or some bullshit. Pisses me off." He rambled off, talking animatedly.
Eddie butt in. "You're gonna spend the whole summer in the arcade?"
Richie pretended to grimace, looking down before back up at Eddie. "Beats spending it inside of your mother." He broke out into a grin. "Oooh." He cheered himself on, holding his hand up for a high five directed towards Bill, Stanley and Mickey. Stanley grabbed Richies wrist and put his hand down.
Mickey rolled his eyes at the sight, getting ready to leave until Richie spoke up yet again. "My dear, Mickey, my boy. Would you like to hang out with us today? I know you've got no friends." He spoke, earning a sharp elbow to the side from Eddie. "Hey! That's not a fuckin bad thing!" He protested.
Mickey raised his eyebrow. "I guess..." He would be happy to get away from going home for a few hours. "Where are you hanging out?" He spoke, his voice its usual soft spoken self. He wasnt sure about this whole thing; but he did decide that having friends could be beneficial in the long run.
Richie shrugged, putting his now empty backpack on his shoulders after emptying out the contents into the trash. "We could go to the Quarry. I'm working on my dive." He grinned.
Eddie huffed. "Yeah right. You're too pussy to even jump in." He retorted.
Richie scoffed. "Yeah but I'm not too pussy to jump into your mother. She loves the fast stuff. A real pain slut." He grinned widely, to which Eddie cringed visibly. Mickeys nose scrunched up in disgust.
"That's fucking gross, Tozier. Where do you even come up with this stuff?" Mickey spoke up, eyebrow raised.
Richie seemed somewhat taken aback by the sudden question, not expecting Mickey to be vocal at all. He blinked away his shock. "Wouldnt you like to know?" He grinned. "Knowledge, Mickey my love. Knowledge. And lots and lots of porno mags! Could show you sometime." Richie laughed out. Mickey rolled his eyes once again.
Bill spoke up. "Guys, w-we have to g-go to th-the barrens." He stuttered out.
Richie adjusted his glasses, nodding in understanding. "Right." He mumbled quietly, the first time Mickey had seen Richie give up so easily. He figured Bill was probably still searching for his brother. Mickey hoped he would find him.
Eddie spoke a few long seconds later, eyes set on a worried looking woman standing in front of the school, deep purple bags underneath her red weepy eyes. "Betty Rispoms mom." He said simply.
Mickey and everyone else looked over, a sense of dread washing over Mickey. Betty had gone missing a few weeks beforehand, something that was not quite surprising, as sad as it is to say. Richie chuckled humorlessly. "As if Betty Ripsoms been hiding in HomeEc for the last few weeks."
Stanley looked up at everyone else, an unexplainable look in his eye. "Do you think they'll find her?" He questioned, the first time he had spoken through the time Mickey had arrived.
Richie let out a short laugh. "Sure, in a ditch. All decomposed, covered in worms and maggots, smelling like Eddie's mom's underwear.."
Eddie fake gagged. "Gross!" He exclaimed. Mickey was glad someone else thought Richie's jokes to be as gross as they usually were.
"Sh-she's not d-d-dead. She's m-m-missing." Bill spoke softly from in front of everyone else.
Richie immediately shut up, nodding. "Sorry, Bill. She's missing." He spoke before trailing off. "Y'know the Barrens aren't that bad. Who doesnt love splashing around in shitty water?" He grinned before he let out a yelp, mixed with that of Stanley, both pulled to the ground by Patrick Hockstetter. Mickey froze slightly, looking around at the rest of the Bowers gang.
"Nice frisbee, flamer!" Patrick exclaimed, Mickeys head snapping over to look at the scene. Patrick had grabbed Stanley's kippah from off of his curls, throwing it at the passing school bus as Stanley yelped out a cracky "give it back!"
Mickey swallowed hard as Patrick's eyes moved up to meet his. Patrick walked forward. "How's it going, girly boy? Feeling good? I may just have to fix that." He grinned, his smile way too creepy. Mickey stepped back, bumping into Richie slightly, who simply grabbed Mickeys elbow and kept him close.
"You s-s-suck, Bowers!" Bill spoke up as Richie hissed out a "shut up, Bill!"
Henry turned to face Bill, a grin on his lips as Patrick walked back over to stand by his side. "You s-s-s-say something, B-B-B-Billy?" He mocked before looking up at a police officer. Mickey recognized him as Henry's father. "You got a free ride this year cuz of your little brother. Ride's over, Denbrough. This summer is gonna be a hurt-train, for you and your faggot friends." He snarled, licking his hand and rubbing it against the side of Bill's face before walking away.
Mickey bit the inside of his cheek, watching the whole thing happen. He felt horrible for Bill. He knew what being made fun of for something you couldnt control felt like. Adding in talk of Georgie seemed too far.
Richie huffed, clearly angry. "I wish he'd go missing."
Mickey chuckled under his breath. "What a miracle that would be. All of them going missing." He mumbled as he watched the Bowers gang get into their car.
Eddie clenched his jaw. "Hes probably the one doing it." He spoke. Mickey sighed. It was believable. Henry to be at fault for all the missing children.
Richie licked his lips, moving closer to Mickey, arms touching. "Let's go to the barrens guys. It's always a great way to start your summer in the great big toilet of Derry!" He grinned, throwing his arm around Mickeys shoulders.
